I'm glad I'm not the only one that has problems with this pandora's box. Been through so much with mine..my 84 & 85 both have them. They always crack around the mounting area where yours was repaired. Just so you know when you remove them to add oil or etc.. you don't have to remove separately. You take off unit all in one piece and always remember once it's on you don't want to ever touch if possible. Another thing the back part was held down originally with two black large o-rings from Yamaha. To install them you have to remove lenses on turn signals and roll them over black housing then try to get up underneath to hook up around molded tabs on cowl. The O-rings should sit on stalk part of signals close to frame. Carey at rz's unlimited has the O-rings. They will drive you crazy but the end result looks very cool 😎
    Good luck!

Great information Stephen. This comment has been pinned to the top. I knew about the orings but had no idea about the "process" to get them on. And clearly I didn't think about leaving it attached to the seat and removing it as a unit. That's great to know and I'll give it a try. So now as you said "once it's on don't ever touch if possible". For now I will use black tie wraps which will hopefully hold on to the glued on mounts up underneath. I doubt I'll get many miles on this before I change over to the proper refinished body work. Maybe.😁Thanks again for the great reply here!!!

@Ken's Garage No problem..My 85 has those flush mount tear drop style signals, so I use 2 black zip ties to hold back down. Got to keep back down to prevent flexing of two front mounts. It's not a very good design. Most people have cracks in them. Waiting for someone to make a carbon one. The bum stops are hard to get and are about 300 if you find a good one. I actually had the plastic backing for one 3-D printed but would need to be upholstered.
      Happy Riding 🏍💨

Ken, always a pleasure to watch your troubleshooting techniques and ideas while maintaining a Clint Eastwood cool demeanor in all your videos. Great idea of using the heat gun. Bike looks amazing, can't wait to see you ride your pride and joy.

"You've got to ask yourself one question: do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?" Thanks Richard. Soon to be on the road except we are in a "polar vortex" ATM. Might take my MC ride route today in a car to see the rare around here white stuff on the ground. I made the snowy ride a few years back czcams.com/video/VQjBKLWbmuk/video.html

The bike looks real nice. Maybe you can put a belt of some sort around the seat in that area to compress the seat away from being in contact with the bracket or the cowl.

    • @KensGarage1

Thanks John B. for now it will stay as it is. That seat is my "solo seat" seat. It's already ruined from being modified for the 83. As I mentioned this body set will come off for the NC2 stuff hopefully by summer.

Thanks for another Saturday morning session from your garage! Coffee, ✅ Let's go.
Thanks for trip down memory lane regarding the Yamaha accessory rear seat cowl. I remember seeing one installed on the display bike at the dealership back in '85. While it looked cool, it was functional liability, as you showed in the video. 😊
A deja vu moment for me, revalidating my decision to skip the cowl, when I bought my RZ. Younger me made a good decision? While not "Dirty Harry ", you did, "make my day". 😂
I went with a Corbin Cafe seat, which was not as cool looking as the Yamaha cowl, but way more comfortable than the stock seat. I still have the stock seat, so I can switch between the two seats in seconds, for a very different visual. Part of the fun with bikes, we can mix and create to our own personal tastes.
BTW, I like that '84 fender. Beautiful.
The '85 RZ came with an all red, with a black tail, fender. Cost cutting by Yamaha? The '84 fender wins, hands down! The purists will scoff, but who cares? A great way to test the so called "RZ experts". 😉

I may have said in one of the videos I think this 84 paint/graphics scheme is the most beautiful of all of the 350's. BTW, I found the "Windy" video staring you and your bike czcams.com/video/iSF1wG6NAFo/video.html Beautiful low mileage one owner machine you have. And it is putting out beautiful music. Congratulations on your rebuild.

@@KensGarage1 Yamaha kept changing it up to make it interesting, for sure. I like them all, but the '84 had some really nice details. Part of the fun with these bikes is learning about their evolution through the model years, spotting the details, appreciating the improvements Yamaha made from the early two stroke twins in the sixties, the R5, RD350, RD400, RD350LC, and the RZ350. It makes me appreciate riding them even more.
We had a lot of fun making that video. Harriman Park in NY is a beautiful area, 50 miles north of NYC. Great backroads, historical sites, the beautiful scenery of the Hudson River Valley. If you like two wheels, there are standing meet ups every Sunday at coffee spots around the valley. That is how I met Windy.
My bike is very much a work in progress. Fixing the tank paint now. The fairing rash will follow. I am planning to refresh the rear suspension soon too. Have a new shock, plan to pull the swinger, do the bushings and bearings. Now you know why I watch your channel all the time. 😅

@@Scott-ph2yk I really would like details on your nose fairing repair. Have a similar "issue" with my otherwise near perfect 83. It really needs fixing. Would you be willing to email me pics and details when you do this? rzdood..... - at..... - gmail

Hey Ken, great video series. My ‘84 is in need of new paint, and I thought I heard you say the paint shop would be opening this spring/summer, do you do paint for others, or just your own stuff?
BTW, where in california are you, if you don’t mind me asking?

    • @KensGarage1
      @KensGarage1  Před rokem

Hi Nuno. Thanks for thecompliment. Yes, the paint dept will be operating this spring summer to some extent. Got priced out with the latest quotes to paint a couple 350's that are ready. So forced to learn the process myself. Not for hire, sorry. I have too much stuff to do. In the bay area south of Oakland. The 350 in your avatar looks quite nice!

Thanks for the quick reply, Ken. It’s a bummer you’re not for hire. Even if I threw in some RZ parts? Let me know, and keep up the great work. Also, my RZ is definitely a 10, especially if you stand at least 10 feet away. 😂

@@Nunodeo A 10 at 10 feet. Sounds perfect for a good riding machine. And definitely not for hire. Always willing to help out but a paint job, nope. This little hobby is fun but there's a bit more to life than this, eh?
