- There comes a point in a man or woman's life where their form would make you think that they are throwing farther than they actually are. It's at that moment they need to forget about form work and transition to learning to move the disc faster. Yep. It's time for the secret sauce that makes the disc go boom.
In this video I show you my personal process for increasing my usable disc golf distance. Enjoy.

I never knew I needed a Josh warmup montage in my life, but I did, and it's here.
Omg; why did that montage have to go so HARD 😢
Would love to see a video combining TechDisc data A-B’d with real world distances in the field. Arm speed, rotation, and nose angle is great stuff to single out form adjustments, but a series showcasing someone making those adjustments and then turning around and showing the effect it has with field throws would be ideal!
As they speed through the finish, the shots go down
The fans get up and they get out of town
The arena is empty except for one man
Still driving and striving as far as he can
The sun has gone down and the moon has come up
And long ago somebody left with the cup
But he's driving and striving and hyzers the turns
And thinking of someone for whom he still burns
He's throwing for distance
He's throwing for speed
He's all alone (all alone)
All alone in his time of need
Butlerized from "The Distance" by Cake
I think the disc goes 50ft further if you catch it on the rebound
Great, focused practice session on the thing that ACTUALLY matters most in the end! Form was aight too ;)
proving the old adage, 'fast is josh, and josh is far'. love to see it!
Hahaha. That was great. Appreciate the comment
Josh, thank you for sharing your numbers publicly. You're rippin't it! You and Bonanza helped me realize my mid-800s spin rate was seriously bad. After eliminating a couple possible causes, I realized it was a grip issue. I was holding the disc too loosely in my reach back, and I think my body was forcing me to grip hard too early to avoid dropping it. I switched to a Calvin-esque bent elbow reach-back that keeps the disc snugly in my hand, and honestly, just like that, it started snapping out at 1000+ RPM and 60+ MPH. It takes some grinding, but the Tech Disc helped guide me to 5% faster throws and 20% more spin rate in one session!
Nice. Invaluable for compressing time frames
Josh, you might not remember, but a month or two ago, you and I talked in the chat about the pointer finger getting completely destroyed after doing a ton of field work. Just wanted to mention that the solution that worked for me is I actually tape my finger before I do a net or fieldwork session. Just 2 wraps around the tip of the pointer finger does the trick. Not tight, just snug, and not over the joint. Just the tip. ;)
If your finger is already bruised to hell, you might need a 3rd wrap.
I think it’s called medical or cloth tape. I’m sure you keep/kept some in your normal tennis coaching first aid kit.
Always wondered how I could stop ripping my index finger open 😂
Came for the Max Distance vid. Stayed for the Warm-up Montage.
I appreciate the extended length at the end of vid to jam to the background track (I’m sure it’s mainly to give time for click to next vid). Always tasty tracks in y’all’s vids.
For pure grooving pleasure
Love this! Would be cool to see some before and after in a FIELD
Love the rebound catches
The faster you get the more your discs are gonna change as well. Discs that used to be your bombers will start getting too flippy and disc that used to be more over stable will become your bombers. Usually.
Can’t wait to get my tech disc!
Gonna need a training montage with Ezra now. 💪
Just got my techdisc last week. Holy hell it's nice
Haha. Enjoy!
I have an impact screen from Carl's Place for my ball golf simulator. Top notch quality.
Power is emanating when you throw with mean intent. Mike Tyson didn't aim for the jaw, he aimed for the back of the head through the skull. good shit
I want this setup!
Building Speed with repetitions by Josh the DJ spinz doctor. Like it.
I have measured several throws to 109 km/h (67 mph). I saw a video where Kirkland threw 67 mph at Goat Hill and the disc flew 500 feet. I have never been close to that distance, typically throwing 360-400 feet. My furthest measured throw on flat ground has been 430 feet. I can throw fast, but I think I get less spin than for example Kirkland. I can improve the speed, but I can improve other factors as well.
I’m just shooting for 60 at this point. Great work Josh!!! Would love to see weekly or biweekly updates on this!!
60 is a great goal!
@@OverthrowDiscGolfdid you stick to your goal of 30 throws every other day? I’d be interested to see an update/progress video!
@@bbd1254 I topped out at 68.2 and realized I need a pretty big form change to get to 70mph
In a document about QB:s P.Mahomes coach said that occationally they do drills etc at much faster pace than in actual game enviroment. One of the main reason where that in the real deal the moves feel slow as he is already super comfy executing the stuff at 120% or so. Edit: Commenting about the intro where you said sometimes its nice to try to throw your arm off.
Just received my TD in the mail today! (With you guys submitted as affiliate 😊)
Cant wait to get my baseline recorded and get to work! MN winters are lonnng.
Nice job on the upper 60s!!
Hope you enjoy it!
@OverthrowDiscGolf baseline tested. Hitting some 62s, but I think I got a model that only goes nose up.. 🤔🤣🤣🤣
@@h0nkyJ I’d ask for a refund lol
@@OverthrowDiscGolf 🤣 hit some 63s, but my nose angle and spin were pretty bad!... 😵💫😬
Good to know what I need to work on!!
I wonder if anticipating the disc bouncing back and catching it is impacting your form/muscle memory at all?
It definitely helps me brace better
Love to see the rips from you Josh!! I was wondering if your follow-through is incomplete because you're trying to catch the disc - and therefore damages the potential speed if you were to throw unrestrained?
It very well could. I’m unsure. There’s definitely a trade off happening here with that. It causes me to brace better but follow through less. Ideally I’d have another 5’ of space to walk up in
Player Josh? More like Playaaa Josh 😂 keep up the good work!
holy shit, player Josh ripps :)
Have you heard of "overspeed training"? It's something that's become popular in golf, where they start with a lighter load and get to moving it faster, training the twitch muscles to move that quickly. Then they increase the load until they're moving the heavy stuff as fast as the lighter stuff. I don't think I've seen it done for disc golf yet, but you guys have the tools to test it (light disc, standard disc, heavy trainer disc).
I’ve heard and have heard of things in the works that will make that possible in disc golf
@@OverthrowDiscGolf ooh, that's more exciting than pulling out my blizzard katana, standard weight driver, and training wizard, then trying to explode my throwing net lol
Great video. The only way to be more agile is to practice being more agile! I would love to see a practice session to accomplish the same goals without the use of technology.
Hey Josh! Good work, are you consciously going for more stagger here or perhaps it is the short space for the run up? IS it more than usual or am I just seeing things?
It is more and it is unintentional
Your videos have become my favorite. Being an engineer, I appreciate your approach using data. One thing I've wondered since you started showing the Tech Disc is... how much does it weigh? When we're concerned with grams, I would think the weight would not be negligible. Do they recommend using a lighter disc compared to what you usually like to throw to make up for that weight difference? If not, then maybe you would be closer to 71 when you remove that weight!
They try to get it to 175g with the tech attached. So basically it is max weight
@@OverthrowDiscGolf OOOOhhhhh, I see now. I should've checked out the website before asking my question. I thought you put the tech on your own discs, I didn't know it came on a disc already.
Damn, it was just a few months ago where you were throwing mid 50s :O
When you're thinking about generating speed, how would you describe the difference in terms of feel versus a more casual throw? For example, does it feel like you're muscling up more, being really loose, exerting more force in to the brace, etc. Just curious cause often when I'm thinking "I want to generate speed," I really don't despite ~feeling~ like I should be.
I feel like I’m trying to throw my disc through the screen. Generate as much speed with my disc as possible through my target
I'm hoping TechDisc or a partner comes up with a way to combine their sim data to create a course simulator. Would just need to add a sensor on the screen to measure x axis and then factor in wind into the sim. We're very close to finally having an indoor disc golf sim.
So close!
This is look very Paul Ulibarri new video ;)
Im worried about that front knee health on you distance shot, would like to see that foot pivoting around the heel during follow through to release sideways pressure on the knee. Also I have a strong suspicion that trying to catch the disc with the left hand on the rebound is affecting the follow through as well.
I think adding a wam up montage has got to be worth 50 feet.
I hope so
All jokes aside, I’d be curious to see a warm up video that was a combination of stretches, dynamic movements and maybe some drills.
@@stbnj I want to see that too. I don’t think we’re the ones to put that out though
💪💪
Do you ever do water resistance speed training? Worked wonders for my punches and kicks when I use to compete in martial arts.
I actually heard about this from Paul one time. I haven’t done it but one time
Damn, that was a bad-ass warm up
😂
Curious.. it looked as though the proximity to the screen and the discs bouncing back at you was having quite an impact on your follow-through and body position at the end of your throw. With repetition, perhaps it could impact your overall throwing mechanics? I get you have limited space, so totally understand you're working with what you've got, just sharing a thought as someone who has done a fair bit of athletic and functional movement coaching, and was curious if you had noticed/considered after seeing your footage.
I had considered it actually. I’ve thought about whether it was the anticipated bounce back or an overly emphatic brace to throw speed ratio. I know that I don’t do this out in the real world nearly as much and follow through much more, but also my brace is better in this setup. Unsure at the moment but definitely thinking about it
This has inspired me to go watch a Bryson Dechambeu speed training video again
Question: would it have a positive or negative impact if one would glue lets say 20 or 30 gram weight on top of the disc? This way more strength would be needed to throw resulting into muscle growth of active throwing muscles.
I have been thinking about this because for example 100m sprinters are often like body builders but then again baseball pitchers are not.
It could, but it could also throw off your form maybe? I'd rather do heavy regular training, and then throw-training with your regular discs.
Professional Baseball pitchers today use powerlifting to speed up leg thrust and torso rotation.
Unsure
@@michaelcushman great to know! Any idea if they train throwing motion with resistance or weights?
Is there any follow up to how well this went over time, and how effective it is as a strategy? I tend to max around 61-62 right now, and I’m considering doing this. I’d love to get into the 70s..
My average and max speed have definitely gone up since this video
Very useful concept worth incorporating in fieldwork, but likely 95% of us won’t be incorporating the hi tech data analysis stuff.
awesome tipps! only problem is i lost my disc because it went way too far and is swimming in a river now
Bummer!
This surprises me. Some of my favorite disc golfers throw super slow but throw really far
It might looks slow but if the disc is goin far the hand is zoomin
@@OverthrowDiscGolf okay, so you're pretty much saying the arm speed not the entire run up
@@matthewwilson7802 Correct. I have thrown 64 mph just standing on my right leg
Wait a minute. .53 "if you move your disc from here to hear faster you are going to gain more distance." The first move into the pocket, that's not where your speed is coming from nor where it needs to be. That last hit out of the pocket is where the speed is coming from. So I'm slightly at odds with this statement. Yes, if everything is faster and still in time, much power can be had, but in reality, it's the hit that needs the power and speed, not coming into the pocket (IF you need the speed into the pocket to carry into the hit, okay, but in reality, getting into the pocket doesn't feel like the absolute must have speed place). Think Bruce lee one inch punch :)
Item 2, because you know I pay attention to your videos: You not long ago noted you picked up like 5mph just going deep pocket, I walked though many of your throws and I'm not seeing a deep pocket in here (could be speed or angle and I'm not seeing it), but you will obviously know for sure, since you are one of the few that can usually throw on demand a deep pocket and short pocket, but maybe it's not something you were considering when doing your session today?
Item3: Thanks for testing out that screen. I've got one, it's motorized (for golf) but wasn't sure how it would stand up to a spinning disc, so this is good info to have!
Item 1: my statement at face value is true. Move the disc faster and the disc goes further. Distance work is not accomplished while thinking semantically.
Item 2: I’m only thinking about moving the disc quickly. This is not form work AT ALL.
item 3) you’re welcome. We had to keep it much looser than recommended for golf balls. If not it seems to cause issues when you get into the 60+ range.
oops, missed the ending before i typed this, you are taking deep and regular into consideration, so that takes care of #2 :)
Which screen are you using. Carl's has some options.
Seems to me that you might want to knock down that wall. You can always use partitions if you want separation.
We’re renting so knocking down the wall is not an option at current. The link to the screen is in the description below the video
@@OverthrowDiscGolf I followed the link but they have several options including size.
Just wondering which screen you are using?
bummer about the wall.
@@davelopez9161 oh. They are custom sizes. So it’s a DIY kit that is customized to the size of your room.
@@OverthrowDiscGolf Ok. Thanks
65 average, with the right disc and angles and what not thats good for like 450' ish
Is it not weird being so close to the screen? I know for me I’d be thinking “ok where is the disc gonna be so I can catch it” and focusing on that aspect rather than my form. Is it a spec issue or something? Just seems like a distraction having it that close to the end of your throw. Although I guess you WANT to be close to as to measure the speed more accurately so it’s just a matter of figuring out where your throw ends essentially. Still I’d I have it at least 5’ past my throw haha What could be some other exercises or drills one could do when they can’t get outside to help increase their speed?
Yeah, probably not ideal but it sure does make me brace
Front leg disc golf, stressful 😜
Just like in baseball, a lot of the top pros swear by long toss as being the #1 tool for gaining velocity.
Is long toss just throwing it as far as you can?
Overthrow, long toss is throwing as FAR as you can. It is a tool but it isn't really the best way in baseball. Pull-Downs are better for getting velocity which keeps the launch similar to a regular throw. Very similar to what you are doing.
For $300, I am planning on going to the gym in the off season to work on strength and flexibility,
Getting in the gym for the off season is a great $300 spent
@@OverthrowDiscGolf yeah even my son wants to work out as he is seeing limitations in his game. We thought about tech disc, but spent on the gym.
@@billherrera6386 Hey. As a dad, I would have made the same choice. Enjoy
I started hitting the Gym last year and added 60-75 ft consistently this year. I've hit a few 450ft throws....not internet distance. lol
@@stevelatchford4718 NICE
Speed does equate to farther, but Simon had a video where he and someone else were throwing the same speed yet his discs went farther. They determined it was bc Simon was generating more spin. So it seems that is a factor somewhat separate from speed, or how would you explain that?
I love Simon but he’s anything but deeply analytical. Spin rate, launch angle, nose angle, and degree of hyzer all affect flight distance in addition to exit velocity
I’ll echo what the above commenter wrote. Speed being equal there are obviously all the other factors, but the point of this video was that at some point you have to throw faster to reach higher distances. For example, nobody in the world is going to hit 450’ only throwing 55mph. It’s literally impossible without wind assistance. A disc leaving your hand at 55mph could go 100’ or could go 350’ depending on how you throw it, but it is NEVER going 450’.
@@OverthrowDiscGolf are there or do you think there are minimum speeds for certain distances? Assuming the other factors are accounted for, do you need to hit a certain minimum mph to throw 400, a certain mph to hit 425, a certain mph to hit 450, 500, etc? Again assuming angles are good, no wind, flat terrain.
@@charlied904 Absolutely. What distance are you trying to throw?
@@OverthrowDiscGolf 425 would be nice
As a comparison, I'd like to see your forearm stats.
You mean not mine specifically but just forehand vs backhand in general, ya?
I have good form that gets me out to 350' easily, but every time I try to rip it, my form is thrown off.
Yep. That happens
Noticed something in your form...(way too much yt vids from you and others ha)...your last step might be too big. Seems that the disc is releasing before your hips are firing?
My hips definitely fire first, but it is definitely hard to see full speed. Also, it depends on what hips firing to you means. There are a lot of definitions out there for it currently
@@OverthrowDiscGolf hmm, guess i was catching your plant foot not opening, which is what made me think it was the hips. good avg speed there!
But out of the 30 how many did you catch?
At least 25
Nice!!!@@OverthrowDiscGolf
Those are legit rips, player. Wishing you an average of 73 in a session by the close of 2024.

Can't forget rule #18
Ok. I’ll bite. What is rule #18?
@@OverthrowDiscGolf Zombieland Rule 18: Limber Up
That screen is not ideal yet lol, needs more give.
Sorry, I'm not buying any of this. It's all about form, not speed. Cracking a whip has less to do with how fast you move your arm, and more to do with an ever increasing flow of power beginning at the ground and constantly building to a crescendo that ends with the release. It doesn't matter how fast your arm goes if it's not an extension of all the parts that came before it. So learn to start slow and let the power build through your hips, shoulders, arm, and finally your hand. It's not a one time explosion of power so don't think of it like that. Think of it like a flow of power, the arm being the last thing to move. The longer you can keep it coiled, the faster it'll go. But beginning with the idea of moving your arm fast simply defeats the purpose.
Except for the arm on backhands is not the last thing to move. It does not fire after everything else. On forehand, sure. Backhand doesn’t work like that.
I'm sorry but I have to disagree again. Think of it like swinging a golf club. The arms, hands and club continue to move backwards even as the lower body begins the downswing, but they're moving in opposition to the lower body. They're increasing the "X". They're not actually beginning the downswing (even though it may look like they are) until the weight finally shifts from the right foot to the left foot, the left knee braces, and the momentum begins to transfer up through the hips and into the rest of the body. The same is true with a backhand. It certainly appears as though everything starts moving forward, but relative to the lower body the upper body is continuing to coil. When the forward foot hits the ground, just as in a golf swing the momentum starts to transfer up through the hips, but the arm continues to coil. That's what pulls the disc into the 'power pocket'. Any time that your hips and shoulders are moving in the same direction, at the same speed, you're losing power. Indeed it may feel powerful with everything moving all at once, but it's not. You want one thing to start accelerating only when the previous thing starts decelerating. That way you build tension across the shoulders and arm for as long as you can. So focus on keeping the upper body motionless until the last instant... and only then should you think about speed, and ripping the disc. But focusing on too much speed too early will just mess up your timing. Think... start slow... finish fast... and gradually accelerate in between. To me this applies just as much to the backhand as it does the forehand.
Oh, and just my opinion, some people can throw far... some people can't, and all the practice in the world won't change that. Okay that's it, I won't say anything else, I promise.
@@markslempf9030 i understand lag mechanics and used to try an apply the principles to the backhand side of disc golf as well. They don’t work for the disc golf backhand because you will only collapse the pocket. You can’t build lag one piece after another on the backhand side because you are only using the lead arm to hold the disc and you have to protect the pocket. If you lag, you lose the pocket. You cannot lag without trapping the disc behind the trail shoulder. In golf, baseball, and tennis you use both hands and don’t have to maintain a pocket to generate spin.
Again, I once thought the only logical thing was lag mechanics. How could it not be? Lo and behold if you look at the footage you will be confronted by the fact that the pros are not generating as much lag as they possibly could. Shoot, I could generate more lag than they are and have my hand go waaaaaaaay later. But that’s not what they are doing. They are only using the shoulders as a transport mechanism for the hand and they are juicing it.
We have a couple videos coming up in this content vein.
Your argument was my argument 2 or so years ago.
FYI, it may not seem like it but I consider you to be the best disc golf coach on CZcams! Keep up the good work.
