For over 9 years, a war in Yemen has drawn in regional powers as well as the US and European nations. It's a terrible proxy war that has become a major strategic struggle between Saudi Arabia and Iran. The conflict impacts world oil supplies, and global shipping routes. Take a look at this map that shows the two main alliances forming in the middle east. There are growing concerns that what is essentially a cold war could go hot. The situation got so bad that China stepped in to broker a tense deal in March 2023 between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Part of the reason Yemen is so geopolitically important is because of their geographic location along the southwestern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, bordering Saudi Arabia and Oman. The country has a large maritime border along the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden that stretches for 1,906 kilometers of coastline. This includes the Arabian side of the Bab al-Mandab Strait that connects the Red Sea and the Gulf and leads to the Suez Canal, making the Strait one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world.
9% of the worlds seaborne traded oil transits through this choke point and roughly 22,000 ships pass through here each year making it an important geostrategic location. Any American naval ships passing through here on the way to the mediterranean are vulnerable to missile attacks from the shore.

Cappi, I disagree with your narrative. It's pretty simple: do you want extremists in power or do you want freedom of speech / religion? It really does come down to that, and every decision we make ought be dependent on that calculation.
You should look at the wars in the middle east in the same light as the world wars other wars wars in Europe during and just after industrialization.The arabs are 60-70 years later to the party. Eventually they'll all coalesce together to form stable states like we see in Europe right now.

honestly looking at yemen I don't quite understand why people who live in such a region would be so upset, the land is valuable and there is plenty of beauty in the area, there is a great deal of resource wealth and the location is extremely valuable.
@@dominuslogik484they aren't upset because of where they live. Yemen has been the most corrupt country in the region for quite some time. And that's saying A LOT. They're upset because they either have religious fanatics funded by a country who doesn't really care about the people there in charge, or foreign powers indiscriminately using their strategic positioning and resources for their own benefit while bombing innocent civilians by the hundreds of thousands. true, I arrived to this channel for the weapons and military vehicles. As of today is one of my favorite sources for current geopolitics and conflicts history. And I like that even though he always tries to stay unbiased and inpartial, he presents it with humility and warns people to double check their sources, including his own content, since it is comming from an "Average Infantry man". Cool guy indeed, and also good job from his team.

Im ashamed to admit this was the first time I ever watched a video about what the hell has been going on in Yemen. The only time I heard of it was when the Russian-Ukraine war started and twitter was like "yeah but what about Yemen??" so thank you for this video, between yours and some other youtube channels I've been able to learn a lot about middle east and why it is the way it is

Except for the things he leaves out, like the U.S.-led war against Iraq in 1991 was revealed in court to have been an act that had the effect of concealing that Sadaam Hussein's annexation of Kuwaiti territory was completely justified. Under international law, a country has the rights to its own natural resources and to enforce its own territorial integrity. And it was the direct result of acts performed under contract to Halliburton, Richard "Dick" Cheney's drilling company, and evidence was produced in that court that the U.S. knowingly did so specifically to shield Halliburton from financial consequences of its knowing illegal actions.
Sadaam Hussein offered that evidence to *all of* his sovereign peers . . . many accepted that evidence, but few acted on it.

I've heard of the crisis in Yemen but I've never seen it covered like this.. It's absolutely insane that there can be a region of the world that is in this state compared to places like Europe and North America.
Just to let you know Saudi did acknowledge that war crimes and as a result Saudi pilots receive extra training from NATO countries were not allowed to get f-35s and had western weapons cut dramatically Saudi is also gives the largest amount of humanitarian aid in Yemen but the reason why their still many who starve is because of Houthi control regions are hard to get to with supplies and the blockade on Yemen

@@Farweasel It's not just that. It's not that easy. You also don't want these conflicts to resolve in way, that creates an powerful anti-west entity. With this money, these numbers of people and resources and at least one muslim country with access to nuclear weapons, you don't want them to unify under the wrong banner and evolve into a serious enemy. A holy war fought with nukes would be very bad.

I don't think think the government or media cares. I think they just expect people to do what they've been doing and not actively interest themselves in whats happening. I mean all this info has been on PBS Frontline, Vice News, the BBC, Vox etc. And whiles media outlets have bias the documentary style peice generally have more info than the clip they have on TV or social media. Folks just aren't interested in educating themselves or education anymore.

I want to clarify something really important about what you said at the part where you talk about US drone strike civilian casualty estimates from 15:30.
You said according to the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, from 2002-2020 US drone strikes killed up to 1,750 civilians in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia. I couldn’t quite find the exact report you are referring to but the other TBIJ reports seem similar in findings to what you mentioned. The misleading part is where you mention the AirWars report that says up to 48,000+ civilians were killed. The AirWars report you referred to is titled “Tens of thousands of civilians likely killed by US in ‘Forever Wars’ “.
The big problem is that this report doesn’t just refer to potential US drone strike civilian casualties in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia (like the TBIJ report) but in actual fact refers to all potential civilian casualties from US air to ground munitions from 2001-2020 in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Pakistan, Somalia, Syria and Yemen. So not only does this report include more countries in the data set but also it doesn’t just include drone strikes but all air to ground strikes. Including for example, all potential civilian casualties from US air to ground munitions from the entire Iraq war and the entire air bombing campaign in Syria/Iraq while fighting against ISIS etc etc.
This explains the drastic difference in estimates between the two resorts. One report is about drone strikes in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia and the other is about all air to ground munitions used by the US in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Pakistan, Somalia, Syria and Yemen. The 48k figure is not from just drone strikes.

I was working at CENTCOM when the USS Cole was attacked. For quite some time prior to that event the nation of Yemen had been declared a terrorist haven, but the US State Department had softened its stance on the country. Even so, I was surprised when I read a message in 1998 or 1999 that stated US Navy vessels would begin making port calls for refueling. At the time I asked one of our Navy staff if he considered this a wise decision, given that nation's past record. He shook his head, shrugged, and pointed upstairs. Like all important matters, these decisions were made well above our pay grades by people who were looking at the "big picture". That picture did not seem to include a proper risk assessment, nor did it incorporate lessons learned from the 1983 bombing of the Marine barracks in Lebanon or the 1996 bombing of the USAF barracks in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, when the Cole arrived in port, her gun crews were held to absurdly strict rules of engagement which prevented any proactive defense of the ship. The rest is history. When I think of all the avoidable tragedies that occurred during my 30 years of service, the biggest takeaway has been how often complacency kills (and how few are ever held accountable for it).

My experience has been that people in power only listen to themselves. Or Yes men. Then they promote the Yes men without integrity. And the higher the rank, the less risk of paying for the consequences.

They did good work. It's difficult when only one side of a conflict is constrained by rules of war and cares about human rights. Iran figured out a while ago they can operate with impunity to violate LOAC and no one cares.

LOAC is a domestic DoD thing, other countries have their respective rules of engagement, it's not like the revolutionary minutemen were following LOAC protocol. There are several events in this war so far that have been severe violations of international law and sovereignty far greater than the regard for DoD circumspection. I'm not saying the Houthis are anything other than terrorists but it's a significant stretch to say that the Iranians are solely the only perpetrators of human rights abuses in Yemen. The Iranians don't give them more weapons than the western coalition sells and donated to the Saudis, not even close. The Saudis have been having us play around in Yemen since 2002 not 2015 and it certainly hasn't made anything in the region more stable. The Iranians have also given humanitarian aid as well as weapons, do I think it's out of genuine goodwill? Of course not, but in a conflict like this it's more important to condemn the reality on the ground than it is to really pick a 'side' especially when neither of those sides are doing what's best for the Yemenese people. Which are on the verge of starvation currently

As a citizen of Oman, I can guarantee you that nothing was smuggled through Oman to Yemen. Oman is an Ibadhi government which is not Sunni nor Shiiate and accordingly it will not gain anything by allowing anything smuggled through its land.

Thank you - Finally a clear breakdown of the history of the conflict. I have been wanting someone to tell this story in a manner that people can understand the complexities of the region as well as nobody hands are clean. So, the conspiracy side of me thinks the current Israel-Hamas conflict is rooted in the Saudi/Iranian power struggle. In March, Chinese broker the deal to for Yemen which put the CCP as the world diplomat. Saudis and the Iranians are now equal. Then the Iranians makes the deal with the US for the hostages in August which put them upfront with Arab world. Then the Saudi ups the ante with the Israel deal brokered by the US. Now the Saudis are at the top. Then Hamas who are Sunni but back by Shia Hezbollah who is backed by Iran attack Israel. No Saudi deal now and if the Yemen war improves any, the CCP will win the diplomacy cred it needs. Great job on video

Gaza’s Hamas being backed by Iran is all about Iran trying to gain more influence in the Arabian Peninsula.
It is really less about the oil, as Cappy unreasonably pointed out in his pretty reasonable video. The US was oil independent just 1 President ago, and can be again with a little regulation loosening.
During different periods of time, Iran/Persia controlled large swaths of the Middle East.
Iran already indirectly controls the Iraqi holy cities of Najaf and Karbala after the second gulf war.
Eventually taking control over Jerusalem (The Temple Mound / Al-Aqsa Mosque / The Dome of the Rock), Medina, and Mecca would place Shia Islam on the top of the world pecking order.
With Iranian Houthi dominated Yemen (holding the 2nd largest Army in the Arabian Peninsula) to the South [fighting Saudi Arabia & declaring war on Israel], Iranian supported Palestinians in Gaza starting the latest war with Israel, Iranian controlled Hezbollah firing from the North in Israel… the Holy Cities all lie in a small stretch in between Iranian backed forces.
Once controlled is gained by Iran, they announce they are a nuclear power, and it is checkmate.
This has the potential to be a nightmare, after Russia set the stage for Persia/Iran by destroying a lot of food exports from Ukraine to the Arab regions.
The US is really a minor blip in this ethnic turning religious conflict, dating back thousands of years…

You forgot to mention Putin the dark horse in the race that has come out with harder line for Nato and Israel. His Syria conquest and then the Ukraine war that was started by IMF because Israel was angry for ruined Greater Israel project. Putin with Iran and China has more leverage that Saudi Arabia is joining leaving USA and Israel alliance. Yemen is another proxy war before Nato go full scale attack on Iran.
I lived in Aden in the 1960's. At the time cruise ships would stop off and passengers would spend money in the city. I was 10 years old at the time so I knew nothing of politics. There was war even then. The RAF used to bomb "rebellious" villages after dropping leaftlets warning the people. The port was amazingly busy so the place was well off. When the British left, the place went to hell. The Russians moved in and the economy collapsed. The 1967 and 1973 wars with Israel caused great problems. So what has changed in 60 years? Not much.

It's a nice vision, really. But even without oil, natural gas or whatever resource you can immagine, conflict regions across the globe do matter for all of us. You can't ignore a large conflict between powerful factions anywhere. If you do, these conflicts and these nations might evolve to something that might threaten all of us in the future. And even worse, your rivals might not ignore them while you do, might heavily invest in one of the factions and might create an even bigger problem for the future. It's a complex world and there are no easy answers.
