Where did the terror organization called Hamas first come from? What is the true origins of Hamas? They are an off shoot break off faction from the Muslim brotherhood who also broke off from a charity organization created in the 1960s. Then in 1973 a Palestinian Cleric named Sheikh Ahmed Yassin helped establish an islamic charity organization called Mujama al-Islamiya also known as the Islamic Center. This group is the precursor to Hamas. Yassin was a refugee of the Arab-Israeli War. A childhood sports accident left him wheelchair bound. Yassin’s charity group registered with Israel in 1978 as a non profit Non Government Organization.
Although the name wouldn’t officially be used until January 1988 when they published their charter outlining their reason for existing, calling for armed resistance to establish a Palestinian state and the destruction of Israel. Hamas envisioned a Palestinian state that would cover all of the territory that had previously belonged to the British Mandate for Palestine from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea. In 1989, the Israeli government arrested Sheikh Yassin was arrested and sentenced him to life in prison for ordering the killing of Palestinians who had allegedly collaborated to help the Israeli army.
In the summer of 1991 they organized into newly formed armed militia units called the Al-Qassam brigades. At the same time, an engineering graduate named Yahya Ayyash joined Hamas and put his engineering skills to work for the group building bombs. Nicknamed “the Engineer” , Hamas first used Kamikaze bombings in April 1993. They condemned the 1993 Oslo Accords and rejected the deal. This agreement created the Palestinian Authority that was intended to be an interim self-governing body with the responsibility of managing certain aspects of civil governance in parts of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The expectation was that the Palestinian Authority would eventually be replaced by a democratically elected government. The idea was to help Palestinians reach self determination for their government. The expectation was that final negotiations would eventually address core issues like where the exact borders would be drawn, the status of Jerusalem, and the establishment of a sovereign and independent Palestinian state.
The terror organzation got the vast majority of its funding from Iran. Israel has had success in fighting the group over the years militarily but it's been a difficult group to destroy entirely.

It is important for people to understand conflicts don’t happen in a vacuum or without reason so I’m really glad you’re doing the work others in cable media or other outlets often aren’t.

When the Palestinians in Gaza have been given every opportunity to be peaceful and prosperous without violence they throw it away and blame the US and especially Israel. They have bit the hands that feed them when needed most. Which is a major component of why NO other Muslim Nation other than Iran supports Gaza and Hamas. Not even Egypt, Jordan, or Lebanon. Let them endure what they asked for and deal with the consequences.
Mujama, founded by a guy from Muslim brotherhood, who used charity as a cover to stockpile weapons and spread his Islamic influence?

That was pretty informative. Found out some things I myself did not know. Keep up the good work Cappy.
The fact that Cappy discussed the new charter is an indicator to me that he does not have much time for irredentist ideations of either side. Bravo.
He (I'm sure inadvertently) mislead about the new charter. It in no way recognises Israel. All it does is "settle" for a two phased takeover of the land, first with a state in the West Bank and Gaza, followed by a takeover of the rest of the land. This is in contrast to the previous stance of taking all the land at once.
@@jedimmj11sounds good to me. If somebody forcibly took my land, I’m not going to let them keep half when I forcibly take it back
Good, then you will support the return of the land throughout. The aaron mushroom world. The Jews were kicked out of. More Jews were kicked out of the Arab and Muslim world then Palestinians were in Palestine. Also, there were Jews living in what is called Palestine 500 years before Islam even existed. The Arabs were colonizers. The Romans change the name to Palestine to punish the Jews. Palestine is a colonial name.
@@DirtyGuerrilla That's what people are failing to understand about this conflict and why it's been going on for so long. The hard line Palestinians (whatever percentage of the whole group that is) have no intention of settling for a long term solution that involves Israel still existing as a state.
The conflict has been going on for so long because the Palestinians can't defeat Israel in an actual open war, but Israel hasn't been able to just take the remaining land by force and kick them out because of the impact it would have on international relations.
So they're stuck in an endless battle until the vast majority of Palestinians give up and decide it's not worth fighting about anymore, and settle for some other solution that still involves Israel controlling most of the land. Personally I think the sooner that happens, the sooner their suffering will end and their overall quality of life will improve. At some point getting "your" land back isn't worth generations of suffering and fighting an endless losing battle against a superior force.
@@DirtyGuerrillado you own land that you never bought or inherited?
Amazing video, dense and informational, yet still straightforward and easy follow. Thank you sir
Great video ! However, you forgot to mention a VERY meaningful event ( a milestone ) in the history of militant-Hamas and that is the encounter with Hizballah in Lebanon, in 1992, when Shimon Peres deported 415 Hamas activists to Lebanon.
This incident resulted in strong ties between Hamas and Hizballah
Those ties don't matter much today, though. Hezbollah & in particular Nasrallah who leads Hezbollah don't ally with Hamas. The biting yet hilarious back & forth between Nasrallah & Hamas spokesperson Ghazi Hamad has been pretty fun to see. Nasrallah cracks dark jokes & TBH... he's actually pretty funny.

Important video, it covers a lot of ground on one facet of the history of the conflict. Some small inaccuracies/random details that popped up as I watched that I thought might be worth calling out:
1) At 1:25 - video states Egypt occupied Gaza at 1959, though in practice - it held it under military occupation more or less throughout since the 1949 armistice agreement (with a short break when Israel captured the territory, from Egypt, during the Sinai war at 1956 until it withdrew on 1957). What happened in 1959 is that Egypt officially annexed the territory as part of the establishment of the UAR.
2) At 5:35 - you mentioned the charter of Hamas called to eradicate Israel and liberate Palestine. That's obviously correct, but that's the part that is in line with the historical PLO position (that was indeed changing at the time). What sets the 1988 Hamas Charter apart is the call for the creation of a Sharia state (with some hinting towards a global State of Islam) and that it outlines the struggle as a struggle against Jews, rather than just Israeli/Zionist Jews (though it does blame Zionists for alcoholism, drug abuse and all sorts of other fun stuff).
3) In the photo on 7:55 - worth mentioning Khaled Mashal is also present in it, he might be an even more prominent member of Hamas.
4) At 15:25 - It somehow became a common claim that Fatah candidates received more votes and lost the election because of the system, but that's not correct. While the district system did benefit Hamas (and allowed it a majority of representatives with only a plurality of the vote) - Hamas candidates received 44.5% of the vote, while Fatah only received 41.5%.
5) At 17:42 - while the change in the charter allows for creating a state in the 1967 borders (with full "right of return" of Palestinians into Israel, BTW), it does so only as a stepping stone and recommits to never recognizing Israel and to maintaining the claim for a Palestinian country "from the river to the sea" even after it is created. That was more about possible reconciliation with the Fatah than mellowing up and progressing towards reconciliation with Israel.
Hamas issued a new charter in 2017. It identifies their enemy as the Zionists and states their fight is not against Jews.
You also failed to mention Israel's far right's support of Hamas and used the organizations in its divide and rule tactic.
@@user-gx4dh3iv1o Srsy? I mean, never mind if it was just some random generic talking point, but you supposedly just finished watching a video that specifically did address this exact topic...
Either way, I'll bite - I assume you think Israel's far right are all bad and only want to hurt Palestinians, and you also seem to assume that they wanted to keep Hamas around to hurt the Palestinian cause (honestly, there might be some truth to that). If that's all true - then under these assumptions - it would mean that having Hamas around is bad for the Palestinians.
So - can I assume that you're supportive of Israel's current operation for dismantling Hamas now?
comprehensive corrections + commentary. thank you!
@@omer_peleg Israel far right is indeed evil, and i have to point it, because Netanyahu and his cronies destroyed decades of political work, and burned all the bridges to dialogue between the Israeli state and any Palestinian authority.
Ethnic cleansing of Jerusalem (done with forcefully and illegal evictions that ignore ownership of non Jewish citizens), extension of West Bank and Golan heights settlements, including the weaponization of them. The attacks on Mosques in Ramadan, and of course bringing back Israel role as a regional agressor just like during the crisis in the suez channel and just like Iran.
The shift from using words like occupation and resistance at the beginning of the video to calling them an extremist terrorist group is interesting. At what point exactly was the occupation legitimized?

17:30 The new Hamas charter does not abandon the demand for the destruction of Israel, it merely agrees to establish a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza, while still insisting the entirety of the land belongs to Palestinians, effectively switching to Arafat's two stage takeover of all the land.

Additionally, when you lay it out in the format you did, it highlights some of both sides' mistakes. I will warn people that these highlights warrant more context, so you must do more research before forming an opinion based solely on this video. A single point. The Mandate for Palestine specifically included all of what is now Israel and Jordan. In 1922, British partitioned the "Transjordan area of Palestine" (literally, meaning "the part of Palestine across the Jordan") and assigned its administration to the son of Hassan bin Ali -- Abdullah I who named himself as Emir.
Jordan did not become "Jordan" until 1948, when it was released from the Mandate.
It's worth noting that the 2017 "new charter" isn't actually a new charter superceding their original one. It's an updated policy statement that "reflects our position for now", according to Hamas. It also hedges on its purported acceptance of Israel's existence and the 1967 borders by maintaining that Israel is an illegal state. And I think we all saw on oct. 7th what that hedged statement of acceptance is worth, and even more so from their statements since then rejecting acceptance of Israel's existence.
I mean Israel needs to go back to its 1967 borders according to international law and the UN. It in fact an illegal occupier.

They didn't start out that way so they might not need land the way you think they do. Their power comes from people, mainly poor people as that's who they started out as a service NGO on behalf of.

This explaination of the history of Hamas is highly recommended..you guys did a good job and an excellent explaination 💯👍👏♥️
I see no bias here. The only side you seem to take is the side of facts, logic, and reason. Good work, Sir.
There's always going to be limitation with sources. Even sometimes just a language barrier can result in biases, as translations can fail to articulate nuances.
It's still a very good video that doesn't try to paint Hamas evil yadda yadda yadd, but reporting historical facts like the US Labeling them as a terrorist does result in loaded language, but it wasn't unexpected from the audience. Sometimes reporting facts will result in bad associations.
there is an incredible amount of bias towards israel. it’s apparent to anyone familiar with the conflict, but you may not see it if this is new to you. i encourage you to watch other videos and read about this conflict. this video wants to paint israel in a much more of a saint than they ever were.
@@rni4069 based off what I saw in this video and read, I am lead to believe that you are biased against Israel and therefore everything that isn’t biased against Israel to you looks biased towards Israel.
@@Jacob-ry2yt i think if you look at this objectively AND you have a good understanding of the history of the conflict, you will understand how biased this video is. i’m not being hateful, it is genuinely just very biased towards israel. i encourage you to continue watching other people cover the topic, perhaps ones that are neutral or even ones that seem biased in the other way. then come back & check how this one sounds.
@@rni4069 what did you hear that you felt was un true or maybe just half true?
Thank you so much for the programme ❤
You are really good at this. Thank you.
I wish someone would draft a map showing tribal boundaries in the mideast, since national borders mean nothing but kindling for civil wars
I think you mean something more like cultural boundaries. Not every group identifies as tribes anymore.
tribal only applied to groups in the Nejd but even then tribal boundaries are outdated there are cultural and religious differences but also now people have adopted the national identities aswell despite them being created by the west after all these years. tribal boundaries is kinda racist.
Couldn't give the Kurds a homeland when they created some countries in the middle east but they could Seize land in Palestine for European Colonists go figure.
@@MusMasi Jews purchased the land, Kurds couldn't afford anything I guess.
Thank you excellent work.
Great job covering this. Thank you.
This was a fantastic summary!
Please please consider doing one about the history of the PLO!
Thank you for the effort
Thank you for this. I like to think I know what is happening and why, but this video definitely put some new perspective into the mix. I personally appreciate your depth of research! Thanks again!!
Thank You Chris! Absolutely lovely.
Thank you for sharing your research. All grounds were covered and backed by facts. Keep up the great work!

As an irishman I had a wee giggle when he said Sinn Fein. 😂 Close enough.
I was searching for this comment 😂👍🏼 cheers 🍻
Must be an irish thing I also want a wee giggle explain the joke please 😅
Cappy, this is the best article I’ve ever heard on the background and history of HAMAS. You laid it out in a clear, concise manner and I really appreciate it! Covering the political aspects of conflicts distinguishes you among military technology presenters. Keep it up!
Important poins you didn't mention:
- Yassin was a refugee *from Ashkelon*
- >60% of Gaza population came from refugee camps of people displaced by Israel in 1948, not original Gazans, and those were the core of the fight against Israel early in the conflict when they were raiding Israeli kibbutzim built where on top of their razed villages in 1948
- Hamas learns from the early days of Israel's militia that used the same tactics (underground tunnels and weapons factories) to form Haganah and fight the British and the Palestinians
- Israel and the US imposed financial sanctions on the Palestinian government when Hamas won, rendering it dysfunctional and leading to the conflict between Fatah and Hamas where Fatah was more keen to use fascist methods to eliminate its rival with the help of Israel, arresting thousands of Hamas political figures in the West Bank. This was alarming to Hamas which made it take action and force the PA out of Gaza by force in 2006
- Golan is occupied Syrian territories. Your map doesn't show that
Israel: *exists in any way*
The Islamic world: *going mad*
Countries around Israel did things much worse than anything you wrote, but nobody cares when that's muslims on muslims.
@justintrud-un7475if someone colonise my brother for the fact any nation in today's modern world everyone should go mad. But people get mad against USSR or Russia today but don't get mad against isrel
@@Muifdy when did that land belonged to a Palestinian state?
They lived there as remnants of the ottoman empire, politics and war happend, Israel was declared and welcomed all the Arabs that lived there to keep living there under Jewish rule and all h3II broke lose.
It's about dar el eslam losing land, not about an imaginary Palestinian state.
@@justintrud-un7475 yeah man there were no people living there no cities or town or villages or farms nothing was there just like there was nothing when European colonised americas. And if u ask about the term Palestine check the images of European Jews coming as refuggess asking palestinians for help.
@@Muifdy I just said, there were remnants of the Ottoman empire there. Remnants of an empire are not a sovereign state that owns land, like Israel today.
BTW can you name me one village or territory taken by force before 48 (before the Arabs attacked Israel to ethnicly cleanse all the J's from it)?
Spoiler: you can't. The Jews are completly in the right here, buddy.
Old school journalism here. Great work.
This is savvy propaganda
The charter didn't call for the destruction of Israel, but of all Jews. Their leaders still say it out loud all the time, just don't have it in writing anymore. Also, calling Fatach more secular is somewhat true, but ignores the fact that they still educate their kids on killing jews according to the demands of Islam, and pays terrorists per Jew killed.
What ever you say mossad.
This is directly from the Ezzedeen al-qassam brigades
منطلقاتنا الشرعية:
- معركتنا مع الصهاينة لأنهم احتلوا فلسطين وليس ليهوديتهم.
The translation (Google translate)
Our legal starting points:
- Our battle is with the Zionists because they occupied Palestine and not because of their Judaism.
You hear the same notion whenever the military spokesman says anything.
He always uses the word *Zionists*, he calls the the zionists enemy, he calls the fascist and nazi zionists but most importantly he never calls jews the enemy simply because they are not.
😂😂😂
What a joke, you need to read the charter.
I recommend accually reading Hamas 2017 charter, and then studying what it means. It has no chages in goals, only chages in the wording, in order for ignorant people to think they are legitimate.
The information given in this video is amazing, well done. However, an ad for gas masks feels wrong here😅
Appreciate you and the crew for tackling such a sensitive issue and striving to give an unbiased look at the facts. Love your work Cappy keep it up! And an extra big thanks to your crew! I know you who are unseen make the show happen! Love your work!!!
Great summary!!!

Great reporting, Thanks
What a perfect introduction in to this very complex historic situation. It is much more complex issue than this video gets in to. But it’s perfect to introduce people who may not know much about the history. Great job team. 🇬🇧
there's nothing complex about it mate
@@jorgeemilio5292simple things easily fixed usually don’t lead to 75 years of recurring issues if they do then chances are the situation is more complicated than you think.

You somehow manage to ignore the Burak uprising which happened in 1929. During the week of riots, from 23 to 29 August, 133 Jews were killed by Arabs, and 339 Jews were injured, most of whom were unarmed.[1][2] Pretty sure the Muslim brotherhood that formed around that time was involved in inciting these riots, otherwise i'd say its really a remarkable coincidence of the events.

just trying to be factual, no hate: this wiki article cites about 130 deaths on both sides. almost equal.
But the charges of murder were less on one side than the other and the convictions were
40% vs 3%.

Great video.
This video too is extremely detailed with a huge amount of research. It was fascinating too. Thank you
Small correction, Israel didn’t occupy Palestine’s Gaza and West Bank, it at the time was part of Egypt and Jordan respectively.
Interesting video, if simplified and partial. Caveat: no justification for terrorism, but condoning and understanding are quite different things.
There are some college people who need to watch this.
