  • ★ The Sony 18-105 F4 G OSS Review ★ If you could only have ONE lens, which lens would it be and why? For me, having a zoom with a constant aperture that can cover me from a decently wide range to a reasonable telephoto range and still give me great quality would be the dream. The closest thing I've been able to find so far is this lens. The Sony 18-105 F4.

    Hi Dunna, thanks for creating this video for us! You also used a lot of movement and titles and video examples in this video so it was entertaining and informative at the same time, amazing job done here! And I have to say I truly appreciate all the lenghts you went to to show the strengths and weaknesses of the lens, use cases and comparisons. Most CZcamsrs just state the obvious facts that everyone knows, but you introduced new aspects, gave your honest opinion and convinced me of the quality of this lens! I will definitely buy the 18-105 now!

    I have the following: 10-18mm F4 / 18-105mm F4 / 70-200mm F4 / 50mm F1.8. I agree with you, the 18-105mm is the one I use the most by far. It is such a great lens for shooting in a wide variety of situations. The other lenses I have are great too but only in the right situation. I take mainly still images but I still like having constant F4 so that I do not have to compromise on my settings because I want to zoom in.

    All people talk about the crazy sharpness they can have with crazy lens.... But for the moment I have only the kit lens (16-50) and it's an awesome lens, I took some crazy photos with ! But I think I will be the 18-105mm because it's more versatile than the kit lens. And I you think it's more sharp than the kit lens, it will be perfect !
    Thank you again for your video, big thumb up from france ;)

      The kit lens is fantastic - its ridiculously small and light, performs well, has OSS, and takes outstanding pictures. Its the poster child for what the APS-C is supposed to be. Love your kit lens that's why its the kit lens.

    Hi man! Thanks for the thorough review especially knowing that you’ve been using it for a good year. I am currently using both Sigma 16mm & 30mm on a6500 for travel vlogging. To be honest when backpacking around, I wouldnt really change my lens since it’s not so versatile. As much as I am loving the sharpness of prime lens, I am really thinking of selling both for 18-105mm. At the end, as a budget traveler I feel like versatility does matter and I only want to carry one lens. What would be your suggestion since you have all three lenses?

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  Před 6 lety +1

      I totally hear what you’re saying Syifa! I carry around all three all the time and my backpack gets pretty cumbersome(I always carry too much stuff) as far as other suggestions... what kind of images do you take? And is it mostly video or photo?

    I voted big time with my dollars to have this lens. It, like your situation, is on my camera 80% of the time.
    I had alpha mount cameras and lenses. I really like my alpha mount Sony 16-50 f2.8 and Sigma 70-200 f2.8 (my favorite lens overall) but the gap between 50mm and 70mm seemed to be what I needed very often. The closest thing to this 18-105 in the alpha mount just didn't work for me. So I ended up selling most of my alpha mount lenses and two camera bodies to switch to an a6500 and a set of e mount lenses earlier this year. I still have an alpha mount Sony A77 and the 16-50 and 70-200. Those lenses didn't work well on the e mount adapter. But after the dust settled I'm so pleased with the a6500 and the 18-105.
    Yes the 18-105 isn't as sharp as the wonderful other lenses, but it's sharp enough for me and I'm fussy about sharpness. The range is great and if I want to I can use Clear Image Zoom to extend the range. I'm not big into video and people say the powered zoom is for video. I use the power zoom a lot to frame still shots. It zooms silently. It isn't too heavy. I really like this lens. I wish it was an f2.8 but it would likely be much larger and way more expensive.
    I have the 16-50 kit lens too and use it regularly. It isn't the greatest lens but it is so small it turns my a6500 into a convenient pocket camera. Again with Clear Image Zoom I can get out to 100mm with it.
    My f2.8 20mm was probably a waste of money. I bought it as a pancake but it isn't that much smaller than the kit lens.
    The sharpest lens I have is the f1.8 35mm but it is too limiting for most run and gun days, although it is great for indoor shots where there is movement in the subject like indoor sports.

    It's hard to believe that I still didn't find any lens with constant or fixed aperture that provides that much of a focal length range. This lens may be more than six years old now, but boy this is my all time favourite lens. Once I've seen any brand come up with similar product like this Sony lens, I definitely wouldn't bother selling it.

    Hi Dunna, do you break 180 degree rule by making your shutterspeed higher than twice of its fps? like 120fps at 1/500 to get sharper footage? does slowing the footages down mask the juddery effect cause by high shutterspeed? thanks

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  Před 5 lety +1

      Generally I try not to break the 180 rule but sometimes I do just for exposure but I don’t think it gives you “sharper” footage necessarily. I guess less motion blur could be considered sharper 🤷🏻‍♂️ . And no, slowing the footage down more wont mask it as far as I’m aware.

Recently used it to shoot a wedding video and to take pictures of the guests at the wedding. While I had my Sigma 16mm lens with me, I wasn't tempted to use it. I always get consistent good results with the lens to be honest. Would be good if Sony released a f2.8 constant aperture version of this lens. I would be snapping it up asap....

    Agree, I have had this lens for a couple years and it is my walk about lens. At f4 it is not a great event lens as auto focus will hunt in low light. If you have had this lens for a bit, there is a lens firmware update that seemed to me to improve it performance on the a6500 that I shoot with.

    Would this work well for our CZcams podcast that is shot at an inside bar with a distance of about 6’ from the camera and two people siting about 3’ apart behind the bar. For the Sony a6000 series I would happy with a faster version of the kit lens, say a 16-70 f2.8. I know there is the Zeiss 16-70 f4 but the reviews on that are very iffy plus it costs almost $1000. Surely someone can do better? (I'd even settle for a 16-50 or 16-55 f2.8). [edit] I should say that the small form factor is a big deal for me, which is my main objection to the 18-105. Plus I prefer wider at the low end than long reach.

      @dunnadidit  Před 5 lety +2

      I hear you 100%. I wouldn’t hold your breath though. I would even love to see a bit of a less expensive 16-35 f2.8. The only one is the master and it’s like $3000(CAD) and it’s a big lens! I’m going to be doing a comparison between the 16-70 and the 18-105 soon. The 16-70 is nice and small but I hear what you’re saying about the reviews. It’s not the sharpest lens for sure (still better than the kit lens though I suppose).

      sony zies 16-70, rocks. Buy it on special or from a second hand exchange. I bought it on special (30% off xmas deal) I'm stoked with it... I also have the sony 90mmG so know that level of sharpness. The 16-70, being less sharp than the 90 et al (marginally), gives a slight softness that I like. I bought the 90 for portraits, and macro of course, but for portraits I'll often switch to the zies. So per the video, if I had only one choice I'd sell the gear for heroin.

    Hey there. Great video! I have an a6000. After my 1655 kit lens broke, I’ve been looking for a replacement. My main focus is video. And I want super smooth zooms
    I’ve been debating between buying another 1655 and the Sony vct-vpr1 remote since it gives the 1655 a slow steady zoom
    After seeing that the 18105 has a slow zoom on the lens itself, and constant f4, I realized this is a much better (albeit more pricey) option.
    My question is, do you know of a different APS-C lens with oss and power zoom with a slow smooth zoom function, that is smaller than this lens?

      I couldn’t agree more with the title! The 18-105mm f4 G is permanently mounted on my a6000. I am shooting 90% of the time in urban environments (street photography and cityscapes) and the versatility of this lens lefts nothing to be desired. It ticks all the three of my must have boxes: build quality, fast and accurate focus mechanism and constant aperture.
      And a tip: the image quality can be superb at infinity only by MF. I thought that this lens was pretty soft for far subjects (like landscapes or cityscapes) but after some experimentation with MF I managed to shoot images that rivals my other Zeiss prime lenses! While for closer focus distances or portraits the AF is 100% accurate, to infinity struggles heavily and this is maybe a reason for the inconsistent score on various reviews in terms of sharpness. But, no, this lens is very sharp if you can achieve correct focus (I have very high keeper rate with MF, is very smooth in this lens).

    I always tell people when they are picking out lenses to think what they would use them for, what situations, how close is the subject, is it large or small, etc. For example, how useful is a long range telephoto in close quarters. Or, how useful is a super wide angle at a baseball game. Sure, arguably you still could get interesting photos depending what shot you’re going for. I heard one photographer once say, “zoom lenses for day, fixed primes for night,” and i always thought that was a fairly solid idea. I find myself in so many situations always thinking “DAMN, if only I had one more stop of light!” So I tend to lean towards primes, haha.

    Since this will be at night at a local club, I would like to use an speedlight as I tested the built in flash and it sometimes creates a shadow due to the length of this lens.
    I have a Yongnuo YN565EX from when I had my Nikon D90 camera but can't seem to make it work. Do only specific speedlights work with the Sony A6400 (eg Godox/Flashpoint)??
    If I'm up for a new speedlight, what do you recommend? If I'm in an environment where I can't bounce the light off the ceiling, would the built-in diffuser be ok if pointed directly at the subject, or should I also get some additional diffuser attachment to go over the flash to help soften the light?
    I would love to see a video on using "on body" flash such as the built in flash and/or speedlight for the A6400 for those of us who want a portable system for when we go out somewhere.
    I would appreciate any feedback.

    Man! What if I have to film a video podcast with my a6400? Which Lens do u suggest me to use? I'll be in a normal room, with a desk and 4 people (a sort of "L", with 2 / 2 ) . I have also to do, some zoom on faces ....I'll have - other the a6400 - 2 others S20 Ultra as camera, in order to cover different angles, but I thought the a6400 was the one that will let me to zoom on faces, in order to do a good work on post matching all the cameras.... thank you man! Sorry if it was long
    Please I'm just a beginner, let me know...Thank you so so much! :)

  • @stevekdigitalworx
    @stevekdigitalworx Před 5 lety +3

    I've now binge watched 4 of your reviews, so now I feel comfortable asking my question. I'm brand new to photography beyond point/shoots and my phone. So new I haven't even bought the camera yet (Doing that on Friday). I had already decided that I was getting the 18-105 for my versatile lens, so this video just solidified that decision. Where I'm in purchase paralysis is, I was planning on buying the Sigma 30/1.4 or the 16/1.4 lens. I asked on a FB group what they thought and all I got was it depends on what I like to shoot. I don't have a camera yet... I don't know what I like to shoot. So, as a novice should I stay with only the 18-105, or to add on to your statement in this review, if you could only have TWO lenses, what would they be? Would the 30mm be redundant (except for the better low light performance)? Would the 16mm be a better choice for wide angle shots, again because of the low light performance, or is the 18mm of the 18-105 "good enough" for a beginner?

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  Před 5 lety +3

      Ok... here’s two things...
      1. If it was me - I would do the 18-105 and the 30mm f1.4.
      2. Here’s what I suggest. Get your camera with the 18-105. And then go shoot a whoooolllleeee bunch! If you find yourself at the wide end at 18mm quite often after shooting a bunch, get the 16mm. If you find yourself zooming in a bit, maybe the 30mm. Find out what you are going to shoot most with the versatile lens. And then get a sharper, faster lens at that focal length!
      Hope that helps!

    • @stevekdigitalworx
      @stevekdigitalworx Před 5 lety +1

      @@dunnadidit why the 30mm over the 16mm? As far as shooting a bunch to see what I like, I was hoping to take this whole kit (and kaboodle) on my trip to the coast of Spain in a month. I'm kind of in a unique situation that won't allow me to even have my hands on the camera until I'm in Spain (I can DM you on IG if your want to know more).
      Here's what I'm envisioning shooting most at least for this vacation: skyline from charter boat; various buildings; my wife in front of various scenery; my wife indoors; museum stuff indoors.
      I know I could get away with the 18-105 for virtually all of that, but I worry about low light situations, especially in museums and restaurants.

    I have been nothing but happy since I bought this lens. I will say this though: I also like the Zeiss 16-70 as a nice alternative to this lens. You lose a little range, and the power zoom... but for a quick run and gun zoom, I like the sharpness of the Zeiss lens a little better. Having said that, if you’re using a gimbal and you need the ability to zoom while running, this 18-105 is a must have. Nice review man.
