    I'm considering using this lens to replace my 16-50 power zoom, I like the performance along with its versatility. Also, thank you so much for doing all these reviews and videos about the Sony A6000 and accessories!! I love my A6000 and I have been needing a reliable, comprehensive place where I can seek out more information about the A6000, you're awesome! Keep doing what you're doing!!

    Thanks so much for this review!!! Your comparison kit lens vs 16mm f2.8 review also really helped. I mostly shoot video on the a6300, with sigma primes and although the lenses are great for photography, I've found major issues with auto focus breathing on 19mm and 30mm and wasn't sure what I should do....... After seeing your reviews, I thought I'd ignore the pixel peepers and I went out and bought this lens. I've been shooting on a gimbal mostly at 16mm with this new lens and I'm really happy with the results! Phase detection auto focus and OSS are awesome! So much for such a low price! Again many thanks TECHNOLOGY MAFIA, you're a legend!!!

      I just have the kitlens and a canonFD 50mm 1.8 not super sharp. In the kitlens I love going 20mm for wideangle, but instead of getting the prime 20mm sharper, my money is better spent on the 35mm? will slightly change my photos style, I like that challenge. thanks!

  • @johndonaldson5126
    @johndonaldson5126 Pƙed 5 lety +3

    I love my 18-105. In fact I updated my camera body, sold off alpha mount lenses, and bought new lenses just to have access to this 18-105. I kept finding that there was a gap between my 16-50 and my 70-200 and all too often I wanted to shoot in that gap. Having the lens go all the way out to 105 is great. The lens isn't very heavy either. Attached to my a6500 it makes a great carry around package. This lens serves me about 80-90% of the time. It isn't my sharpest lens but for day to day use it is sharp enough.
    I have the kit lens too and use it. The main thing about the kit lens is how small it is. With the kit lens attached to my a6500 it becomes a pocket camera. I can literally slip it into my jacket pocket. The kit lens image quality isn't as good as the 18-105 and of course the zoom range is less but as a run and gun lens it is fine.

    • @TheGreatGandalf09
      @TheGreatGandalf09 Pƙed 7 lety +4

      Studat Zeiß has huge differences in the series. In my case the Zeiss is much blurrier than the Sony especially at open aperture f4. I send it to Sony and they said it is in the tolerance of the 16/70. On the other hand my Sony 18/105 is very sharp and defeats the Zeiss in the direct test. In many forums the Zeiss is discussed due to this great variation of quality with the 16/70. Maybe you have one of the better ones.

    • @windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823
      @windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823 Pƙed 6 lety

      Studat that's not what i saw. In portrait, it was slightly better zoomed up. But it bleeds when you zoom up on trees to blue sky. It made lines better on his video of a tennis court. Slightly better coloring on grass. But a jerky full zoom, which was an issue.
      I didn't see a 300.00 difference for Zeiss myself, and neither did this guy here.
      Now, what about very low light? No one has reviewed them side by in very low light...that's why I wanted the Zeiss, myself, but it's GOT to hold up in low light, not bleed colors and not hitch in video. Inexcusable for a thousand $$ German lens.

      The Sigma 16mm will be a much sharper lens. It will not give you the versatility to zoom in 105mm though. With the Sigma you have to zoom with your feet. Personally, I like primes more than zoom lenses because of their size and sharpness.

So I'm sticking with my RX100 for now which was superior to the a5100+1650 combo. I'm not saying the a5100 is worse, the kit lens made it worse.

    Hello, I am considering the 18-105, I’m especially interested in the wide open performance at the long end, in the range from 85 to 105mm. Would you be so kind to share a couple of raw images taken wide open at the long end? Two pictures that in your opinion show the maximum potential of the lens. I would be awesome if you could,

    Thanks Oddiraju . I bought the Neewer 35mm f1.7 manual focus lens. I am happy with it. and also it was affordable. I also bought the Sony 55-210mm zoom lens as I needed greater reach. Happy with the zoom lens too.

    Thanks for the comparison. I found it really useful, as I wondered myself whether to buy a 18-105 G Lens as I wish myself a lens with some tele, good aperature and a good quality of photos..
    But this video made me a little more satisfied with my 16-50 Kit, as my budget is not that huge at all..

    Great review! Can you do a comparison of the 18-105 and 35f1.8 prime lens. I've been eyeing the 35mm as replacement for my a5100's kit lens but after seeing your video, I'm seriously considering the 18-105 as it seems versatile enough to be an all-around lens.

    • @smoothmoose
      @smoothmoose Pƙed 7 lety

      vanquisher23, got both lenses. hard to just pick one. but if you're budget strapped and don't mind the extra size then get only the 18-105 as the range and versitility makes it fun. the 35/1.8 is great and better IQ of course, but at times a I want the wider angle or the telezoom. but the 35 is more compact of course and is very usable as a walk around. you can shoot one handed easily. the 18-105 get heavy after awhile to shoot one handed.

    • @poman911
      @poman911 Pƙed 7 lety +3

      You cannot beat the 35 f1.8 for image quality: it comes out with very shallow DOF and the focus is super fast. And for low light, you cannot beat this lens. I use the 18-105 for events where I can't move fast enough to get to where I need to be. The image quality is really good but not excellent.
      I started with the 35 f1.8 for a year and only got the 18-105 for the reason above.

    I settled for the Zeiss 16-70mm f4 instead of this. It was way too large. The only issue I had with the Zeiss I'd the f4. The kit zoom lens is kind of soft all around. The rating is not so great with the reviewers. Got myself a Sigma 30mm f1.4 for indoor instead of the power zoom.

    • @ArthurR
      @ArthurR  Pƙed 7 lety +1

      Good choice with the Sigma, that is an awesome lens. I have yet to test the zeiss. How do you like it?

    • @swonghobby
      @swonghobby Pƙed 7 lety

      TechnologyMafia the Zeiss 16-70mm is great. It's much more versatile than the 18-105mm. I'm not a pro nor have both lens to compare, but I would think the Zeiss would outperform the Sony. It's a bit more expensive as well. It's a little soft at the short end and the far end wide open, I'm sure it's the same with most of the zoom lens. Now I'm debating between the Sony 20mm f2.8 or the Sigma 19mm f2.8. One is small and one has better IQ.

    hi can you drop some light on comparison between sony 18-200 or 18-105mm IQ. It will be mostly used for travel n street photography. Also can we use digital zoom after 105 range to compensate the reach of 200mm.
