    SONY 18-105 F4 OSS - IS IT WORTH TO UPGRADE?
    I made all the test footage by my Sony a6400 APSC camera, but it's even better on the NEW Sony a6700 or in the fx30.

    In this video i make an in-depth lens comparison between the Sony 18-105 f4 OSS vs the sony 16-50mm kit lens. I bought the sony 18-105 because its crazy flexible. You can compare the images and video footages next to each other.
    In my opinion the most versatile and one of the best APSC lens which made for the sony crop sensor cameras. You can see their real abilities while taking photos and videos.

    Great review. I just returned from Japan and the Sony 18-105 f/4 was my lens of choice for APS-C street photography. The Sony’s good range and quick autofocus allowed me to stay far from the subjects to achieve the natural street photography look with lots of compression. Compare to when I use 35mm or 50mm lens the subject sometimes appears uncomfortable because I was standing too close to them (and to make things worse sometimes my shadow gets in to the photo). Of course no lens is perfect so at night I shoot with a f/1.2 portrait prime.

    The 10-18 and 18-105 f4 OSS lenses are an essential pair for APS-C. Eventually add Sigma and Viltrox f1.4 lenses (16, 23, 30, 56)for night shooting and you have an almost perfect kit. Maybe add the Laowa 65mm macro if you like getting very close to subjects.
    But if I had to have just one lens, it would be the 18-105. In a single word - versatile. The 10-18 is better for vlogging, but most other things, the 18-105 is king.

      Thanks! I appreciate. 😎🙏 i would go for the 18-105 because of the oss and constant f4 aperture. I’m not fan of the 3.5-5.6 variable aperture. Maybe for photography you get some extra range. But between 105 and 135 there are no big differences. So i would buy the 18-105 ;)

  • @charlieseligman3176

    Thanks for the video! I got my Sony 18-105mm lens back in 2017 to replace the 16-50mm kit lens that came with my 𝛼6300. It's been a very good lens since. I originally got the camera and the 18-105 lens to shoot stills. But then, I found out from a colleague that both were really good for video when that colleague hired me and the camera to shoot some B-roll on a small commercial shoot. All these years that 18-105 has been my go to lens and has rarely come off the 𝛼6300.
    A few times I put the 18-105 on my old FS5 MkII. That combo really worked well for run and gun (fast auto focus) and the zoom worked as a true variable speed zoom with the FS5's zoom control. More recently, I have used the 18-105 lens with my FX30. The AI auto focus works great. The lens has proven its versatility by being able to shoot wide for doc style filming and then settling in with a longer focal length for sit down "formal" interviews.
    Today you can see that my Sony 18-105mm lens has been well used. It's scratched, dented and even got hit by a baseball once. It has worked in every type of bad weather from extreme heat and humidity to cold and rain, but continues to work great. The glass is clean and the inner workings -- focus, zoom, OSS -- still work fine. It's a testament to Sony's commitment to quality.

    • @petersroom
      @petersroom  Před 6 měsíci +3

      Hi! Thank you for asking! I would go for the tamron 17-70 f2.8 but not only because of the aperture. The close focusing distance is also better and between 17-50 range its much sharper than the sony 18-105. You lose 35mm on the longer end, but i think it's a fair tradeoff. Don't get me wrong, the 18-105 is a great lens, but overall the tamron is a better choice. Have a niceday mate!😎

    • @petersroom
      @petersroom  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Sure! It depends on your needs too. I think first I would pick a good zoom lens, which can cover a lot of focal lengths and then if I need, I would buy more specific lenses for the specific jobs. First the sigma 18-50 f2.8 is the best bang for you buck right now. It's versatile, good in low light and 18-50 range is really great for videography. Lightweight. The constant 2.8 aperture is really great. It's a nice all around lens.
      But if you don't have stabilization in your camera then you should use a stabilized lens for videography like the tamron 17-70 f2.8 or the sony 18-105 f4 oss.
      The tamron 17-70 f2.8 more versatile, than the sigma, but it's also more pricy. The 18-105 f4 still a good lens too. It's a great compromise. I really like 105 on the longer end. But I say again, my lens recommendation is heavily depends on your needs. If you ask me, I would go for the tamron 17-70 f2.8. I hope it could help. 😎

    This lens with Sony S-cine3 colour science... BUTTER!

  • @forneverarrow
    @forneverarrow Před 4 měsíci

    That’s my main lens for the a6000. I am using it for anything and I can’t find something better, especially for the price. Something to be considered about the aperture: the f stops are not a constant value (like the T stops on cinema lenses). It’s a variable and it has to do with the total diameter of the lens barrel. For example, I have a tiny TTArtisan 23mm f/1.4 lens with a 43mm thread (for comparison sake). When i shoot wide open at night, the light transmission I get is just slightly more than that of the 18-105 f4 at f/4, actually, in order to shoot at 1/30th shutter speed the first needs ISO 800 while the later ISO 1600 which is just one stop difference. But from 1.4 to f4 there’s two stops, so if both lenses had the same diameter then the f1.4 would have needed ISO 400. I am saying that because most of the E mount (APSC) primes are 52mm, much smaller than the 72mm on the 18-105 f4. That way the zoom lens will gonna look brighter than it seems by the number.
    Anyway, this lens is a serious tool. It’s internal focus and zooming, has OSS, constant f4, the G series optics are great (it was the best in class before the GM came out in 2014, and this lens released in 2013, if that says something). The only gripe I have with this is the fact that it is a battery hog! That’s because everything works electronically in the lens, from zooming an focusing to OSS, when attached to the camera it takes about 30% more battery on every shooting session compared to my other Sony 16-35mm GM or the Zeiss Touit 32mm f1.8. But it is what it is…

    • @petersroom
      @petersroom  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Thank you for sharing! It's a really nice review. I meant under constant aperture that it's not going to 5.6 or above when you're zooming like in the kit lens or other zoom lenses. So in video you dont see dramatic exposure changes. But you're right, the T stops are much more percise than f stops. I think this lens is a great workhorse and you get a lot for this price. I didn't experience any battery issues while using this, but maybe because i always changed the batteries on my a6400. It didn't last long no matter which lens i used. But thank you again for sharing. That was really informative. Have a nice day!

    I am just starting out in the world of photography and video with cameras, and it has come to my attention that the photos you take in the video before editing them come out very dark (at -2). Do you do it that way on purpose or is it the lens that doesn't let you take them brighter?

    • @petersroom
      @petersroom  Před 5 měsíci +2

      Hi! thank you for asking! The f4 sometimes could limit a little bit. Especially if you don't want any motion blur or shake in your photos, you set the shutter speed higher, but you can't compensate enough with the f4 aperture. I could only push the iso up, but in my experience, It's better if I underexpose the pictures a little bit and try to save it a little in post, than push the iso up to the correct exposure value. The higher isos could make some bad artifacts like heavy grain and color shifts. But it's a preference, it works for me, because I know my limits, and I feel that level where I couldn't correct a picture in post. But nowadays I could save almost everything with AI noice reduction in Lightroom, it could cause a little bit cartoonish image if you overdo, but if you adjust it right, it looks real. So usually I don't care about my raw pictures underexposed or not if the final results are stunning :D Maybe here a lot of photographers get to their heads, but in street photography usually you don't have ideal conditions to make a perfect exposed or composed picture. Or if you try to adjust the camera to set the correct settings, you can miss the moment. My pictures is not perfect, I'm not either, but that's why your images looks original and real. And also after a lot of bad photos, slowly you could able to make a good photo from a bad one with editing. So if you ask me, don't worry about whether the image is dark or not, you'd be surprised how much information can be retrieved from the raw files. Have a nice day! 😎

    Hi Peter, I want to do travel and street photography but I am torn between sigma 18-50 vs this 18-105 sony lens. Which one do you recommend for better image quality?

    • @petersroom
      @petersroom  Před 8 měsíci +5

      Hi! I think the sigma has better image quality and better in low light, because of the f2.8. But i think, in this case for travelling and street photography the versatility is more important. For me especially. The question here that would you go with the sigma, which is lighter smaller, it has a little bit better image quality and low light performance and a little bit better bokeh. It would serve you perfectly. Also for photography the sigma a little bit better and if the compact form factor is important for you, i would go for the sigma. Anyway i think this should be the perfect "kit lens" 18-50mm f2.8 constant aperture. The 18-105 is a little bit bulkier, it has extreme good zoom range, it also has optical stabilization, which is soo good if you shoot at the longer end. It gives you a lot of flexibility over the sigma. If you ask me, i would go for the sony. Its a perfect lens for me and the oss complements my a6400 soo good (it doesnt have image stabilization), but im a hybrid shooter, so maybe you dont need that range or the oss. But i think the longer end 50mm on the sigma is quite limited next to the 105mm while traveling. I am sure that you could make beautiful pictures with the sigma and you wouldn't regret it, but my heart goes for the sony. I hope it helps. Have a nice day mate!

    Awesome video mate. I am planning to buy 6700. Do u suggest 18 to 50mm f/2.8 Sigma or 18-105 sony f/4? From your video, I don't see any issue with the sharpness of Sony, though some other reviewers claim that it is giving little bit diffused look on videos. Did you face such issue? With power zoom and OSS, is it not worth going with Sony?

    • @petersroom
      @petersroom  Před 6 měsíci +2

      Thanks! I really appreciate. The 18-105 f4 oss is not a perfect lens. It's not great in low light, it's not razor sharp etc... But i think it's a really great all around lens. Most of the time you don't need optically perfect lenses for video. You can see a lot of times that hollywood moovies are not that sharp also. If i want to mention a "con" i say the f4. Sometimes it's limiting, especially indoors. But usually nowadays you have great iso performances, and you can go to higher isos. I dont remember exactly, but maybe iso 2500 is the second native with the a6700, which is not bad. And also i recommend to use some lights indoors anyway. Almost all the time i prefer the great flexibility more than the aperture. But, back to your question. I think the sigma 18-50 f2.8 should be the "kit lens" for the sony apsc lineup. You have a great midrange zoom coverage with nice constant 2.8 aperture. I think that lens is really good. If you want similar results with extended range, i recommend the tamron 17-70 f2.8. It's kind the same, but you get 20 more mm. The tamron is like the sigma with steroids. If i had to pick one, i would go for the tamron. But we have an other competitor, the sony 18-105 f4 oss. I think its a great compromise, you get more range, which can be really, really useful but sacrifise the f2.8 and you get f4. I think it's fair enough. The 18-105 is very useful in a lot of situations. If i dont know what situation would i getting into, i really like that flexibility. So overall. I think nowadays, judging a lens because of the sharpness, or flare, or chromatic aberration is not worth it. Almost all the lenses are near perfect optically (much better than the old lenses, where those could be a real problem). So if you ask me, i dont care about sharpness or flaring. I care about the form factor, how fast the lens is (aperture), the focal length (flexibility) and the close focusing distance. And i pick different lenses for different jobs. I think the best bang for buck budget all arounder lens is the sigma 18-50 f2.8 right now it could do the 80% what tamron could do. The most versatile lens is the tamron 17-70 f2.8.I really like that lens, so i think here you get the most for your money. And last the best zoom range lens is the sony 18-105 f4 oss. Really good, stabilized, You get covered from wide shots to telephoto range. I didn't regret buying the sony. I hope it could help, if you have questions, feel free to ask. Have a nice day mate!

    I bought the 18-105mm as my first lens. I ended up not using it anymore after buying 70-200mm f2.8 and sigma 30mm f1.4

      Those are great for complement each other. I still use my 18-105 because a lot of times i dont have time to change lenses.

    Great photos and review, I’ve enjoyed it. But the accent makes my ears suffer sometimes. Come on, you are not a Pakistani xiaomi reviewer, I believe you will be able to figure this out💡

      Thanks! ☺️ you should check my earlier videos, it’s much worse. My accent is terrible, i know 😅. I learn english currently, but hard to break my native language pronunciation habits. Maybe it will change later.

      @petersroom I'm floored you gave this comment the time of day. Nobody should have to apologize for having an accent.
      And what the hell does "Pakistani xiaomi reviewer" even mean?
