So there was a more efficient play in match 3, for anyone interested: instead of holding back the inscription of ruin when the opponent has two cards in hand, play the inscription to force a counterspell. That way when you tap the lantern they have to get rid of their last card to stay alive, only you have enough mana to untap it. Victory without letting them find something massive, like an Ultimatum or Ugin, for example.

    • @TigSu

@@lifeisawesome1391 Exactly, you can “recycle” all his permanents including his lands. The best thing is that it uses your opponents strategy against itself in such a vile way it’s disturbing. You combo and you play their lategame potential against themselves. If they can manage to survive somehow, then you can untap the lantern a few more times with their mana, which is in most cases lethal considering that you just halved their life total. It’s perfection.

One of my friends back in HS played an amazing black/white discard deck, dark rituals, hymns, specters, mind twist, demonic tutor, icy manipulators, racks, etc. and then white was only for removal like swords to plowshares, disenchant and balance. We went to a ComicCon tourney, and he won, and his prize was an unlimited black lotus (which was only worth about $300 at the time, haha!) . having tons of fun with this deck, thank you! Some thoughts:
-- I agree with some commentators below that a couple Duress are worth it. A discard of e.g. Embercleave can practically win a game.
-- Benefits from at least 2-3 Castle Locthwain, as you said.
-- At least 2 Faceless Haven and snow swamps may be a worthwhile addition? It's such a powerful card that it may be worth messing up the mana curve a bit.
-- There's also a couple Strixhaven cards that could be worth adding:
--- Baleful Mastery -- replace/add removal and deals with Planeswalkers, which are everywhere and pretty much game ending, plus exile is a great benefit when so many creatures can come back from graveyards.
--- Go Blank -- I could see this replacing Inscription of Ruin in this deck, as I never find myself using/needing Inscription of Ruin's 2nd ability, nor rarely as removal. Go Blank handles the two things this decks seems to want to do most: make the opponent discard cards and shut down opponent graveyard shenanigans.
--- Sedgemoor Witch - Nighthawk Scavenger suffers from some conflicts of interest in this deck. He wants a big opponent graveyard, but that's an incredibly dangerous thing in the current meta, and Tymaret is emptying the graveyard anyway. I wonder if Sedgemoor Witch might replace Nighthawk here, to just make things messy / complicate the battlefield for a couple turns - draw removal and chump block - while this deck builds its real mechanics and win-cons. Pests will also help Rankle (when both players sac creatures).
Please post again if you experiment with this build more! So much potential here and there's so much room to experiment. Thank you!

The only thing missing for you to break a barrier of engagement is: Turning up the volume of the music just a little bit, just to fill in the blanks. And play more rare cards and push the power level to 11. I've been theorizing since almost a year and a half observing the CGB's growth vs yours vs MONO vs Ali vs Qwaazar77, and content creators that seem to either; embrace high power lvl jank with unpopular cards or play high-end competitive magic in mythic, have a steady growth rate at about 15k ->20K->34/40k->63/80->100K, I also took into account collaborations and such (obviously youtube is never easy so one has to resort to that kind of thing yada yada). But anyway, my grain of sand. I like the deck, I went against a yorion deck and it cried a lot before roping me.

Great deck, loved it. I wanted to splash a bit of red, so I added Kroxa which works well with the inscription kicked (3 discards), and since we're not doing anything with our graveyard, it's worth it. I took away 2 Poison the Cup and added 2 Soul Shatter (which works well with Tergrid). Also, I used snow covered swamps and included Faceless haven and a couple of Castle Lochtwain. I've always loved discard, since Hypnotic Specter and Himn to Tourach

I confess I have built a mono-black Rogue Discard deck - I'm sorry. Why Covetous Urge isn't often used in those decks, or Mill in general, truly baffles me. Its won me so many games I would have lost otherwise. Sure it's a little slow but the ability to use their best cards or situational cards against them is often game changing, especially in mirror matches.
Also it's OK to be evil in casual cube - the amount of broken, degenerate higher tier decks I play against on a regular basis has left my soul cold. I'm still drumming for that permanent Pauper/Artisan queue but it'll likely never happen 🤷‍♂️

Discard isn't viable according to the theory of value. However it can sometimes prove very efficient when opponent discards a high value card.
Right now it has gotten stronger with the M21 cmc4 Lili who can pretty much close the deal and run away with the game (if she doesn't trip cuz, you know, running with a dress ain't easy) and the brand new Tergrid that you can play especially if you have some self esteem and don't quite want to indulge in tapping islands for Zareth San.
Discard ain't exactly the worst thing to play against. IMO just slightly worse than counterspells. And both are still way way behind mill, the supreme heresy for degenerates who need hugs.
