Chevrolet Corvette "Cobra Killer" Grand Sport by Superformance

  • GM killed off the 1963 Corvette Grand Sport project, designed to beat Ford's Shelby Cobra on track. But Superformance builds a "continuation" model Grand Sport. That's this muscle time machine.
    It took a decade of legal wrangling with General Motors, obtaining the original molds and design documents, and finding an authentic Grand Sport body to use as a baseline.

    Strangely that is the car Carrol Shelby blamed for ruining the Cobra......... he told a story of how the Cobra was always going to be no bigger than 289 but when the Grand sport came out Ford rushed through development of the 427 because they thought it would be built in big number and as Shelby put's it "Ruined the handling of the Cobra"

      Sorry to burst your bubble, but the original Cobra's you're talking about didn't make 600 horses. Not even the 427s, and the 289s were the ones that won races. They have made a couple million vettes in almost 70 years, but they ain't all 60s models. Still a rich man's toy to have a C2 Corvette.

      @@kc-km8du its a shame the grand sport program was shut down by gm because when the Grand Sports were dialed in they were kicking absolute ass. in nassau speed week they were 10 seconds a lap faster than Cobras and Ferraris. The Grand Sports struggled long distance endurance racing though the car was in lack of a better term, too powerful for its own good long distance atleast, the car would break down and retire before it could finish simply because it was that fast and not exactly built to withstand it for a very long amount of time. but in a short race the Grand Sport was an absolute monster.

    • @drive
      @drive  Před 5 lety +5

      That's the Ford-fan theory. Another is that GM pulled out of factory-backed motorsports in '63 because -- with U.S. market share closing in on 55% -- GM management was concerned the government would break up the company (under the Sherman Antitrust Act), and so was becoming more sensitive about adhering to the so-called "gentlemen's agreement" (created after the '55 LeMans tragedy) that was supposed to keep U.S. automakers out of motorsports.

    • @kc-km8du
      @kc-km8du Před 5 lety +1

      @@drive It came straight from the mouth of Carroll himself followed by the words it was a shame because it would have been fun to compete against them. Shelby already dominated North America and went on to win the GT class at Le Mans by 64. What I would take as fan theory is the story about Shelby Racing Team drivers flipping coins to see who would win. Perhaps you are right, but maybe Shelby was the nail in the coffin.

      @@kc-km8du Carroll was the greatest, and an epic smack talker. No doubt he had the upper hand in racing, and an excellent partner-in-mayhem with Hank Ford II. Chevy was dealing with a boardroom full of GM stiffs. Would have been fun to see what happened if Chevy/Pontiac stayed in it for real. (Furtive boxes of parts to TransAm teams, nothwithstanding.)

When GM heard about the 427 Coba the pulled the plug on the Grand Sport. So it never became the Cobra killer GM was hoping for.

      @@jameswestfall8028 The Grand Sport was ten seconds faster than Cobras and Ferraris at Nassau Speed Week. The Grand Sport was cancelled because of GMs self imposed racing ban, the only reason the program even took off in the first place was because Zora did it behind there backs. Carrol said himself that the 427 hindered the handling of the Cobra and the 289s actually performed much better on the track than the 427, so actually a 427 Cobra would probably lose by an even larger margin to a Grand Sport than the 289s did.
