Nuking a Highway Into Existence
Not too long ago, the US government hatched a plan to blow up a mountain range with 22 nuclear bombs to clear a path for a new highway. And they almost got away with it.
[READ THE FULL STORY HERE: www.thedrive.com/news/40221/that-time-the-united-states-almost-made-a-new-route-66-with-nuclear-bombs]
Back in the early 1960s, America was busy building out the new Interstate Highway System. But officials ran into a problem in the California desert: an entire mountain range sat in the path planned for I-40 to bypass iconic old Route 66.
Thanks to a government program set up to find productive uses for nuclear bombs, a plan was born. Instead of spending years carving a roadway through the Bristol Mountains, what if we did it all in a day with a bunch of nukes? The bombs would be buried underground and detonated in sequence to blast out a 3.5-mile-long canyon for the highway.
The fact that the nearest town was just 10 miles away didn’t phase scientists and engineers. Nor did concerns about fallout spreading across Southern California. Project Carryall, as it was called, was viewed as a groundbreaking new way to speed up mega infrastructure projects.
In the end, after years of planning, the government was forced to give up on it and build I-40 with boring old TNT. But not for the reasons you might think.

Ford went super stock racing in the early 1960's, but with Galaxies that were too heavy, even with fibreglass and aluminum body parts. Dodge set everything on its ear with the 1962 Dart that was a midsized car so it could swallow the 413 Max Wedge RB engine but be lighter than the other cars. Ford responded with the Thunderbolt and Dodge would return with the Hemi Darts and Barracudas from Hurst. The teardrop on the hood really isn't a scoop, it's to clear the fresh air system and vent out the heat.

Pontiac first invented the Safari wagon to compete with Chevy's Nomad wagon, which itself was designed to be a stylish station wagon (named after the depot hacks that would shuttle you and your luggage from the train station to your house--esp. if you bought an entire house kit from Sears and Roebuck to build your homestead).

Chevy invented the Corvair (combination of CORVette and belAIR) to compete with the most popular import in 1960's America, the Volkswagon (peoples' car). GM shared the floor pan in 1961 with Buick, Pontiac, and Oldsmobile to make the compact cars you heard about in the movie "My Cousin Vinnie", because planning for cars begins years before revealing, and 1958 was a recession year in America. It soon revealed two problems, however, one being the swing rear axle. It only pivoted at the differential area of the rear axle, not a big problem on a 36 hp VW Beetle but a problem on a 6 cylinder with more horsepower. In a corner at speed, the tire's tread wasn't flat on the ground at all, as the axle it was attached to would swing in a 45 degree arc. Less grip, less traction in a corner, and a heavy engine right there to swing the back end of the car like a pendulum. By the time Ford had a competitor (the Mustang), GM had put two U joints into each rear axle. But folks who owned a Corvair for a while learned that if there was an oil leak, it came into the passenger compartment once the heat was turned on, since there was no radiator or coolant coming into the engine. Not helping in the reliability department was a cooling fan on a belt that made a 90 degree bend over the top of the engine. If you have the enthusiast magazines of the time, you can find all sorts of gizmos to put on a Corvair to personalize it. It was a European looking commuter car that appealed to the young crowd--until the Mustang came along. The Corvair would get a turbo charger to compete with the Mustang's solid lifter V8 engine, but eventually Chevy would make a SuperSport version of the Nova to try to capture market share of folks wanting a sporty economy car. the Corvair would become a great second hand car, as backyard engineers saw the potential of the midengine design--some even make tricycle motorcycles with its drivetrain. GM would repeat the design again in the 1980's with the Pontiac Fiero, but not offer a pickup truck, van or station wagon version.

I Navigated for a friend with a 93, V4 engine the SAAB exceeded the drivers talent and we ended up with a fallen tree stuffed into the engine. Body was fine but the engine had been push down and ended up behind the car. Welch stages of the Lombard RAC, Stig Bomqvist drove the 99 Combi T and he punched the start of our stage so hard it chucked a slate into a new Ford through the seat and into the door. But during the stage Stig managed to fell a tree and finished 1 sec up on the Volvo. My dad had the 96 Combi, Mum drove over an Austin Maxi then hit ARMCO barrier and ended up in a ditch with my Grandmother sitting unperturbed listening to the radio whist the tow truck arrived, the car was back on the road later that month with new bumper and a headlight the Austin was destroyed. Then a 900 which was in my opinion not as good as the Combi. Generally the SAAB was a sound chassis and very strong, I would love another 99 Combi T. Thanks for posting, that is a nice car you have there.

Go see Sedan Crater! In January I did the first public (bus) tour in years at the NNSS gov site. (Mercury, NV) - closed due to the C' @#$%. This included a visit to the Sedan Crater site which was tested for such purposes including future 'Panama Canals'. The tour included other iconic locations like the Turret (camera), etc,). Absolutely incredible, accessing via Mercury NV and the NNSS site is larger than the state of Rhode Island (worth seeing on Google Earth/Satellite view) - part of 'the Box' (shared by Groom Lake and Tonopah Test Range). It's a FREE tour and part of their related outreach program. No cameras/GPS/etc. on your person, tour bus from the Atomic Museum in Las Vegas. One of the most incredible 'behind the scenes' views I've experienced (beyond my years working as a Fed. contractor/Agent), the moment we passed the heavily guarded/vetted main gate I was honestly overcome with excitement being immersed in such history (reading/internet) but now physically seeing it in person with an incredible tour guide (retired after decades working at NNSS). PS - just checked the site and August 26th at 10am/PT openings for 2025 submissions will be posted. Those I chatted with on the bus did the same thing I did... literally completed the form within 1-2min. of it being posted. Arcadia Publishing (create those regional interest guidebooks nationwide) have the 'Nevada Test Site' among their offerings which supplemented my pre/post visit knowledge. I've also driven out to Project Faultless (about a dozen miles N on perfectly groomed/crowned 'Gov' road from US6 -> miles East from Tonopah, NV) <- check out the AtlasObscura website for details (many YT videos related). All a massive historical 'rabbit hole' of hold my beer and watch this cutting edge Engineering! The massive holes drilled for underground 'package' ignition (basically creating a large cavity which then falls in thus creating a crater... resulted in drilling technology later used for fracking.
