  • ( www.TFLcar.com ) Back in 1963 the boys at Chevrolet decided to go racing. And of course there was only one car that could possibly wave the race flag for GM and that was the Chevy Corvette. Overnight a legend was born. Part race car and part muscle car only 5 1963 Corvette Grand Sports were build but what an incredible combination of American muscle and European sportiness. The Corvette Grand Sport never really had a chance to prove itself as Chevrolet pulled the plug on the racing program almost right after it began but 5 legendary cars were built. Today Superformance is the only company in the world that can build a Corvette outside of Chevrolet. Check out this exclusive TFLcar video as we get to know the remade Corvette Grand Sport.

    I'm enjoying your classic car reviews! These cars are so out of the norm it makes you wonder how long a company like this can stay in business during this tough economy. Let's hope they NEVER resort to having to build a "genuine replica" Prius to pay the bills. Thanks for the fun video! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you very dedicated car guys and to your many knowledgeable viewers/subscribers!

    I am sure it registers as a new car, but with the engine they've chosen, that's not an issue. It's a modern, computer controlled engine/emission control package GM sells as a crate kit. That's the E-rod reference you see on the door of the car. It's basically the LSA engine from the Cadillac CTS-V, it goes about 550 Horsepower, and he's got the exhaust opened up a bit. As kit cars go, this is pretty sweet.

    • @BucketWheat
      @BucketWheat Před 6 lety

      GM has an entire line of Crate Engines in the "E-ROD" Program that are for car-builders who must, or at least want to, comply with California emissions standards! They are Complete engines including fuel injection system, and come complete with ECU's and wiring harness, Oxygen sensors, and such... and can be installed in "Hot Rods" and "Kit Cars" and even Vintage cars, or whatever you are building or 'fixing up', and it will pass Emissions in all 50 States...

    That car wasn’t raced that much in the 60’s because of the aero issues... at 140-150+ the front end created very dangerous levels of lift and that’s why Chevy pulled their sponsorship on that car.

    • @storyteller1749
      @storyteller1749 Před 4 lety +3

      Chevy killed its racing program before the Grand Sports were built. That's why Duntov built them in secret and only 5 were built. They never even raced as a Chevrolet sponsored car.

    I think the straps are beautiful. They add something from a bygone era, which help to makes it look aged and beautiful. I would also like them on the back, if only for looks.

    There were 5 coupes built. 2 were converted to roadsters by Duntov while still at GM. They were Chassis 1 and 2. Real C-2's weight about 3000 lbs. The Cobra it's competition at that time weighed in at 2000- 2200. That's why the GS was built. 125 were planned but only 5 were completed before the program was killed by GM. All were built with small blocks .

      @BucketWheat Před 6 lety

      {Laughing with you!} Certainly a bit ironic to be building "Americana" in South Africa !!
      BUT...what really matters is the End Product is 'Certified' Original basic design and IS as close to "Original as anyone is going to get!
      After all... GM and Ford build cars and trucks all over the World! GM builds more Buicks in China than in America! And Harley is now building motorcycles in India and bringing them to America to sell!!

      What you had was probably a replicar or or a kit car. There were only 5 real Grand Sports ever made in 1963. All 5 reside in the United States. And Superformance didn't start making their "continuation" Grand Sports until 2012. So what you had was either a "replicar" or kit car.

    I have a 1965 Corvette 327 that has seen better days. And I've been looking for a kit to convert the car, without any luck. So instead I going to convert it to a 60s style Gasser. It should be pretty cool. Eventually I will start uploading videos of my cars from my website musclecargarage. It's in the process of being updated.

    I'm not sure what this guy is talking about regarding the weight of the standard C-2 Sting Rays. He said something like 35/3600 lbs. They weren't that heavy. I had a '63 coupe and in showroom stock condition, only weighed 3030 lbs on the scale at the drag strip. I raced a '66 coupe in SC CA & IMSA at a weight of 2700 lbs.
    I've heard some of the C-4 & C-5 cars were a lot heavier.

    Well, is the car registered (for emissions) as a '63, or as a 2013? How is it regarded when you buy a replica/continuation of a fifty-year old marque? Thanks.

  • @petey2crazy
    @petey2crazy Před 11 lety +1

    I don't think emissions apply for kit cars. I could be wrong, but I've seen majority of kit cars carbureted with practically strait pipes.

    • @BucketWheat
      @BucketWheat Před 6 lety

      Each State is different... California, for example, is gradually pulling ALL cars into Emissions Regulations, and soon will be reaching out for motorcycles as well...and boat engines, and even off-road recreational vehicles...
      Other States will 'exempt' vehicles manufactured before a particular year, or if it is 10 years old or more...and Many States will also allow you to register a "Replica' or 'Reproduction' vehicle -- such as a '65 Cobra, or '34 Ford Coupe, or '69 Camaro, etc. -- based on the year of original production...
      So it is a Good Idea, if you are thinking of building or buying a car like the Corvette Grand Sport, to CHECK with the State DOT or Dept. of Motor Vehicles where You Live to find out BEFORE you buy or build! {Most States that will allow a privately built vehicle, will also Require a pretty thorough State Inspection and Certification before licensing...

    Sacrilege, it should have an naturally aspirated LS9 create engine with some trick bits. The LS9 was GM's salute to the old school GM engines.

    • @ducfandan1117
      @ducfandan1117 Před 6 lety +1

      James Young The LS9 is not naturally aspirated. That’s the supercharged engine from the C6 ZR1. Are you thinking of the LS7? That was the N/A 7-liter (427 ci) from the C6 Z06 and later the Gen 5 Camaro Z/28.

    • @BucketWheat
      @BucketWheat Před 6 lety

      IF YOU buy the 'rolling Car' ... then YOU decide What engine/trans YOU WANT! Put 1,000+ HP in it if you want! {Smile!}
      Those who want "Vintage" or "Old School" can still buy the Small Block V8 and put 4 Webers on a cross-ram intake, or a Fuel Injection system, or whatever ... when THEY BUY ONE...
      Otherwise, let each OWNER decide what THEY want to spend their money on, and DRIVE..!
      Just keep in mind, as you decide, if you want handling or straight acceleration... because the more engine -- and weight of turbos and fuel injectors, and dry sump systems, and all that 'plumbing'...Adds Weight over the front wheels!
