Jay Leno is so knowledgeable that he actually called the builder out on the fact that it was a dry sump motor! That's why I love and respect him...well, not the only reason. I respect the fact that he is very much the preservationist of automotive history.
The sound of that blue Vette firing up was just f'ing awesome.
Malcolm Tudor chills down the spine
Yep the sound is otherworldly
The blue ones do sound different 😂
I was grinning from ear to ear on the start sounds. Sexy car.
@@moiseslopez7898 b
That battery position dry sump burn was cold. Straight up.
I've owned my Superformance 427 Cobra since 2009 and can attest to how beautifully made these cars really are.
I love how Jay was not even interested in the red car, the red car is awesome, but jay is a purest and loved the blue car...I get it, that blue car is amazing.
2:05 ahauahuauhuah LOL "you hooked up through tinder what happened?!" omg luv it
The look on Jay's face when he correctly calls out the car as a dry sump setup. Only a true car guy would get such glee from that.
Wow! Jay, really knows his stuff. I especially love the way he unknowingly test builders on the knowledge of they're own cars. Keep it up.
Well, I'm 27 and I'm more excited about this than a Z07 :D
26:09 the startup sounds like a bomb going off!
Nailed it - Superformance nailed it.
What a sound when it starts up! :) Yes!
I like the sound of a real engine, and, I like to see Jay talking to another car guy that has as much enthusiasm and love for these cars as Jay does.
My god, that blue 63 is to die for
xUdieToox Would you please give my racing channel its 1300th Subscribe
Or to die in. Lol
Very nice cars. One of the most beautiful Vettes made
God Bless the South Africans of Duch decent who can appreciate American muscle cars. The cars look great. Keep up the good work guys.
Not many car vids on CZcams engage the subwoofer on my desk, but when that Corvette started up, my whole office started shaking! Badass car and some badass sound equipment recording the video!
These Superformance cars are Fantastic to drive. I drove one of their GT-40 models. I saw a recreation of this 1963 Grand Sport at Cars and Coffee in West Palm Beach FL on Sunday. The gentleman did a fantastic job with a big block fuel injected motor, 6 speed trans, disc brakes, roll bar, racing seats, belts and very nice carbon aero parts front and rear. He started it up for me and blew my socks off.. 600 HP in very light 2600 pound car.. !!! What kind of knee pads did they use to get a License to Build from GM???
I believe Chevrolet simply provided a couch pillow for them to use...
🤦♂️😂🤣
Corvette! American sports car. Enough said 🤠🇺🇸🏁🐎
I got goose bumps when Jay started that machine! Dang!
The C4 Corvette "Sledgehammer" that they mention had 890hp and went 254.6 and did it with no spoilers or wings but was lowered and held the top speed record for 25 yrs. The C4's have a very low .33 dc.
The Sledgehammer was built by Callaway for a German customer, but John Lingenfelter built the engine and drove the car on its record run. RIP, John, you were a master engine builder and brave driver.
The sound of that engine... perfect!
Jay is the channel kids should be watching, the history lessons are priceless.
I’m 14 and I watch jay everyday
that is engineering art right there... damn those are absolutely beatiful
I ordered one in March and should be getting it mid September.
and then I woke up
Hehehe funny stuff
My neighbor had their GT40 and Cobra. I'm trying to convince him that he needs one of these....
AlexCoronaPhoto Yes talk him into it .I have all three sitting in my toy cabinet I admire them every day .,😁
Zero Cool it’s not a mustang
Zero Cool no that's mustangs
The driving segment should have been filmed at a race track!
Loved the scene of the car leaving Jay's garage! 👍
I was thinking the same thing since all the original Grand Sports were race cars. Making these into street cars makes this model more of a resto mod than a recreation of the original. Wonder what Zora would have thought about putting back in an interior and dynamat and going back to rubber bushings? The cars also look way too high off the ground.
@LiveOkie I've seen Jay get on it a few times. Saw him get pulled over once, too. California is a police state. Cops everywhere. It's uncanny. A quick 5-second acceleration and you're to 85-90, CHP lights you up, and it's a $1500 fine. You've REALLY gotta pick your moments.
Jay is the coolest car guy of them all.
My desk vibrated when they fired it up at 26:10. LOL
I'm a Ford guy, but that sounded absolutely awesome in my headphones. :D
31:00 Jay lays down Truth! Totally agree. Love that GS corvette, he drove the one i wanted haha!
I nearly passed out when they fired that car up. Ohhhh myyyyy...
Never tire of Jay Leno
I have the original video given to me by Doug Hooper who was a famous Corvette driver/ builder and owned a shop in North Hollywood back in the 90's and restored the orig. Penske roadster that weighed only 1960 lbs.....the video shows the complete restoration of the car and has footage of them campaigning the car in the vintage series of that day and they took first place if I remember correctly. These cars during there first campaign at Nassau in 1963 beat the Cobras by 11 seconds a lap !! That is why the next yr. in 1964, Shelby showed up with a "Lighter Weight" Cobra that only weighed 1600 lbs. and it had a 390 that was so over built that it failed during the race, but was giving the Grand Sport a hard time. It is called the "Turd, or the "Flip Top". Penske beat that car driving his G.S. during practice but in the race, the Cobra got away and it took him awhile to catch him, but unfortunately that is when the Cobra failed. I wish they had built this replica to the same weight as the originals....it won't perform the same way ….it's too heavy. There are some orig. weight replica cars being campaigned in vintage racing that you can see right here on CZcams and they are cleaning up...even passing the GT40's. You can buy the book "Grand Sport Corvette" with photo's taken back in the day by the Shelby photographer, "Dave Freidman" and he saw it all and can attest to the stories about this car. If Chevrolet would have gotten involved, I believe the Cobras and Corvette's would have gotten lighter and lighter...we might have seen cars as light as 1500 lbs...….amazing.
When you have so many cool cars of your own, you pick the slower car to test, and even though you are offered a chance to drive both, you don't........Jay Legend
That just shows how authentic Jay's interests truly are. He's got plenty of faster, lighter cars - that ain't no big deal. What was different about this one was Jay looked like he was imagining he was some one.... maybe from a movie or a race car driver... notice he got this distant almost aristocratic look on his face when he is first driving it? And he doesn't want to talk to the other guy initially. SOMETHING interesting was going on in Jay's imagination.
I'm in love with those cars.
man...loves these corvettes. love 60's racing aggressive styling!
That start up!
Hell yeah! This was sooo awesome! Whish I could afford such a great car. Imagine this happens on a Sunday morning in your Garage, when you want to take this Beauty for a drive. Immediatly you are happy^^
I skipped past that part, but went back because of your comment. Was NOT disappointed!!
My pants got a little tighter!
damn thunderstorm!
I was about to post: 26:10 That sound! ahhhhh
Tinder reference right over their heads! Lol 😂
When Ken Lingenfelter says they have a twin turbo engine putting out 1,500 HP, but they won't deliver a car with that kind of horsepower I can hear the check books opening and guys saying, "You want to bet?".
J Smith when John lingenfelter passed away lingenfelter got soft. Ken isn't nearly a big of car guy as John.
Tony Bischoff kinda surprised at this level of candor on this open of a forum with that screen name.
Alan Hill how come? What did they say? Didn’t seem THAT offensive or uncalled for imho
Doubt it’s the engine builder Tony Bischoff.
@Mark X *"Exactly Ken's plan, how do you make -rich- people want something?
Tell them they can't have it 😜"*
Fixed that for ya :P
Gawd, I love that engine sound. Heaven. I want one so bad.
I have owned a Superformance Cobra for 13 years. Lance is a great guy, and his company puts out an incredible product. I have seen these Grand Sports in person, and they continue the great quality Superformance is known for.
As a lifelong Ford lover, Grand Sports are one of my favorite cars, based on looks alone.
I’m so glad you left the tonight show and did this, I love these videos so much! Thank you Jay for letting me get a look into a world that I can only dream of.....or through Gran Turismo...lol
Jay you are a treasure. Thank you for sharing your passion.
I love this. I like Shelby Cobras but these are so much better! I'd kill to have one.
i love the way jay always seems to know more about the cars than the people that put there name on
Weird but the guy from Superformance seems to know a lot less about his cars or about Corvettes in general than you would think. I've heard him kinda iffy in other videos as well.
@@sidefx996 Buyers can do their own research pretty easy in this day and age. It's a replica, not rocket science.
Jay was so proud of that tinder joke...Lol
Tinder!
Tinder ?
eh..I guess that's just proof that I've never used it Lol
No one else was laughing in the garage.
@@SuperNevile No one else got it.
Sweet, got my dad's 66 Corvette but restoration is a long process. Always loved the C2!
Funny that they brought the blue vette as a backup, that's the one I'd have picked too. Great automotive history lesson
I know it’s just another comment, but you are an amazing creator Mr. Leno, thank you for all of the years of entertainment.
I love the stance of this car, beautiful!!! I saw it in person at the Good-guys show at Del Mar.👍🏼👍🏼.....wish i owned one i would drive the...........
I don't care what kind of fanboy you might be. This is pure and proper.
Jay needs to buy one.. The craftsmanship that went into that ..
JUST WOW !!
Key word on this episode: perseverance. Persist, try, persist, try. Proper job, from proper blokes.
Each time I hear a South African accent, this movie quote always comes to mind ...."...Diplomatic Immunity" ! 🤣
Michael B “it’s just been revoked.”
It really was a bad attempt at an accept though, for the most accurate foreign take on the South African accent, go look at Thomas Jane in Stander.
Facking prawns....
I always think of the bad guys in Lethal Weapon 2.
@@garybloom7445 great movie and what a story. Lived in Jhb at the time.
the Original Grand Sport is my ultimate dream car.. it has that feel that captures your and make it skip a beat when you see one.. I would love to own one of these. and I am happy to hear that this company Superformance will build to suit.. which is awesome as I know you cannot reproduce the exact car.. but if I had my way it would be dark gun metal grey with black stripe with orange stripe.. of course the engine I would probably go with the one in the blue one Jay was driving.. but I am open to a possible Twin Turbo that was in the Sledgehammer. another car that makes my heart skips.. thank you for sharing
The paint jobs on both cars are amazing.
Easily the single greatest yet underrated cars ever. Not even Ferrari could hold a candle to it
Hammer Smith looooool
Misaki at the time it was originally built (the original 6), that was basically correct.
These cars will be significant long after we're gone. They're built under license. It's no different than the cobras. However repros won't be as valuable. But that doesn't negate my OP
Works of art, absolute beauties. Thanks for sharing Jay!
I’m 22 now. Hopefully with in the next 10 years Superformance will still be making cars when I have enough money to own one. Adding this to the list of dream cars for sure.

I remember back in the '70s, just about every Corvette show you went to there would be "some guy, who had a cousin, that knew a guy" that had one of the original Grand Sports. We used to say, "GM built five Grand Sports and we know where all 16 of them are now."
Except that GM never built them in the first place
@@psk1w1 GM did build them tho it was all gm work
These are gorgeous... They look like vintage slot cars!! Thank you as always Jay.
The sound this thing makes. Wow!! Love it!
It's nice to see another Lance, that's my name as well. It's actually rare. I've only met 6 in my life and I'm 54. The car is beautiful and l remember reading about them when I was a kid.
Mr. Jay at 28, there is no feeling or comparison like being in an old muscle car. One with nature is how I feel? OG!
now thats a saffa to make us proud to say we are south african. best quality , best people , widely recognized as the best cobras , cobra coupes/daytona , gt40 continuations and a handful other cars .
This episode was fantastic. Really cool guys too.
One of the best looking sports cars I’ve even seen.
One of my favorite Corvettes sadly never to be seen in the UK roads what a great looking Car
I thought the 427 Cobra was the sexiest Car on the Planet until I saw these Vette's! 😍
@GregoCatal No matter the allegiance to deny the FE 427's credibility as a factory built race engine is simply refusal to face facts. Ford's efforts were commendable as a U.S. corporation and auto builder.
I love hearing their stories... Great episode, Jay!

When the old timers are gone all we have is the videos, that's it, when the Great Zora duntov past there wasn't much fanfare , the same with Carol Shelby not much fanfare, that's sad.
A history lesson never knew about these cars enjoyable to see such creative artists create beautiful masterpieces
Production car or not, that's a Dream mobile! I would love to see a modern version of one of these in the world racing circuits
Lots of comments about the volume. I think it's good. Lots of people aren't used to low compression audio.
Best DAMN episode ever! Legends as far as the eyes can see.
I know....when you have a car with an ligenfelter engine and the owner of the company in your shop....you know you've made it.
I'm not a car guy by a long shot and even I know that name......to me, it's just a small step behind Shelby.
Late night TV is disgusting without Jay Leno !
Jay's comment, "This is quite flickable isn't it?" & the guys subtle "Ya ya ya" was really a "don't even try it" lol
I've always loved the Corvette Grand Sports, (very rare). And for those of us who'd love to have a good recreation/factory spec version. This one would fit the bill quite nicely!
What a cool car, love the way it sits and the way it sounds
In a word, EXCELLENT.
Gorgeous cars! Well done, Superformance.
Nice builds, well executed. Looks like what I was at Laguna back in the day :D
Next up, some Chaparal's ...
omg I haven't heard that word in DECADES Chaparal....damn......you must be in your 60's????
"kids were getting killed, whatever" - Jay Leno 2018
(7:38)
Its the racing spirit. Its a shame, but it is what it is. Unfortunately thats part of it.
If you knew the history of auto racing you would understand. It was not a sport for cowards.
Keep your kids at home when there's a race.
The guy was dying for Jay to pick the red one! 🤣
"How did you guys meet, through Tinder?" It looks like that joke just flew right over their heads.
I wish you would have driven the other one as well
☝🏼
David Watson yes, would’ve been cool if Jay drove the blue one with Ken and the Red one with Lance. Have the cars driving together then have Jay switch to the other car half way through the drive.
It would've been nice to see/hear both in action. I am sure the production takes a goodly amount of time (particularly for a weekly "show"), so I understand picking one, but weighing the feel and drivability of both would've been nice. I know I would watch an extra episode or add-on driving short of the other. Both are fine cars, I'm sure.
To answer the "would young people get excited over this over something new" I'm 14 and I this this thing fricking kills a Ferrari or mclaren on any new thing! This is 🔥
There is elegance in simplicity. Yes, those are technological marvels but with all the nanny gadgets you lose something.....as Jay says "visceral"
Man...If I had the money I would buy one of those for sure!!!! What an amazing vehicle!
What a bewdy.
Thanks, Jay and the crew for bringing these beaut gems out for all to see.
Perfectly made video. Am not a specialist, but it is cut so nicely.
Another fine episode! You can tell these guys are passionate about their work. They're also personable & don't mind being corrected, "you're right Jay, you got me!"
:-). Way to preserve the Corvette racing legend!
The blue corvette is BAAAADDDD! BEAUTIFUL!
Love that interior, they did a wonderful job on it.
Thank you Jay and company! I enjoy every episode!
Remember when Jay used to see if the feature car was able to do a burnout 🚗💨💨💨💨 💨.
This video is from an episode of Jay's current NBC TV show. NBC does not allow the depiction of anything illegal like a burnout. I'm sure he probably did a burnout. It is just not included in the public footage.
Tracer Loenan What's illegal in a burnout? If I recall he did them in front of his own garage.
renyn21 Interpreted by most as “reckless driving”.

I was just at the Simeone museum this afternoon admiring one of the original 5! Amazing.
2 out of original 5, your lucky day.
14:30 You can see Jay fighting back the urge to say "Na na na na naaaaa na" and tried to appear like he was not gloating when he turned out to be right about that "dry sump".
Damn that blue one is beautiful! 🤘🏻😎
Another gorgeous car on Jay Leno's Garage! Thanks for sharing Jay That was awesome! 👍
If I could afford one I would want a split window with pop up headlights cause that's what it made me love them
Yes. But sadly they weren't made that way and they didn't have rotating lights too heavy or split rear window obscured vision and zduntov HATED IT anyhow.
Think the correct car for you would be a 63 split window coupe. Basecamp 327 w powerglide. Air conditioning power steering and brakes.

Simply stunning...Thank you for building these beauties!
