As for tekken dude’s take aways on generational differences between gamer cultures. “yes by NO but kinda maybe sorta yes”
It’s relevant and pointed social commentary if you can cut through the “ I had to suffer so you should too true l33t alpha gamer edge lord” vibes. No for real he makes a solid observation, people are like this, but it isn’t regulated to millennials or digital environments.
If you look at our world, it’s actually those who were definitive “winners” of past generations who decided after themselves there just isn’t room for any else to win, only serve as hopeless wage/ debt slaves.
Tried Geforce Now Cloud and it's dogshit, i guess it's nice there is options but very undercooked and underwhelming as service.

I haven’t preordered a game in over ten years, and I haven’t had any issues picking up a game day one. There is no reason to preorder ever.
The thing is the bonus that's included in preorders is always so dogshit i wonder why people even bother.
Same with the "collectors" physical editions where you get some cheap ass plastic thing that you put on a shelf somewhere and never touch it again.
The whole point of pre ordering used to be so that if you went to the store they'd hold onto a physical copy for you in case they sold out. Now that most games are bought and sold digitally there's just no incentive to preorder aside from getting a few cosmetics that usually look out of place in-game and will probably be made available to everyone within a year. It's so stupid to pre order games when there's no scarcity.
I mean I preorder based on pedigree per say, like from soft games. Except destiny I preorder because I'm an addict in an abusive relationship
Omg Micromachines, no way. That pool table map drove me insane as a kid.

man that great Mad Max game is so often forgotten about 😗
I love that game! I’d kill for a sequel
The story's kinda bad though, but otherwise absolutely great
Mad Max was a game I wrote off, because I have suffered through more than enough Movie-tie-in-Games in my life, but after a friend let me try their copy for a while, I was hooked like the raiders who thought they stood a chance against Max.
This game, Terminator Resistance and RoboCop Rogue City, have made me want to give that type of game a chance, although only after reviews have come out. Especially because last year also gave us Gollum, King Kong and that Walking Dead game, all of which weren't even worth being pirated IMO.
@@T-Bone_SSteakyeah that ending/conclusion is garbage, everything up to that point was an 8/10
"Great"......really? You thought Mad Max videogame was great? 🤨
Good stuff on getting the Destiny reveal in this week’s episode! Very impressive to have time to cover it that close to releasing the video!
The PlayStation tier nomenclature can be confusing, but Dave the Diver will be on "Extra," not just "premium." You scared me for a minute when you said premium.
Thanks for clearing that up, now I know I can play it! 😃
This is what I came here to check, thanks
Regarding losing in multiplayer games. I actually enjoy Street Fighter 6 because I don't have a team. I don't have to worry that I will dissapoint anyone but myself (although on rare occasion I worry about dissapointing my opponent xD). I do enjoy co-op games though but I mostly play them on difficulties I'm comfortable with.
I only play multiplayer or co-op with my son…because he knows exactly what he’s getting into so he can’t be too disapointed.
Also these are two Japanese developers, there maybe a lot of reference to Japanese culture in between the lines there too.
Japanese social interactions, corporate lifestyle, japanese population and employment markets have changed a lot over the generations, there generation had to be competitive and they were educated to be that way.
Japanese hobby culture has been very much for a long time had been tailored to the concept of "parallel play" where individuals will play together... but won't interact on any level, like no socialising, that a hobby is enjoyed in utter respectful silence, just you and the game.
aye but what's your age? That's the important part of that whole thing.
@@boxhead6177 No. It's definitely more than just a Japan thing.... I play Rocket League (EU) which is full of toxic little kids that blame everyone but themselves when they lose. Even if I am the top player on our team with most points, scoring goals and saving shots, somehow it's still my fault that we lost, despite the kids complaining doing barely anything useful the entire match.... passing it to the opponents who line up a perfect shot but sure it's _my_ fault for not reacting to the save in time. Sure. The most vocal tend to be the lowest scoring most useless team mates too.
@@SA80TAGE I agree, toxic gaming personally type at this point is universal... but I am more referring to there past generation being more competitive and gaming was more isolative in Japan society, so that comparison to them seems more clearer to them than say Skillup thought it sounded. Japan's gaming culture has changed a lot.
The price of Star Wars Outlaws is insane. If you buy the "Standard" edition, you don't get a mission. HARD PASS.
I also dislike locking content behind a preorder tier, but it’s one mission. I don’t think ubisofts stupid pricing model excluding a single mission devalues the game to the point of the base game not being worth getting, but that’s me.

Defninetly not me sitting here googling "Cyberpunk a distant dream" thinking that was the title of the sequel and i missed the announcement.........then realizing it was a turn of phrase lol.
Hey Skill Up, speaking of game preservation, it might be newsworthy to talk about the StopKillingGames initiative, which seeks to hold publishers to account for letting online multiplayer games die. They're planning on petitioning multiple governments and maybe even legal action.
yess it is incredibly important they need to spread the word
Yeah, it was disheartening to not see it mentioned.
Don't get your hopes up, probably will stay "as neutral as possible" regarding what happens in gaming outside of the games itself

I feel like people are too focused on calling it "The Witcher 4". I think, the fact that CDPR hasn't called it that makes it clear that it's probably something in the universe, but something on its own right. I would love to see that they try these Dragon Age esque backstories again, just with more focus this time around so the choice gives you a reason to replay it. Also what exactly are you supposed to answer to a question what you think fo AAAA games really?
Which makes sense since 3 was quite the send-off for Geralt. Maybe this one will star Ciri, you could do fun things with that.
@@YesnomuI wouldn't be surprised. Seems like there's a snow theme, doesn't she get sent to a snow dimension in one of the possible endings? Maybe this is just going to be Witcher Skyrim in a cold region, or an alternate timeline where we fail to prevent the coldpocalypse.

I think there's a minor editing error at the beginning of the children of the sun segment where it's showing the wrong footage but nothing massive
Tekken guy has a point but saying it's generational is BS. IRL team sports have always had more participants than individual sports.
I agree, and I think there's another factor in that prior to good functional team-based multiplayer (we're talking pre-Halo here), it tended to be single player vs single player simply because multi was an option in single player games instead of its own thing. Then the games kept developing along with broadband roll-outs and other technological advances that improved lag and all those other thousands of tiny improvements, blah blah blah and here we are today with contemporary games and player preferences. So when he perceives a shift from single to team he's not wrong, but I do think his posited reasons why are rather skewed by "damn kids these days".
@@brianhanna3128 Well said.
Some PlayStation corrections: Dave the Diver and Zau are for PS+ Extra, the tier between Essential and Premium. Premium also gets them of course. Notably Dave the Diver is *also* a day 1 release - it hasn't been on PlayStation before.
Also MotorStorm RC was a pretty sweet Vita game based on Micro Machines that got a forgotten PS3 port. There are also a *ton* of Flash games in that genre if you really want to look for more.
Great to know! I was shocked when he said Dave the Diver was on the premium tier, as I thought that was only for the classics catalogue and demos

About Harada's quote, the part about generations is a bunch of crap, but what he's saying about being able to blame your teammates isn't a new revelation, it's a sentiment that has been discussed to death over the last decade in the FGC, RTS and Arena Shooter communities. I've seen the idea talked about in the Dota 2 subreddit as well, and people generally seemed to agree.
Not just the last ten years. I've been in variants of that discussion since the late nineties. Basically since the internet first enabled team based games now that I think of it.
Never heard it pulled back to 50+ before though, but then Japan's gaming culture is a beast all it's own. You can get beat to bits by middle aged jobbers in the arcades after hours daily there still. Something that just isn't true in the rest of the world by and large.
It's absolutely true that classic 1v1 fighting games really confront you with your own limitations in ways few other games can.
Sidenote: Harada always loves to stir the pot a bit too.
Also, gamers always find a way to blame something that isn't themselves, doesn't matter if single- or multiplayer. Lag, unfair matchmaking, a distraction in the real world etc...
@@jemandetwas1 Also, -gamers- *People always find a way to blame something that isn't themselves, doesn't matter if single- or multiplayer. Lag, unfair matchmaking, a distraction in the real world etc...
The generational difference is maybe real, but I don't think it has much to do with society. Just the games people have grown up with and how they play them. I think skill-based match-making and team games would have been just as revolutionary in the 90s if they had been seriously explored. But at the time even the idea of making an account or profile for a game would have seemed excessive.
The generations part is true too gen Z just won't admit they're soft.
Got some major Forspoken vibes from Outlaws
I thought the same thing.
I just killed hype, with my freaking mind!

It didn’t feel cringe like forspoken but it did feel really bland and generic
There's nothing even remotely like Forspoken. It seems like a very standard Ubisoft game. Forspoken had typical jrpg writing.

30 FPS caps on "next gen" titles is ridiculous. This is supposed to be the most powerful generation.
Every generation is the most powerful
They have to be capped at 30 fps so they can still say the game plays at 4k.
yes depending on what the game is doing, you cant just expect every game to have 60fps
Btw the current Gen console systems have the equivalent processing power of like a gtx3060ti-3070, so last Gen mid range graphics cards. Dont expect to much out of them.

Omg Micro Machines! I used to play that with my brothers on Sega Megadrive (I'm from the UK). It was the only game we had that was 4 player and the cartridge had 2 extra ports on it for controllers. Still, I used to pretend it was plugged in for my youngest brother (standard) because he wasn't very good and held up the gameplay too much. He is now in his mid-twenties and last week he told me he always knew it was unplugged. I felt so bad, but it had to be done.
I had never thought about the "can blame others for loss, yet take credit for victory" dynamic before, but it certainly strikes me as true. I just don't think it's a sentiment cabled to "young people." My man in his 50s didn't play team-based-MOBA-responsibility-without-accountability shooters when he was a kid because there were no games like that when he was a kid. Multiplayer was like your remembrance of Micro Machines "win or relinquish the controller." When you had friends over losing meant you didn't get to play anymore. I think that's the generational difference.
Course, I say that as a Dad. I've been playing Tekken 6 with my boys (8 & 11) and when I beat them (just barely, it won't be long now before these urchins topple me), and they have to give up the controller to their brother, you can, like, see the pain on their wee faces. They're not used to it. I love it so much. :)

It’s a good day when “This Week in Video Games” drops, and it’s my bday. I am at peace.
I’m late but HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY 🎉
Harada's right that one of the reasons people gravitate away from fighting games is because of that "no one to blame" aspect but it's not an age thing. You can look to physical sports and easily see that the team based sports are far and away more popular than one-on-one sports. For a game example, digital card games have been mega popular since Hearthstone came out a decade ago, and MTG and Yu-Gi-Oh before that.
People gravitate towards whatever is most accessible. It just so happens that all of the ultra popular games are free-to-play team games. It's nothing to do with age.
This is the only channel that I have notifications on for. The quality of this week in video games, the reviews, and FPS are supberb! Keep up the good work boys🎉
I don’t know about that team based vs one on one stuff. Plenty of people will find all kinds of things to shift the blame to when they get creamed in a one on one situation. “Lag!”, “My controller is shit!”, “You use the cheapest easy no brain strats!”. Kinda just feels like “Old man yells at clouds” kinda deal.
@@therotten6152 The problem is the "people these days" thing. This has literally been a thing since humans have been around. The only thing that's changed is how many people can hear the whining/excuses, not how many people are making them.
but in team games people blame the team, they don't blame the other team as much. they 100% think it's the teams fault. if you played league or dota you'd see many players who think they're stuck in trench or get forced 50% loss rate - these players don't really exist in 1v1 fighting games.
About the point (Later in the video) about younger people avoiding 1v1 games and instead choosing team based games is a thing. People don't talk specifically about it but I've heard comments about games like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat about being "intimidating" and that "feels really bad to lose on those games".
So yeah ... the thing about blaming mistakes on other teammates is a thing, but I wouldn't say that younger are guilty of that, more like is human nature, you see that in sports always so is not surprising to see it in games also.
On that last point, I think gamers just enjoy team bass games because it’s more social, I think overwatch is a good example, some players actually like to cooperate, also there’s literally no shortage of gamers who want to challenge there’s millions of people playing fighting games even more than before
Biggest announcement for me was Gigantic releasing again after all those years. Disappointed to not see it mentioned again.

I feel as if he reason we tend to see more cooperative based competition in gaming is a shift in hardware and perspective. The technology wasn't as capable at delivering the complexities many esport titles offer today, and as the technology for cooperation has been advanced, more people than ever are able to play with friends or even make friends through video games.

While I do kind of agree with what Harada says, I think back to
The 80/20 rule when I was playing League of Legends.
The idea is that 80% of games are out of your control, because you only affect 20% of the game (you vs your opponent, or 2 people, in a game of 10 players). So while 40% wins would happen whether you played well or not, but going from 40% to 60% won rate was on you as a player.
19:00 Skald is also coming to GOG, not only Steam.
Praising yourself and blaming environment isn't just modern, but rather common human behavior. It just took some time for developers to capitalize on this with multi-player games.
Dunno if it's a generational thing, but fighting games and other 1v1 genres being less popular than MOBA/teamgames partially since you need to accept responsibility for losses is something I very much agree with. Hard pill to swallow perhaps, but very true.

@@IAmTheBugInsideYou 2nd and 3rd place aren't really participation trophies, they are kind of important for layered competitions where they would be the substitutes in case something happened to the winners when going up a tier to the next competition. These days it's just to show who was closest to winning, which could help direct efforts for improvement from people who want to invest in the competition or even to see gaps. I honestly don't buy this "cinematic experience" as an explanation for 30fps as well...
...but in this case he could also refer to the fact that 30fps made it possible to push the visuals to a cinematic quality level while in gameplay.
I honestly can't believe that at this point game-devs (or even most marketing) in gaming would still use the 30fps is more cinematic line. If anything, a game get's more cinematic with a lot of post-processing effects (which Hellblade does seem to use a lot) which includes Motion Blur and that makes 30fps more bearable (yes, I know many gamers hate motion-blur but if implemented well I actually think it can add to a cinematic experience and especially help with lower fps)
Nobody watches films above 24fps and post processing from tvs make movies look weird. I get why Hellblasw is doing it.
@@DV-ou1yu The 24fps movie line is however exactly what I said is what I don't like (and what has been used in the past unfortunately).
24fps in recorded media is very different to 24fps in computer-generated, because 24fps recorded is never simply 24 pictures per second. It is 24 pictures over a second (that means you always have some blur because of how light penetrates the sensor over time)
9:56 I hate to be the um actually guy, but the Scorn were not reskins of the Fallen. Although they are undead Fallen, the Scorn fight and play differently
Ralph is the only person that makes me excited for Destiny again. His excitement is contagious.
Some extra news: Kickstarter backers of Eiyuden Chronicle are supposed to get digital keys some time this week, so expect to see some more early gameplay popping up.
Heck yeah Skald getting a shout out 🎉🎉🎉🎉
"30fps CAP for cinematic experience" Also known as "We couldn't optimize our game well enough to make it playable at 60fps on consoles"
When they drop that line it makes it feel like the company think's we're idiots, which makes me less willing to purchase their game. If they just said "Yeah, the game looks fucking incredible, but for consoles we had to cap it at 30fps to keep those graphics" I'd have more respect for them.
FACTS😂
@@toptiertech7291 I mean people are used to 24fps movies so it's not completely baseless, but considering it's supposed to be a video game first, sacrificing the gameplay part of the experience just to make cutscenes more cinematic does seem counter intuitive
I dont think its an optimization issue with the first game in mind. They push graphical fidelity and sound design etc pretty far and tbh consoles are kinda weak sauce.
Harada is right that Fighting Games do put more pressure on individual performance, and that the lack of this pressure is part of the reason many people prefer team-based games. He's wrong about the generational part of it. The reason team-based games weren't more popular in Harada's youth has nothing to do with generational attitudes toward winning and losing, it's due to the fact that the internet wasn't developed enough at the time to make team-based games viable. For a one-on-one game it becomes much easier to organize matches or tournaments in person. If you wanted to play Street Fighter you could go down to an arcade and have a pretty good chance of finding a single person to play with, and you could both play on the same arcade machine, no need for a network. Team games don't really lend themselves well to arcade play, so without the internet they were not really possible.
Idk Ralph I thought the outlaws story looked super generic and some of those lines were pretty rough. The main characters face looks off too. Definitely in the uncanny valley. Maybe I’ll be wrong though.
Kinda sad you didn't talk about Accursed Farm's Ross' efforts on video game preservation, we need all the help we can get and it would've been nice to see you signal boost it.
Why do the animations model outlaws reminded me of mass effect Andromeda???
Playing through gears 5 campaign for the first time on a whim this week. Loving it! Excited to see 6 should be announced soon!
Regarding the Hirata/Yoshida: obviously the reason why team sports are more popular are because it includes more of your friend group and just allows players to cooperate. Also i feel like team sports in games and irl have always been more popular generally but idk how to calculate that. Either way, that doesn't mean that he is wrong on why, but its also other reasons more so.
Ralph! Shine some light on Ross Scott's StopKillingGames campaign. You forgot to mention it last week too. It's incredibly important and needs to be talked about.
Optimization in this generation!? MADNESS!
@SkillUp could you please include the links to all the articles mentioned in the video?
Finally 1million Subs congrats ❤
Ah so Austin was originally set to review dragons dogma, two weeks ago they said the review was basically finished….now skill up is playing it? I guess he didn’t like Austin’s take and decided to play/review it himself?
Austin did hype it up like it's an all time RPG, which it simply isn't with all the issues it has
@@charliem5604 Yeah, it didn't really improve on the first game in that many ways while keeping pretty much all of the flaws plus the performance issues. With that being said I'm 48hrs in and still having a good time with it, but it'll have to be a pretty disappointing year for this to win GOTY.
@@lukew6725 I enjoyed it myself for about 70 hours, but I couldn't be bothered to finish it. Meanwhile on elden ring I have 550 hours and I still don't get bored
30fps cap in 2024 is WILD
Not really
people seeing those hellbalde 2 trailers and thinking that it would run 60 on consoles is wild.
Good stuff Ralph, as always. Here's some engagement for the algorithm.
I think fighting games hit their peak because in the super hit SF2 era, there were dozens of them coming out and they reiterated and built upon each other so much that they hit basically perfect mode around the time of say, Street Fighter Alpha 2. You can have your personal favorite of the era, Mortal Kombat, Primal Rage, Killer Instinct, Darkstalkers, Clay Fighter, Virtua Fighter, Tekken, Samurai Showdown, KoF, Marvel vs. Capcom etc... but they basically hit the limits for what character variety , movesets, roster size can reasonably be in a strict 1 on 1 fighter on a 2D plane that has fireballs in it. (And fighting games in 3D are an entirely different style of game.)
You can update the graphics or simplify the controls or add a new gimmick but *after* that point the games started catering more and more to the people that were already into the genre, with more complex and powerful ultra moves, teams of characters and switching, etc, and it got more complicated, and the rosters got bigger, and it just became impossible for a new player to try and get into the things, they're too overwhelming. A
And then they stagnated. Street Fighter 3 came out and put in a new system that casual players didn't like and didn't include many of the favorite characters, and Street Fighter 4 wouldn't come for a decade. The market was oversaturated with fighters and so it just sort of... died out. Some of the franchises like KoF or Mortal Kombat would keep putting out semi-annual releases but that's mostly for people already a fan of those.
New players don't want to put in the investment to learn all the combos and inputs, and veterans just care about the franchise they already loved. Dragonball FighterZ aside, and even that mostly gained traction due to the crazy visuals, but I don't know anyone that's stayed enthused for the many many updates to it.
Give me Virtua Fighter 6 or Darkstalkers 4 and I'll be up for trying, but I just can't be made to care about Tekken at this point.
Austin enjoys everything
Truth
Yeah I've started skipping his reviews, theyre coming across as very IGN, "everything that's new and shiny is great" can't really think of many times he's really dunked on something unless it's overwhelmingly seen as bad by the general public
what harada said is true in my observation of the local gaming scene. players are easily more demoralized if they lost truly on their own merit hell i can give the same argument when talking TCG
yes in 1v1 it's difficult to not feel defeated. whereas team players treat it more like toss coin gambling, that's why a lot of league and dota players will hop into another game after losing thinking they'll get the win they deserve. it's rare to see that psychology in 1v1 games unless they're highly chance based.
@@JewTube001 the problem to me is that finding an opponent of similar skill level in fighting games online is almost nigh impossible especially if we are talking old games like SF3 3rd strike, hell even new game with new system like SF6 and Tekken 8 will have legacy players who are leagues ahead if they come from another fighting game even if they are not good in fighting games since as long as you have a basic sense of footsies and other basic things in a regular fighting game you're leagues ahead of people.
the solution? more team vs team tournaments or team vs team mode in fighting games, not a catch all solution but can give more leeway
How does that botany game or planet of Lana get a mention but you fail to mention that GIGANTIC IS BACK AND LAUNCHED EARLIER THIS WEEK?!
He mentioned it last week
pretty sure he already talked about it
@@GhostUpThere aye man he needs to bang it across everyone’s head lol jp but I just don’t wanna see another game die out cuz ppl got hearded to idk botany master or tractor simulator or somethng . 29:00- “Young people blame each-other for failure”
Psych student here: while I don’t know if it’s more prevalent in one generation or another, this does reflect the core principle of the “Self-Serving Bias”. This phenomenon is common amongst *everybody*, and refers to the fact that we attribute success to ourselves and failure to others or circumstances outside of our control.
Psychology student, you're wasting your time you can't and won't help anyone ever. It's not real science.
