Ralph are you allowed to upload a review? I thought the world wide release isn't until the 10th
@@Stuy777 Allowed isnt the right word, is it right?

Skill Up I just happen to get paid early this week on Thursday as I’m off over the Easter weekend, it must be fate.
"You can just listen to this video as you would a podcast" would've been the perfect spot to talk about your sponsor
10/10 for the music in the whole game. I would travel anywhere in Australia if there is a FF7R concert to hear it live.
**Spots a poisonous spider**
"Why do i hear boss fight music?"
**Sephiroth OST intensifies as the spider jumps at you**
True. The music in this game alone justifies the price of the game. That's also why I've paid another $100 for the limited Soundtrack. ^^ And I certainly would also love to visit a FF7re live concert - in my country or one nearby. Make it happen SE! :)
Loved all the music! Also the game was amazing just got the plat 🥰🔥
About the music, which version of Those Who Fight plays from 1:03 to 1:13? Thank you.
Speaking of audio, if there are any Breaking Bad fans here, considering the actor that played Badger voiced Wedge in the game, did anyone else have the issue of only hearing Badger talking to Pinkman whenever Wedge mentioned Jessie’s name in a sentence? I couldn’t unhear it. Amazing game though and the voice acting, audio, and music really are top knotch.
Barret sounds like the dude playing a dude disguised as another dude.
Love your Tropic Thunder reference.
And it was perfect

I see what you did there. I'll round you up with a 5100 gil minimum by that point. 😉

Sounds like legendary puff-puff mischief to me.
How to understand the madam scene? How adult is this game? Do I see what I'am paying for or do I have to get a fanfic/microtransaction/dlc ?

So being lied to is all you need to hear.
Im surprised he barely touched the absolutely incredible music and sound design of this game in this review
Yep. I would often just stand around soaking in the music and ambience of the world
Watch acg for a more technical review rather than a narrative review. Both are awesome imo
Yeah I thought the same thing, how do you review FFVII and somehow ignore reviewing what is arguably the best part of the game, the soundtrack
It's 2020 bro... why settle for one waifu? Have a harem of women, two gay men, along with 250 tigers.

Why are you s concerned about his opinion?
@@megaham1552 I've found SkillUp's opinion to usually be very much like my own. Granted, his opinion doesn't shape mine, but it's always reassuring to hear from someone who's like-minded in that you know for the most part that if there's something you do or don't enjoy, you're likely to have the same manner of praise or problems with it. I also find him to be a reliable reviewer who brings fair points to the table with reasoning behind what he's saying instead of basing opinions on nostalgia or with rose-tinted glasses on (for the most part).

Same. It all got amazing reviews so far. Many fans loving it
IGN reviewed too but they are the twin of rottentomatoes 😂
The checks cleared as well. The praise they give this game while justifying the fact its not actually a remake is telling.
Honestly, the fact that it's pretty linear is just obvious. That's hoe Midgar originally, and there's only so much you could do to pan that out. The game only opens up once you leave Midgar
There's rumors the next installment is more open world
@Sterman99 How much Tw3 did you even play? Must not have been a lot cause Tw3 is the opposite of boring imo.
Sterman99 damn, you described my worst fears about Witcher 3. Open world games are super tricky to nail I feel. If we’re being negative here, you can get big world that feels empty to great environments that feel alive but lacking in gameplay. Fallout 3 and New Vegas are the only ones I remember, where it was great in both gameplay and open world
Sterman99 bruh... did you just say botw had a better open world than the Witcher lmfao
Sterman99 bruh botw is the most over rated game I’ve ever played the puzzles suck and the shrines are boring as fuck there is so much god damn filler it feels so god damn empty... the Witcher had so much amazing dialogue side missions player choice etc I just straight up disagree with you lol and I think your opinion is dog shit
Well done Skill Up. You nailed it: "FFVII remake is a game that can and will be torn down by many people for its business model and its minor short comings. But it will also be held up by many others for their sheer love and joy of it all."
I don't know if I'd classify the combat system as a 'minor' shortcoming, I know I'm far from the only person disappointed by it.
@@simplygreen5832 you're the only person i've heard that doesn't like the combat
@Aaron9 Okay, picture this for a second, a hybrid between the original combat system, FF13's non-static combat positioning and the area affects/combo attacks from Chrono Trigger, ATB system is fine. I'd also consider adding turn based repositioning along the lines of Trails of Cold Steel 'move' command. You're right I haven't played it but I've watched more than enough footage/reviews/livestream plays to come to the conclusion I dislike it. If you favor a more action orientated game with manual character positioning, great, I hope you enjoy yourself. As for me it's a hard pass.
Aaron9 yeah I loved the combat I find purely turn based games lackluster and hard to get immersed
@@simplygreen5832 wait... you've never played it and you're shitting on the combat. jesus people are stupid
"A railroad is linear" Yes, yes it is.
The linearity isn't the problem. It's how drawn out those sections feel. The railway and the sewers feel more like padding overall.
@@Kwazy-mojo This game suffers from the roller coaster effect. The highs are amazing, but the lows are just frustrating. I love this game to death, but every little thing it does bad is reflective of a two issues. The padding done to certain sections that took literally two minutes to get through in the original is insane. The collapsed highway with the robot arms. The train graveyard as well. The lack of urgency in key moments is the most insane part of it all. I love the music and combat, but removing these things, show how the pacing and level design are very weak.
The boss fights are amazing as hell though.
@@ThatGBAGamer those slow sections were added probably to make the game last enough to cut it in parts.
@Aaron9 I played the game in 2015 there is no nostalgia.
@@ThatGBAGamer hard disagree, loved how they extended a lot of parts. made me feel like i was a part of the world and not just a guest in it. i still had my sense of urgency in the train graveyard too. only thing i think was truly dragged out was the 8 floors of airbuster shit, but at the same time it felt cool how it waslike you were actually making the boss weaker
Still can't believe it's been nearly 5 years since this remake was announced.

I really like the combat in this game. There is so much stuff to customize, and so many different options in each given situation, which makes it quite hard to master.

@@mistakenumber7880 sorry but the combat sistem is horrible, the camera angle in battles my god can't even describe how bad it is, and the npc characters look weird, ovral a desapointment 😥
I work in an "essential" job environment but somehow was able to convice my boss to give me the week of april 13 to 20th off. I think I know how ill be spending my free time!
Stay safe out there my dude!
It's a 30 hour game you'll have more than enough timr
@5pointgo Got a friend who's playing it right now, 40 hours in and he's not even started Shinra HQ yet
@5pointgo Game length is honestly subjective and depends on how much you like the busywork/sidequests that can extend it. Being technically able to last longer doesn't matter if it's not enjoyable to the people only getting thirty hours. That being said, I'm hoping it lasts longer for me.
@5pointgo I absolutely don't share your enthusiasm for sidequests. Maybe in an actual role-playing game, but not in a shorthand rpg. A lot of the latter have boring fetch quests without much consequence, and finding overpowered secret items tends to be something I reserve to future playthroughs. Not trying to shame anyone who likes being overpowered for their first playthrough, it just isn't fun for me.
18:05 - The camera battle mechanics problem you're having can be remedied by locking onto enemies with R3, as well as increasing the in-battle field of view in the Settings.
Imagine if Midgar was cyberpunk 2077 style open world, where you could travel between sectors with train etc.. man I would have seriously looked at the view all day
I... think there has to be more than two other parts, unless they're _considerably_ longer. Midgar is, like, the first third of the first disc. Sure, disc three is the last dungeon and a buncha sidequests but there's still a huge amount of disc 1 and, even if it's a bit shorter, all of disc 2. With as much as the expanded Midgar, they'd have to be blasting past stuff or massively expanding the next parts for only two to be needed.
4 parts is my guess
Turns out Rebirth is indeed much much longer
YEAHHHHHHHH BOI!!!!! I loved it -TwoSix
I can't help but wonder how they're going to pull off the absolute pacing and narrative nightmare that is the rest of the game after you get out of Midgar. If they can pull it off it will be an insane feat. I'm almost skeptical we'll even get subsequent games in the series
You're assuming the rest of the story will resemble the original's... Play this and you'll see
I've just finished the original on Switch and I can't even start to imagine how they're going to remake this game in its entirety with these graphics. Will be an amazing accomplishment
i dont know if they know how they're gonna do it either. i'm equally worried as i am excited for p[art 2

You could really tell the devs cared about this one. I felt the emotions and while it's not perfect this game is just so good and I loved every second of it.
It's awful, I got the exact opposite feeling like they didn't care at all and just wanted to cash in on the fandom.
I totally agree.
I completely agree. This game reinvented the wheel in such a way that it blew me away and gave me a new and deeper appreciation of the game than the original gave me.
My only complaints are the side quests and quest tracking. Not to mention a certain aspect in the fighting that whom ever you controlled the enemy would blitz and cheese you.
@@beefymario88 that’s your problem then
The devs cared about it, but the Director didn't give a hoot.
The great thing about the episodic nature of the series, is that Square can take any criticisms on board for this game and iron them out as the follow-ups are released.
That and they can focus on each segments new game systems. Open world, airship navigation, side quests, endgame etc etc. Everything gets more attention and time. I wouldn't even call it an episode. This is more like FF13 that had two follow up releases.
Yeah that worked real well for half-life 😏
@@gooberglop8461 I don't think you can compare Valve and SE. One company has financially motivated to release games and the other one can lay back and release nothing. Valve stopped being a game developer around the time of the Orange Box and Steam gaining momentum. I think its shameless how they've behaved in the gaming sphere for years now and I found the VR release to be an immense slap in the face for any normal consumer that might have loved HL. Two totally different situations here.
@@mikev8746 Squeenix is still developing but they are mostly a publisher now and a large portion of their efforts go into publishing games from other companies as well. I feel like the burnout from episodic developing is real and seeing a game deteriorate over time rather then improve is a real possibility. Plus they chose a horrible genre to do this too, JRPG's are massive, long adventures and waiting 1-2 years at best between parts is going to feel horrible.
@@gooberglop8461 Thats a good and fair point you're making. I'm currently more on the positive side but who knows how I will look at it when time progresses. There's definitely also a chance it will just get worse with ever release as Square fumbles near the finish line. The first outing though made a good impression for me. When it comes to JRPG's I think it's a mix. Compared to every other genre I think these games have the most the gain and lose when it comes to possible remakes. I'm certain we wont get the next part for 2-4 years at best so the wait will suck. But from my experience the eventual pay off will be worth it. Once you have everything in your hands a decade from now there's simply more value in having 3 parts. You will truly be able to play it from beginning to end with the scope the original had. Absolutely no modern game has offered that much, even games such as GTA and RDR were shorter and felt less 'grand' than a traditional JRPG from that era. This is partially because of how JRPG's heavily rely on abstractions. The characters during the prerendered exploration parts aren't properly scaled, the battles aren't really turn based. The player sort of 'decodes' these things in his head and figures what they are meant to portray. Which means that these large scaled PS1 JRPGs came with a sense of scope that is partially an illusion. The more technology progressed the harder it was to recreate this illusion due to the realism of it all. Which ends you up at games like FF13 and even FF15 in terms of scope and such. That's why I think having three games developed on the Remake has possible advantages, one of them being increased scope and content.

I wonder when the second part will come out. I hope within the next couple of years, though if that's next-gen, there will be a lot more work on the tech side. We'll see. In the meantime, I'm convinced I need to get this!

I'm not even an FF7 fan but I felt the relief and joy to be had in hearing how you first started this video. I wish the same applied for RE3 😔
Unfortunately the roles are reversed I feel. I think RE3 is a more worthwhile buy than this. Not a fan of splitting the game up. You're buying only a part of a 180 dollar game at least. Absolutely ridiculous.
@@Odie50000 So you think a 5 hour game is worth 60 dolars, but a 35 hours game is not just because it is not "complete"?
@@VitinRitsu Correction, RE3 is a 20 hour game at least because of the number of times you need to play through to get everything out of the game. Including the Shop, Nightmare, and Inferno difficulty modes as well as those modes boasting RNG and moved items and drops.
@@VitinRitsu Indeed that is correct. At least RE3 is complete. Why would you spend $180 on a complete game sold to you in 3rds?
@@Odie50000 I haven't played either of them yet but I was VERY excited for the RE3 remake (played it to death back in 1999). I do wanna reserve my opinion on it for when I play it but there does seem to be some uniformity in everyone's response towards it (game length, underwhelming potential, etc). though I can see what you're getting at about a full priced game being a "complete" package as opposed to a full priced game only being a part of a greater whole.

Just want to say thank you for being so open about the spoilers in your videos. It's often hard to watch other CZcamsrs Reviews without getting spoiled or warned.
The midgar exploration just seems like a huge missed opportunity. The whole thing just sounds like they wanted to make it Yakuza but with final fantasy but missed the whole interesting content part of the equation.
Yeah all the side quests seem only a little better than the awful ones from XV. But in general this game seems at least better than XV, which I thought was just okay.
SE has never been good as sidequests as they barely put effort into them. Then again, I should point at who is behind the projects. FF X and XII are probably good ones, XII the best far as sidequests go. Yakuza was developed by a guy that did mini-games in the first place, so he is a master at it. He understands the fun and how it should contribute to world and story in some way. Most games aren't good at executing this. FF XV was just terrible, so this wasn't a surprise.
I'm glad. I've never finished a Yakuza game. I always get bored a few hours in and stop. So the less this is like that the better.
@@SkySoFew So you've bought Yakuza games and then never finished them because you didn't like them? I have to ask, how many did you play?
And considering he just said the sidequest aspect which you probably only were able to access two or three a few hours in, you wouldn't be familiar enough to comment on it. If this did worse than Yakuza and it's praised for good sidequests and mini-games, you're actually speaking against FF VII R lol
@@blumiu2426 I bought and tried zero, the remake of 1 (kewami or however you spell it) and 6. I'm glad people like them, they're just not for me.
22:15 - Nailed it, I know. Thank you. Moving on.
I loved that bit so much lol
My first game when I bought my first PlayStation. Been part of my childhood and glad that SE remade a part of it. I hope they complete it all. Cheers!
Damn. I knew I should've brought over my PS4 to the campus.
13:20 "This one's a little weird, sis"
@@Grimpachi No it isn't...
I realize theres probably a video discussing this somewhere in the archives but uhh... anyone know where I can get that art on the wall. The character portraits? It'd be much appreciated.
This is the very first 3D Final Fantasy game to be given a remake (not remastered like FF12, FFX, FF8). Final Fantasy 3 and 4 were also given remakes but they were originally 2d games.
Steve Burton was originally going to reprise his role as Cloud Strife for the remake. However, due to his voice not matching a younger version of the character, he was replaced with Cody Christian. His voice over work on the game can be heard in the PSX 2015 trailer.
13:20 She picked that up from Zack in CC 😭😭😭
Thoroughly enjoyed it. Played the original on day one and I feel they captured the essence of the original very well, from the quirky parts to the emotional beats.
Amazingly well done remake, especially after the let down of RE3 Remakes length.
Very well done, I cant imagine how long it will be though until the next part. 😭
I'm excited to see how other developers and publishers react to the probable succes of FF7R. If this translates in big sales you can be assured more classic games will get the full remake treatment. Very exciting to say the least. I do think they established most assets, systems and essential parts of game design. Being on unreal definitely helped so I have faith that part 2 will be released within 2-3 years. They hinted towards this in various interviews too. Safe for any weird things happening I doubt it will suffer from delays either, but you can never truly know.
1-2years if all goes according to plan apparently
@@eKko0 They actually said that? I mean I guess 2 years is possible if they have their stuff in order and don't want to add to many new systems. Bust still, if they plan to make the overworld an openworld in the remake that can''t possibly be done in 2 short years can it? I'd be fine with 3 years inbetween titles, that sounds like the sweet spot.
Hey Skillside! NIce Video! Could you tell us a bit more about endgame bosses & post game content? Square said that "if you are expecting enough end game content, you won't be dissapointed" is this true? Are there post ending bosses? Or in general is there enough to do after you finish the last boss?
Great review! Good to hear the combat is one of the strong points. I'll probably hold off on this for a while, still a little annoyed about it being multi-part, I'd understand it if it were half of the main story or something.
1:16 someone please tell me what's the name of the track that starts at 1:16
It sounds amazing and I've been searching for it since the e3 2019 demo trailer
Dude I’ve been looking for it too but now luck :(
main theme of Final Fantasy VII remake! It's really great, give it a listen!
@@rezalzalahmusic7605 Thank you kind stranger
man I played this game, it was my first final fantasy ever, I never even played the original, and every time I think about this game I either get incredibly happy or I cry, depending on what I'm thinking about in the game.
The original was my first FF and I finally got around playing the remake a few months ago and boy oh boy was I blown away. I consider myself a die hard FF7 fan and this remake felt like Square decided that I'd been working too hard, dealing with too much crap and I deserved a break. Loved the game, 10/10 even with its shortcomings, I can't wait to play the rest of the series.
I loved that Emet-Selch reference 😍
Can someone help me out? What song was Used at the beginning of the video? I know it’s a remix of let the battle begin but I can’t find it anywhere
"Squats & Pull ups Mini-game Battle theme EXTENDED | Final Fantasy 7 Remake" This is it.
"Well...they pulled it off" Instant screaming.
FF games starting in the early 90's are the reason why I fell in love with video games. I'm pretty torn here though. The complaints against this part of the remake could be forgiven if it was a flawed early chapter of the game. But it's the whole game as it exists for now. Seems like it would be a far better plan to wait two years for them to complete this project.
I think two years might be optimistic. The best comparison we have is FFXIII which released a new game every two years. I expect VII:R to be the same. And given that they stretched the opening few hours of the first disk of three disks into a single release then I doubt it'll be finished with only one other release. Not to mention SE says they don't know how many releases it'll be too finish the game, so they don't have a solid plan and are making it up as they go. We could be in for a long wait for a finished game
3:33 yes the experience is the most important part. Massive ff7 fan here and I always wanted to see a complete overhaul and I got one!
Great review as always
I honestly feel that "it's linear" is just not a valid criticism. Some of the greatest games of all time are linear. There's just a difference between good linearity and bad linearity.
glad to hear you enjoyed it as much as I did skilly
how good was that ddr section
here's hoping because they have the engine and a lot of assets they can go full steam ahead on part 2
You looking forward to making Darkest Dungeon PvP videos? ;)
Omg so amazing
Top 10 ff waifus?
@@SkillUp agreed. The characters are just perfect.
I think it will help part 2 will be on next gen consoles, open world games still didn't look or feel the part on consoles this generation. They will have way more design freedom on next gen. With all the main systems down they can focus on the open world part of it completely while iterating on what's there right now. In retrospect I think it was a genius move for them to split the game up. It really is a win-win for both the publisher and the developer but also the consumer. Everyone gets more time/money/gameplay/quality etc etc.
Great review! I'm already prepared for massive nerd tears... I hold em back just from watching the final trailer lol. The first major rpg experience I ever had was FFVII, I chose it as a gift because I thought, "hey, it's got three discs, good bang for it's buck." Little did I know how big of an impact it would have on me, and that I would get to relive it all over again many years later. Definitely gonna hit that sub button!
