Best game ever, AGAIN
elden ring is a specific niche in gaming. Some people don’t like the lack of story telling, cutscenes, npcs, towns, and traditional staples of many other rpgs.
When the merchant is talking about how his back hurts, he says, "The years have not been kind to us" man that shit just made me smile. I feel you bro.

My favorite part is how a lot of the dialog feels like it’s subtly “matured” in this version.
There is a part early when you get Ashley where Ashley hears a roar in the distance and asks Leon “do they have wild animals here?” prior to them getting briefly separated, only for Leon to find out that roar was from a hulking monster with steel blades as arms. When he reunites with Ashley after fighting the monster and she asks if he is okay, he responds “I’m fine, you were right about them having animals here”
It’s both a badass thing to say, and Leon protecting Ashley from the truth to avoiding her feeling even more afraid.

You really should play the original just to get a full picture/context of why this remake is so good.
Same here, the original was such an overrated game for me, compared to the original Biohazard titles(big RE2&3 fan here), however this remake is something else... hit's all the right tones in regards to survival horror games, dropped the campy tone(to some degree) but improved in pretty much any other aspect. It's such a darn good game with so many secrets, ways to approach/skip certain encounters and overall replay value. It's insane.

a frien will borrow me his ps5 to play this, and before that, i went to refresh my memory with the original, i did not remember this game being so old, it came out in 2005, but i might have played it on 2007/8 since games in my country arrived late, and i only could play it at my cousin's house, and since then, never touched it again, and the game, i dont know how, but it feels timeless, yes, the "no walking while shooting" is a thing, and shooting with square is weird to the modern era of controls, but is just amazing how the game holds so fresh after so many years, and the pacing is immaculate.
That combat experience is spot on. The game really forces you to choose every options available. When you're unlucky with the last encounter where you waste many ammo, suddenly stealth became a very tempting option to thin out enemies in the next encounter. Getting rough with low damage and no explosives for crowd control, now you scour every single "red means boom" you can find with your eyes. And it's somehow felt good rather than demanding, it's actually amazing
The only other RE game that deliver this combat experience is RE 5. People need to stop disrespecting RE 5 like is such a demotion in quality compared to 4, because it is not.

I think when people say it wasn't a "good RE game" they mean it wasn't horror, okay then but, one could argue the RE franchise was never really this A list horror experience some people make it to be, it was always action but whatever. To me RE5 has the story in the main numbered titles, so to me it was a great RE game.
The overwhelming success of Dead Space and RE4 remakes show just how much gamers still love the survival horror style. Hopefully we see a new golden age for these types of games. Even with the failings of Calisto Protocol, it's still one more game to nudge the meter back in this genre's favor.
Neither of these games are "survival horror". Cattle like you are exactly why survival horror died once already and its now nothing but a marketing label to make it sound like a game is even more horrorerer compared to the competition

played the OG in 2005 when i was 17....playing the remake now at 34....falling in love to this game all over again....
I first played the original when I was 20. Must've played it at least 3 or 4 times after that and now that I'm 37 going on 38, it's amazing how the original still holds up despite the game showing its age in some areas. I know the remake is an outstanding achievement and can't wait to get my hands on it. Still have to finish the Dead Space Remake which is a great remake in its own right. This is a great time to be a gamer.
@@AmariMarvelous I've played the OG a few times recently in preparation and I'm amazed at all the parts that haven't really aged well or don't fit are just gone or redone in the best type of way. This is how you do a remake to perfection!

Cuz even the original was kinda lengthy but you didn't notice it because the pacing was so good and I'm hearing the pacing on the remake is great as well.
I never thought anyone could take something perfect and turn it into something even more fantastic, but here we are. This game is just very well done (and I'm not even much of an RE fan).

I'm really hoping Capcom brings Leon back in future game(s) and I'd definitely be down to see more of Ashley as well. Which is a huuuuuge departure from how I felt about her after the original RE4.

As soon as I beat it the first time I said to myself "This is one of the best video games I've ever played" so glad to see that sentiment is shared amongst so many gamers.
The emotional punch that they added to this rendition of RE 4 is just…the best. I wasn’t expecting it, and it caught me off guard. Very well done. “This time it has to be different” was such a simple line, but man it hit me hard.
It really is insanely good. They almost perfectly captured the feel of the original, added moments that are genuinely terrifying, and the game is absolutely stunning visually. These last few years have been incredible for Resident Evil, what a time to be alive.
When I beat it, I immediately wanted to jump back in and play it again all over. That's how I felt with breath of the wild. That's how I knew capcom did a darn great job. Easily a great masterpiece once again
That's how you know when a game will really stick with you, in recent times the only games that elicited such a feeling from me was Metro Exodus and Elden Ring.
I played tomb raider 7 times witcher 3 too.

I played through the entire Ashley sequence without realizing you could use the lamp to stop the knights.
Bro same, I saw SkillUp freeze the guys by aiming the lamp and was like "holy shit , you can do that???" But not using the lamp I feel like it made that entire sequence more fun for me at least.
i did few speedruns and beat the game on all difficulties and never tried it as well :D i had a thought
I felt the exact same, I was always on the brink. I never had enough ammo, and there was always a scarcity of herbs when I needed them most. It was exhilarating.

This is one hell of a ride. So good. I love the original and the vision Shinji Mekami achieved with that rollercoaster development cycle. What Yasuhiro Anpo, Kazunori Kadoi and Yoshiaki Hirabayashi did with this remake shows so much respect for that vision and for us, the fans. Amazing game

@@sttateits a defensive mechanic. You're not supposed to use it offensively. That's why it's faster to just run. And use the lamp in case you get cornered. That gameplay decision isn't a waste of time. You just didnt get it😂
I’m not sure if anyone has mentioned this - but you can actually see if an Enemy will transform into the mutated version if their eyes are glowing red. If you take them out by Melee combat then they do not transform, however blowing off their head more often than not causes them to transform.

They straight-up made RE4 a masterpiece once again, and for that Capcom definitely deserves all my praise *and* money. They’ve definitely been on a major roll with RE ever since the PS4 generation with RE7, and I definitely can’t wait to see what they have in store with the series in the future. Especially with the rumored/datamined plans of Separate Ways DLC starring Ada Wong.
Excellent review! I think you really illustrated why RE4R is such an outstanding success in terms of game design. One minor nitpick though...Leon was working with local Spanish law enforcement in order to locate the president's daughter. He was only following up on a potential lead and didn't know she was there in that particular village until just before he had to jump out of window. Hence the reason he isn't getting a massive amount of support from the start.
Capcom has done an amazing job creating the sense of accomplishment when all hope is lost. The way that the backend 'director' provides monumental wins for you, such as having no healing left or being low on ammo, is amazing. Something people will probably miss but it's definitely there. It allows you to make mistakes but still pull a win out, not always, but when you really are putting in the work.
Shows how much gamers these days need their hands held.

@@johngibson3770 this mechanic was in the OG version of the game. It's ok to just enjoy a game and have it balance out your experience according to your circumstance. It makes people wanna go back to it. We got rogue likes for old school gamers and many many many other games that don't hold your hand.if you feel otherwise I suggest you browse through steam or happily recommend some tough as nails games

You've gotta try RE4 2005 with the HD project installed, its amazing how the maker finding the original sources and inspirations in spain and remaking the textures in HD as well as all the remodels does the game amazing justice
The story is more cohesive, I dont remember much about the OG but I remember I loved it, And I love this and it seems new and more areas that are different, I may be wrong, And this seems to not be just about the cult and weaves a story where it connects to the whole.
I remember waking up late at night as a kid to my brother playing re4 on my ps2, sounds scaring me shitless. Now that im hopping into the remake, its like meeting an old friend you haven't spoken to in a long time, but as soon as you talk to them its like a day didn't pass at all and it was even better than you remembered them being. Capcom is absolutely killing it!!
I feel this is the first RE game even the old action ones like 5 and 6 or the OG 4 where I feel I can customized how I play and my Leon is different from others. Obviously it's limited to the weapon variety but your loadout really allows you to express how you dish violence. Even the stealth approach is awesome. I love it so much and I love the characterization of Leon and Ashley.

Glad to see you enjoyed it! This was my first time playing RE4 (I'd previously only played Biohazard and Village) and I'm absolutely loving my time with it! It's fascinating to see the DNA it shares with Village, I see a lot of similarities between the two, especially in setting and tone, so I'm glad these remakes have given me a reason to jump into the older games and see where it all started! Must try RE4 VR next... 👀

Great review! I'm not even sure if I ended up beating it for Gamecube but years later I was obsessed with the Wii version and beat that probably 30 times. More recently I beat the VR version 4 times (it's unbelievable if you haven't tried it yet) and RE4 remains one of my favourite games ever...the remake tops it in every way 🤯 it still feels like RE4 but perfected in just about every way!
this remake is definitely the gold standard of remakes in my mind, i would say even above Resident Evil 2, which is probably one of my favourite games of all time. as a side note, hearing you gush about Leon as a newer fan of resident evil 4 was gold, Leon is easily my favourite character in the series and this game did him so much justice

Ralph captured the exact reason I was so excited for Village. Every single part of the game shouted out RE4 to me.
FINALLY a review that can use other footage other than stock footage! Skill Up, I'm so happy to have you back on the right side of history and it was really nice that you highlighted some things that most other reviews barely talk about...like Ashley. Ashley and Leon's relationship is just LEAGUES better in this game and Ashley, as a character, is actually someone I'd like to meet or play as again in a future entry. To not only remake one of the best games ever made, but also improve upon it by recontextualizing characters for a modern era is simply astounding. Capcom has officially done the thing!
I just beat RE4 Remake at the same time this review came out lol, I recommend it 10/10… The game keeps you thinking quick the whole game, theirs a lot of unique scenarios that somehow keep getting better as you go through the game 🔥

I thought she was fine not perfect but fine
Excellent analysis of Ada's tone and demeanor. I would also add that she's *trying* to be distant and cold rather than bored altogether. Since the events of RE2, she's had time to reflect: she got shot while backing down from shooting Leon, and she nearly lost the G sample. She got distracted, faltered, and almost failed her mission, which is something she doesn't believe a consummate professional should ever allow to happen. And it's not a stretch to think that she may have put the blame on her bond with Leon. So, she decided at some point that if she ever met Leon again especially while on a job, she wouldn't let that get in her way. She decided to be cold and detached and mostly succeeds, except that her intentions, decisions, and actions betray her anyway. She obviously still cares for Leon, and to an extent doesn't want an innocent college girl to be doomed to the fate looming above her. There is a struggle between these two sides - the outwardly distant and all-business Ada, and the inwardly human and emotional Ada. And Lily's voice acting captures one side of that very well.

They literally took one of my top three games of all time and made it even better. I’ve played the original for thousands of hours, and I’m waiting to play this until I go on vacation :)

I didn't think Capcom would be able to pull it off as the original set the bar so high, but not only RE4-R met the bar, but it set new standards

After RE3 back in 2020, I'm very glad too see Capcom hit it right out of the park with this one
Capcom, unfortunately, has never given a shit about RE3. It was a bargain bin side project back then, it was in 2020. I think Capcom understood the immense weight of expectations with an RE4 remake and knew they had to nail it
@@Ryuk45 if I’m not mistaken, didn’t they outsource re3 to work on 4 themselves? I could be wrong but I remember that being the case.
Don't quote me, but I think RE3 was made by a B team/studio/whatever, and the team from RE2 worked on RE4.
@@Homiloko2 that's correct. They even made a public statement regarding this. RE4 was made from the primary RE team. Which is why it's so good

The last time the game ended up winning the GOTY
stealth was a welcome one, befitting for a survival horror game with resource management, adding gameplay variety on how you want to tackle faced situations. gameplay-wise, it's more dynamically engaging w/ parrying, ducking grabs, shooting, and CQCs; varies from pistol, sniper, shotgun & explosives that excel in their roles. Pulling it all off, it's satisfying when all connects.

I did 5 runs in the first three days of it being out, after having another day off I’m currently finishing my 6th play through on my way to platinum.

The games combat is absolutely top notch. Glad you enjoyed this, it’s a fantastic game and while there’s some aspects I prefer about the original, this is just a great game overall.
Whether anyones likes the original more or you like the remake more, I don’t think it really matters because we all live in a world where we have 2 great games, and everybody wins.
It’s the first game that I have completed multiple times since MGS4 on all the difficulties. Actually it is the first game that I have fully finished since MGS4. And I totally felt the similarities between it and a Kojima game but couldn’t put words into that feeling.
The last console I had was a PS3 and to try RE4 bought myself a new PS5 and I can’t stop playing it every day after work, I have been sent back in time and having fun playing video games 10 years.
It’s funny you mention how much darker and more grim RE4 is compared to 3 and 2 because of killing people that look alive, the whole time I’m playing and blowing the villagers’ heads off I’m thinking things along the lines of “she was someone’s mom” or “he was someone’s husband” 😢
The end credits really drive this point home
I think its a little mixed for me if it's darker our not than 2 at least maby even 3 but the explanation on why their are no kids in the village and the story of the village before and during its infection is so sad

@Afro Shinobi They nailed that as well. The original did it and a lot of people missed it cause they weren't really paying attention to the sequence of events shown in the pictures. REmake 4 pays homage by showing the pics as the first game did, but then goes even farther with it. Having the camera that took all of the pics be one of the treasures you find was great as well. Such a nice touch.
They're out to kill you, it doesn't matter who they are at that point.

This game is such a trip. There are moments where you're like man did they remove that part and then it shows up later in a reimagined way that is even better. They took one of the best games of all time and somehow made it even better, hopefully the same can be said of the island which I just got to.
The question whether or not a remake is necessary isn't even important at this point. This game is just so good, it's been a long time where I've played such a long game where every single moment is peak, usually many others that are rated super highly have moments that are boring or where you wish that it would end, but not this one. I've played 20 hours, just got to the island and I cannot recall lately a game where it was a masterpiece every single second. So satisfied, Capcom proving themselves as the best gaming company around.
Without giving too much away I'll just say yes, the island is better too. 😊

@@JuliusCaesar103 I'm almost finished but it has been one wild ride. From the village brawl, the fight with El Jigante, everything about the castle, and the kickass boss fights with Krouser. I've been enjoying the hell out of this and I'm already looking forward to playing it again.

The island in my opinion has the two best chapters in the whole game: 13 and 15. What happens in terms of both horror and action there is beyond me.
Definitely a huge improvement compared to the original, atleast in this segment.
As for the Last of Us comments regarding gameplay, I think it's a pretty valid argument for lower difficulties. That being said, if you haven't already tried, I would go back to one of those Last of Us Part 1 or 2 encounters and try it on Survivor mode. Don't restart if things go south, just roll with it and see what happens. The limited resources cause you to use so many weapons and tactics in your arsenal and I think you'll find moments similar to RE4 when you do that (at least I did). Love the review and can't wait to give RE4 Remake a go here soon!
100%. I did my first playthrough on grounded and every encounter was phenomenal. It was crazy difficult at times but very much worth it.
@@grandrtiv26 Since it's one of Sony's golden goose titles, I feel like they probably have to include those lower difficulties for the wider audience, but both Part 1 & 2 are absolutely meant to be played on Survivor or Grounded! Displays the full potential of the mechanics, especially with the limited resources and awesome enemy AI
I was especially baffled by part 2's moderate difficulty where enemies feel damn near blind while hard mode make them look like the most realistic AI in a video game lol.
I also agree the combat in the game is very dynamic, but it can be quite unchallenging in the lower difficulties (I'm guessing because it's a narrative-focused title and they'd probably prefer people experiencing the full story)
Great review. I think the way they upgraded the encounters with the knights really blew my mind. So tense and crazy and the sound effect of the bullets ricocheting off the armor. Just nutty shit. So damn good!

I play the og once a year. I love every single version of this game including the VR. Maybe it's just nostalgia or my own bias but I truly believe the remake is one of the best video games I've ever played. I'm on playthrough 9 now 😂😂
Hey, I love you and all, but I couldn't stop myself from giggling when I heard "the minecraft chase" at 18:06! Good stuff.
Looking at footage of the original game makes me realize how much dead space must have been inspired by the original, from the kicking action to the human like enemies transforming into complete monsters as you fight them.
The Dead Space devs have said multiple times the inspiration for their game was RE4
Remember playing the hell out of this the first time around. Getting the Chicago Typewriter and the Leon's gangsta 30's. Absolutely a blast of enjoyment to play. Just kept you hooked. God know how many hours I poured into this. Looking for to this remake.
This game is a super fun ride. Graphics, sound design, music, characters, overall presentation, just fantastic stuff! And the fact that there is a new game plus and you can unlock new skins via just playing the game with no microtransactions is just awesome. It feels like the good old days.

Re4 was one of those special games. Many fond memories, played through like 3 times one summer. Can’t wait to pick up the remake.
I don't usually replay a game that I finished unless it's like 1 year apart
But doing a second playthrough trying to do it as fast as I can is surprisingly fun
just wait until you unlock some of the overpowered special weapons lol

I am absolutely enamored with the darker tone, they really bring back some elements of horror back in the remake, that I did not feel at all in the 2005. I was never really terrified of the regenerators in the original but remake, OMG especially the bit towards the end of the game. I'm on my 4th play-through and I was still waiting for this review lol fml
the body bags section was sooooo intense ;_; especially since i had no ammo for anything except a couple shots in my rifle and pistol

I had forgotten how scary this game was (scary in a good way). Maybe I was just more immune to scary things when I was younger, but when I played the remake, I had constant goosebumps

I’m one of those people that grew up with 4 and I still would say it’s a top 3 game of all time for me. I absolutely loved this remake, even though I enjoy the original game more, but I had an amazing time with this remake for sure. Definitely still doing more play throughs of this one. Capcom has been really impressive these past few years I must say.

"Talk about 'sticking the landing,'" got the biggest laugh out of me than anything else in 2023. This was my first RE game since playing 6 and it was effing amazing. Immediately bought the dlc and RE2 & 3 remakes.
Skillup absolutely channeling the entire internet when he says everyone wants to be friends with Leon. I swear he's like John Wick Keanu in this game, absolute badass, throwing out oneliners, and very kind when he has to be
I can't believe how much I like this game. The OG is so old that I can't even remember it. that probably helps! I can definitely see myself replaying it and enjoying it more the 2nd time because there is a bunch of shit I missed so far on this playthrough. AWESOME game!
