This right here! The fact that parents aren’t trained to hear their kids because they have never practiced it is HUGE!

I am a 25 year old woman and my boyfriend and I are going through counseling/therapy right now to flesh our a good bit of the bad ideas that we both picked up from our families before we get married. I am a product of a dysfunctional family and he is a product of a good single mother, but a single mother nonetheless so we NEED your stories. So please keep sharing as much as you all are willing to share b/c if you think the social pathology that was passed to millennial black people are bad just know that the ideas passed to Gen Z is worse. Thank you both

This is so relatable to me but in the weirdest way. My parents are Jamaican immigrants who don't fit the status quo. I never grew up with these issues. But my Puerto Rican mother in law fits EVERYTHING you said. She's not black (and will fight anyone who says she has any black in her), but she grew up in the NY projects and fits the "black" stereotypes more than any person I know.
We keep telling her she's need therapy, but if the therapist doesn't agree with her perspective completely, she either goes off the deep end on them, us or herself. It's so toxic and tiring. I've resolved to "stay out of grown folks business" anytime she wants to talk bad about her husband, her life, etc. I love her, but I wish we could actually HAVE CONVERSATIONS. If it's about anything real, she doesn't want to hear it.

Glen, what you said at 17:00 was amazing. I appreciate you and Yvette sharing the ups and downs. My husband and I are 3 years into marriage and even in that short time we got to a point where we considered separating, why? Because we brought all the dysfunction of our parents relationships into ours. Hearing your podcast and see you and Yvette do what you have to do for each other encouraged me. You mention all the time to seek therapy and community. With therapy and prayer and finding church community, we are in a much better place! I thank you both for sharing your stories!

Yvette saying the kids always follow her outside reminds me of the trend where mom gets up and all the kids follow and dad gets up and the kids just watch. You guys should try that !

Anybody else’s listening with headphones and their voices are only playing out of one side? The music is coming through both and the mics are only in one side…. Also I listen to stuff all day but this podcast(CZcams or Apple podcast) is the only thing that’s playing like this. So weird…anywho I loved this episode once I got past the my imbalance lol

Probably my least favorite thing about being 25 and a Gen Z married mother. Right now I have to process my grandmothers and my mother’s trauma all beginning with my grandfather whom I never met. My grandmother is so bound by keeping up an image. I had to hear my grandmother story from a family friend and my grandmother was livid and disowned the family friend that has known my at the time 40 year old mother when she was 9 years old.
God has literally brought all things to light my maternal trauma so I can do better. It’s so annoying that no one can be up front.

WEB DeBois described what Glen is describing as “double-consciousness” in The Souls of Black Folk. He says “it is a peculiar sensation, this double-consciousness, this sense of always looking at one’s self through the eyes of others, or measuring one’s soul by the tape of a world that looks on in amused contempt and pity. One ever feels his twoness-an American, a Negro; two souls, two thoughts, two I reconciled striving, two warring ideas in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder.”
This is why it is critical to fill ourselves with the Word of the Lord, and to tell and share our own stories (while listening to others), amongst other Black folks, and with the rest of our Brothers and Sisters in the world.

I’m Hispanic, I like glen also Don really listen to anyone that isn’t of color simply bcuse I feel like being of color builds a specific strong character that a lot of ones is forced on us. for me being brown has brought a lot of tribulations. Both my parents are immigrants, I’m first generation, the oldest of 4
With a Now recovered Alcoholic father. Being a female and also not being told their was more to life than just being married. I didn’t even know sqwat about nothin. As if, I myself was immigrant aswe because my parents didn’t hav he tools to teach me anything.
Glen, todays episode made me cry. It made me cry bcuse I felt it to the core of my soul and only if you lived with broken parents and understand that it has Been generations of ignorance; one can only sympathize and hope that we don’t continue the curse with it children. Love love his episode and I too wish more ppl would tune in. I proudly share and post ur content on my small platform because more ppl NEED to hear tho vulnerable information. Thank you, God bless 💗✨

This hit hard good convo I think yal need to stay on this especially when you talk about the church. The reflection of marriage is bad even with the way ppl talk about it let alone how it looks. I’ve been married 11 yrs I talk to the younger and they have no interest in it . We got real problems out here ppl aren’t talking about
