    Michael finally comes face to face with the legendary Herbert Johnson Indiana Jones hat -- specifically the Streets of Cairo fedora from Raiders of the Lost Ark. Can the Herbert Johnson's reputation live up to the Advintage's incredible precision? Or will the HJ's reputation sink the experience? Find out.

    This has been IH-300: Intermediate Study of Indiana Jones Headwear. As Professor Frenches' TA I'd like to thank you all for attending this semester, and I'd like to remind you that the final will be on Monday in room 305 of the Brody building. Remember, no phones, laptops, satchels, monkeys, or grail diaries will be allowed in the final. Professor French will be in his office today from 4 to 5, and he will be answering comments tomorrow from 4 to 5. I hope to see all of you next semester in IH-400: Advanced Whipwork and Associated Adventuring.

  • @Jblasermodels
    @Jblasermodels Před 19 dny

    Hi Michael. How would you say the felt of the HJ compares with the AdVintage? I have an early 70s brown poet that’s basically the same model as Tom Baker’s green one, and the felt is so thin compared to a lot you see now which don’t have that easily shaped-ness and tend to be thicker/more rigid

    • @retroblasting
      @retroblasting  Před 19 dny +1

      the HJ felt is not the thickest I've run across over the years with hats, but it isn't that pliable thin dress felt either. Just thick enough that you can't do anything with it. That's why I prefer the Advintage. He gets the shaping correct while also providing a durable hat.

I attempted a phone call from Australia and could never quite get the time right. I eventually sent them a postcard and then began the long back and forth about sizing . Alden of Carmel had no idea if the boots were the Indy boots but they said they looked similar. I sent a tracing of my feet and a US dollar money order and about 6 months later my boots arrived.

They were out of deluxe versions so I got a regular FedIV. The ladies at the Hattery were incredible. They fitted me, talked with me, and Naomi formed the hat right there in front of my eyes from a group of photos. While not the ‘top’ maker anymore, they’re more affordable and it’s more than worth the trip if anyone is in or near Sydney.

I’m glad the HJ is back to bespoke and not the horrible factory made ones they were selling us in the 2000s. There’s no comparison to AdVintage atm. Thomas is absolutely amazing, his materials are the best, and his customer service is amazing.plus his hats are all finest Portuguese beaver. Ok, Michael, serious question though. Advintage has all the little details, but that is a replica of a "Worn" hat right? Like broken in. Would it be safe to say that the Herbert Johnson is closer to a "fresh off the rack hat, with less character to a "years worth of adventuring hat" ? Indy's hat would have been new at some point in its life right? Didn't it gain character through his adventures over time? Just a thought.

      There is no way this HJ would become that hat over time. Remember, Ford's hat wasn't authentically worn in. It was ARTIFICIALLY weathered, so it had to look 90% correct from new to get the look they wanted.

      @retroblasting Thanks. I'm torn because, on the one hand, accuracy is awesome, but on the other, so is originality. I wanted a Herbert Johnson because having a hat from a 100-year or so old company is awesome, but so is having an accurate hat. At the end of the day, I'm NEVER going to be Indy. But feeling like him for a split second, looking in the mirror.... that's worth the time to chase down the right hat. Even if it's not from Herbert Johnson in London.

    As someone who owns both a recent HJ Crusade Poet and Advintage's mass produced Harrison in Crusade style? I'm partial to the cheaper hat.
    The quality difference is notable, but I paid $175 in 2019 for something that's 85-90% screen accurate vs. $550 in 2022 for something equally as accurate just higher quality materials and the brand name. The HJ is great, but not for almost $300 more. Keeping it for the legacy, but the cheaper hat is my daily driver and I love weathering it.

    • @retroblasting
      @retroblasting  Před 19 dny

      That's great, but it also can be misleading. My Advintages are the Masterpiece-grade versions, which are far higher quality than what HJ is offering as their ONLY option. Someone could read your comment and think Advintage is a cheaper grade of fedora, when in actuality you have different purchase grades with them versus HJ. You **opted** for Advintage's cheapest choice, but that wasn't the ONLY choice from their shop.

  • @blakeromo
    @blakeromo Před 20 dny

    After looking up advintage hats, they seem to be half of the price of the Herbert Johnson. While I'm disappointed that they didn't live up to Michael's expectations (even after finding the original molds) it just go's to show again that fans dedication rivals companies results. Simply put, the fans do the best work, because they care more. Details matter more to a fan than a company who just makes things for money at the end of the day. Fans make things, because of passion. And that Trumps all.
    (Correction one option is that cheap, other versions and styles are more.)

    At the end of the day, proper hat fit is as dependent upon the build and facial characteristics of the wearer as the hat shape itself. Not everyone is going to look good in an Indy-style fedora. Harrison is a ruggedly handsome and well-proportioned grown man. It was great when the movies put Indy in a gray Stetson (or whatever it was). It might have been interesting to have thrown a Trilby or Homburg on him as well. I suppose we did get a beret in Last Crusade. My point being is the perfect Indy hat replica may unfortunately not go well with every wearer of said hat, even if the fit and styling is perfect. Enjoy the Indy hat for what it is, then find a different hat that fits who you are.

And I’m sure “Big Caput,” or whatever the hat industry folks are colloquially known as, are more than capable of defending their own products without any assistance. My point was directed more at misguided cosplayers than collectors of movie memorabilia. Certainly not everyone who wishes they were Mr Ford can simply become him by donning the headgear. Surely such a statement will only be found controversial to the small number of folks to whom it applies.

    20:10 brim on AdVintage is best and crown on HJ is best.
    When I saw the HJ hats on fans they all looked like Elmer Fud. The crown was way too tall and big. The hatter must have changed it up seeing the crown is shorter now.
    I have a FedIV, it’s been in rain, sleet and snow, shoved and rolled in travel bags, traveled with me around the world and I put the Indy turn in it and from all the real wear I think it looks identical to Indy’s hat. The color though never impressed me, the felt always seemed to dark.
    Harrison Ford made the Raiders hat what it is by personally aging it himself and bashing it for the film.
    Thats why fans hats don’t always look the part. It needs that unique hand shaping and aging and the proper turn to get it looking right.

      The crown on the HJ hat is awful, man. It looks flat and nothing like the crown in Raiders. But I try to be respectful of the blind, so I hope things work out for you in your life.

    Great video. Fantastic comparison between two quality fedoras.
    I have a John penman. 13yrs old. I like the temple grap scene the best. However, 13yrs old, rain, snow, Mexico, all over. It looks very streets of cario now and looks amazing. John makes a fantastic fedora.

    Until Michael began making these videos on Indy's various outfits from film to film, I never realized just how different they were. Subconsciously I think I knew that the various hats were different from Raiders, but now it's obvious just how unique that particular hat is. Fascinating how someone with the resources of Spielberg and Lucas weren't able to reproduce the original hat.

    I recently collaborated with Thomas Osygus and adVintage Hats as an illustrator. Their Indiana Jones fedoras are amazing and I myself am a proud owner of a 'Streets of Cairo' version. I can highly recommend adVintage Hats as one of the best makers of screen accurate Indy fedoras.

  • @christiancarpenter5567

    I will say, the Herbert Johnson hats were made the same way for the films. Harrison Ford actually messed around and folded the brim down himself on set. At least thats what I heared on a behind the scenes video a while back. someone please fact check that.

    • @retroblasting
      @retroblasting  Před 9 dny +1

      There is no way he could "mess with it" to the level that the crown would take the humpback shape versus the shape they are using. They do not have it correct where the crown is concerned. Plus, they aren't even using the same felt anymore, so you can't say with certainty they are made the same way. You have no clue. You're just parroting their PR speak.

    • @christiancarpenter5567
      @christiancarpenter5567 Před 9 dny

      @@retroblasting i agree they are slightly different, but you also have to take into account that the film costume designers also messed with the shape of the hat I.E weathering, crushing it, bending and folding it. I dont want to argue about it, because i do love your channel and content, as specially your lego Indiana jones videos. but for sure they are different material and I cant say for worse or better.

    In the original manufacturer's defense, they didn't beat those hats to hell, the production did. They sold them top of the line fedoras that the movie makers bent out of shape and gave character to. So even recreating the original hat with the original proportions, what comes out of the haberdasher will still differ from how it looks by time it's on screen and you need to beat it up a little yourself to tweak it properly.

    • @retroblasting
      @retroblasting  Před 18 dny

      This has nothing to do with "beating it up." If you've bought and worn bespoke hats your whole life (and clearly you haven't) you'd know this hat's entire block and crown needs total reshaping. The whole hat is off by a nautical mile. But hey, you keep pushing your empty theories.

      I agree with your assessment and if you notice in raiders the hat doesn’t always look pitch perfect like people think. People tend to create a false perception of the hat they piece together different angles of the hat from different scenes to create their ideal raiders hat in their mind. Also what I tend to see people complain about is the floppiness of the hat. They want it floppy but get upset when the hat doesn’t hold its shape or it holds its shape but it’s too stiff. You can’t have it both ways that’s just unrealistic. So if you want to do the beating up yourself I would recommend the Herbert Johnson. If you want the hat to look exactly like it does in a certain scene bit for bit then I would recommend Advintage. At the end of the day though the Herbert Johnson is gonna be more authentic and besides putting some character into the hat yourself is better than it being artificially made.
