I've still got my childhood Palitoy X-wing, miraculously intact apart from decals that have faded to a fetching salmon pink, and yes, I did apply those blooming battle damage stickers as a kid and regretted it almost instantly! I didn't realize the Kenner version was different until quite recently. I think the novelty of that electronic feature would have worn thin pretty quick as a kid, a bit like the Falcon's weird klaxon thing did... I mean, what did the red LED represent anyway? We all knew even then that the guns are on the end of the wings!? Might have been nice to have the sculpted tail though. Great video, and Happy VE Day to you, with thanks to all those who defeated the real life Dark Side!

I know I am late to the party here (two years late, but still…), but wanted to comment. I am Australian, and was living in Canberra, when I was gifted the Palitoy X-wing one Christmas, shortly after it was released. I was nine or ten at the time, and it was one of the best presents I have ever received. I did note that there were no lights, or sounds, as there was on the TIE Fighter, and the Falcon, but it didn’t bother me, at the time.
When I was fourteen, we upped and moved to Melbourne, for Dad’s work. The house we moved into was a stone’s throw away from a decent-sized shopping strip.
This strip had a Tandy Electronics store. It was school holidays, and I was aware by then that the Palitoy X-Wing was different to the Kenner x-wing, and, having a lot of free time in my hands, I decided to do something about that. I purchased a few bits and pieces from Tandy, and set about giving my X-Wing lights and sound.
I snipped out the plastic, where the light would go, and replaced it with a piece of red, clear, plastic, that I had in a pile of bits and pieces. I carefully took the X-wing apart, and wired it up. I installed a tiny light just behind the red nose piece, and had wiring going all the way to the back of the ship. I had a small 1.5v motor, which I wired up separately. I connected both of these to a push button switch, coincidentally, identical to the two shown in the catalogue image, and hooked everything up to a dual AA battery holder. I drilled a hole through the top of the X-wing, where the big blue button should have gone, and fitted the push button there. The whole thing was coming together nicely.
There was a problem, though. I had no way to access the batteries, when they went flat.
So, I carefully drilled four holes in the underside of the frame, where the battery holder would go. Using needle files, and a small hacksaw blade, I cut out that portion of the frame. This allowed me to slide the battery holder out of the hole, change the batteries, and put it back. I secured the cutout with white electrical tape, top and bottom, in one side, and bottom only, in the other. It didn’t look great, but it was on the bottom of the ship, and you rarely saw it.
So that’s how I “Kennered” my Palitoy X-wing.
Sadly, I sold my collection when I was in my late twenties, to two guys from NSW. They took everything, lock, stock, and barrels, and paid me enough money that I was able to buy the components to put together a (for then) top of the line PC, with the best sound, most RAM, and largest HDD money could buy… :)

I am lucky as I own a Palitoy X Wing too. I am came across it at a local toy show about 5 years ago. There was no way I was passing on it. For collectors in the US those Palitoy items are very cool and certainly add another focus for collectors if one chooses to go that route. Even at the very simplistic level, since these items are rarer, especially in the US, it is always nice to see one on person. Adding one to the collection, that"s even better.

I have a preference for the Kenner electronics of the original, just because I love the original designs of analog electronics in toys (and it's the one I grew up with, of course) - and I have a nostalgic love for that Kenner dentist drill. ;-) But the Palitoy's overall *look* is better, absolutely. The chrome R2, the shinier plastic, etc. - and the back sticker doesn't bug me at all. It's just a great looking variant. You should do a vid on the Glasslite variations of the ships, if you haven't already. Those pieces are just fascinating.

Awesome collaboration, I can't wait for more of these. =D
When Broken Vader threatened Michael that he would murder him in his sleep, was that a jab at The Last Jedi? I wonder what he thinks of the sequel movies...

Michael, NEVER underestimate the power of Broken Vader, but don't give him his arms back or you'll be in trouble.

I personally like very much the Palitoy variants, indeed I love it.... Michael please make a video with the Glasslite variants I think they are also cool.

Where did you get the lightsaber holding Kylie T shirt from?

I had the X-wing as a small child in Western Australia. The mention of electronics always confused me as mine had none but I'm sure it was a Kenner product?

Where do you get those stands!? Awsome as always btw. I am from UK and remember the utter disappointment of my brother, lights and sounds on my snowspeeder but none on his x-wing WTF palitoy

what was the alternate version of the imperial transport?? Was that just a concept with a repurposed single x wing engine affixed to the top? It looks fantastic

I applied the battle damage stickers to my x-wing as a kid, and then it occurred to me: you see how there is three blasts on the fuselage on each side and 4 stickers for each wing? I sincerely believe they were meant to be cut to taste for the damage look. Because having all that damage looks really bad, and makes the xwing look like it's completely destroyed instead of damaged.
