- Are you a Star Wars fan like me? In this video I restored Luke Skywalker's 1978 X-Wing! This was a really fun restoration project. I used a method called retrobright to bleach the plastic and remove the yellowing. It was really satisfying to bring this one back to life.

I loved the restoration but I also loved it how it was. You can tell it's been enjoyed and well cared for, it has all the markings and dirt of imaginative battles!
Minus the scuffed up canopy, the yellow aging on the plastic made it look like it had come right out of the original movies.
I do like the pristine look of the Xwing at the end, but it had more "life" in the beginning. Like with the water damaged Millennium Falcon toy in a different video.
Or left outside and forgotten about. I saw plenty of those owned by kids who had parents who got them whatever new toys they wanted, to hell with what they had.
Yeah I really liked the original look aswell, made it feel more realistic
Not to mention that it actually had significant value in its original state. The "restoration" made it completely worthless to collectors.
I’m remembering Christmas morning. I was only six years old when I unwrapped this present. My father is six years gone and I had forgotten this memory... sincerely I thank you. Treasure them while they are still here.
It made me happy to see this as well for similar reasons.

Started off looking like it had spent a lot of time on Tatooine or Dagobah and ended up looking like it had just come off the Incom assembly line. Exellent job!
Takes me back 45 years, when me and my cousin played together, on the weekends.
And yet the yellowed dirty one looked more like the one's in the movie.
Glad I found this comment. It looked aged and weathered in the beginning. The process that some people make for these "shiny new toys" to make them look authentic.
It would be perfect to leave that old plastic look, make some repairs and paint work, repair some stickers (sand paper would be peoper to imitate realistic paint defect...), clean cabin glas and... That's It!
But after all - yeah, this repair have some good efects also....
Completely agree. While it is neat to see something over 40 years old resemble how it looked brand new, the modelers of today would have paid for that grime!
@@ccgsweaw It's got an audience. People who grew up unboxing this toy probably would jump on a clean one that looks like it did when they were a kid. I'm a bit younger than that, and so I grew up with this stuff being at flea markets and yard sales. To me, and to other people my age, that grime is part of my nostalgia rather than a mar on it. I'd prefer one worked in, but I get why someone who was like 10 when the movie came out would want an X-Wing exactly how they remember it
True, I mean it's a rebel ship. They tend to always look old and outdated.
This "restoration" basically amounts to; clean everything out, take out the old paint and stickers, fix the electronics, apply new stickers and be done. No weathering, no new paint job, nothing. Even R2-D2 got a new paint job.
It's like the laziest "restoration" ever. It looks good but there is no "soul" to it.

Had one in 1978. Amazing how the wings are still in tact! They were so flimsy, mine broke from a very small drop. Nice to see this one restored.

Ah, little known fact time. The red stripes on the wing denote the call sign. Luke was Red 5. There are 5 stripes on his xwing in the movie. Everybody has been playing with Biggs Darklighters xwing.

Naw, Red 5's X-wing got blown up at Scarif. The techs didn't have enough time to paint the last two stripes on the replacement ship. You know, Alliance union rules and all. Wouldn't want to run afoul of the bureaucracy.

That is one of the coolest toys of my generation. Star Wars changed the game back in the day. The Darth Vader Tie fighter and Millennium Falcon make that list too.

@@paulavram6319 I always do, and I love TP, but Dave always says that he prefers to do restorations and repairs using tools and materials that can be easily found in any house or bought for a quid; that's valiant, but when every single tool/material you use for restoration is professional/expensive, of course you can see the difference. However: the de-yellowing process plays a good part in making the result look great, but as far as I know it only lasts a couple of years, after which the yellow parts will turn yellow again.

I agree. The model was new once and now it looks new again. But some might weather new models to look like the movie props. So pick your preference and go for it.
I don't think before looks right, the brownish colour doesn't work (it does for the Falcon), but neither does brand new. X-wings weren't brilliant white, more of a light grey. I think a quick spray in the right colour would look great.

The battle damage x-wing has a more grey tone to the plastic. I always liked that better when I was a kid.
If he's a modeler then yes, he can paint it to look like the actual stuff. He did a great restoring it to the original though.
I am 50 now but damn.. I had one of these and loved it when I was a kid. I had a great collection from way back.
I remember in 1977 I was 9 years old going to to Child World in Dedham, MA with my Mom's b/f driving me, and I had $10 and was so excited to get this X-Wing. I got there and they had a whole isle of TIE fighters, Millennium Falcons, Star Wars figures and it was crowded by other kids and their parents. I found the XWing and to my utter sadness it was like $25. I was so bummed out. But my Mom's b/f felt bad for me and said "here kid" and gave me the extra $15. I was soooo happy! 56 years later - here it is brand new!

I won that X-wing fighter as a kid in 1978! On the inside label of a big fruit juice can ( Hawaiian Punch I think ). Had to answer a skill testing math question and mail it in.

@@LinkiePup I have the same feeling about LEGO Star Wars, I am 90s kid so I grew up around LEGO System and I love the vibe around 1999-2002 LEGO sets, low detail really, sometimes weird color of the bricks but imo beats every set 2010+ :D This year as a Christmas present got myself Slave 1 7144 (Mando vibe) and I love it, guess I am a bit of AFOL now lol :)

Kenner made outstanding Star Wars toys. Proof right there that when companies merge/aquire/takeover others a core part of the original company is lost.
Imagine doing such a good restoration job that you improved the product from it's original state.
I am so used to you doing the low tech toys and machines that it was weird seeing you restore something with so many screws.
The patina from age certainly made it look more like a rebel fighter.
that's what I was thinking too; the finished restoration looks damn cool, don't get me wrong, but it puts it into the fresh clean look of episode 1, 2, 3.
Awesome job! Here's a tip for screws into plastic: gently turn the screw backwards, until the thread clicks onto the existing threads in the plastic, then screw in. Thus way you're not creating new threads or cross threading, etc.

I had a friend who had one of these when we were kids. I was awestruck just watching the toy being disassembled!!!
That was a better X-Wing rescue than even Master Yoda's.
Out of all the restoration channel that I've seen, this one is my favourite so far. The production is good and the way he cleans every single parts thoroughly is already a huge point for me. Not to mention, he also replaces the damaged parts with a new one, sometimes he makes it from scratch. Keep up the good job!
Restoration was great, don't get me wrong, but the "weathering" on the original/dirty X-Wing looked pretty cool too.

Yeah it looked way more authentic as it was. I would have been happy if he cleaned up the cockpit and left the rest!
I even think that the dirt was gone with the soap wash, but the “whitening” was too much
I thought the same, they’re far from perfect in the movie.
That’s why I roughed mine up in the dirt and broke that whiney-“authentic laser” sound and LED light real quick. (Especially after the ESB and it needed to go in the water ... ‘cause, you know, Dagobah?)

The lightsaber in the screwdriver drawer was such an awesome and subtle touch! I smiled when i caught that. Nice work, nice craftsmanship!
Brings back so many memories of when I was a kid. My escape from shitty home life was flying mine around and saving the galaxy. Now at 53 seeing these toys warms my heart. Great work! She looks beautiful

I should have you restore all of my original Star Wars ships! That was so impressive!
I learned how to restore toys over the lock down. Now it's my main hobby. Give it a shot with something cheap. Get something off ebay to learn and practice on. Then move on to your personal collection. Try Toy Polloi too. He's an excellent vintage toy repair man on youtube. Mostly 70's through early 90's. You'll be surprised how easy it is to fix some toys. You may have some of the materials lying around for other uses. Good luck!

I paint miniatures, sometimes on commission, and I'll be honest - that is a WAY bigger and thicker brush than I'd use for those thinner parts. Bloody impressive to see it work!

I was really hoping he would paint in the panel lines. I know that's not how the toy looked originally, but when there's that much detail in the white plastic it's amazing how much it pops with a bit of black in the nooks and crannies.

I had one of these and many others, my Mother sold them to my Stepfather's brothers kid's, I will always be angry about it. They were all mint and boxed I even had a slave one.

There’s something charming about seeing an old, grimy model of something that’s meant to be all beat up. Yet for the OG Star Wars fans that had these toys as kids, I can only imagine that feeling of nostalgia as the remember when they first opened the box
I had one of these in the early to mid 80's. I loved playing with my Star War's toys. I had the Hoth Base, an AT-AT, the X-Wing and many action figures that I stored in the Darth Vader storage unit. *Thank you to Rescue & Restore* for the care and affection you display towards these items. This video brought back some great memories that were stored away for many years. Almost got choked up dammit!
I'm just impressed all the pieces are there and the wings stayed open originally (had to prop mine open with checker pieces)
Just curious: what is that electric motor supposed to do but spin? It has a sprocket so I expect it was used to drive something but now it just turns?
Hi, it just spins and makes noise. It's suppose to sound like an space engine sound, sounds weird to me personally.
I think simulating the "X wing noise" only
The gear on the motor was mounted next to a small piece of flexible plastic. The gear would spin and rub that plastic, making a sort of laser sound.

Most of the original larger Kenner ships besides Slave 1 had this feature.
Replating that spring makes saying you pay attention to detail an understatement!

As my wife and I watched this great restore, my 3 year old daughter came into the room asking what was happening. We told her you were fixing it. At the end she shouted "IT'S READY TO FLY!" Great video.

I have to say watching this video was surprisingly satisfying, especially since I had the same model X Wing back in 1978 and it great seeing it restored back to it's former glory. You definitely have some serious craftsmanship there going on there and well done!
