The Mad Max Franchise took the cinema industry by storm when it was first released in 1979 and it continues on today with Furiosa: A Mad Max Story, a prequel to 2015’s Mad Max Fury Road. But how did this film come together? And how did it’s production differ from the previous entries? From contrived CGI controversies (go figure) to a 15-minute action sequence that took 78 days to film, let’s get into the production of Furiosa.

Are you going to see Furiosa in theaters?
Just bought the tickets for tomorrow with my dad who is fun fact as old as George Miller himself, both of us are die hard fans, super psyched.
Nope.
Yes would not miss it!
i did WITNESS in iMax. it was glorious... shed tears of joy. a Cinematic Masterpiece. A must see.
*I DID AND I LOVED IT*
Might go see it again
The fact that this movie was directed by an almost 80 year old man who also had Happy Feet and Babe in his filmography is insane. George Miller is a true artist and his versatility deserves so much appreciation
Totally agree! We have a whole video on him coming out next week!
@@FrameVoyager I hope you also have an behind the scene story of Mad Max Fury Road
@@15Candles I have some stuff for each of his films and for fury road in the script! But maybe at some point I'll go back and do a "production of fury road" video
@@FrameVoyager Fury Road's production was chaotic so I think it needs it's own video
These movies tend to use every single stunt driver in the Australia. George Miller is a saint of the Aussie film industry.
It's rare to see a franchise being that has been alive for decades and it's so far being handled by one director. I honestly don't know how the franchise could go if George Miller someday passed away. I couldn't imagine a Mad Max movie without Miller and that shows how special Miller is as an artist when no one could really replicate his style and success with this franchise
One of the creator died of a helicopter crash and you get Beyond The Thunderdome
It looked like Fury Road which is weird to see the complaints about CGI
I think people forgot what it looked like 😅
@@FrameVoyager it's been awhile for sure 😄😄
I watched Furiosa with my best friend, aware that the biggest complain was the more obvious CGI. When we left, neither of us saw anything wrong with said CGI. Truly, 1 of the best prequels ever made, and 1 of the best films of 2024!
@@MistaGify People were complaining about the trailer! It's ridiculous. There's a deliberate hate campaign against Furiosa.
@@ReggieBishop Actually, I too thought the trailer’s CGI was too conspicuous, ha ha!
Seriously though, what is up with Furiosa bombing?! As 1 industry insider complained about The Fall Guy bombing, “Audiences have been complaining about Hollywood’s lack of ideas for years, only to stay at home or go someplace else when a good original film comes out.”
I am glad people here are appreciating the film more. I watched a review from Critical Drinker, and he and his audience just did not fuck with the notion that Furiousa gets a Mad Max prequel all to herself. GOAT movie.
I don't understand why people don't like that she got a prequel 😅 like she was the co lead of mad Max fury road lmao
@@FrameVoyager Baffles me bro. I just hope they at least give it a chance and watch it y'know.
@@markgtown1 too many people upset at a strong female lead 😅
I’m annoyed by that guy and his audience. Used to watch his stuff but it seems that any time there is a hint of a female lead in the movie, he basically says it’s trash and his audience just goes along with it.
@@thedarkestfateful I went to watch the movie blind, and I had no idea it had this type of reception. Best to just spread the word amongst your friends and fam that it is indeed worth the watch.
Just saw it on IMAX. Wow...
same, even better than fury road imo
@@Snarknado5 did you enjoy the free tampons that came with the movie?
@@cornpop8570???
Same, wow just fucking wow
All CGI lmao😊
Just saw it and im going to see it again. One of the greatest prequels ever made. Just as good as Fury Road, for some things even better! The action is superbe, the cinematography is fire , the photography is god tier level and the visual effects are so damn good. The story is unique and it takes you from the start till the end. And acting is amazing from all the actors, as the music is! What a movie, best movie of the year and it's not even close. Miller never miss!
George, please, for the love of god, put those audition tapes online! I want to see her version of the "Mad as Hell" scene!
I really haven't had enough time to fully form an opinion yet, but I can honestly say that Fury Road PROBABLY has better action, but Furiosa's story just blows it out of the water. Not only is the main character just so much more investing, the reason you would be invested in this movie is because you care about Furiosa as a character. But the villain is better too! Immortan Joe was like a good bad guy, but Chris Hemsworth is just constantly chewing up every scene he's in and yet his character isn't just 2-dimensional like Joe, which is especially evident when they're on screen together in this film.
Agreed. It’s about 8 years too late for me now, but I wish I could have seen Furiosa before Fury Road. Seeing the two leads meet for the first time knowing what I know now would have been epic!
They are very different, Furiosa is a western on 15 years. The prequel makes Fury Road even better now.
@@H240909 I do agree that I think if you were to watch the two of the movies, you should watch Furiosa first and then Fury Road.
Fury road is basically just one big action set. Which especially works with furiosa as a narrative build up. Not to say furiosa doesn't have good action nor that fury road has no narrative function but they kind of just mesh together quite well.
Favorite movie of the year. Loved spotting all the different bikes yoo
There is not a problem with overreliance on CGI in the movie. I did spot some shots where the roto and comping is... not the best, and this makes it seem fake. But that is not an overreliance on CGI, it is simply bad roto and comping. I suspect that is due to budget and or time restraints rather then how the movie was made, as it seems like they mostly used the same process as in Fury Road.
Agreed
To be fair fury road has some bad roto as well.
@@snmcfadden It never stood out as much as it did in Furiosa for me
I love furiosa, but the CGI is more noticeable. Some shots are entirely CGI and sometimes they have cars and actors in the background entirely in CGI and it's noticeable. It just looks fake. For example when dementus drives up a hill in the back of a shot. It's not bad but it's sad to see when compared to fury road.
@@suryadnb I feel like you haven't watched fury road in a while. Because it is very noticeable. Especially the part when rictus is lifting the engine over his head towards the end.
Damn this movie was way better than I thought, what a ride. I can't wait until the mad max stand alone we will get soon enough George has already confirmed this in an interview
honestly furiosa has to be my favorite of all the mad max movies
very well made
Oh yeah 🤣
anyone worried about furiosa, watch the movie you'll get over it first 5 minutes. this just made fury road an epic, literally. furiosa makes it a 2 part movie, links all the movies and some of the game. tons of Easter eggs, like the whistle from thunderdome.
and yes, max is in the movie for a cameo which actually helps link the game (though the game needs a reboot with miller and his wife involved. but timeline goes furiosa, the game, fury road.........basically. like said game needs a reboot to totally link
I love the game but even Miller was disappointed with it. It’s a bastardized depiction of Miller’s original game setup.
It was cool seeing “chumbucket”
@@TheJ_G ya. But id rather have dog. Or gyrocopter guy or something. The game is basically a screwed up version of the comic story before fury road. Id rather see the game get rebooted with miller and his wife involved. Keep the game play n some stuff from the original game. And add to it. Throw in everything from the movies as dlc
🤣👎🏼
@@cornpop8570 obviously not a real mad max fan
Love these breakdowns! The quality, content, host... thanks and please, continue!
Appreciate it! It's nice with some of these larger productions when they release some bts footage prior to the movie release! I like to make these videos as supplements to going to see the movie!
This was such a labor of love. And it showed. I loved every minute of it. My only complaint was the recasting of the actor who played Slick in Fury Road as Scrotus. It was the only thing that would momentarily take me out of the experience. I told myself that Slick was the illegitimate son of Scrotus. That would be funny if it were true. Great vid!
Love your mad scientist backdrop!
People, save the movie. Go to cinema.
Went twice!
people are stupid, the movie looks great, and is great
The whole Stowaway sequence is the best part of the entire movie. A lot of it reminded of the first canyon scene from Fury Road where you see Furiosa and Max working together super well despite not knowing each other. The same happens in the Stowaway sequence with Jack and Furiosa though this time it’s much more insane and impressive. Their 78 days of shooting this really paid off.
Once you've seen Furiosa, you'll understand how tragic Fury Road really is.
Furiosa was awesome just saw it after work. Really hope they can get more going with someone who loves and cares, or if Miller has another in him

I love your videos! This is amazing.
Appreciate it!
Mad Max has always been a balancing act between creative world-building and REALISM. The issue with Furiosa is Miller leaned even harder into the use of CGI. He envisioned the shots in pre-production thinking through the lens of CGI rather than the simpler, more real, lens of curved-glass-on-a-box out with the actors, cars and landscape. There is no restraint for his 'camera.' It can go anywhere, at any speed, for any length of time, endlessly zooming in and out. This may sound like a great freedom but the result is cartoonish, filled with comic book cliches. He's in a supremely stunning landscape but CGIs the light, color, topography and completely paints out the sky in nearly every shot. The balance is off with every spec of reality computer 'enhanced.'

Hiring a actor that can’t drive for a character who’s kidnapped as a child and has to learn her way to survive is actually a good call
Mad Max presents such an incredibly unique stylized world. Furiosa expands the lore with world-building perfectly. Hopefully Max returns in the next movie
It was so good. Both of the movies were so so good. I hope there will be a third one.
Great great movie! Still had an unique flavor to Hollywood. But some parts, the plot and scenes fells rushed by production, probably not Miller's fault, cause he is a perfectionist...
I actually didn't love Furiosa immediately when I saw it last night but the more I think about it, the better it sits with me. I need to see it again.
I'm with you with this statement, the more I don't compare this with fury road, the better I thought of Furiosa.
Great movie. And one of the best franchises ever created
Insane! Just insane insanity
I loved it😍
Wait but you hadn't seen in at the time of writing/recording this video?
Furiosa? No, we haven't seen it before writing or making this video. But we're never really doing like a review of the film or the analysis of it, so there's really no point. Just telling the story of how the movie came together and behind the scenes type stuff that went into the production of the film. Sometimes we can get early screeners to films
oh man, imagine this as an anime by like a classic madhouse or studio 4c.
This as an anime would be awesome
@@FrameVoyagerWhat is an anime?
Let’s be honest. It’s very good but fury road looks more realistic.
Furiosa is a classic in my book.
This movie was really good.... too bad it completely bombed
6:56 Where the hell is this scene from? o_O
It's the blink-and-you-miss-it scene where Furiosa gets her driver's permit.
Training footage...
on mx4d it was super fun. must!

ITS QUADRUPLE A!!!
Wasn't Fury Road shot in Namibia instead of Australia ?
It was great 🍿🍿🍿
I love the sequences, but I never liked fury road, although in my childhood really loved watching mad max series with my dad
I love mad max, it made my childhood😢 kept praying in the theatre's for this to be good, it was disappointing :(( I cant believe it, chris hemsworth accent also made it more comedic, it was like he didnt even take it seriously... does he think he is acting for a comedy movie? smh... Im broken
Every time he smiled, laughed or joked it was like an alternative reality occurring. That's not on Hemsworth it's down to the wb execs who use their muscle to interfere with casting and steer the production to suit their agendas. You will never achieve greatness if your agenda is not solely to achieve greatness! This film needed more tweaking and polishing, it could've easily been a 9of10 instead it was released like so many video games are these days, half baked and buggy.
@@TottenPoncho Imagine complaining about Hemsworth performance and enjoying past Mad Max villains who wore assless chaps.
Wait Mad Max isn't in it. Oh.
I mean he is but...
The CGI was parts were really bad tho,
Best film since edge of tomorrow
Every else uses CGI, Marvel, DC, Star etc. this uses as much making it look unreal and ppl boo.
Thor 4: furiosa
The reason everyone is complaining about the CGI is because they are watching CZcams trailers with its new even more crappy bitrate. Scenes look completely different in these trailers on a 4k HDR TV.
Wait!! George Miller was put off by de-aging tech still had an uncanny valley effect, so they cast Anya Taylor-Joy, who has a natural uncanny valley effect because of how weird she looks? And George was fine with this? No wonder it bombed at the box office, and the movie was OK at best.

Still can't get my hrad around why the roads are "still" so smooth after years or decades that civilization collapsed? Might there still be "civil works" gangs running around fixing asphalt and concrete?
You do realize these roads dont see nearly the traffic that a normal road does in current times. Just a supply truck every day or so. Not constant and endless traffic 24 hours a day.
@@lockekappa500 that could possibly got something into it. I also realize that there's no maintenance being done on them and I'd imagine the environment had been eating into the concrete and asphalt without vehicles to clear the abrasive material by virtue of vehicle moving over them.
The real reason why De-aging technology with CGI wont work for Theron because Director George Miller though it could be way to expensive.
This movie already cost 170 million, most of that going to action set pieces. It would have probably cost another thirty million plus easy to do a deage and it still wouldn't look that great. Getting a younger actor just makes a lot more sense.
@@menghao737 on top of the fact charlize would probably cost more as well given that this is her second one of these and she's gotten a lot more leading roles in the last 9 years
Charlize is absolutely amazing, but I just don’t get why so many people wish she had been cast in this movie. There’s just no way it would have looked as good to have a de-aged version of an almost-50 year old actor playing a character that is clearly supposed to be a teenager for most of the movie. And it’s a lot of the same people who are complaining about the CGI in the movie.
The furiosa character situation isn't even in my list of things they should have done differently. For the budget, the level of underachievement here is stunning. Simple things to address: the casting and/or direction of demento character. The casting and/or direction, script and integration of Pretorian Joe character. Condensing the beginning of the film and using that time to show some of the battles that are skipped over at the end of the film. Making sure nothing feels rushed even if it hits 3hrs. With better character casting/direction the movie would race by it wouldn't be a problem. As it stands it's a 6/10 when it could easily have been a 9/10. MEDI-OCRE!! 😅
De-age all you want, for all the cost in the world, get it as convincing as you want, a 48 year old will simply not move like a teenager moves. You will end up with the problem the Irishman had, a young guy fighting like he is a 70 year old. Even Jackie Chan does not move like a young Jackie Chan. I'd much rather see a different actor play a role than trying to shoehorn and force a particular person into a role and why? Because they played them before? So what?
Here in India they butchered that 50 min long scene.
How?
15*
𝗦𝘂𝗯 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗲 ?
This video ends almost as abruptly as the film. It's a great film and worth seeing in theaters for the spectacle. But from a narrative perspective Fury Road gives you everything you need to understand the world. And with the ending you honestly walk away knowing as much leaving the theater as you did having seen Fury Road.
The film was unfortunately overly CGI'd. Looked very unconvincing and sometimes poorly composited. It definitely took me out of it.
Forget CGI. That 15 minute sequence is still better than anything from Fury Road.
Agreed. I think Fury Road is the tighter movie, but that 15min sequence is the best part of both films.
@@lockekappa500I like Fury Road more, but I can agree to this.
Ya gotta admit, she was a little Peggy Sue-ish. Some of the effects took me out of it every now and then.
wtf does that even mean
@@jucxoxit's just incel shit.

I’m sooooooo glad that they didn’t go woke with this one!!!
Well good thing it paid off with astounding box office success.
She should be cast in a live action female Rango adaptation.
To bad there it lead to failure
The real insane thing was making a Mad Max movie without Mad Max. OOF! They're not going to trust George Miller with a student film at this point.
You mean the script he had already written, that had already been read, that was already green lit by studios and producers, and that is obviously set in the "Mad Max world?" In other words, every single person involved in getting a movie to the screen was well aware the movie did not have Max in it. But so what? You're basically complaining that due to a lack of any other name for the world/fictional timeline to exist in, it is an issue to not have Max. If the movies were just called something else then what? Furiosa, a Wasteland story. 997 Furiosa. You could literally call it anything and then your complaint falls apart.
@@AveragePicker You're missing the point. The movie failed miserably because it wasn't a proper Mad Max movie. People just do not care about more chick-led action movies, clearly. In this environment of home movie streaming, you BETTER give the audience what they want, or it will end up like Furiosa, or the Marvels. The Trend is dead.
@Doomzdayxx Your antifemale niche is not actually that big of a demographic and it's a very narrow sighted view of movie performance as a whole.
@@AveragePicker Oh it's more than a small niche. Girls had no interest in the movie either. Guys want strong male action heroes to vicariously live through, and the ladies also want strong male action heroes. The real small niche are the ones that want girl boss movies. And not even those weirdos show up to support the product half the time. You have to give the people what they want. Class dismissed.
@@Doomzdayxx 🤦♂You've sent andrew tate money on more than one occasion haven't you
Loved it - way better than Fury Road !
It was OK. At this point I think we’ve seen enough of George Millers style. Truthfully I’d love to see Mel Gibson direct a Mad Max film. Great video💯
Feels like an apology video for the overdone post production that makes these shots look pure CGI and takes all the weight out of it. This film felt "MEDIOCRE". They even made something simple like a woman jumping on a horse or a motorcycle doing a 180 degree into CGI. Even the War rig scene was so dull Tom Burke didn't change his flat expression until the scene was almost over. Also barely any music during that scene. Just go re-watch Fury Road if you don't believe me.
The cinematography and colours are a bit lacking compared to fury road
Awesome movie, under appreciated, and underrated by a bunch of betas that can’t find a date and think it’s a womans woke power fest

The movie flops! It seems the modern audience don't want any girl boss movies any more!
Literally has nothing to do with it. Female led films have been some of the top films in the last year.

There is a huge problem with Furiosa….. the target audience of fanboys are presumed to be okay with a mad max movie without max. Same with Garfield without Jon Arbuckle. This is a huge miscalculation. I don’t know what these story writers and studios are smoking. George Miller had the opportunity to cast Jodie Comer, the best actor of her generation, as Furiosa... and he chose Anya Taylor Joy?! Really?!
Jodie Comer is great! But Anya Taylor-Joy makes more sense to me for this roll based on all the other roles she's done. She's got a little bit more of that darker edge to her that works well for this role imo.
I just saw the movie and trust me, Anya was absolutely perfect for Furiosa. Even in the third act, she sounds a little bit like Charlize Theron
Joy made a great performance.
Anya is better actress, more Charlize look-alike and far more star power
Joy actually did pretty amazing I will say!
Furiosa was incredibly boring and dragged something terrible... sorry but just awful compared to the others. The CGI looked very bad too in many scenes. Fury Road did everything better! Even Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome is a better film I think.
How is it a mad Max movie if it has no mad Max? I'll pass.
