This is no "girl boss" movie. She starts off going on instinct. Then, she goes through an apprenticeship (with who becomes her only friend, her only family. I felt that when they were forehead nuzzling or whatever you call it).
She takes hits, she doesn't physically kick anyone's ass, she only outsmarts some of them. In short, Furiosa earns what she becomes.

@kirstyc2176 If it was "girl boss" at all, it was old school "girl boss". I felt that character earned her capabilities. She was not some sort of unstoppable force.
The problem is; modern Hollywood has conditioned audiences to just reject characters which might even give off the vibe that they might be just that. Some great films with awesome female leads will be overlooked because of all of the junk we've grown accustomed to having forced down our throats. It's unfortunate but understandable.

I was shocked by how bleak and brutal it went. You really felt the hopelessness that this world brought upon. Chris Hemsworth acting here also reminded me that I prefer him playing the bad guy over the comedic hero. He just brought a sense of showmanship into these roles that glossed over the sinister distruction. It's such a heavy film, but also one that knew that revenge, while satisfying is never a cure.

Back when George Miller thought up Fury Road and Furiosa, he had hundreds of sticky notes detailing each shot of both films and Furiosa was originally supposed to be a 3D Anime/Animated Movie, and Miller translated each sticky note very faithfully in both films, so when I saw some of the odd shots or editing choices, I then thought about how it would look animated and it all made sense, same goes for the CGI, You can get away with more crazy stuff in animation, so it would make a lot of sense for the harder stuff to not translate to live action well.

Fury Road was advertised as being super practical that there's been almost a weird "actually a ton of CGI" counter push, however I'd like to state that I still think it's perfectly fair to praise Fury Road as a very practically filmed movie, as so much of its CGI is adding a sky box, making a desert more desert-y, a canyon more compact and canyon-y. CGI to enhance a scene is different than CGI to completely comprise a scene. Outside the obvious sandstorm CGI, Fury Road as a masterpiece in stunt work and practical effects. Some color grading and smart editing that may use CG to safely overlay a exploding truck next to dozens of cars and people (two real shots but combined as one) is exactly what CG is meant for.

If you look at behind the scenes videos, even the cars driving through the sandstorm was done for real, with the sandstorm added over it - and the storm is so well stylised and visually sumptuous that it doesn't take you out. When you see Fury Road and Furiosa side by side, it's hard to compare. In Furiosa I could almost spot every transition between 'real car' and 'CG car' even within a single shot - I don't think there's a single moment in Fury Road where I'm taken out of the film by a full CG car.

      Long Rant incoming:
Not really. Furiosa was a very bloated film. Pacing slowed by its very pointless first chapters which are up so much time that none of the interesting characters got a chance to develop or interact in any meaningful way. Aka Dementus. There is only the silhouette of a tragic character but again no real substance because the useless filler acts that ate up so much screen time for absolutely no reason.
If we had just cut the whole of act 1, nothing would have drastically changed. And instead we got a script of Furiosa actually sacrificing bits and pieces of herself to rise to the rank of Imperator, just for the sake of vengeance would be so much more interesting than the time skip.
Then there is Praetorian Jack. He was the most useless addition in the entire movie. His motivation and interest is absolutely absent. He has a very one dimensional stoic personality. Who is he? How did he becomes Praetorian? Why does he want to help Furiosa? What does she teach Furiosa about road combat? Who knows because guess what, time skip.
Unlike Fury Road which was a very tightly written script where every setup had a payoff. For example: In Fury Road Max is forced to give his blood as a human blood bag and when Furiosa asks for Max's name, he only grunts as he doesn't want to be friends or chums, he is only doing what he needs to survive. By the end, Max willingly gives his blood, and his name. Similarly, the movie starts with a race away from the citadel which was seen as a prison but then it turns into a race towards the citadel as the symbol of hope. Meanwhile, Furiosa was just action for action's sake. The script was just an excuse for fight sequences.
And Anya Taylor Joy's Furiosa was very underwhelming. All her character seems to do is scowl. "Hey girl why you sneaking?" *Scowl* "Hey, who are you?" *Scowl* "I will teach you the way of the road warrior! *Scowl* "I am the man that murdered your mother. *Scowl* "Here have some food." *Scowl*
And the ending was just so disappointing. Furiosa just gets superpowers after she loses her arm.

It’s weird for everyone to figure out that George Miller never makes the same movie twice. Even all the Mad Max films, while sharing the same world and themes, have nothing to do with each other in style, content, or purpose. Who even expected this to be anything like Fury road? The Road Warrior was the sequel to Mad Max, with the same actor, and it was a totally different character. The first movie wasn’t even set in the apocalypse. Just bad times.

Another good title would have been "Furiosa: a WASTELAND SAGA". Including Max's name in it is just bizarre. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Furiosa character and can't wait to see it tomorrow - I'm just saying, calling it a "Mad Max" saga makes no sense.

The pacing, the titled number part, the time-lapsed tree growing in the hair on the side of the citadel, getting the gatekeeper job, and more made for a different movie.
    And it's good.
Dementus' whole group seemed somewhat Roadwarrior-esque to me like Humungous group. And having that "rogue" group within Dementus' group that went after the war rig right away was interesting. And seeing that large group with Dementus but it seemed so chaotic at gas town.
The 40 day wasteland war, the bullet farm, and gas town, all of it left so much destroyed. That's a lot to clean up by the time Fury Road comes in.

It's unfortunate, but it bears repeating: 90% of the CGI in hollywood nowadays isn't done by the same professionals who brought to life movies like Fury Road a decade ago. The vast (and I mean VAST) is done by outsourced and underpaid Indian or Bangaladeshi VFX workers, and it shows in the quality. In Furiosa's case the VFX was done by a company called DNEG, which merged with an Indian firm in 2014.

Something about the directing and action design in this movie just screamed such a confidence in their craft that I couldn't help but love every action sequence. This is such an expertly made movie, even the over the top and sometimes shoddy cg still adds to the surreal nature of the movie. This movie also very much reminded me of the OG Mad Max in a lot of ways, with it's slower but more personal story. Also the most Australian man looking man ever as a love interest for Furiosa was just hilarious to me for some reason. I think the blocking for this movie is some of the best I've ever seen. I haven't seen a movie perfectly exemplify "blocking" this well since well Fury Road. Something about this movie reminds me of old Hollywood "blockbusters" pre Jaws.
