Mommy (2014) was a surprising masterpiece and the best of the month. But if you want a movie that's family-friendly and won't stress you to death, Petite Maman is the recommendation.

  • @Arlyn7
    @Arlyn7 Před 21 dnem +122

    Just saw TV Glow and wow, it was nothing that I expected. I was anticipating just a bit of fun sci-fi horror but what I got was an allegory that was deeply personal to me.
    From the moment they introduced The Pink Opaque I knew the director loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It only became more apparent the longer I watched because it’s in everything-the font used for the show, the themes, the language (big bad), the queer subtext-the plot is one big reference to the end of Buffy season 5 and the beginning of 6. They even named a character Tara. Then Amber Benson shows up for a cameo!
    Buffy is such an important show to queer people. Willow and Tara were the first lesbians I saw on tv, the first gay people at all. TV Glow absolutely captured what it’s like to see yourself in a show, to see yourself really for the first time. But also how it feels to not get to see yourself fully realized or fully happy.
    I could talk for hours about how right TV Glow got it, how wonderful it is to find shows like Buffy and just how painful it can be watching the characters you love try (and sometimes fail) to fight for a happy ending.

    Evil Does Not Exist does count as a 2024 movie since international movies takes months to be distributed into American theaters.
    For example, Perfect Days wasn’t released in the United States until early of this year.

    • @AgsmaJustAgsma
      @AgsmaJustAgsma Před 21 dnem

      American movies occasionally take their time to arrive in many european countries. Here in Portugal it's not as terrible as it used to be (i.e. a blockbuster movie coming out between three to six months after its original release), but there are instances nowadays that get downright ridiculous, and it's not just the holiday movies that are pushed to January because of the Oscar season. Dream Scenario will only come out in Portugal this week, after months of arriving to other markets drop by drop. It's an unique situation, for most A24 releases arrive shortly after their wide release in the US.

    • @hydqjuliilq27
      @hydqjuliilq27 Před 21 dnem

      It wasn’t even distributed to Japanese theaters until this year, it was pretty much just at Venice for 2023. Perfect Days was shown in Germany and Japan, its home countries, in 2023 and probably had some limited screenings in the US for the Oscars, so I’d say it’s 2023 while Evil Does Not Exist is 2024.

    • @backseatentertainment
      @backseatentertainment Před 17 dny

      I run into that issue too. For instance, "Am I Ok?" had its premiere on Max today, but it was actually made in 2022. I consider it a 2024 movie since it's being widely released now. Many movies, like "The Bikeriders," "The Last Stop in Yuma County," and "Hit Man," were made in 2023 but are getting their major releases in 2024, so I count them as 2024 movies too.

    I had never heard of The Swimmer until I saw that you watched it on Letterboxd, watched it the other night and have found a new all-time favorite. What an incredibly strange, ridiculous, disturbing, silly, hilarious, nightmarish time. Highly recommend to anyone who doesn’t already trust Karsten’s word on this one.
    Another all-time favorite I just watched for the first time was The Third Man, which I’d always heard was a noir classic but never knew was actually hilarious and bizarre? The entirely zither-based soundtrack? The over-abundance of Dutch angles that somehow always work? Orson Welles somehow being a creep and a ham at the same time? That incredible, hysterical last shot working as a complete inversion of the typical Hollywood ending? Absolutely amazing

    I watched The Swimmer last year and I remember thinking it was so interesting because, on the one hand, it’s a surrealist fantasy where a guy swims through time via various pools, but, on the other, it use the physical reality of how it would actually feel (warm sun, then colder and clammier, etc.) if he really somehow did it.

    hard disagree with rating to Ripley netflix show over the movie. I felt the show didn't allow you to connect with Ripley at all whereas in the film, when dicky is laying into tom on the boat you want to die inside. the movie imo makes you feel so guilty as Tom goes along given how far you can connect to him whereas the netflix version made me feel nothing for him.

    • @theonetheonlychi61
      @theonetheonlychi61 Před 20 dny +1

      The Talented Mr. Ripley is such an alluring movie. Jude Law's Dickie is so charming that you could see how one would become infatuated with Dickie's persona and lifestyle. And Matt Damon's Tom is seemingly easygoing and friendly in a way that disarms any initial suspicions you might have about him, and you can see that this is how Tom gets away with conning people. None of this is in Ripley because Ripley takes a much colder approach, and it leaves me wondering why anyone would let Andrew Scott's Tom into their home in the first place when he's so stilted and awkward when they meet.

    Alright! Here's what I watched,
    Mad Max: Fury Road (10/10) - _After going through such a hellish production George Miller was able to craft what is hands down one of the best action movies of all time. The sheer amount of jaw dropping stunts and breathtaking cinematography is awe inspiring to say the least. Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy were excellent considering the behind the scenes feud they went through during production. Fury Road also does visual storytelling better than almost any action movie I've ever seen with underlying themes of trust, hope and redemption. It's truly a perfect movie in every regard._
    Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (9/10) - _My expectations were through the roof with this one and I'm happy to say that it was amazing. I love when a sequel/prequel forges it's own path and doesn't try to imitate it's predecessor, Furiosa is not Fury Road 2.0 and that's exactly why it works. Its slower paced, it's more personal, it takes its time with the world building all while having brilliant action set pieces that the franchise is known for. Furiosa made me way more invested in the world of Mad Max than any movie prior to this, all while giving that 'build-up' that made Fury Road even better on a re-watch. This honestly is my favorite movie of the year so far._
    Speed (9/10) - _Fury Road made me wanna watch more adrenaline pumping action flicks and I finally got around watching this classic. One of my pet peeves is when a movie takes place in a moving vehicle and in the case of Speed, a bus that will explode if it goes below 50. Such a simple yet brilliant concept for an action movie and director Jan de Bont executed it perfectly. The moving vehicle creates a constant state of urgency, there's no time to sit and think which makes for an 'edge of your seat' kinda experience. The performances are also really solid all around and although there may be flaws with the technical aspects of the movie but no doubt it's a great watch and one of my favorite 90s action classic._
    Mad Max: Fury Road, Black and Chrome version (N/A) - _Its basically the same movie just in b&w. I'd definitely recommend watching it as it provides a different viewing experience. Although I still prefer the coloured version._
    Solo Leveling, Season 1 (7.5/10) - _Good power fantasy with decent characters and a great soundtrack. Surprisingly also has a good amount of blood._
    Well that's it lol.

    Didn't get the chance to go to the cinemas enough this month but I took my boyfriend to see Nausicaa (in my quest to show him every ghibli movie). He hated it. Too many giant bugs. I had to cover his eyes at the end when they all lift her up with their tentacle things

    4:30 As someone who recently watched War for the planet of the apes last month, I gotta disagree, its the best in the franchise. The cinematography and score feel truly realized compared to dawn. How dark the film can get given its themes and settings is jaw dropping and emotional. Yes, I feel they spent too much time in the camp, but it was needed to push Casear away from his vengeance and become truly selfless. 9/10 easy.

    I saw the tv glow was genuinely so confusing and unsettling to me. I totally was picking up the queer vibe, but I just didn’t know why I was supposed to believe the girl that was tweeking abt burying herself. Bc it felt wayyyy too much like she might be on drugs. Just felt like a lot was going on. I should really watch it again, but I don’t want to 💀 not cus it’s bad, it’s just really sad.

    Started the month with Godzilla Minus One. Incredible movie, absolutely lives up to the hype.
    Next, I watched Godzilla x Kong The New Empire. Incredibly stupid movie. Loved it, better than Godzilla vs Kong.
    Next, I watched Dune Part 2. These movies just aren't for me. There's a lot of great things about both of them, but I really struggle with following the plot. I want to like it but I just can't make sense of the edit, it feels to me like stuff just. Happens for no reason.
    Next, I watched Ghostbusters Frozen Empire. Enjoyable enough, but it was very messy. Felt like several episodes of a cartoon sloppily edited together to fill 2 hours.
    Next, I watched Elemental. It was better than I expected. All the marketing looked very generic to me, but the story felt very personal in a way I really enjoyed.
    Next, I watched The Fall Guy. I loved it. Don't have much else to say, it's a good time.
    Lastly, I started to watch the original Mad Max but I was kinda tired and really couldn't get into it. Might give it another shot this month, might just skip to Fury Road. We'll see.
    Also throughout the month, I've been rewatching Star Wars for a weekly movie night. This month, we covered Return of the Jedi through The Force Awakens, and I watched the Tartakofsky Clone Wars and Rogue One on my own time.
    Return of the Jedi was good but definately the worst of the trilogy.
    The Phantom Menace was pretty good aside from the racism.
    Attack of the Clones was really good aside from the Anakin and Padme scenes, which are the worst scenes in all of Star Wars if you ask me.
    Clone Wars is fine, there's some fun stuff in there, there's also some pretty pointless stuff in there. I'm glad I watched it but I don't see myself coming back to it.
    Revenge of the Sith is definately the best of the prequels, an actually pretty good movie.
    The Force Awakens is a really good start to the trilogy, though the sequels don't quite successfully follow through on a number of things it sets up.
    Lastly, Rogue One was just kinda fine. I feel like the characters aren't developed enough to really care. The 3rd act is great but the build up doesn't do enough for me. I'd love if more of the cast got prequel shows like Andor. More buildup towards this movie will make it a lot better.
