challengers gave me a nagging feeling, like why aren't more films like this? with the infinite possibilities of film we just get generic caricatures of proven genres. a good film needs to be a lil divisive, as it seems to be. such a great fuckin time!
When I was 15, I was about to go on a 30+ day canoe trip far north away from any cell towers or civilization. My dad showed me deliverance a few days before I left…
RE the needle drops in Civil War: in a nutshell I believe that Garland intentionally chose tracks that would almost trivialise the conflict we were witnessing (Say No Go is the clearest demonstration of this).
We were watching events from the perspective of the photojournalists, who themselves repeatedly took the danger of the firefights for granted, and were portrayed as thrill seeking adrenaline junkie types. The song choices felt like what might have been playing in the head canon of these characters. I really believe that Garland was making a statement about the psyche of the journalists with these choices, and to go one step further, was intentionally treating the danger of the conflict with the same apathy that many have toward conflict happening far across the world. We’re so used to images of violence from conflict that even when it’s happening on domestic soil we still can’t help but not take it seriously.
Actually think these choices really elevated the film and what it had to say!
I totally agree with this take and I felt similarly when I saw it, I thought they were intentionally clashing tracks chosen to show the dissonance between the characters attitudes and the situations they were in
The needle drops were one of my favrioute aspects of the film to be honest.

That could be true, but I read something else online. I believe I've read that the music was used pure as a fuction to make the viewers unsettled. Because the music doesn't fit with the imagery, the viewer would feel uncomfortable.
@@jaspermeulendijks4033 I believe both takes are true - it’s definitely unsettling to see such realistic violence scored by lighthearted needle drops - it really shows how far the characters (and maybe we the audience) have drifted from the reality of what we’re seeing, we’re desensitised and unsettled simultaneously
Agreed, Challengers is my fave of the year too (so far). I can't remember the last time a movie hooked me like that, had me gasping and giggling and literally clutching my face in anticipation. So special. I was just sat there grinning when the credits rolled. Definitely need to see again, but most fantastic on a first watch for sure.
Absolutely loved Challengers and Josh O'Connor just became my new favorite actor!

Fight Club was important because it was a story for regular men that want to change their lives. It was something new and impactful for viewers. Pulp Fiction was an exposure of the forgotten pop culture to a new generation. Meanwhile, Challengers is a pretty good movie (from what I heard - I'm playing on seeing it) but no one is saying this film will start a new trend. It's a love story set in a sport for rich. I may be wrong (I am just a human) but I think Challengers' biggest impact will be its reception from viewers and critics. Have a nice day.
I knew going in what happens in "Tokyo Story" and it still absolutely reduced me to tears in a way no movie ever has before or since. It's actually perfect.
I rewatched The Worst Person in the World this month, and I liked it even more the second time around! I really cared for the characters this time around, the main actors did so good. Lovely movie ❤
Also watched The Favourite which I enjoyed a lot. The Lobster wasn't my kind of thing, and I was taken aback how dark that movie was. I was more in tune with The Killing of a Sacred Deer (though of course, the set-up is also pretty dark haha), but the plot kinda drags a little... The Favourite was the first Lanthimos movie I truly liked, great film! Fantastic period film, amazing production. And the acting was excellent, especially by Emma Stone, Olivia Colman and Nicholas Hoult
THE King Kong movie is, I believe inarguably, Peter Jacksons' 2005 monster mash with Jack Black, Adrian Brody, Naomi Watts, and the monkey king himself Andy Serkis
I watched the Alien 1979 for the first time in theaters, since AMC rereleased it for its 45th anniversary. Beautiful, it felt awesome watching a classic for the first time in theater. I was once reminded how much of a privilege it is to be able to consume art like this.

I'm not a cinephile but I really loved "Tokyo Story". I think causal viewers would avoid a foreign black and white film but I really recommend it.
The Challengers/Jungle Book pairing reminds me of one of my own personal experiences of tonal whiplash. In the same day (and for the first time) I watched Encanto and followed that up with Princess Mononoke.

Oh! And, the needle drops in Civil War all had to do with the drums. The drums of war, the drumming of a finger on a shutter. IDK how to explain it better than that, it's just instinctive.

Needle-drops were, in my opinion, phenomenal addition. They were supposed to make you feel like a solider on war after seeing something brutal. You're trying to kinda light your mood, so you don't find yourself in despair. Also, THOSE SONGS WERE BANGERS. In my opinion, the movie was amazing. Have a nice day.

I don't think I'm smarter than anyone who didn't enjoy the movie. People who think that the movie didn't say enough explicitly about American politics or whatever they expected from it objectively either completely missed several essential and intentional implications the film makes, or noticed them and are too immature to feel their significance.
This is not about enjoying the movie, I'm not blaming you for saying that because my original comment lacked substance and context. Enjoyment, how much you care about what happens in a movie, is entirely subjective and valid element of a review. Substance, what a movie actually contains, is much more objective. Its frustrating to see people criticize a movie that they didn't understand, again my first comment was a petty and non-constructive outlet of that frustration.
This conversation is more effective at describing the substance that the movie contains than I would be in a youtube comment, if you like cinema in general and care to watch it I think its worthwhile.

@@notonate69 I understand what you’re saying. I suppose I was frustrated as well since that’s all I hear as far as pushback; so not to say you specifically had nothing intelligent to say. Such is the time of internet discourse. For the record, I thought it was quite decent (65%, 3.5/5), I just didn’t love it like some did. The intent of the film made sense to me, I just felt it lacked some cohesion in storytelling that I was hoping for. After a second watch in the cinema some itched at me further, while others went away. I disagree with Karsten a lot of the time, which is why I found it interesting that we had many similar perspectives on a generally polarizing film. Take care.

this may be controversial to say, but I think that Peter Jackson’s King Kong is the definitive Kong film. Yes, it is a bloated film, and quite messy at parts, but the scale, the production design, the empathy given to Kong helps it stand out.
Peter Jackson's film is the True Remake. Made out of love with Peter Jackson even giving money from his pocket to make this film's modern audiences feel adventure and emotions, just like Jackson felt while watching the original one.

Your thoughts on "Deliverance" mirrored mine, Karsten. The first time I watched it, I had only heard of the "Duelling Banjos" scene, so was expecting something relatively lighthearted. Needless to say, I was NOT expecting things to escalate quickly! 😱
Tokyo Twilight is the Ozu movie that broke me out of my samey reactions to Ozu, that one is incredible, similar to his filmography in all the right ways with some extra special sauce
Breakers Roar during the forest fire in Civil War ate all the way up! So impactful. I NOTICED YOU REPEATED THAT SCENE over and over during the part you shaded the needle drops and I just cannot stand for that

Your take on Civil War makes is spot on. This movie felt like wandering about rather than following a story. This made it less profound but on the flipside made the events unpredictable and exciting.
I loved the film, but as a fan of Alex Garland's work I knew it would be much more of a "vibe film". But I understand your opinion.

Halfway through, La Chimera literally gave me a full jaw drop, the plot direction and darkness totally shocked me. Late Night with the Devil, Wild Things, whoops sorry I mean Challengers, Monkey Man, La Chimera, it's nice to get some good movies in early in the year. Seeing Spiderman 3, Civil War, and We Grown Now still thos week lol.
I think the needle drops in Civil War show how agreeable the experienced characters are in certain scenes, like right after a shootout they're just viding with Say No Go in the background, it's just a normal day at work for them, and by the end Jesse has basically become lees character with a pretty chill song playing in the background when something terrible happens in front of her eyes

With Civil War I actually really enjoyed it's complete apoliticalness. As a leftist, I think we're really used to the term being co-opted by centrists (which is by definition a political stance), or as an excuse to not act politically at all. I think we can be political people AND consume genuinely apolitical works that simply makes the point that *yes* we are still violent creatures
But the “we are violent creatures” point is in a hundred of other movies, its such an uninteresting point for Garland to make

the jungle book diss was UNCALLED FOR
I just watched Gondry's "The Science of Sleep" last night, under the influence, and I found it really interesting. Not because it was perfect, but because it did a lot of interesting things, especially visually and with the way it tells the story, but the main character never "got to me".
Challengers is genuinely brilliant
Deliverance book is really good too!

What was so awful about the Godfather crowd?
@@Arawn505 I saw Alien in theaters last night and I just didn’t find it interesting and didn’t care for the characters. Dazed and Confused was also in theaters and that was super fun.
Where to begin with the crowd? Everyone around me talked throughout it, the person behind me had a key on their wrist that jangled around and she never got rid of it, film bros making it obvious that key moments were coming up (i had never seen it up until then so it was annoying knowing something was going to happen), people kept dropping heavy items like phones, and, this is my own personal thing i guess (though my gf agreed this was weird and she had seen it in theaters before) but the crowd treated the film like a comedy? They laughed at many moments that I read as tragic. I get there were some funny moments, but there was a lottttt of laughing.
It just felt everyone there thought because it was such an old and iconic movie that everyone there had seen it, and that because of that they can get rid of all theater etiquette.
@@dir.byliam Aw, that really sucks. That you have the chance to see a great movie like this (one with beautiful cinematography) on the big screen, but then have the crowd around you behave so annoying. At least you could still appreciate the movie, I suppose (based on your score)

Peter Jackson’s King Kong captured the beauty and tragedy of kong. Very well acted and shot film. Definitely worth a watch or two
when it comes to civil war, i actually really liked the political vagueness it has. there’s one scene where it’s mentioned that lee, kirsten dunst’s character, had her breakout by photographing the “antifa massacre”. given that that’s the language we’re using today, i’m guessing the story takes place in 20-30 years. i think that’s the perfect way of looking at the film itself. it’s speculative fiction depicting a possible event happening in two decades. given how much has changed since 2000, how no one back then could’ve predicted what would’ve become the policial landscape, how technology that wasn’t even around has shaped the way we engage with society itself… i think it’s not fair to say anything that happens in civil war is “unlikely”, because if you were to explain to people in 1999 what 2024 is like, they’d probably find it hard to believe. especially with the state of journalism and how people share information, there’s NO WAY to predict what’s going to happen. ever. so saying “oh it’s unlikely that california and texas will be allies” is kinda bonkers to me because it was unlikely that someone like trump would have the capacity to become president _and yet…_

Kong Skull island hit the balance of goofy and serious perfectly, the newer ones just seem too marvel-ey. Also whenever a megabudget action movie features the pyramids as a setpiece you know they ran out of ideas.

After seeing _Godzilla Minus One,_ I appreciated having a Godzilla flick where you don't simply not need to care about the human characters, you literally can't. They're all so completely uninteresting that it helps you buy in to the monster fighting action.

🍿 Loved the weird concept of Dream Scenario but what they did with it in the second half of the film was eh… meh.
🍿 I _really_ need to watch The Host and Memories of Murder! 🫣 Both are on my watchlist for centuries, and still haven’t got around to watching it.
🍿 I genuinely _miss_ watching Ozu’s films. The only four films of his that I’ve seen are Tokyo Story, Tokyo Twilight, Early Spring, and The Flavor of Green Tea over Rice, and even though his films deal with emotional struggles and all of that, the films are never heavy and strangely comforting somehow. 🫢

King Kong Escapes is amazing and stupid and a ton of fun. If you haven't seen it give it a look.
the old King Kong is definitely THE King Kong movie. 2005 is a nice reimagining though.

Why give Martian 3.5/5? It seemed like you had nothing but praises for it and yet Godzilla got the same rating and that movie had issues.
Here's what I watched in April,
Kung Fu Panda 4 (5/10) - _Probably the blandest movie I've seen so far this year and it makes me kinda sad since I really love this series. The character designs and the animation are good but storywise it feels like a much worse version of Kung Fu Panda 2._
Mad Max (7.5/10) - _Solid revenge thriller with really good practical stunts made for a very little budget. It does have its issues mainly the dated look, average acting and in all honesty, it feels the least like a Mad Max film but overall its a good directorial debut from George Miller._
Mad Max The Road Warrior (8.5/10) - _One of those sequels that are better than its predecessor in pretty much every way this time with a much tighter story and a simple, easy to follow objective that keeps you invested. Great 80s action flick._
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (7/10) - _Despite the studio interference which led to Miller leaving the project halfway through and the fact that it feels like two entirely different stories taped into one, I actually kinda like it. Its definitely the weakest of the series but far from a bad one._
Shōgun, Episodes 8-10 (9.5/10) - _Not gonna lie, I'm still craving for more but I do loved the way the story wrapped up. It was such a calm series, nothing too dramatic or climactic (not that I dislike that either) just a really well written story with a lot of thought put into it. In a nutshell, Shōgun felt like a long game of chess that spoke louder in its quieter moments. Let's hope the success of Shōgun leads to more James Clavell's novel adaptations._
What If...?, Season 2 (6/10) - _It's one of those shows where the less you take it seriously the more you're gonna enjoy it. Just like season 1 it had a few good episodes here and there but overall it's not very consistent._

I started the month with The Nice Guys. I absolutely loved it, I'm shocked I hadn't heard of it until this past month.
Next I rewatched Star Wars A New Hope. It hasn't been that long since my last rewatch, so I don't have much to add. It's Star Wars, of course it's great.
I finished off the month with rewatching Empire Strikes Back, which I haven't seen in over a decade. It wasn't my favorite as a kid for whatever reason, it probably is now. It really holds up.
I forget if I finished it this month or last month, but I also watched the Disney+ Percy Jackson show. I was extremely underwhelmed with it. It's probably more accurate than the movie, but it was extremely bland. Very much just a Disney live action adaptation of the book, and nothing more
