New exhaust change the flow characteristics of the engine!
if the bike bogs which i think we heard or pops coming off the throttle it indicates a lean condition and you will need to retune the carb with a vacuum gauge and may need to go up a jet size or 2 on the pilot jet to resolve the issue.
running a bike to lean can burn a hole in the piston a good indicator is the spark plug you are looking for a light coffee colour to dark brown. whitish indicates to lean and black brown to rich.
You may also want to do a tappet check/ adjustment before retuning the carb idle circuit.
You should be able to pull the throttle from idle to wide open without the engine hesitating or bogging.

Hey is there any chance you mind giving me some advice? I have a klr650 2004 and I recently installed a mossy exhaust made for the klx600 and I have an air box mod and the 20 cent mod with the washer under my stock needle. My stock main jet is a 148 I have a 150, 155, and a 160. I also have a 45 pilot jet. What jets would you recommend I try?

This said here is my take on carb setting and i hope this helps you in your pursuit of a best setup.
There is no quick fix especially when modifications have taken place.
Also the base parameters such as float level, standard jet sizing and the vacuum should be known.
Increasing air flow to the carb decreases the negative pressure [measured as vacuum] produced by the piston down stroke, this is the air travelling through the carb is more but the vacuum produce is less. Meaning less fuel is drawn through the carb and thus leaning the mixture.
Equally a larger bore exhaust pipe allows the hot gases to move slower than that of a smaller diameter pipe so having a bigger pipe isnât always advantageous and with all these things its about compromise.
So what is the aim? If its all out power and top end, bottom end grunt or something in-between.
Diagnoses
CV style carbs have essentially 4 stages and so to find out where the issue / issues lay it is required to divide the throttle pull into 4 equal portions in degrees. So for the purposes of this explanation we will assume that the throttle lever as 180degrees of travel and we mark the throttle at 45, 90, 135 and 180 degrees.
Each 45 degree segment now represents each stage of carburation and now we can find where an issue occurs and where what part of the jetting we need to change.

I would go richer on the pilot jet first as this enriches the entire throttle pull and set it up on a vacuum gauge there are plenty of videos that show tuning the idle circuit on a carb as a single carb bike balancing is not an issue.
If you have to go more than 3 turns out on idle circuit than you need a bigger pilot jet.
The other issue is fuel. Depending on where you are in the world will depend on which jets you need to increase over stock.
So bikes pre 2006 on stock everything will need to go up one pilot jet setting for
E5 fuel or 5% ethanol
E10 -E15 2 sizes
and have a vacuum tune on the idle circuit.
My last point is how often do you get to flat out full throttle and achieve revs in the top 10% and hold it there? If its all the time then you need a more powerful bike! Not main jet changes.
So to answer the initial question and without knowing everything I really need to know.
I would remove the washer and go bigger on the pilot jet 1- 2 sizes over stock and block the mod to the air box, retune the idle circuit with a vacuum gauge this should allow the bike to pull cleanly through the full rev range without any bogging when the throttle is snapped to full open.
From there it a journey of changing one thing at a time and see what effect it has each engine is subtlety different and so what works on one engine should work on another but because of different net tolerances in metal expansion contraction, heat dissipation absorption each engine has to be tuned to itself.
Not the answer you were expecting I bet But I hope it helps you in your understanding of what you are trying to achieve

@Fat Freddy not essential for carbs but it does help reduce the amount of time diagnosing. The graphs show where there is a reduction in power and if it has the capability to monitor and meter fuel and air flow characteristics then adjustments can be determined easier but it can still be a suck and see experience. but again by the time your running a dyno professionally you should already know the how and the why about getting an engine to tune in a certain fashion.
This is why injection has become the go to for manufactures and race teams plug and play technology.
The best way to tune carburetors in my opinion is with an OÂČ sensor up the exhaust. This will give you the exact combustion rate and so you'll know if your running lean or rich. That's where a synonym run or two is very helpful.
I have a '14 KLR650. It bogs a little when first fired up/cold. I'm guessing that's normal though, right? Also, I live at high altitude (Denver, CO).
Also, was wondering if, besides weight, there are any other advantages to installing an aftermarket exhaust? Some places I read that it doesn't increase HP or anything, so just wondering if this is more for aesthetics and sound; other places I read that I does increase the HP, but not noticeably, so just wondering your take on this.

the heat shroud on the back of the master cylinder for the back brakes is made like that so the cap wont come of while rideing

I put a Delkevic exhaust on my VFR and drove it 50k miles with zero problems. I took out the baffles and it sounded so sweet. Excellent exhaust for the money!

The look on Matt's face, Priceless, to echo some previous comments, check valve clearances and re-tune carburetor, a bigger jet size is more than likely needed.
Sound great ! Just keep an eye on the back clamp. If it becomes loose on the muffler. I reakon the clamp may need to go on the outside of the tab Instead of either side of the frame tab. Looks awesome

It's louder because it's a small pipe compared to Max's. The benefits of the smaller pipe is a very slight power gain but it would be hardly noticeable on a DR or KLR. If use do it right you will notice a big difference when it's re jetted with a crisp throttle response an a harder pull.
It definitely put a smile on my dial! Already a noticeable difference in the feel of the throttle. Will keep and eye on the plug to check if it's running lean or not, it seemed to be running a little bit rich before the exhaust so it shouldn't be too far off.
I currently run a factory exhaust on my DR650, and I always wear ear plugs. The cheap expandable ones work, but I use the same ones I use when I'm shooting guns (custom fit, great protection). You can never get your hearing back once it's gone. Err on the safe side.
Next for Matt... opening the air box and retuning (or re-jetting) the ole carburetor. That KLR will run like new money.đČ Who knows, he may just decide to get that new header!đ

I have installed a Delk. on my Dr650 2 years ago and I still love it. Baffle still in, it's loud enough. Keep an eye on the back clamp it came loose once. I backed it with a nylock nut/bolt and no worries since then.
It was popping a lot before when throttle down from speed (loud, very loud....), I did rejeted the carby, opened the air box intake and tuned a little the fuel ratio and that popping went away. I haven't yet get to replace the header pipe yet ... but Christmas is not fare away....đ

Put the Delkevic carbon exhaust on my Yamaha XT250 about a year ago and as you would say Mark itâs bloody brilliant Cheers Chips.
Hi Mark & Matt. Good job, love the videos keep em coming! Watchout for those header pipe bolts if you do decide to change the header pipes. I always use a good pentrating fluid for a couple of days first on them. Then warm the engine a little but and then undo them. The last thing you want is a broken header bolt in the cylinder head casing

If it gets too loud when your out on the main roads or starts to bother the locals, check back with Delkevic. I bought the full system for my RT 1150 and whilst doing the 300-500 mile touring days it can get a bit irritating to your mates too. Gave Delkivic a call very helpful got a longer baffle ( they have them ready) to trim the roar. Still lets people know you are there at the junctions but a lot more bearable and user friendly on the longer rides. Great channel Mark , subscribed a while back when I was nursing a fall off the roof injury but You Tube seem to be knocking it off now and again. Keep it up it definitely helps many of us realise why we love our bikes. take care, Keep on keepin on, you know the drill :]

I have the same in my Fzr and sounds great....
I would put the header pipe on right away then rejet which you will need since the stock baffles were broken and I think the muffler came off a different bike since it had KLR in white paint written on it. Looks heaps better.

'Course I've never had a KLR, so may just be internet nonsense.
Put about 8000km on that exact pipe last summer with baffle in. The klr with the engine brake down a hill...is mint. Growling all the way. I have another klr now and may get the 13inch triangle shape for this one. Awesome sound and quality. I was never sold on those carbon fiber or other $400+ exhaust. Seen too many of them fail. đ€ đ€ They sound rediculous on twins.
Oh also was running the little carb mods.đ keep the baffle in. And ride with ear plugsđ

One I hope it came with a spark arrester you don't want to start a bush fire.
Two check it's not running lean now. Watch for backing firing on deceleration, lean running causes hot running and can lead to engine damage.

My KX250F with its pro circuit exhaust is super loud like this exhaust, shakes the dam shed.
im just about to put the same pipe on my 13 klr ,, after this I think im going to put the 350mm pipe on ,, that one is the 280 if I'm right,, does sound very good just a bit loud,, iv already got a very loud duke that upsets the neighbours,, lol great vid guys

Put a Delkevic header and muffler on my DR650. Great price and lovely fit and finish. It was too loud for my ears and I had a longer muffler than your shorty. Found a great deal on a LeoVince and love it. Ended up putting the Delkevic on a Honda NC700X (twin cylinder) and it was much better sound wise., BUT PRICE AND QUALITY good and looks great on the KLR! Matt looked happy too.

If it's too loud you can get baffle units that insert in the outlet end of muffler and are held in by one bolt. They are available in different diameters and lengths to suit muffler. They are also adjustable for sound level. You can still leave the oem baffle in.
Search "motorcycle exhaust baffle" on eBay.

just change the exhaust clamp on the silencer so both ends of the clamp goes on the outside and then it will be fine
I have the Gen 3 and just bought this same exhaust but in carbon fiber, I wonder if it has a chance of melting the plastic side cover at all? Given my bike is fuel injected no carb to have to adjust. Once I remove the Snorkel and install this exhaust I hope I am not stuck having to buy a cheesy Fuel Injection Tuner. Considering Kawa says that the ECU can adjust itself from Sea level to 10,000 ft above and I am at 1500 ft above opening the old girl up shouldn't be a big deal. I just wonder about how hot it gets.

Can anyone recommend what main jet I should use? I have a modded airbox, mozzy exaust, my stock main is 148. I have a 150 155 and 160 about to try the 155 and a 45 pilot jet instead if the stock 40. What would u guys recommend?

Opening that exhaust up could've given you a couple extra horsepower. Did you find that you needed to tweak the carb a little or was it fine as it was?

@11:07 - Does baffle incorporate spark arrestor too? Looks like you had some flames there - beware in âdryâ season... As you would know it gets VERY dry in Aus and weâve just had a awful 2019 for bushfires...
