      Absolutely - have a small tub handy and every time you reinstall a bolt or nut just a small touch of grease makes reassembling (and subsequent disassembly) way easier.

    I know that I’m pretty late on commenting, but a really good penetrating oil is handy. The best I’ve ever used you make yourself. Mix automatic transmission fluid and acetone 50/50. You have to keep it in an airtight container of the acetone will evaporate out.
    Also grease and anti seize is your friend for reassembly.
    I enjoy videos when I have time to watch. 👍

    Matt, stay on the left peg when getting off the bike, makes it easier to swing right leg over. Works for getting on the bike, too. Step on peg first, that makes you taller, then swing leg over!

    Gonna need a 400 lb spring on that shock. Load it up with travel gear and a big guy and you will see that

    Hey Mark and Matt, the best tool I ever bought is an air impact tool. If you thought those shock linkage bolts were tight, you should try removing rear sprocket bolts on an old Harley Sportster. Huge grade 8 bolts red loctited in place at 65 ft-lbs. Crazy tight! Even with a large breaker bar, it wasn't happening. I had no choice but to buy an air impact tool, and that did the job in a matter of seconds! Been using it on stubborn bolts ever since. Anyway great video, always fun watching you guys wrench on bikes!

    When I did the suspension on me 1200GS I was told they use threadlock on the fixings that needs heat to break the lock. Just a few seconds with a torch on the bolt helped. Dunno whether Kwackers are the same. Never changed the boingy bits on me KLX650.

    Somehow I knew the spanner was going to break. I would've gotten the spanner or wrench parralel with the floor and pushed down with all my weight with my foot. Anyway in the end you guys triumphed.

    This what happens when people over-tighten the shit out of bolts whilst not whacking any lube on them either. It just makes life hard for the next bloke to take them off. Love watching a bit of bike fettling, man cave style.👍🏻

    if you do decide to adjust it to a lower setting now that you're at #5, the GEN 2 shock only adjusts clockwise. It will jump back to #1 and you can go up from there. DO NOT TURN IT COUNTERCLOCKWISE

    Gotta love undoing red lock tight bolts , just like most suspension jobs air impact all the way , your new shock looks like 2nd gen Kawasaki KLR . Looking good Matt you can change the springs on those also for a stiffer suspension KLRs . My KLR is like a big marshmellow .

    Just seen it..Your REBOUND adjuster is on right side of shock at bottom as you sit on bike. That controls the oil flow for speed of rebound after compressing the shock.

    What I want to know Matt is, is it a GAMECHANGER!!! Ha. Nice wee upgrade alright, I'd say invest in a socket set & a piece of pipe about 12" for using as a breaker bar over the socket handle, That breaks the tension on seized/stiff bolts 90% of the time!! (and yeah Grease & lube all the way). Nice bit of progress though!! Awrabesht guys!! 😉🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👍🍻

    Look for any small flat head screw to adjust on lower part of rear shock..If there is one spray some wd40 on it then turn in clockwise first to see if you have any clicks left. Then remember where you were set, turn anticlockwise to feel clicks .. Looking at that shock movement I would say the oils knackered in it and springs weak, as it just dives through the stroke and doesnt return too quick either. If you have a rebound screw at bottom of shock turn fully out to let oil flow and feel the suspension then trurn in a click at a time to feel and see any difference.

    Great vid boys. Still too soft a ride for most off road stuff, you will bottom out on the rear. I changed out my rear spring to an aftermarket one an it's heaps better, it's definitely worth doing and won't break the bank.

    Great video, you got it all done. Whilst it’s all been said already about socket, breaker bar and impact gun, do you mind if I add Permatex Super Penetrant. It has helped me many times in the past. Looking forward to seeing Matt’s report after a few rides.

    Was this an opportunity missed to grease up the bolts as they act as pivots? Thanks. I'm now more fearful to attempt to replace my own shock. No helper available! And no stable bike stand. A lot of force applied to the bike during this. Don't want it falling on me as I'm crawling around on the floor.

    Your new shock is the same as the one on my 2008 KLR. They're a pile of shit though, so I put a Moab shock on mine with a heavy duty spring and it is great. The standard shock is pretty basic and even if you fit a heavier spring you can't control the rebound etc. If you load the bike up for touring the seals will blow in the original shock.

    Next time, use a penetrating oil on all the nuts over night and if you struggle to undo any nuts, use heat on all the bolts and nuts and then undo. Now sorry but I would undo the lot guys...Clean and re-grease all the linkages and bearings and bolts. P.S I dont think the shocker spring is strong enough for the abuse you guys will give that bike and especially when youre loaded up.

    Bahahaha, I'm just 9 mins in watching on my phone, and a mate launched into tirade, she was like "what bloody disgusting porno are you watching, how could you, here of all places, them talking about changing hand and putting it in backwards!"
    Needless to say I'm commenting cos I found it funny as, but the best part was convincing her to "look, it's a moto vid" and the expression once saw it was an innocent vid, and moreso their dirty mindset... Was funny as fuck!
    Hopefully I'll be able to sit on the lounge and watch the rest of my "porno" in peace

      I was watching a video on wheel bearings I needed to do mine on my car and my Girl Friend was listening and she gave me a dirty look
      Because all she heard was push in hard, harder , really pound if you need too, and use lots of lube.
      When I show her"my prono" video she didn't say a word which was a first😁

    my KTM 1290 super duke rear wheel nut is 250Nm had to use 1" drive 60mm socket & 1 meter of galv water pipe on a 1" breaker bar to loosen it

    Try hooking open end and ring spanner of similar size for extra leverage

    You need a proper breaker bar or rattle gun, putting a pipe on a ratchet is not a good idea nor is hitting a shitty ring spanner with a hammer, just me but I'm a mechanic, always reassemble with some grease

    You adjusted the rebound with the dial nut. Preload is done with the ring on top of the shock.

      Exactly if that's how GEN2 shock works
      Also easier adjust it with bike on scissor lift so more weight off the spring
      They may as well pull bolts grease it all while back at it

      No ramp adjuster on the one theyve fitted bud and no threads to adjust pre load on the replacement by the top ring. The dial nut is for preload on that particular shock 1-5. Doesnt seem to have any rebound adjuster on the replacement shock either. (Unless there is a rebound screw at bottom on side of the shock somewhere) Sent a link to the manual for the shock if its the same it may help out.

      Paw Paw Sorry Mates but Paw Paw is correct, you adjust the preload with the spring and the rebound damping with the nut.

      @@anomie6788 The nut is adjusting the spring for preload if you look. Rebound damping on rear shocks is in most cases at bottom of shock and preload and compression at top.

    There’s 2 gen2 shocks
    The original gen 2 is 2008 plus
    The revamped and improved gen2 shock is 2014 /15 onwards with a harder dampening

    Socket guys not spanners for that
    Matt never hit the threaded end with a hammer use nut on it or can stuff the thread
    Mark never put your hands inside a scissor lift :( just never know stay safe

      Just a suggestion knowing it's a budget build but the IMS 10 gal tank with SW Motech crash bars off a gen 2 KLR can, without too much fettling , be made to fit. These along with a set of Tusk pannier racks will completely transform a KLR into an awesome adventure machine. The IMS 10 gallon isn't cheap but it's the best tank to go for in terms of getting the fuel weight lower down, and it comes with vacume lifter pumps that work! Think there is only one vid on CZcams of an installation so should get lots of views. Otherwise thanks for the great vids!

    old shock is a GEN 1 KLR 650 shock
    New shock is a GEN 2 KLR650 shock
    INFO got:
    swapping the gen1 rear shock for a gen2 rear. The swap is pretty much bolt on. The bottom bolt from my gen2 shock was needed to fit on the gen1.,

    Two words - IMPACT WRENCH. You have a compressor, air operated impact wrenches are not that expensive.

      Battery powered impact wrenches work a treat to. The 1/2" ones, not the tek screw drivers.

    Please don't thrash spanners with a hammer guys it's so amateurish and very abusive to tools. Get yourselves a nice long breaker bar and some decent single hex' sockets. Leverage is your friend.
