  • @TAMThomasTAM
    @TAMThomasTAM Před rokem +829

    Arya's stabbing and subsequent survival is so batshit insane in such specific ways that I genuinely believe that the creators involved had two minds about where it was going.
    *I legitimately think that the Writer, Bryan Cogman, thought Arya's stabbing was supposed to be a fake-out*
    Episode Seven, The Broken Man, was directed by Mark Mylod and written by Bryan Cogman. Episode Eight, No One, was also directed by Mark Mylod but was written by David and Dan.
    I don't know what was going on in Mark Mylod's mind, but given just how plausible it was that Arya's death was faked in Episode Seven, it feels like Bryan Cogman, who has generally been pretty good at these episodes, purposefully led it in that direction through the writing, and then David and Dan in the next episode totally threw that out the window. Perhaps plans changed, or maybe they just didn't communicate well, or Bryan was rebelling, or maybe he just wanted to grow theory-hype, but the writing (and directing but again I have no idea what Mylod was doing) in Episode Seven absolutely feels like he planned on the whole final scene to be a fake-out.
    Maisie Williams uses her left-hand across the entirety of Game of Thrones despite being right-handed because Arya is left-handed, and yet in that *one scene* she is seen using her right-hand to do things. She just walks around and smiles and doesn't seem to be alert to anything despite knowing there will be assassins after her. She is just out in the open, unguarded and without Needle. She saunters in way we have never seen Arya saunter before or since. She's wearing different clothes, and she is making her intentions to leave be known.
    This is not just poor writing, this is *actual evidence* that this is Jaqen H'gar wearing her face to lure his unruling disciple, the Waif, into attacking him.
    But of course, that is simply not the case. Episode Eight reveals it was her all along. Which is absolutely insane. I cannot believe all of that set-up was merely just... an accident? Bryan Cogman had to have done this purposefully. I simply can't believe someone could fuck up a scene *that badly*.
    Perhaps it was purposeful across the production team. It is just done in such a way to get people talking and theorising just to keep up the hype? It's shady but they're not above it. Include a bunch of evidence for an obvious theory so people keep talking about it for the next week. But, if that's the case, why not just... go through with the theory, make their audience feel clever for figuring it out while shocking the rest with the clever reveal, like with Bran and Rickon surviving in Season 2? Why drop it then? Unless they wanted to subvert expectation with purposefully dogshit writing. How the fuck does one even rationalise that?
    It's just difficult to believe that they accidentally wrote in all this evidence for a theory that just makes sense.
    How do you accidentally do something like that? It's like if GRRM accidentally wrote the Red Wedding, with all the evidence leading up to it and the whole scene itself... and then the next chapter just had Catelyn and Walder Frey and Roose Bolton and Robb Stark just talking about how "now that little argument is over, let's talk about the next steps of the war" and it was never addressed again, he just forgot that he had killed them all off.
    Utter insanity. The scene at the end of The Broken Man is not only the moment the show entirely jumps the shark, but the moment they show how well they can jump the shark and then get eaten by a bear and somehow reconstitute itself seconds later and then never bring up the bear, the shark, or the ramp ever again.

    the waif is really one of the worst characters D&D wrote. The entire point of the Faceless Men is that they abstain from personal desires and biases, anything that could make them distinct individuals. Yet the waif, who we can assume is high enough in the cult hierarchy to train new members, constantly shows personal bias against Arya for being born a noble DESPITE that not mattering AT ALL if Arya becomes a member of the murdercult, to the point where she actively sabotages Arya's training and tries to kill her when the Faceless Men normally only kill when given a (paid for) target.
    Instead of reprimanding the waif for the clear personal grudge she holds and reminding her that she must be no one to properly fill her role (LIKE HE SHOULD), Jaqen instead just kind of shrugs and even eggs her on? Like how badly is the waif written that she even makes Jaqen's writing worse lol.
    Her whole weird one-sided rivalry with Arya just smacks of that stupid "if there are two women in the same environment they must be rivals" trope that D&D love using (Sansa & Dany, Cersei & Margaery, every scene with the sand snakes, you get the point).

    • @oOoCassandraSteeloOo
      @oOoCassandraSteeloOo Před rokem +48

      Your last statement made so much sense to me right now. Of course D&D would think that the waif is like "Who's that new girl, I don't like her, she's a biatch". Her character frustrated me so much.
      Why even have her in the show, she doesn't make the slightest sense no matter which angle you're trying to look at it from.

    • @kalinmir
      @kalinmir Před rokem +29

      What is strange is that Margaery is originally so much better developed charcter then in the books where she is for the most part a sort of mcguffin for the civil war to function and partly to resolve it...then just render her impotant and dumb and just kill her off

    • @Inkspeckle
      @Inkspeckle Před rokem +5

      @@oOoCassandraSteeloOo so we can have a pointless conflict to drag out the Braavos plot and a bossfight for Arya to defeat so she can become the ultimate superninja, duh

    • @Inkspeckle
      @Inkspeckle Před rokem +38

      @@kalinmir Something that also really bothers me about Margaery's writing in the show vs the books it that it so clearly shows that D&D do not understand the concept of unreliable narration AT ALL.
      In the books, most of the allegations of Margaery being an ambitious, power hungry schemer come from CERSEI, one of the most notoriously paranoid characters who is known to accuse people of all kinds of ill will towards her and her family (especially other women). She also believes Margaery is the "younger and more beautiful" queen of Maggy the Frog's prophecy come to cast her down, further fueling her negative interpretations of Margaery's every action. Margaery gifts Tommen some kittens? She must be trying to manipulate him and separate him from Cersei. Margaery is kind to the smallfolk and being charitable? She must be trying to get the populace on her side to undermine Cersei.
      Anyone with basic reading comprehension can see that a lot of the accusations are paper thin and lack any concrete evidence, supporting the idea that Cersei has a warped view of the world (and is likely projecting too), and that Margaery probably isn't a scheming monster.i Its more likely she is just kind sometimes (something Cersei probably can't comprehend). Not saying she isn't politically aware, but not the vile seductress of Cersei's imagination.
      D&D however completely lack that reading comprehension, so they took Cersei's paranoia at face value and made Margaery exactly the scheming seductress that she imagined, with no nuance at all because, again, if there are two powerful women in the same location, they must be rivals and constantly catfight.
      George puts such effort into portraying the women in his work as complex, flawed and mutidimensional characters, but D&D just make them Hashtag Girlbosses, decoration for the scenery, or complete villains, with no ground between and no level of complexity whatsoever. Also they can never work together without bickering, because I guess thats what D&D think women do.

    HOLY SHIT, I FIGURED IT OUT! Arya Stark actually did die, and the person we saw for the rest of the show is a faceless man, walking around with Arya's face.
    That would explain all of her weird, creepy and inconsistent behavior for the rest of the show; her super-assassin skills (like besting Brienne, killing ALL of the Freys at once, and killing Reaghar); her ability to survive anything (Kings Landing explosions); the fact that she did not connect or over connected with the ones she once knew (Sansa, Jon and Nymeria); and last but not least, her literally just sailing off the edge of the earth.
    In fact, they pretty much fucking announced it when they said "A girl is Arya Stark of Winterfell." The assassin was announcing the persona she adopted. How/why else would a cult of super-assassins just let a less-than-half failure of a trainee walk away with faces, and their secrets? At first I thought it was really weird that the Waif didn't slit Arya's throat given that she was in prime throat-slitting range. But then I remembered that it's not possible to survive that, whereas it's completely possible to survive multiple stab wounds to the abdomen. People will bring up blood poisoning but there's actually not a single instance of anyone dying from an infected wound in GoT, so we can't be sure disease exists in this world. And probably one of the faceless man powers is being immune to exsanguination, because fuck it.

      Edmure in particular being turned onto a laughing stock (to his last scene, when Sansa tells him to sit down...) while in ASOIAF he's not really incompetent. He misses with the arrows because he's crying so much he can't see straight, so the Blackfish politely asks him if he can take a turn, he doesn't just push him around.
      And Edmure also defies Jaime by letting Brynden escape from Riverun...
      Sure in the books Catelyn thinks of him as having a good heart (when she finds out that Edmure had taken in all the smallfolks in the castle when the riverlands were being sacked by Lannister's sellswords and Gregor Clegane's men) but also being soft in the head...
      Then there's that song about him having a "floppy fish" and the time he dun goofed in battle, and...
      He's still not that bad, the people love him, he has a bunch of friends loyal to him, and even if he's no military genius he's courageous (Jaime thinks that he will unjustly be accused of being a coward for surrenderng Riverrun, when in fact he was scared for his child, not for his own life) and an all around pretty cool guy.
      Kevan Lannister is another one I really like, as he's one of the few high born officiers who isn't trying to get to the top himself... he was the first to realize that Tywin was a military genius, and decided that he would devote his entire life to get his brother to the top, and he didn't care if that meant living in his shadows.
      (plus Tyron has several fond memories of Kevan trying to get Tywin to show his son more affection, even if sadly it backfired)
      Tywin's other brothers tried to either rival him (Tygett) or decided to bow out of the game because Tywon was so gifted, what was the point in trying to compete with him (Gerion)... but Kevan decided to do his best to prop him up, and I don't hate that trait of character, it makes him stand out.

    The "gamble" of Jaime's plan to have Edmure relinguish Riverrun to the king's army seems to at least make more sense in the books, as I'm sure you are well aware of.
    1) The freys never conquered Riverrun in the first place. I'm not certain this was ever adressed in the show. Riverrun stood defiant from the beginning of the rebellion, and remained under siege after Edmure was captured by the Freys and the blackfish took command. The freys were simply PROMISED riverrun by Tommen.
    2) The soldiers at Riverrun were loyal to their liege lord, which is Edmure. The blackfish was considered second in command. And while the blackfish commanded the respect of his soldiers, he did not, in fact, command them unconditionally.
    3) In the books it really isn't a gamble. The king's army had already done everything in it's power to have the blackfish surrender, unsuccesfully. The freys had bluffed too many times by showing Edmure about to be hanged, repeatedly. Brynden knew the freys wouldn't do it (In the show it looks as if brynden just hates Edmure. But that isn't the case in the books. Not listening to Frey threats was simply the logical thing to do.), therefore offering to kill Edmure if Brynden didn't surrender wasn't an option anymore, and Jaime promptly relieved the freys of their command of Edmure. (Naturally, the freys were in no position to actually command edmure to do anything with regards to surrendering the keep. Edmure was a hostage of the crown, and they couldn't exactly offer him the same things Jaime did.)
    Jaime himself couldn't convince Brynden on his word alone, because of course, the word of a kingslayer means nothing to a man like the blackfish, who is also still very bitter about Caitlyn's death and the assumed death of 3 of her children, along with the assumed imprisonment of Sansa and Arya (the tullies likely don't know both of them have escaped, though it's possibly they knew about Sansa.) all more or less directly a consequence of the Lannister's actions.
    So Jaime did the only thing he COULD do, which was have Edmure attempt to win his men over to surrendering. This makes sense because, as Jaime put it, Edmure's value as a hostage is non-existent if they take the castle by force and install the new Frey lord. So if Brynden DOESN'T surrender, Edmure's life is basically forfeit, and his men along with many of the king's men will die unneccesarily. Edmure is well aware of this.
    Jaime also offers Edmure a comfortable prison cell back at I believe casterly rock, along with a guarantee of his safety, his wife's safety, and the safety of his unborn child.
    Now the one thing that IS a gamble, is Jaime telling Edmure they will win the siege through force. Jaime is lying here, as the siege would go on for quite some time, but he bluffs about the size of his army and what they could do. So he makes it seem as if Edmure relinguishing the seat of riverrun is the most beneficial for all parties, and the riverrun garrison in particular.
    Edmure therefore has no reason (in his mind) to not accept Jamie's bargain. And Jaime has no reason to keep Edmure alive if Edmure's plea to the riverrun soldiers fails. In short, Jaime loses nothing by giving away Edmure. If Edmure's plea doesn't work, then he's dead anyway, along with the rest of the riverrun garrison.
    So yes, Jaime's action here makes perfect sense, and so do Edmure's. The blackfish is NOT the lord of Riverrun, and is supposed to listen to the liege lord's commands. The blackfish also was in the vale for a bunch of years if I'm not mistaken, and was never well-loved in Riverrun by Hoster Tully and possibly his men. Edmure, in the meantime, commanded his troops for quite some time during Robb Stark's rebellion, and was a known and beloved lord for many years before that.
    So it's perfeclty reasonable that the soldiers, who also fear for their completely forfeit lives but are driven by the blackfish, surrender their position and go home ALIVE. The blackfish has nothing to offer them but fancy words of honor and the idea that the lannisters would just kill them if they surrendered. But if Edmure commands it and guarantees their safety, that's a different story entirely.
    Perhaps the show just didn't do a good job at portraying the precise situation here. (It's been years since I last saw season 6 and honestly I have no intention of ever watching it again.) Regardless, I did quite like this chapter in a Feast for Crows, and it DID in fact establish jaime as a valuable and intelligent commander. Nobody could offer Edmure his safety in Castlerly rock except for Jaime, as both a lannister and a kingsguard member, and jaime used that power to great effect here.

    The annoying thing about Kevan Lannister is that he’s described as being basically the same as Tywin. Ferocious and calculating, understanding his role as the younger brother to Tywin and playing it perfectly. It’s said that if he was the older brother and Tywin the younger, nothing would have changed as they both knew their roles and did what had to be done. They were interchangeable.
    So when Kevan effectively became head of House Lannister (with Jamie in the kingsguard, Cersei under house arrest, Tyrion defecting and Lancels indoctrination) he does… nothing? Imagine Tywin in this situation, Kevan should have acted the same way.

    Dany kinda forgetting about the Iron fleet was planned by Cersei (Tinfoil)
    This episode confirmed that the origin of the amnesia water was the canals in Braavos. When Arya fell into the canal with massive open wounds, Amnesia water got into her bloodstream. While the immediate effect of this is Arya forgetting to die and being able to escape to safety, the Amnesia water also stayed in Arya's system. Because of this, she carried it back to Westeros when she returned and after she arrived it went from her body to Westeros's water supply, causing the amnesia outbreak that was a major plot point in seasons 7-8. It's basically canon at this point that Daenarys kinda forgot about the Iron fleet because of the amnesia water, which we now know was brought to Westeros by Arya Stark, so she indirectly caused Dany to forget about the Iron fleet.
    This all ties back into the grand faceless man amnesia conspiracy theory. After hearing about the incoming invasion from Daenarys Targaryen, Cersei hired the Faceless men to kill her. However, they were unable to reach her due to the distances involved, so instead they began a long-term plot to kill her. This explains the Waif's actions; she stabbed Arya to make sure the Amnesia water would enter her bloodstream, but then pushing her into the river of Amnesia water had two other important effects on her: She would forget to die, and therefore survive to return to Westeros, and would also forget the dehumanisation the cult put her through, remember her true identity and want to leave. Back to Westeros.
    From here, the plan is simple. The Amnesia water will go from Arya into the water supply of Westeros, where it will eventually end up being drunk by Dany and her allies. This causes all of the stupid decisions they make in seasons 7-8, and is part of the Faceless mens' plans to destabilise her alliance. It also nearly leads to Daenarys's death and the deaths of one of her dragons, when she kinda forgets about the iron fleet and almost gets shot down. However, she's saved by the staff made from plot armour Gendry made for Arya earlier in the season, which Daenarys borrowed for such an important battle and had in her back pocket the entire time.
    Edit: Stuff about the staff. Important part of the theory I forgot.

    In fairness to the stupid Jaime-Riverrun thing: the Blackfish isn't their commander. They are Tully loyalists, which means they sworn to the King in the North (even in an interregnum), which means the King on the Iron Throne is essentially a foreign monarch to them. So the royal decree giving Riverrun to the Freys is worth no more to them than toilet paper. That makes Lord Edmure the rightful lord of Riverrun in their eyes, they follow the Blackfish because he's Lord Edmure's castellan. Also Edmure's their most valuable hostage because the Lanisters and Freys have shit hostages. Edmure's only value, now that Riverrun has been stripped from him, is that he's a cousin of Sansa... That she's never met and doesn't know. He has no claims (that aren't superseded by royal decree) and he has no wealth, no army, no nothing. He's a landless, disheveled aristocrat with a famous name. Not worthless, not invaluable.
    It was still a stupid gambit and a worthless story point that could have been done so much better. Imagine if Edmure hadn't surrendered the castle but, as the Freys whined about it, Jaime shrugged his shoulders because the ploy with Edmure was just to distracted the garrison while Bronn and a small strike force attacked through the secret escape gate (how does he know about it? great question full of interesting possibilities). This would be something since the whole point of Edmure's cooperation was that Jaime threatened to kill his son (betrayal of FAMILY, duty, honor) only to find out that a) Jaime had a back up plan and b) Jaime lied about Edmure's son (maybe he died in childbirth or maybe he never existed and Jaime just made him up).
    Might not be perfect, but it'd be better. Take notes writers, this whole shitshow is what your First Draft looks like. If you think you're done after the First Draft: you're wrong.

    • @johnnyskinwalker4095
      @johnnyskinwalker4095 Před rokem +2

      So Jaime by shear luck would know about the secret passage? It's a bit iffy. It's supposed to be a desperate situation and the only way that Jaime can take the castle is by using the contempt that Edmure has for him to turn it around and threaten/scare him into having him surrender to his will. Also why wouldn't Edmure know about the existance of his child? I would presume even as a prisoner that his wife would pay him a couple of visits.
      Writing-wise It's a good idea but of course it could have been better written as it works out a little too much. As if someone could say Abrakadabra and everything works fine, they lay down their swords smoothly. Maybe they could have had a mini civil war in the castle with Black Fish managing to mount a group of enough men to side with him. Edmure kills Black Fish(would be a sort of revenge of him always treating him like garbage). Or it could be mercy cause he wouldn't want to fall into the clutches of the Freys.

    The thing I hate about the Beric / Thoros / Sandor scene is that this was THE chance to get Lady Stoneheart into the story. Instead they have Sandor piss into the river, literally pissing on the idea to add Lady Stoneheart into the story.
    Season 8 happened because the three characters who tie all the side characters together (Mel, fAegon, and Lady Stoneheart,) were all diminished in significance or completely cut. Bada-bing, now half the characters in the story have nowhere to go.

    Spoiler warning for house of the dragon/fire and blood
    Imagine if House of the Dragon continued this kind of plot armor and Rhaenyra just survives being eaten by Sunfyre and jumps out only for Aegon II to just kind of forget to kill his half sister, all in service of extending the Dance of the Dragons because HBO likes money and despises their patrons.

    Wouldn't it have made more sense for Arya to have seen through the waif's disguise, you know the true seeing thing that Syrio tried to teach her. You could still have her run, get a couple injuries then go to Lady Crane. Nothing else would change but it wouldn't be completely absurd that Arya survives and would give more payoff for her training arc and link back to her first teacher as Arya showing her returning to Arya from No-one.

    Glidus I love your mind. If Petyr and the Vale had freed Riverrun, we could have had a scene with Petyr and the Blackfish and Edmure!
    Like, Brynden was the one who listened to all the Tully kids and Petyr when they were young, the one to carry a drunken Petyr to bed after he drowned his sorrow over Catelyn's rejection of him. Brynden probably listened to his drunken sobbing over unrequited love. He has seen Petyr at his most vulnerable.
    There is so much potential in a meeting between those two, and Edmure and Petyr, particularly after all we know Petyr has done to House Tully, directly or indirectly.
