Honestly we don't even see his face in the flashback anyway so why not just get some young blond extra with a similar face profile and slap him in Kingsguard armor? I think the audience would put two and two together on this one.

Its worse than you think with Sam and Randal. He could have alowed Sam to follow his intrests as a Maester. Maesters vows relinquish familly and inheritance. Thus clearing the path for Randal's preferred son to inherit. He could have achieved his goals whilst making Sam happy and keeping the wife sweet. Sam would have been close and able to mantain family relationships during his studies but no threat to his brother Dickon or Randal's legacy. He would have then served in a useful well respected capacity making use of his talents but avoiding demonstrating his perceived shortcomings. No honour or face would have been lost. He sent Sam to the wall out of shear spite.

Like Valyrian steel swords are like super valuable and rare to the point where even Tywin Lannister tried to buy one from different houses for an ass load of gold but no one sold it to him. So the fact that Randalls ancestral Valyrian sword is stolen by his son who he hates and he doesn't even care is just so bizarre. Like i'd assume he would be furious and send his men to kill Sam and retrieve the sword but i guess he forgot or something.

I absolutely HATE the "you're all my bloodriders" thing because it just shows how the writers didn't care about consistency in their setting at all anymore at this point. Not because they promise something that never happens (season 8 wasn't even out yet when I first saw this scene) but because when someone is a bloodrider they're not only meant to kill the person that kills you but they're also meant to kill themselves afterwards. Which means that by making all of the Dothraki her bloodriders Daenerys basically guaranteed that the entirety of the Dothraki would cease to exist if she were to ever die in combat. Which is either a subtle demonstration of the growing narcissism of the character of Daenerys Targaryen cleverly and skillfully setting up her eventually turn to the dark side or... you know, just shit writing because these writers never think through what they're putting on the page.

Not only would Sam standing up to his father have made for a better scene, but would've made more sense. His entire character arc, at least in the show, has been a coward learning to make a stand in spite of his fear. He did it when Jon left Castle Black, but was still trembling and afraid. He did it again with the white walker, again with the wildlings storming Castle Black. His best friend is Jon, who grew up with Ned "a man can only be brave when he's afraid" Stark, and he'd begun to embody that message.
Sam knows his dad's a jerk and considers him weak, so bluffing strength to make himself look stronger might've made an impact on his dad and cause him to second guess himself, allowing Sam to put Gilly there and protect her, which was his entire goal. He's spent years at the wall; even if he's scared of his father, his father doesn't know that.
It would've been even better if his bravery STARTED as a bluff, but it became genuine as he realized his grumpy old man father and never-seen-combat brother are nothing compared to what he's seen. He, Sam, has KILLED something worse than his father and brother put together ten times over. He should've started off feigning confidence, before becoming truly confident as he spoke to them; people he used to fear, but now sees as little more than jokes.
That revelation could've been a turning point for Sam's character, where he has to figure out who he really is, now that he's not a coward. Now that HE'S the one in control (for the first time in his life, no less) he needs to figure out whether he's a bully like his father, or better than that. And when he concludes that being compassionate and caring is a better way to be, that'd be FURTHER character growth
tl;dr they did the fat boy dirty

I did like Jamie in the books, where he is going around trying to end the war by making deals with the other lords. It showed he had changed. Instead of violence, he used his intelligence, diplomacy and was quite willing to stretch the truth when reporting back to the crown. The TV Jamie never grew up.
EDIT: I forgot about Arya being punished. I seem to recall in the books, she is made blind because she's starting to enjoy murdering people a bit too much and is doing some extra curricular work. It made sense in the books but not in the show.

I can’t explain the castle situation beyond bad choices on the show’s part, but I can try and explain the sword situation. The Lannister’s used to have a Valyrian steel sword until it was lost (Tyrion’s uncle Gerion went on a journey to find it prior to the books). It was said that Lannister gold would bring about the end of Valyria so the Valyrians weren’t too keen on selling their swords. As for the Tarlys owning a sword, it’s not completely out of the blue considering that the Mormonts and Corbrays (vassal houses of the Starks and Arryns) also own Valyrian steel swords (Longclaw and Lady Forlorn). And the most famous sword in Westeros, whilst not Valyrian steel, also belonged not to a major house but to the Dayne’s, a vassal house of House Nymeros Martell.

There were wildlings in the south, since I do believe the Vale’s mountain clans qualify as such. While, yes, Randyl wouldn’t have had to contend with wildlings himself, he was more than enough familiar to establish a resentment of them based on their history/stereotypes.
In the end, that’s about as complex as I can make it. There’s nothing much going on under this character’s surface beyond “mean army dad-thing.”

Come to think of it. Him taking responsibility and being solely executed would've been so much better without his son joining.
That way, Randyl's beloved son could've met up with Sam and given rivalry, "Randyl loved me, Randyl saved me, and all you did to our wonderful father is disgrace him and steal his sword.", he could've added some depth to the late Tarly and maybe even inspired Jon Snow to part ways with Daenarys. Given a voice of resistance in a sea of sycophants.

We'll ignore that there will not be enough wood on the iron islands, at least how shown in the show, to make that many.
I didn't find figures on how long a single ship took to build in the 1800s, so I will use 2 figures that I would say are fair if not even unrealistically quick.
Assuming it takes 10 weeks to build a ship, and they can build 10 ships as the same time, it takes 19 years to build them. Assuming they can build 20 at a time, it takes 9.5 years (duh.)
Assuming it takes 5 weeks to build one ship and they can build 20 at a time, it still takes 4.8 years to finish them.
Meaning that they could have not built a thousand ships in a few months like the show suggests.

4:15 yes, lords do that, or at least they used to. Gardening was, a long time ago, considered an extremely manly thing. Not farming food, actually gardening, like growing pretty things and trees n stuff. In olden times, it was a sign of power; it showed dominion and control over nature and the earth. Sorta like a "where I go, I create life where before there was none. The earth bends to my will and life appears at my command" thing. Which is a neater flex than killing, since it shows a lot more control and power.

Bran says he can’t see the future in one scene, but then in another scene, when Tyrion asked him if he’d take the crown over the six kingdoms, he says, “why do you think I came all this way”, suggesting that he can see the future and knew he’d be asked to be king.
I think Bran lied about whether he could see the future or not because he can see the future based on what he said about coming all that way and some of the visions he saw that were things that wouldn’t happen until later in the series, like seeing the shadow of Drogon over KL way back in season five, when Dany, was still in Essos.
I didn’t blame him for lying because if they knew he could see the future, then they would all realize that the little shit knew Theon would die needlessly because Arya would soon kill the Night King. He also knew that Dany would go nuts and kill every man, woman, child, senior and disabled person in KL. You’d think he’d at least have had sympathy on the disabled people and warned everyone that Dany would blow a gasket and become the Hitler of Westeros.
The actual truth is that D&D are such bad writers that they can’t maintain any consistency with any character in the show. I could go on and on about all of the shocking inconsistencies and bad continuity D&D wrote in their sorry scripts, ruining the entire show by giving us the worst ending of each character’s arc and the worst ending for every plot imagined.
Before season five, I couldn’t wait until the ending of this awesome series, so I could sit down one day in the future and power watch the entire series on blue ray, but their last three seasons were so bad, it is not watchable from beginning to end anymore.

The “You couldn’t have written anything better” argument is the weakest argument I’ve ever heard anyone put forward in defence of stuff. We’re not paid writers, we don’t have to be able to do something better in order to be aware somebody did a shit job of the thing they’re paid for.

It’s like a Michelin star cook responding to complaints about their food with “oh yeah? You couldn’t have cooked this.” You’re supposed to be the expert here, and we can still taste!

I am watching this a little less than two years since I last watched the show and I didn't even remember that Jaime was dismissed from the kingsguard, so that tells you how little impact it had on the story.

I forgot what Horn Hill looked like in the show. It's the most palacey of all the castles in Westeros and actually looks pretty legit. Riverrun's always been the prettiest and most whimsical to me, and it's nice to see another beautiful castle (though calling Horn Hill a castle doesn't quite feel right) 🏰

May be a quirk of different commonwealth dialects but for American hunters, elk and deer are absolutely different things (despite both being cervids). The types of hunting are completely different and the outcomes is completely different. An elk offers several times more meat than a deer.
