Rodney Mullen is the man that made millions love skateboarding. I remember that ma grandma hated skating, so I showed her some old videos of Rodney, she was so shocked and called him an artist. Love this man
Great video, Jonny! Felt it may be necessary to mention that although Rodney may be the first to add complex flips into and out of primoslides, the actual trick itself was invented by none other than Primo Desiderio back in the mid 80's. Standing on the side of your board (or the "rail" of your board) was consistently referred to as standing in Heelside (griptape behind you) and Toeside Rail (griptape facing forward). Primo comes along and figures out how to slide in heelside position. Fast forward 15 years or so and we see the release of Tony Hawk Pro Skater, which referred to standing in rail as "Primo", thus altering the culture of what we call standing on the side of our board to this day.
He skates for Revive who Arron Kyro (Braille) also skates for. They're all friends man. So what you want basically happen. Even Gabe from Braille is flow on Revive
I really like how you clarified when someone else had done a trick first on vert (or caveman). And then Rodney adapted it to street skating. Thank you, and keep shredding!
Been watching your videos for a while now and... Your respect for skate history and Mullen made me rekindle my love for skating. My Giger Cerberus dog deck just arrived a few weeks back and I'm loving the feeling of skating again. Thanks brother! 43 yrs old and skateboard again!
Ich liebe Rodney einfach! Wahrscheinlich für immermein Skateboard-Idol. Und, dass du dieses Video über ihn machst ist total genial, daich dich als einen der legitimen Nachfolger von ihm sehe.
Yeah Killian has got mad skills. He's more freestyle than most 'teenage' skaters can handle, but a more mature skater should really appreciate how good he really is.
The underflip is mesmerizing to me. Hard enough to flip and land but to use your foot, while in mid air, to flip the board the opposite direction it's moving seems amazing to me. Every time I see it I can't help but say out loud, "Amazing" or more literally, "That's fucking amazing!". RM was so far ahead of his time. Oh yeah, the audio is almost a work of art.
i remember 5 years ago, there's only 3 or 5 old Rodney Mullen videos, thanks to this videos he finally has the deserved recognition of being the best of all time and now we have a lot of him !
As allways great video! For me it's a trip down memory lane. I can remember back then if you freestyled you were afraid to do tricks while you were moving. I'm thankful though of the progression that freestyle brought to street skating.
I love ur tribute to rodney. Hes the best and one of the only ones who can duplicate what seems to be an accident. The flip in flip out casperslide is my fav still. And i can only appreciate it. Never in my wildest dreams could i do that. The primo is crazy as well
Great video, Giger. I think that a serie of videos with more history of the skate will be a great chance to more people understand and cheers the big legends we have in the sport
Fantastic video! Seeing those trick clips during this video just makes you realize how incredibly superhuman Rodney is. You could substitute any skater today that would do those same tricks (which is very few if any) and we'd be amazed in 2017. Rodney did these 20 and 30 YEARS ago!! Holy s#*%!
The GOAT. That trick that most kids learn when they first start? Rodney. Those advanced street tricks and revolutionary advancement? Rodney. Tricks that people can’t even do consistently if at all? Rodney. The modern board and trucks everyone uses? Rodney. He made people realize what was even possible on a board. Truly The Godfather.
All do respect J, but I'm pretty sure the tre flip was done more around 85-86. 1982 sounds way early. I'm not an authority on the matter, it's just what I remember.
Awesome video one of the tricks rodney didnt invent was the heelflip but he invented damn near every other trick lol Rodney is my favorite freestyle skater he really is insane
Ask rad rat is a skateboarder CZcams channel that covers all things skatboarding. skate history trick tips and I think Johnny should somewhat do the same. he's a great speaker.
Primo Desiderio himself used to do Primo Slides in shows at Sea World all the time. They were "simple" moving rail stalls to slide and he used a modified freestyle board to do it. He cut a notch in the edge of the board and embedded a plastic rail there to do it (the stage area wasn't that slick). He could do them out in front of his house where there was a slick patch of ground though. This was in the late 80's.
There was a husband and wife freestyle skating team in San Diego in the early 80's. Diane and Primo Desadario (not sure if spelled corectly ) He used to do the "Primo" slide all the time. I think it was named after him.
I don't think a lot of people can't do dark, primo, casper slides because they're hard (I agree they're hard) I think the real reason people can't do them is because literally nobody is putting the effort into learning them. You completely trash your board or hardware to do them and boards aren't cheap.
I tried telling the kids at the skate park Rodney Mullen invented most of the flat land tech tricks we do today and THEY are like "WHO" ? I told them to look him up so I'm glad you're here to inform the kids 😉
bro I have an audio system and video almost blew out my ears with the popping lmfao, I guess opera is one of the browsers that messes with the audio of this video?
His swiss is getting better? I only heard english in this video. I think you mean his english is getting better. Unless you mean that good swiss is no swiss?
When talking about learning nbr 2 the Casperslide, you looked down & to your right. You said it was very painful to learn. That "tell" of body language indicates you were visualizing the pain you went through learning it. Better you than me. I was a shit skater but always had massive admiration for them & what they could do.
You forgot to mention that the original impossible was actually a fingerflip variation, then moved into a nosehook variation, before finally settling at the ollie impossible.
Technically the original primo was done by primo desiderio (you start by rolling then go into rail/primo on the heel side of your skateboard) but you gotta admit Rodney took that trick and others to another level.
Flash back Rodney Casper sliding I baggy ass pants. With the smallest wheels that were awful to skate on. It really was a era. But better than the 80s boards for sure
Lovely Audio Quality! 10/10 Would Love To Destroy My Speakers Again.
not my fault works fine on certain browsers.. ask youtube.
@@JonnyGiger Every other video of yours works fine for me. It's only this video that has very bad audio artifacts.
Works on Safari
lmao
@@JonnyGiger haha this is funny, you're such a good skater and you tuber but then CZcams nerfed you
Rodney Mullen is the man that made millions love skateboarding. I remember that ma grandma hated skating, so I showed her some old videos of Rodney, she was so shocked and called him an artist. Love this man
daniellow11 the greatest ever
That's really sweet.
saying that Mullen was "thinking outside of the box" is an understatement... he was outside of this entire UNIVERSE
Great video, Jonny! Brett Novak Damn what's up, history lesson? Awesome!
Ah, exactly. I was just saying that in another comment. I have first hand knowledge too. I knew him personally.
as a older skater Rodney was always my favorite
I was actually going to post something about this (Origins of Primo), but I see Mr. Novak is already on the case!
Thank you Professor. We do appreciate the knowledge you bestow.
Rodney Mullen is a living legend, He is the Chuck Norris of skateboarding.
+Grant Galloway When Rodney Mullen ollies, the board does not lift. The Earth moves away from the board.
XD
X- SABO absolutely no disputing that...
i said he is a chuck berry of skate
I would compare him more to Bruce lee because bruce was also an inventor
so no1s gonna say anything about the cancer audio ? lol ok
first comment i made! I'd like jonny to fork up some dosh for the hearing aid I now need i my left ear.
Yeah, I'm worried my speakers will blow out, he has never heard of audio editing software.
i thought it was just my headphones
@@livedandletdie how do you even get audio that bad? I dont even know how
Saw the title and was looking forward to it, but just could not watch it, the audio was killing me. Please remake the audio Jonny!
The audio makes it impossible to watch, I had to instantly close this.
He was literally the Mozart of skateboarding.
**is*
One of the main reason I started following you was because of how much you respect Mullen & how incredible he is & that you try to learn his tricks.
#GetJonnyBackAtTheBerrics
brettcone u are everywhere in the comments
If Braille becomes a legit Pro Team I think Jonny should join.
He skates for Revive who Arron Kyro (Braille) also skates for. They're all friends man. So what you want basically happen. Even Gabe from Braille is flow on Revive
They will have a hard time, because late flips are allowed. Go Jonny!
brettcone dude I've been saying that for so long!! for real he is so underrated
WTF with the sound ? :O
RODNEY MULLEN is the most important person in modern street skating. Thank you for acknowledge that man.

Is the one dude you know that can do primo-slides consistently Alex Rademaker?
yes
I've seen that Kilian Martin doing it very well. I think his style pretty close to Mullen's btw
Yeah Killian has got mad skills. He's more freestyle than most 'teenage' skaters can handle, but a more mature skater should really appreciate how good he really is.

great video about a great legend!
I dig your accent. "Rodney Moolen" lol
Bret Hart: "I'm the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be."
Rodney Mullen: "Hold my juice box."
"Hold my Grip Tape"

Rodney did these 20 and 30 YEARS ago!! Holy s#*%!
Pretty sure Primo invented the Primo slide in the 80s. Rodney took it to a new level.
You've both been great influences on the skate community :)
Rodney does his tricks so much smoother than anyone else ever
my left headphone enjoyed the video
I like these type of vids. Good work johnny.
I have to agree! Primos and darkslides are also my favorites! :D
He’s the greatest skateboarder of all time hands down.

Sick vid on the history of skateboarding man
So Rodney Mullen is the Sage of the Six Paths of skateboarding
the Ollie is the most important trick ever invented. this trick is the fundamental pillar of the street skating of our days
lets see you do a primo slide!
casperslide is life¡ Is the gold metal of the all tricks.
OMG my speaker...

The fucks with the audio? Homie actually made me think my phone broke
Primo Desiderio was doing sliding railstands in the 80s, hence the name Primo slide. Flipping and out of them on street however, is all Mullen.
Great History Lesson. Thanks!
Love this one, showing the young bucks their history.
Great video man as always
There was a husband and wife freestyle skating team in San Diego in the early 80's. Diane and Primo Desadario (not sure if spelled corectly ) He used to do the "Primo" slide all the time. I think it was named after him.
I might be mistaken but I thought Tony Hawk was inspired by Rodeny to do the Ollie airwalk. I believe he says that in the Bones Brigade documentary.
Might be the Rodney Mullen “from the ground up” doc
I don't think a lot of people can't do dark, primo, casper slides because they're hard (I agree they're hard) I think the real reason people can't do them is because literally nobody is putting the effort into learning them. Hahaha.. Deezy was joking I believe. American humor.. we love the Swiss.
By a new mic please for the love of god
Thank giger for recognizing mullen is a legendary skater. you're great.
Love the audio
Next, will we see you attempting primo slides? I'd love to see!
First saw Rodney on That's Incredible early 80s. Still like 88 before I started riding.
Can’t wait til you teach us how to do primo slides 😂
Oh man I can't get through this video. The Mic cancer is so bad it's hurting my head ): great video though!
hey thanks man, it actually depends which browser you use to watch. it's a shame this video is messed up on some browsers for some reason...
Mullen is a skate genius.....

That "tell" of body language indicates you were visualizing the pain you went through learning it.

To land a kick flip primo ehe continuing your forward momentum and then coming out of it landing on your wheels, is just friggin mind boggling to me
I would love this video, but sound is insane.
Great, but i'm afraid u r having some prob with your mic bro, kind of strange acute noise
My ears hurt, but I will watch these Rodney clips
Also....hes the first person to do switch grind tricks and switch flips in grinds.
Rodney is also the first person to do heel flips.
You guys gotta watch Rodney Mullens Ted talk lol
Jonny - I CHALLENGE YOU to do a casper slide tre flip out, like the clip of Rodney you put in this video. Good luck, I know you can do it!!
dude the saturation is max lvl
Whoa I know this vid is old but what up with all the static?
Turned the audio up to 13
Rodney was the best and forever will be the best at flat ground skateboarding
You forgot to mention that the original impossible was actually a fingerflip variation, then moved into a nosehook variation, before finally settling at the ollie impossible.
IAmTheBestMang Forgot? Or omitted? Maybe it was #11 and only a top 10 list.
BADASS VIDEOO!!!!
All Hail Rodney. Im Forever in your grace .
The impossible actually makes so much sense
Technically the original primo was done by primo desiderio (you start by rolling then go into rail/primo on the heel side of your skateboard) but you gotta admit Rodney took that trick and others to another level.
Did anyone else have to turn down volume all the way and use subtitles
Thanks Rodney! And thanks Jonny!
Hands down most innovative skater ever.
