- There's a good reason he's named one of the most important skaters of all time. This video shows what tricks he invented when, taking the reference of an old Plan B ad: The house that Rodney built.

I love that your channel pays so much respect to Rodney Mullen. I’m thankful that I was able to skate with him once about 15yrs ago here in LA ❤
He seems like such a genuine and pure soul. What a gift to the people of Earth! ♥ One of the few good hearted MILLIONAIRES out there.
I love rodney dude, don't even know they guy, don't even skate anymore. Just vibez the bro will live forever as a legend.
Bro his a legend
My personal favorite skater of all time the man made skateboarding cool to me among millions of others
Yeaaaaahh
Achieving the Rodney Mullen unlocks in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater were some of the greatest video gaming moments I had. I could watch him skate for hours, his style is so unique and it all looks so effortless.
truuuuuuuue +1
Bro I would turn my OG Xbox off and on over and over just so I could see Rodney's video parts in the intro lol.
@@djjazzyjeff1232 Haha, you know that you could just search for "THPS intro" here and would not have to fire up an old XBox? 🤣
then came along dawood song. he is pretty good. and don't forget andy anderson. another street/ freestyle dude with a ton of style
@@johnsmith-fz5pz No need to argue, the Mullen vs Song videos are classics, too.
I hope Rodney never gets forgotten
@@BPL1980 you've got a good point, but I guess another thing I could say is I hope people forever appreciate what Mullen did for the sport like noone else because I could imagine that being taken for granted given the current state of the scene
@@GabrielConstantinidesif Rodney gets forgotten, Skateboarding doesn't excist no more.
Rodney is by far the most influential skater of all time. He will be the first name to live forever.
Tony Hawk gets the limelight, for bringing skateboarding to the masses, but Rodney is the heart and soul of skateboarding.
I'm not even a skater but I know who he is. I did have friends that were skaters so I heard his name through them. He has to be one of the most significant skaters ever!!!
As Rodney tells the story, he first came up with the idea for the magic flip while he was practicing ollies. He bailed on one, and when he did the board flipped, landed on all four wheels and rolled away. He says it felt like the board was mocking him.
A few hours later he'd figured out how to do it on purpose and roll away. Thus the magic flip was born.
That's awesome.
Rodney is a true innovator, his influence on skateboarding cannot be overstated.
That what happens anything new is invented ,like BMX and G.T ,Like vehicle then racing a lot of it depends your age when things are invented.
Jonny & Rodney need to skate together. It's so great that you are taking the time to educate the younger audience of this wonderful history.
Just add Jamie Griffin in there and you got quite the legendary sesh from one generation to another
The more I see of Rodney Mullen, the more I get the feeling he was actually born on a skateboard. I find a lot of enjoyment seeing how much HE enjoys skateboarding.
This video gave me new appreciation for the skill and dedication it took to come up with these tricks and being able to land them consistently
Its insane to think how fluid he makes all of these tricks look. Such an influential person and the GOAT!
Greetings from midwest Brazil, South America. I consider him, if I'm not wrong about it, "the Pelé from skateboarding". So talented, I'm a fan of Rodney Mullen. He inspires me.
Also insane that he was the reason boards changed from 80’s fish shape to the more “freestyle” like shape that we have today. The most important skater ever.
he changed the trucks and wheels too. along with the board and all his tricks he invented and we have the greatest skater of all time
Mad props for introducing a new generation of skaters to Rodney's legacy and historic contributions to modern street skateboarding, especially because the dude's so famously humble and modest that he never talks up or promotes his own iconic achievements
in the late 90s he was so under rated in the youth. he was over shadowed by like muska, kambell, koston, and the like, But was always my all time favorite. Glad someone like you put the record straight. Mullen, the God of skateboarding!!!!!
also thats why you are my favorite modern skater!!!!!!
I got into skating in the late 90s because of THPS 1 and Rodney's part when you beat it.
Who says that? Okay, maybe of handrails and stuff like that you mean!? But if u already had internet, you're blown away from Rodneys clips!
I think guys like Muska, Jamie Thomas etc were different because they’d just huck it over 20 sets and hit rails off roofs etc. Not as technical but balls to the wall risky in a way techy fliptricks are not. Respect to them all.
Its not a problem, trust.
I could watch Rodney Mullen for hours. I can't skate but I totally get what a genius this guy is.
Not to forget... your videos are very enjoyable, great work 👍🏻
The absolute GOAT. Nothing but love for Rodney.
Both of you get hero status in my world, thanks Johnny!
When Rodney inventing the ollie, everyone elso was looking at skating in 2D, he showed us that you can do it in 3D! And I think that truly underlines the impact Mullen had.
I was lucky enough to grow up learning to Skate at the same time as Rodney Mullen, Tony Hawk etc were in their prime, recently started back up again and love it. Managed to land 360 flips again at 45, really happy
Being a skater starting in the late 80s and having my prime in beginning of the 90's it was such a big inspiration to see RM on video. Impossible and late-shove-it, then late-flips. Not only before but during anyone else, we were just trying to catch up.
A real sense of a mastery that you know you can only hope to achieve watching his old videos. nowadays there is someone out there who can and will try or do any trick (shout out this channel) back then, watching Rodney work was like watching Houdini preform magic no one can do and would take years to master.
I love the skateboard history lesson! 100% would love to see more content like this, chronicling the roots of modern skating.
Rodney is skateboarding
Rodney is my favorite skater for a reason. Still manages to make my head explode.
This should be shown in all schools as education. So well done and interesting. Thanks Jonny!
I’ll never forget the 411 issue 23 that had the Rodney Mullen Profile. I still have the vhs and I cherish it. I fell in love with the GOAT 30 years ago and still thank him for everything he’s continuing to contribute!
I started skateboarding in 2002 and ended up in 2004 coz my family won't let me and Rodney Mullen is my inspiration after I play Tony Hawks Pro Skater in PS1 and buy some magazines and read it with my friends, watching skate videos like Flip really sorry Etc. I miss the old days no social media now I am 32 years old still my favorite and his skate videos is like a fine wine.
Watching from the Philippines 🇵🇭 keep it up. 🤜
Love the thought process in this. I would love a 30 min interview with you and Rodney. What would you ask him that hasn't been asked a lot of him?
When I started skateboarding back in 1998 I was just your casual riding type boarder. A year later I saw my first video of Tony Hawks, then later on saw his 900 spin I was inspired to do better. In 2001 I met a guy in a local area who was also a skater and he was looking at me and said “pretty good” and then he showed me some of his tricks. He then asked me who I idol and obviously I said Tony and then he said Rodney was his idol. I was 9 years old had no idea who he was and he told me he invented the tricks I learned. I honestly thought Tony invented everything. He invited to this skate shop and I met some pretty cool people and then they showed me VHS tapes of Rodney. I was mind blown that this was the creator of most of the tricks we see today and I’m blessed to have learned when I was younger some of his tricks. He was obviously a true inspiration and gifted man to learn all this and showcase it too the world to learn and see.
You know Rodney is a legend when you see him doing those tricks and he makes them look so easy to do.
The video “The best of Rodney Mullen” is one of the most legendary ever
I am old enough to say that I used to watch new Mullen movies coming out with Powell Peralta. It was mind boggling. And now I see you do the same amazing tricks that Rodney did. Be proud of your achievements! I broke more board and rolled many an ankle attempting these....lol
I'm a huge fan and am glad he's still being talked about!
I didn't realize Rodney invented all of these tricks. I loved skating as a kid and Rodney was my favorite by far. I eventually quit skating and picked up guitar, which I don't regret, but I still love watching Rodney skate.
Making a video of all of these tricks chronologically is an awesome idea
I remember being a kid in the late 80s and the neighborhood kids passing around a grainey vhs tape of Rodney doing these tricks. Spent hours watching this with my friends. Good times.
It is inevitable that one day in the near future that Jonny and Rodney will do a video together and it will be epic, i have no doubt that Rodney is aware of Jonny, it is just a matter of time for them to collab
That would be so cool!
I'd like to see Rodney , Jonny, and Alexander skate together
LEGEND.....I used to watch any dodgy Cassette tape I could get my hands on of him skating in the early 90's
all the way here in South Africa...I went on to get sponsored and never placed worse than 3rd ever in competition.
Sadly my love of motorbikes put me in Intensive care and I have a dodgy Right leg with multiple steel pins for the last 26 years.
I sit on the sidelines ....always a fan....and will always be thankful that he helped pave the way....There will never be another innovator like Mullen.
Rodney is the most influential skater to me.
Such a beauty to see his way of moving with the board !
I just can only admire and be inspired by him.
The volume of tricks that Rodney has brought to the table of skating is plentiful to say the least. I really appreciate the way you hold such profound respect for him. Great video, Jonny! Thanks for doing what you do, bud!
Really loved this! Thank you Jonny. Really appreciate your time.
He is the man!!
Love all your videos!! Thanks for pumping them out when you can
To see a Rodney Mullen part in the 90's was absolutely mind -blowing astounding - For people that never skated , I wish there was a way to explain the difference with watching his video parts compared to a "normal" pro-street skater :)
You really inspired me to push hard the Casper slide for a full year and see if I can get it, i hope to be able to post it to you before 18 Dec of 2023 🤘 I will try my best 🙏🙏 big respect to you men and all skaters out there 🤘🤘 sending
Love your videos, love your efforts. The fact that you show us the fail fail fail fail fail before success really reinforces how important PRACTICE is. Thank you for being so honest in your videos.
Jonny, I just wanted to say that I can watch you skate for hours (and I have) even though I’ve never even owned a skateboard. I love your dedication to mastery. Mit der wunderschönen Kulisse eine unschlagbare Kombination 🏔️
Danke :)
I cant imagine what skateboarding would be like without Rodney.. We needed him just as much as he needed it.
Awesome, loving your work Jonny.
Bro, im 32 years young and i cant even tell you how many Rodney Docs ive seen in my life. but this, this one is Beautifully done.
Rodney took “Its a skill issue.” to the next level.
This video reinforces how much of a wizard Rodney Mullen is.
Killer vid. Love Rodney. The amount of sacrifice and patience it takes to skate like the both of you is commendible.
Yes, Mullen was a legend. When I watched his videos as a kid I was astonished. He did tricks that looked impossible lol. Show us a a compilation of your Rodney Mullen trick videos!
This is a great video. Old school Rodney Mullens videos with Giger doing and learning the tricks. I thoroughly enjoyed this.
he invented the 360 flip but nobody cared so he invented the double 360 flip so people can see it flipping instead of looking like a 360 shove and yet nobody cared until jason lee started doing it years later. legend.
That's also true for other Jason Lee tricks. Lee once remarked that he didn't even know that Mullen invented them, haha. Also: Mullen perfected (didn't invent) the darkside, which is overlooked. When you see a darkside done without hands full-on down a rail or across a ledge, that's a Mullen trick. The original darkside was not good. Now, I think about it, very few skaters can even do a full-on Mullen darkside.
Thank you for showing love to the man! Legend.
Always amazes me how humble Rodney is when people talk about his innovation. It's unreal what he's done for modern skateboarding.
P.S. This style of video is really dope Jonny, your narration and editing are great!
thx for this video jonny !
i doesnt skate so much now but everytime i want to restart when i watch ur content
take care mate
Great video. Glad I came across your channel. I skated for some years back when I was younger. Mullen was my idol back then. I have to say, you’re pretty awesome as well.
Thank you for making this. Subscribed immediately!
Just bought a board again today. Been watching your channel for a few weeks and I can’t help but get back on the board.
I shattered my sliding/flicking ankle years ago so I’ll probably have to learn most things again switch. I’m up for it 🤟
Thank you for reminding me the joy of skating!
Love your channel! Awesome video!
Wonderful video! THANK YOU!
Really enjoyed this video - very well put together. I've been following Rodney for years and years (and you on Braille!). Excellent, professional level editing here ! Cheers !
Great video jonny!
Thanks you sir, great edit!!
Rodney Mullen led me to skating. Jonny Giger keeps me on my board. Thanks for another great video.
Excellent video, mate!
one of a kind brain to think of these things before anyone else, basically invented a whole sport
Nice Job Jonny! perfect video
A great homage to a legend. I don't think there is anyone out there with as much respect and technical skill as you to Rodney.
Bro, great video! I love all the info I had no idea about some of those tricks!
I really like these types of videos, Jonny. Keep it up! 😎
nice video jonny, love it!
I think I had never seen the 180 casper slide, such a hectic trick!
Thanks for having me gigggle in front of my screen in disbelief
Your channel is amazing bro !
Beautiful video!
Love the crisp sound in your slowmos!
Dude I've been watching you for years now awesome footage and super entertaining thanks for the content
the vid is amazing Giger, great awesome job 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great video, Man. Keep. Up the good work.
great video, great little trip down memory lane. also, your such an amazing skater. truly inspiring.
Rodney is the creator. One of the most humble people I've ever met
Even though I never skated, I embraced the culture as a teenager and loved filming it. Blows my mind to this day. As an overweight 28 year old it stills feels inspirational to me, much like watching drumming - Its infectious. Those good at it make it look impossible. Rodneys contributions…he more or less invented skateboarding as we see it.
i remembered watching his video on a vhr back in 99 and our jaw dropped when he did the casper slide. Rodney Mullen, Chad Muska, Daewon Song, Eric Koston, Tony Hawk and Steve Caballero were our heroes when we were kids
I love how you show footage of you landing 95% of the tricks. Great work
well done brutha, love your content, legend
Deine Videos über Rodney sind einfach immer allererste Sahne!
You are Goooood bro! And a super smart and awesome researcher and creator too man. Respect.
I think skating videos are some of the best films ever made by human beings. Especially the ones that are coupled with good music and photography, I just think a lot of them should get Oscars for how beautiful they are to watch 🎉
I really enjoyed watching your video! Use to skate when I was a kid almost 30 yrs ago never any good at it but I loved trying.
I'm an old BMX freestyler, and in 1986, I moved to Redondo Beach, CA. As luck would have it, Rodney practiced near the Redondo Pier when staying in Cali, right by where us BMX freestylers practiced. We called the place The Spot. I got to know Rodney a bit, and watched him practice when I was done each night, for a few weeks. He showed me half flip underflips then, in October or November of 1986. So... Ollie, flip board upside down mid air, grip tape against shoe laces, then flip back 1 1/2 flips to land. So he was doing flip-undeflip tricks WAY before the mid 1990's. Amazing guy. Still not sure what planet he's from.
Much respect from London England Jonny your a legend bro..
Thank you for the Lesson Master Jonny Giger 💎🌍🌀What a creative fresh idea 💡 for a video 💐
Beautiful Ollies in that section, Johnny. Perfection 👌🏻
My favorite skater of all time . Mullens clips on the tony hawks games blew my mind away . HIs manuals are incredible
Cool channel man I love it ! , Especially the Rodney Mullen Stuff it really takes me back to when I was a kid Skating! Well Done!
You have the best videos about Rodney Mullen.
Concise and educational tribute vid to the GOAT! Great work!🫡
This was sweet, jonny! I haven’t seen you do this sorta edited analysis-style video before (I’ll bet you have, I just missed it), but it’s a great mix up of your normal content!
Plus, some really tight editing! Not a wasted second in there, interesting and right to the point
Great vid. Mullen was one of my favorite skaters back in the day and this video shows everyone why.
Guter Stoff. Danke dafür, Jonny!
i just have to say, thanks for this video Jonny
