      I mean, to put things into perspective, Rodney Mullen is like 2 years older than Tony; so realistically, if Tony Hawk was 13 when it was invented, Rodney Mullen invented the kickflip when he (Rodney Mullen himself) was 15. Rodney Mullen was born in 1966 and Tony Hawk was born in 1968 , the kickflip was invented in 1983 , so Tony's math was a bit off there , it's still impressive a 17 year old invented the kickflip , and apparently it took him only a day to land it . Which makes it even crazier because he had noone to tell him how to do it . he just figured it out and landed it in 1 day

      Me. Too. Logically I knew he had to be much older, and yet I was still shocked that he wasn't a teen. It's because that was really the last time he was in the spotlight.       Ask any skater and they'll tell you how insane that is. Most skaters are neurotic about their boards and trucks being broken in and having just the right feel. Tony is always giving his away. He was doing that even back when he was competing regularly.

    Met Tony Hawk recently and I can answer: YES, he is an extremely nice guy. Signed a board and a photo for me, then posed for a pic and had a little chat with me, all with a smile even though I'm sure he was exhausted. KEEP ON CRUSHIN IT HAWK MAN!

    Through the course of my job, back in the early 2000s, I was in contact with Mr. Hawk somewhat often. I can truly say, I was never witness to any rudeness or egotism. He consistently seemed to be a genuinely nice family guy.

      He’s talking about street skating though. He’s known for not being a very good street skater, so I think he’s cautious with saying he’s good at it because skaters and fans will flip on him. He’s known for vert and he’s very adamant on staying in his lane, which is commendable.

      It's kind of like the old "the more you learn, the more you realize how little you know" thing. He's obviously a master level skateboarder, but as a result he also walks in the same circles as other master level skateboarders who specialize in other areas (like street skating, as that particular question was asking about). So to an average skateboarder he'd probably still come across as a demigod while skating out of his element, but he's going to be comparing himself to people who are on an even higher level at it.

      Cyan Light Exactly. When I see him street skate, I’ve seen enough street skating to see he’s a bit sloppy, but it still looks insane and skilled. Street skaters would disagree though and tony obviously respects it as a separate art form.

      Well the Tony Hawk Pro Skater games were universally praised and played by people who never skateboarded, so he has great name recognition.
      Basically he is at the level of fame where most people would say "Tony Hawk" if you asked them to name a skateboarder. To many people Tony Hawk basically IS skateboarding lol
