Eight years ago Gareth Bale made the record transfer to Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur for £85million. A good move for Real as they won four Champions League titles. But what about Spurs? What did they win? And what did they do with the money?
This is a brief history of Erik Lamela, Christian Eriksen, Paulinho, Roberto Soldado, Nacer Chadli, Etienne Capoue, and Vlad Chiriches - The Gareth Bale 7

This was like clicking the “where are they now” button on the transfer section in an FM save. Very good
Watching regular Tifo content with Joe's soothing voice after watching the barely restrained insanity that is Tifo IRL is absolutely hilarious. It's like looking at a quiet-seeming office building and then going in to find a fancy dress party where everyone's doing whippets and eating pogs.
Yeah Tifo IRL has been an unmitigated success IMO, having the guys have more of their individual personalities on display isn’t what I was expecting but I’m absolutely loving it.
@@UTubeMinority i love tifo Irl for that very reasin😍 tifo is very amazing and informative.

Joe's pronunciations are really hit-and-miss. At one time I'd be like "Oh he's great at pronouncing foreign clubs" and a minute later you'll hear "Osuana and Kapoo"

part of me think Levy doesn't wanna sell Kane cause he knows how dumb the signings they made with that Gareth Bale money
We have Paratici now so I think they'll be better if Kane does go.
He doesn't want to sell to City when he knows they can pay his pricetag and still haven't gotten close on any of their bids. He feels that he's being disrespected by City at this point, and I can't blame him.
At least Eriksen was amazing for Tottenham, until he said _i quit_ after losing the Champion's League final

Osuana? No, it's Osasuna.
i cannot believe he pronounced that wrong😂
I thought I was the only who got that. Let me get this right it's OSA-SU-NA not OSU-ANO?
I am not here to defend the guy just because he's brazilian like me, but because Paulinho was never used how he was supposed to. Comparing him to Lampard just proves my point.
When playing for Corinthians, he was mainly a defensive midfilder who would ocasionaly innitiate transitions to counter attacks with short passes to the wingers, and those were the most giffted playmakers of the team. But here is the catch: Those wide players were technical on the ball yet a bit SLOW. Having such players receiving the ball wide gave Paulinho enough time to move inside the opposition box, for both crosses and through passes. That was lethal since at the time, Corinthians had very offensive-minded fullbacks capable of crossing the ball well, and Paulinho had amazing aerial presence. That team also played slow paced possession football at times, wich only favoured Paulinho's slow tempo OFF the ball. If the team lost possession on the attack, he would then press higher to give the team enough time to recover their positions. Often he'd win tackles in front of the opposing goal, meaning free time on the ball to try those long range shots that seduced many, but that only worked for Corinthians style of play, that created scoring chances down the flanks leaving the middle exposed.
It was never the case for the Spurs. Since their wingers were fast paced, they would play on transition, also Totenham fullbacks were defensive minded wich meant little to no overlapping down the flanks, and the worse thing for him was how Premier league teams were obssesed with marking, specially in front of their own box, and that took a lot of space away from Paulinho.
But of course, in the end he was never as good as Lampard. If he was, everything would've been fine. But anyway, Tottenham signing him was kinda dumb. They bought a very specific TACTICAL player by only analyzing his NUMBERS alone. I doubt they watched any of the Corinthians matches on that season. They didn't even care to. That's how insignificant our "domestic" football is to europeans, i guess... ;3;
But much love from Brazil, Tifo. I really enjoy your videos and i wish you all the best!
Tottenham should've spent the Bale money on the Athletic subscription. Much better return on investment ⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽

Okay Joe, you're not fooling anyone 😂
Being one of the cheaper of the Gareth Bale 7 always added to my love for Eriksen especially since he was not highly touted and was even on the verge of being let go by Ajax, but then became one the best creators in England only behind De Bruyne imo, vital to Poch's teams and went on to win Serie A. I am not a spurs supporter especially after Poch got fired but I have an eriksen shirt and was so devastated watching that Denmark game in the Euros. Stay strong, happy, and healthy King we need you for 2022 in Qatar even if it is just in the stands cheering the team on. Danish Dynamite!
de Bruyne is the Belgian Eriksen
I had no idea he was that cheap. Absolute bargain for spuds
There's still a massive Eriksen-shaped hole in our team even now, truly magnificent player and always amazing to watch.

I really want to believe these 7 players meet up every year at an undisclosed location to curse Bale out for linking their names with this transfer forever - preferably over a really poor game of golf.
Fantastic idea for a video btw - Kudos Tifo 👏🏽
Soldado would probably miss that meeting as well
You could do a similar video on Luis suarez’s departure from Liverpool and who the reds brought in to replace him the following season
Lamela's illustration DID NOT look like him 😂 but you guys are great, when a critic starts nitpicking that's how you know you're doing pretty much everything right. Keep it up! Been a sub since 10k
who are you like
Think the video downplays Eriksen a bit. Wasn’t just a key player for Pochettino, he was arguably Spurs’ best player some seasons even when Kane formally established himself. My memory must also be foggy because I didn’t remember him being on the outs like that at Ajax. I remember, for me, he was by far the most exciting purchase Spurs had made with the Bale money.
Lamelas two Rabonas and his constant ball rolls make up for every other failed signing, he is priceless
I think having Gigi Becali's name mentioned on Tifo together with his imprisonment is rather legendary!
free gigi! :))
Paulinho was a success in his only season at Barca - regular starter, very consistent, won the double.
It's still really shocking how far Gareth Bale's fall from grace has been. Watching that solo effort run that lead to giving Real the lead in the 2014 Copa del Rey Final was so fast that I couldn't believe the pace on him. Now seven years and change later, the man is seriously contemplating retirement once his contract ends. It's a real stunner to me.
Happens to a lot of players. I wonder if it's a mental thing after winning everything and being rich. Or a physical thing where you burn so bright you can't do it your whole career. Examples would be Owen and Ronaldo
@@london_james Ronaldo?? More like ronaldinho....

When Soldado wasn't working out as a striker, he should've been moved to a creative midfielder (like Fabregas when he was at Chelsea). He had the Spanish style slick passing and touches. Ranking the 7 acquisitions:
1. Eriksen
diiiiiiiiisssssssstant 2. Lamela
3-7. Everyone else.

Soldado was a great striker back then, his play reminds me a lot of David Villa, he just come to the wrong place and the wrong time, Kane has return that season and just take the wheel as the main man of the team.
Kane only got his chance cause soldado was so bad he had to be dropped
Great video and honestly 5-6 are actually pretty solid players.

Bale's all pink outfit from that summer was iconic. Tifo really don't miss

This was a good video, would have liked to know how they impacted Spurs each season abit more tho, like where Spurs finished n stuff like that, ml tho 🙏
*Osuana* was my favorite of Soldado’s clubs!!
Love this!
Great explanation, but never heard of that superclub "Osuana" though.
Very informative
"Because of course it did." Bless you, Tifo.
Tbf the Bale money was done in installments over four years iirc. So last installment was in 2016. The Bale money boosted the annual transfer budget over that time.
In the 2015 transfer window, hey brought in alderweireld, son, alli and others. Over the longer term (which with the super transfers it has to be) it definitely brought Spurs up a level from a one man team to a good team.
Until last season of course :p
Some serious 'Cheap Panini' style illustrations this time around, fellas 😂
Paulinho did well at Barcelona, Felt you could talk about him a little more and elaborate on truly how bizzare his story is. But overall, good vide.
It didn't work out for him in England but don't get it twisted.
Paulinho was a BALLER.
I'd suffer it all again just for that rabona. I couldn't care less about the final result, it was worth the 6 years of waiting and no one will ever change my mind on it.
Next will be The Harry Kane's "insert here how many players"

Sad that Eriksen had to be named in this list of players. Alone, his eventual legacy for the club meant he was worth most, if not all, of the money from the sale of Gareth Bale. Was to Kane what Lampard was to Drogba/what Gerrard was to Torres.
Well, he was one of the 7 bought with the money that came from selling Bale.

Chiriches was such a crazy, crazy man for Spurs.

Thanks for remembering to tell us how much Spurs spent on Erik Lamela
Excellent content and topic to cover, but that Gareth Bale animation....I guess it looks vaguely like him.
The thumbnail is excellent
A known story well telled as usual
Chadli leaving even for the £ never made sense, he was important for that squad
I still think this was good business for Tottenham. They couldn't have replaced Bale with a similar level player. Spurs wasn't a destination for superstars then and it isn't now. So they've bought a bunch of players who could've grown into superstars like Bale did. And I think Eriksen was, even if they didn't turn such enormous profit on him like they did on Bale.
Tottenham were really unlucky with Paulinho. Even though the comparison with Lampard being outright ridiculous he's been a great player throughout his career tying Neymar for Brazil's top scorer in the 2018 WC qualifiers, and in my opinion the best player I've ever seen in making late runs into the box. Unfortunately for us, he chose financial stability of Chinese football over the spotlight of PL or European football. Anyways, put some respect on Paulinho's name!
How can i contact Tifo?? Thanks in advance!
The thumbnail is class 🤣

One thing I remember about Chiriches is people likening him to the Richard guy from the first Inbetweeners film

The thing is Tottenham has problems other clubs in the big 6 don't have. Tottenham is the only big 6 club with an English owner and investor, so they still gotta portray good numbers. They might have bought 7 players there, but the salaries were minimal because the competition was almost none.
