    Eight years ago Gareth Bale made the record transfer to Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur for £85million. A good move for Real as they won four Champions League titles. But what about Spurs? What did they win? And what did they do with the money?
    This is a brief history of Erik Lamela, Christian Eriksen, Paulinho, Roberto Soldado, Nacer Chadli, Etienne Capoue, and Vlad Chiriches - The Gareth Bale 7

    I am not here to defend the guy just because he's brazilian like me, but because Paulinho was never used how he was supposed to. Comparing him to Lampard just proves my point.
    When playing for Corinthians, he was mainly a defensive midfilder who would ocasionaly innitiate transitions to counter attacks with short passes to the wingers, and those were the most giffted playmakers of the team. But here is the catch: Those wide players were technical on the ball yet a bit SLOW. Having such players receiving the ball wide gave Paulinho enough time to move inside the opposition box, for both crosses and through passes. That was lethal since at the time, Corinthians had very offensive-minded fullbacks capable of crossing the ball well, and Paulinho had amazing aerial presence. That team also played slow paced possession football at times, wich only favoured Paulinho's slow tempo OFF the ball. If the team lost possession on the attack, he would then press higher to give the team enough time to recover their positions. Often he'd win tackles in front of the opposing goal, meaning free time on the ball to try those long range shots that seduced many, but that only worked for Corinthians style of play, that created scoring chances down the flanks leaving the middle exposed.
    It was never the case for the Spurs. Since their wingers were fast paced, they would play on transition, also Totenham fullbacks were defensive minded wich meant little to no overlapping down the flanks, and the worse thing for him was how Premier league teams were obssesed with marking, specially in front of their own box, and that took a lot of space away from Paulinho.
    But of course, in the end he was never as good as Lampard. If he was, everything would've been fine. But anyway, Tottenham signing him was kinda dumb. They bought a very specific TACTICAL player by only analyzing his NUMBERS alone. I doubt they watched any of the Corinthians matches on that season. They didn't even care to. That's how insignificant our "domestic" football is to europeans, i guess... ;3;
    But much love from Brazil, Tifo. I really enjoy your videos and i wish you all the best!

    Sad that Eriksen had to be named in this list of players. Alone, his eventual legacy for the club meant he was worth most, if not all, of the money from the sale of Gareth Bale. Was to Kane what Lampard was to Drogba/what Gerrard was to Torres.

    I still think this was good business for Tottenham. They couldn't have replaced Bale with a similar level player. Spurs wasn't a destination for superstars then and it isn't now. So they've bought a bunch of players who could've grown into superstars like Bale did. And I think Eriksen was, even if they didn't turn such enormous profit on him like they did on Bale.

  • @felipealmeida8953

    Tottenham were really unlucky with Paulinho. Even though the comparison with Lampard being outright ridiculous he's been a great player throughout his career tying Neymar for Brazil's top scorer in the 2018 WC qualifiers, and in my opinion the best player I've ever seen in making late runs into the box. Unfortunately for us, he chose financial stability of Chinese football over the spotlight of PL or European football. Anyways, put some respect on Paulinho's name!

    The thing is Tottenham has problems other clubs in the big 6 don't have. Tottenham is the only big 6 club with an English owner and investor, so they still gotta portray good numbers. They might have bought 7 players there, but the salaries were minimal because the competition was almost none.
