In 2013, everyone knew who the third best player in the world was. Gareth Bale was coming off a career season with Tottenham and was just about to turn 24, attracting interest from every big club in Europe. With outstanding pace, strength, and a vicious shot from range, Bale was regarded as the closest thing to Cristiano Ronaldo in world football, and Real Madrid paid a then world record €100m fee to pair the Welshman and the Portuguese in a new-look attack, which would go on to deliver the club’s 10th Champions League title that season and a further 3 over the next 5 years.
But despite his enormous trophy cabinet, Bale’s career in Madrid is widely considered a disappointment. Unloved by coach and fans, the winger has been a bit-part player for years and perennially linked with a move away which never quite arrives. But how did the most exciting player in the world become surplus to requirements? And why didn’t the Real faithful ever fall for a man who had been so easy to love at White Hart Lane?
Hello and welcome to Everything You Need To Know, the new series where we give you the story behind some of football’s defining moments, and today we bring you the story of Gareth Bale.

    • @Fran-tg5yp
      @Fran-tg5yp Před 4 lety +8

The reason fans don't like Bale playing golf is because he has made it so clear that he cares more about golf than the team or football as a whole. They aren't mad that he has a hobby, their mad because he thinks he is entitled to do whatever he wants because Real Madrid either has to pay him 51 million euros to buy out his contract or find someone who is willing to buy him and pay him that exact salary, and no team is going to pay that much for a player who doesn't even want to play football in the most successful team in the past decade. This is coming from someone who lived in Madrid for 8 years, it's disgusting how Bale has used his enormous wages as a hostage against Madrid. Imagine if Messi suddenly started playing tennis and went out and said: "If Barcelona doesn't want me they will have to pay me 51 million euros, in the meantime, I'm going to be playing tennis. Why should I care about playing football if I've already won every possible trophy for Barcelona?"

@@Fran-tg5yp Think you misunderstood. He wants game time but without getting game time what else is there to do? The flag "Wales, Golf, Madrid" doesn't mean he doesn't like playing football. A quality player like him, would want quite a lot of game time but he doesn't get it. Also, he's always getting criticism off the fans and media because he's foreign and not always at his best. If the fans don't like him, he's very much entitled to play golf for the 2 years left on his contract and go to the Chinese League after and get paid even more but he will actually play. Also, Madrid are the ones who wanted to keep him as they decided to pull out of the negotiations with the Chinese team. If Madrid aren't gonna let him go, but won't play him, he can play Golf all he likes and then turn up on a cold wet night in the CCS and play like he wants to play football.
Don't know if you watch Wales games (as Im welsh I go to all home games) but there's a reason for that passion he shows for Wales compared to playing for the biggest club in the world

Doubt you and your people have watched the games he's played in? His goals per game at Real Madrid is nearly 1 in 2 games. The league is now very defensive and you have under 2.5 goals per game because of that. Zidane has it all to prove since Ronaldo left and he's about to go out to Man City in the champions league once football gets underway

LMAO, disappointing? Bad career? Please he's a genius..
    1. 3 peat. champion league of modern time.
    2. He is a legend in his own country (Wales) and is constantly called up without having to prove himself on a club level.
    3. He's always getting his pay weekly and mind you, his wage is no peanuts..
    4. He gets paid to escape the weather in England and into the always sunny Spain.
    5. He get to do what he love playing golf in a beautiful country and weather.
Lastly, do you believed in lucky charm? Charms that bring you good luck.. let me tell you, bale is the lucky charm for Real Madrid. Before bale came to RM what did they win? RM is constantly losing to Barca, even that 5-0. That is the RM that consist of Ronaldo, benzama, ozil, di maria, Ramos, pepe and the list goes on.
Once bale came.. the table has turn isn't it? Once Bale came RM won everything and overtake Barca as the king of Spain.
Bale don't even have to play, he just bring good luck for RM. Something are not meant to be explainable, this instant is one of them.

As a Madrid fan I can say that Bale is worth every bit we paid for him in transfer and wages. In comparison PSG, United, and City have all spent close to a billion each this past decade and that a grand total of zero UCL titles to show for it.
The bernabue jeers him now but we once sang his name with great joy and anticipation. Nobody can change what has happened in the last few years. Similarly, no one can take away what Bale has done for us. He is a Madrid legend through and through and in a few years, I hope we can all look back at his time in Madrid with great fondness.

I remember Guti said when Modric was linked with Real, that he was not good enough. After Real got Modric and then Bale from Spurs, they been more succesful than they ever was with Guti. Modric is probably the best deal ever. But the Bale deal was also great. He has scored a lot of important goals for Real. And I understand why he don’t care for Real anymore, when the fans goes against him just months after scoring the best CL goal of all time in a finale.

I'm a Barcelona fan and I have to admit I really like Bale esp in the BBC formation when he first came in I can even remember the conflict with Ronaldo as they were both as equally good and shared a similar playstyle with the quick counters and high sprint gameplay. But that's just that you can not have two Ronaldos in the same team. Christiano did edge him but I'm sure if he had the same level of commitment, fewer injuries and playtime they would be on par
