    Jack Grealish has signed for Man City. We all know that. But how did that move come about?
    How long has Guardiola admired Grealish? How did Villa come to a valuation of £100 million? Who else was involved in the deal?
    The Athletic’s Gregg Evans, David Ornstein and Sam Lee explain.

    • @songbird5842
      @songbird5842 Před 2 lety +66

      Every player gets rotated, that's why you invest in squad depth. Multiple sales + Sancho sell-on clause also freed up plenty of money. Grealish is going to be one of our key players for the next six years at least, Pep is going to unleash his potential. He won't play every game in a season because we don't want to inflict and persistent injury problems on him, nor do we want to rely on him to the extent that, for example, Man U. rely on Bruno.

    • @mafiousbj
      @mafiousbj Před 2 lety +34

      @@songbird5842 I don't remember Messi or CR7 being rotated much at their peak in Spain, save for games when most of the main squad was subbed out to rest (which definitively helped to keep their scoring so high)
      The thing is, people are trying to normalize spending 100 M on a bench player the club really didn't need. If you truly wanted squad depth they could have bought 3 30 M players and have 10 M to spare, but I guess grabbing headlines and merchandising are key parts of this signing too, not just the sporting side.

      £100m was the minimum value JG was worth to Villa. He helped us get promoted and kept Villa up in the PL for two seasons. That is a guaranteed £300m of PL television money he helped to generate during our return to the top flight.
      Once he became the nations hero at the Euro's, his value only accelerates during the rest of his 20's. That is unless he gets seriously injured over the next few years. He only started once for England during the Euro 2020 tournament. The more his personal numbers go up over the next 2 seasons, the more likely that price holds or even increases. He hasnt even played in the CL yet. Aguero + David Silva now gone and De Bruyne is now 30. Grealish is the potential replacement for their creativity/goals, along with another new striker when City sign one.
      Mbappe didnt even win the French league last season, with Neymar, Icardi, Di Maria and Verratti backing him up. He didnt score in any game for France during the Euro's after starting all their games. France were knocked out by Switzerland on pens.

The reason ppl are saying it was unnecessary is bcoz city already have more than 3+ players in the positions grealish plays, sterling foden on the left
      de bruyne bernardo gundogan in the centre and ferran torres mahrez in the right channel.. thats why nobody criticized city when they signed nathan ake. That deal reeks of desperation and is a very bad deal but since he was atleast cheap and was going to be a bench player anyways it was fine.
      In case of grealish youre paying 100 mil for taking away villa's best player and villa will be handicapped for the 3 seasons until they don't get the full money. And what was the transfer that caused that inflation across the European game? Neymar’s to PSG. It was the highest % spend over the previous world record fee in the modern game, which considering how high transfer fees already were prior to it is ridiculous. These thing dictate market value. The Grealish fee is now being used as a benchmark for the like of the Kane deal - i.e. if Grealish cost x, this player now must cost y.
      I’m not saying the clubs following suit aren’t being daft either, but if you can’t see the damage PSG and City are doing specifically, then your opinion has no weight to it.
      The thing is these fees that they pay are in fact purposefully strategic, done to actually drive inflation, because they know they are the two clubs who can actually spend at that level, which reduces competition in the market place.
