Bruce’s Beach: Land Returned to Black Family After 98 Years

  • The Bruce family contacted Public Counsel in 2020 to explore whether there was a legal remedy to return land that had been stolen from their ancestors nearly 100 years ago by the City of Manhattan Beach. Our team helped oversee the legal research and advocacy for this victory, and coordinated with pro bono attorneys from Kirkland & Ellis; Munger, Tolles & Olson; and Sidley Austin. Throughout the two-year journey, we stayed connected with the family and are so excited to have helped facilitate this historic victory!

So happy this family land, was returned back to them. Now, we need to help the rest of the "Black" (Negro, Colored, etc) families, across the U.S. that were in similar situations! I say "Black" with other bywords in parentheses because that's how we were/are classified. It's never too late.

Wonderful, justice at last! So many of us have lost generational wealth through use of immanent domain. My great grandfather had 100 acres stolen from him through immanent domain.

It's so hard for us African Americans. Calls that don't get return because their trying to find out your race behind the phone ect. People will never understand, they'll just continue to roll their eyes and ignore us.

It was their best way of gaining financially from it because current codes prevent any type of building or expanding.

Imagine, all of those families that also lost property that rightfully belonged to them. It’s been said, countless of families lost property that should have rightfully been returned. Unfortunately, in most instances they’ll find some type of loophole pleading they ATTEMPTED to locate family members when in fact they had no interest in doing so.

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼. Now la has one more to fix. All the homes taken over by eminent domain to make room for dodger stadium. Many Hispanic families were also left in ruin once the city came to take their land. Some got paid, some got carried out handcuffed as they had to watch the bulldozers knock down everything they’ve ever known. Restitution is the only way

I will be so glad when these people pay for all the atrocities and evil deeds that happened to our families. And is given back in turn to the heirs of these monsters . and they pay for the sins of their mothers and fathers and so on and so forth . We have been paying for our ancestors sin. I don’t hold a grudge but the Bible explains it best!
