    In 1912, Charles and Willa Bruce bought a piece of land by the beach in Manhattan Beach, California. A resort was built on that land for Black beachgoers to enjoy at a time when beaches were segregated.
    What became of that resort is a tragedy that is a prime example of systemic racism.

      @dpeasehead Před 3 lety +5

      @@tmilesffl Maybe that's because America did a really good job of preventing black ownership for most of its existence. You cannot take from people who do not have. I would be quite willing to suggest that the million or so acres taken from black farmers since 1900 in addition to urban renewal which largely targeted black people from coast to, along with the denial of access to the GI Bill and home loans have all done more harm to the black community as a whole than eminent domain has done to white people. That monument is a typical example of why I have little patience with those who defend monuments as precious and priceless pieces of "history" which are to be revered and maintained "as is" until the end of time and defended against any forms of criticism. If I was a stranger to that area or to American or Californian history and I had to depend on the words written on that plaque to tell me the actual history of what was done to the Bruce family, I would be as ignorant of that history when I finished reading it as I was before I read the words on it. And that, unfortunately, is the goal of most historical monuments in the US, selling slogans and defending the comforting (to many, anyway) myths of American goodness and exceptionalism. I hope that this family and thousands of other black families retrieve what was taken from them "back when America was great."

    Manhattan Beach is directly west of Compton. Rosecrans (as in Kendrick Lamars' Rosecrans:) runs directly to the sea at Manhattan Beach.
    To erase its Compton connection, in the early 1980s Manhattan Beach changed the name of an east-west thoroughfare, COMPTON, to "Marine" Avenue. 😏
    Btw, the neighboring city of El Segundo, which is even more racist than Manhattan Beach, delayed the construction of the Century Freeway as long as possible to prevent a direct connection to Watts.
    In tandem, Manhattan Beach and El Segundo used their police departments to keep Black people out. For example, those cities positioned their police cars near the 405 freeway on and off ramps. Black motorists were pulled over and harassed.
    Reparations for the eminent domain seizure of Bruce's Beach is, as the LA Times reported, the "reckoning" which needs to happen--one of many other reckonings we need to see.

    Hopefully you respect my point of view. The whole generational wealth argument doesn't hold water.
    In a nutshell. ;
    Willa purchases to nice homes after bruce beach. One for her and one for her son Harvy, his son and wife. Charles died 1931. Willa then purchases two income generating properties . Willa dies in 1934 leaving their son Harvey with 2 very nice homes and 2 probably apartment buildings. ( small ones) and a good size bank account.
    Harvey loses all 4 properties and they each get auctioned off because he borrowed against them and could not pay the taxes. He loses EVERYTHING in a 10 year period. A big % of the black community also did because it was during America's worst depression ever. Willa got out and moved because she was smart. In 1919 and 1920 you had 4 other black resorts open up. Lake Elsinore was a huge success. Bruce's Lodge the last 4 years was not doing great.
    Generational Weslth ended with Harvey.
    70% of wealthy families lose all their wealth during the 2nd generation. 90% of families with wealth lose it the 3rd generation. To believe that 5 generations of Bruce's with non of them graduating college or having decent jobs would have just heald on to those beach lots is not realistic at all. If Willa did not move and continued to keep the Bruce's Lodge then when the depression hit she would have been stuck with 2 properties making payments on with fewer and fewer guest. She would have lost everything. The condemnation was the best thing that could have happened to her and Charles. They sold and got top dollar for their property just one year before the depression hit.
    It's just reality

    This happened all the time to upwardly mobile African Americans. Mostly they built highways after taking the land and properties.

    Right, the family would have been millionaire's if it weren't for the land being stolen . We all know that is complete BS . The family bought the property for $2,000 and they got $14,000 for it .

      The truth is never heard or excepted, this video isn't even the whole truth, just feeds a narrative. The truth is that 26 land owners were forced to sell their properties along with the Bruce's, in total only 6 of them were black, why no mention of this? 20 non black Manhattan beach land owners were paid less than the Bruce family and forced to move also but no one wants to hear nor cares about the truth.

    The county seized the property under eminent domain and paid a stipend for it. This has happened throughout history and still happens today to people of ALL races. The urban renewal of the 70's took many properties the same way for mall developments and the governments only paid pennies on the dollar. Lets not pretend this was something that only happened to black people. If the family was paid for the property there is no way you can go back and pay the decendants AGAIN for the same property as this would open the door for everyone who has had property taken in the same manner.

    • @musclecarmason
      @musclecarmason Před 3 lety +2

      Not once has anyone said this only happens to black folks, but you know very good well that this was racially motivated. It's people like you that float around the internet trolling to minimize what black folks in America have gone through and still go through. What happened to the Bruce family wasn't about any type of "community development", it was without a single doubt, covert racism under the guise of eminent domain, and you know it. They took the land. Not only that, they didn't build anything on the land for years, just left it vacant, and when they finally did do something with the land, they planted a patch of grass and built a parking lot and deemed it a park. Seriously, just stop with the madness, you know exactly why this happened, and trying to insert the "It happens to white people more" is asinine, of course it happens to white people more, because white people make up the largest portion of the US population and land owners, but we're not talking about white folks experience, because we hear about it everyday from birth, we're talking about the Bruce family, and many other black families that have had their lands stolen from them by overt and covert racism. God bless!!

    Thank you for this educational and eye opening video. My parents owned a house on a large piece of property near LAX in the early 1960's. The city of Los Angeles kicked them and their all white neighbors out via eminent domain too. That lot is worth at least a half million dollars now. Maybe I should sue the city for it no longer being in my family home and property. They obviously targeted an all-white neighborhood. I am certain that they purposly targeted an all white area, because this didn't happen to black or hispanic people who also lived by the airport in Los Angeles at the time. Again, thank you for a very informative and nicely done video; it has really opened my eyes to the injustice that my family too was subjected to.
