  • To right a historical injustice, Los Angeles County may return beachfront property, seized from a Black family nearly a century ago to descendants. In 1924, Manhattan Beach used eminent domain to remove Black landowners and shut down their resort that was attracting Black families to the area. Carter Evans has the details.

To me, the short answer is yes. The circumstances would of course need to be looked at on a case-by-case basis, and the city/county/state would likely need to make the owners of the property now "whole", but the right thing to do is to give it back.

My Wife & I(Black Lesbian Couple in our 40s) have been coming to the beach in the area of Bruce's Beach MORE since we read about the history several yrs ago. I grew up in Carson, lived in Torrance & Santa Barbara. I love to learn about Black ppls contributions to California(the state is named after an African Woman). We love visiting the area & our hearts warmed to notice the welcoming "Black Lives Matter" signs in the windows of ppls homes & home fronts. The signs saying this house believe in equality ect. So we felt comfortable. Last week we came out to have breakfast on the beach & as we were crossing tge street a White woman(w/ an old White woman passenger) in an old, beat up,blue pick up truck sped up as if she was going to hit us in the crosswalk! I was surprised & started to hurry across. I didnt get to look up until she was passed us(so I saw the back of the truck, "TRUMP" sticker 🙄). I had to ask my Wife if what I thought just happened, really happened. Breaks my heart but we will make a point to go out there as much as we can! Its f*ckin 2021 & the Bruce's ppl still cant be comfortable out there😔

Very insulting. Took a thriving business, leveled it and made into a park. Damn

  • @ferdinandalexander8053

Sorry, but this is ridiculous. Many people have lost their homes and lands due to eminent domain. They purchased the land for $1,200 and were paid $14,000, not a bad turnaround in those days. I have family that goes back on my Mother's side who are known to be the founder's of California. Gold was discovered on their property and they were pushed off their land by squatters, and never got a dime. California was Mexican at the time so any grants or treaties were null and void according to the U.S. courts. Where's my money? LOL

So the Mayor can spend 350000 in art but not give the family their business back? But we’re not racist. None of my all white friends would live here if we were racist.

"that COULD return the land" ?? Ya all know this is wrong but people still can't own up and try to fix the injustice?

These are celebrities' second/third residences. Many cops there racial profile as soon as you cross the boundaries from LAX into the area. I never knew about this piece of hidden history. I'm not surprised just sad and no longer see MB as a treasure.

The same thing is happening to many Americans - I am talking about the illegal foreclosures by people executing ultra vires acts and then illegally using the courts with zero rights to do so....and then getting courts to issue illegal judgments to remove families from their home with ultra vires activities.
