- Can you believe this anime is almost 10 years old? Time flies when you're neetmaxxing. Here's my review of Death Parade.

I remember this one being one of the last animes I was genuinely interested in back then

Death Parade is my favorite anime of all time. Especially cause it came out in 2015 I had 4 family members die in January that year and I was suffering through the worst depression I've ever had even went as for as to plan and write out my suicide note. The only reason I didn't go through with it was cause of this anime. I had to see what happened and the way it dealt with life and death and the question Decim ask " Did you live a fulfilling life" struck a nerve in me. I just remember thinking if I were to end it all today I couldn't say with a straight face I did live a fulfilling life. That ultimately saved me.
Live by Memento Mori now and when I'm going through a rough time I put on this anime to remind me that I still have a life to live and want to be able to say I lived a fulfilling life when it's all said and done.
Death Parade was so incredibly good, I remember crying every episode when you find out that you're led on with a lot of the characters and recommending it to my sister and best friend and them having the exact same reaction. It truly was one of the finest pieces I've ever watched and I still think about it often.

I think thats sorta part of the ambiguity of it, like its up to the person watching to decide what the better option is, also, like mentioned in the video, personally when watching it i thought it looked like they all went the same way

Another anime that has extreme competitions that end in death is Para Para: The Movie. I would highly recommend it if you haven't seen it yet.
I do, I loved it. It was one of the Animes that had me give modern anime a chance.

I remember watching the one shot episode and watching the episodes weekly and wishing for a season 2.
As a huge fan of the "game of death" genre, I really loved Death Parade but ended up being really disappointed by them dropping the episodic overdramatic micro-story nature of the series part way through. I should probably give it another rewatch, since I haven't seen it since around the time it came out, but the shifting in the series always left a sour taste in my mouth.

i actually really like this anime, sure its not really anywhere near perfect and does get a lot of complaints but for 12 episodes, i think it was something i really enjoyed and still think about sometimes.
So it was an interesting premise, but it didn't leave a strong impact like say, Angel beats.
Hey I still think about Angel beats from time to time. Mostly because of the Girls Dead Monster songs...

Such a fantastic series. And that one couple where one of em pretends to be "evil" so the other can go to "heaven." Sooo good.

I can see why some people would have a hard time finishing it. It can get a bit boring in the middle, but I assure you the pay off is worth it. But, I can completely get why you couldn't finish it. It really is one of those anime you either really love or think it's just okay to mid.

That anime felt underwhelming for me. They plant a lot of ideas but unfortunately do nothing with most of them in the end.
The style is totally sick tho, worth the watch.
I only sort of liked this series. I enjoyed the theme of the arbiter, Decim, learning about human emotions, especially in regards to empathy. We see through the series how black and white thinking he in judging people with Chiyuki pushing against that. Because is it really the best way to judge someone in the afterlife by pushing them into extreme and traumatic situations? And those last two episodes, with Chiyuki figure skating, the music accompanying that, and the debate of the false promise of regaining her life in exchange for another, it really was the cherry on top.
But everything else about the series just feels so bland. The concepts are there and it really tries to execute its own philosophy, but it just feels dull. Like a writer having a great idea for book, but getting bored midway through before pushing towards the ending with the same energy as they started with.
Like how you stated with the religious imagery, ‘it's there,’ and that is how I feel about most of the show. Maybe downsizing the cast or fleshing out the world a tad more would have been better. Or maybe restructuring the debate between Decims boss Nona and her boss, Oculus over the nature of arbiters and emotions would been more engaging. Instead, everytime there together, the visuals are nice but it just feels bland. Like “alright, heres there debate, yadda, yadda, okay, back to the next pair of dead people were judging.”
The OP is still a banger though and the animations is nice..

I'd say go with whichever you tend to prefer. The dub cast is pretty solid so if you like dubs then go with that. If you're not sure then just go with the sub it's still pretty good.
