  • We live in a world that for the most part, doesn't think it's that bad to take the Name of God in vain. How should we respond when we hear others take God's Name in vain?
    [Outline]
00:00 - Tim reads the question.
00:39 - Consider 1 Samuel 2 and the topic of honoring the Lord.
4:10 - Meaning of vain? To empty God's name of significance.
4:37 - Tim gives an example of being a new believer and seeing a movie that blasphemed the Lord's name.
7:48 - How to deal with others in the workplace who use God's name in vain?
10:17 - Should I tell the person who cursed, "You offended me!"?
16:13 - Do we have to expose sin in every single person when we see it?
17:00 - Honor the Lord and He Will Honor You

A guy I work with misused Jesus name while I was talking to him and I looked up and said "praise his holy name!" He said "what?!" and I said "oh, you said Jesus Christ and when I hear his name I can't help but praise his holy name". He and another guy who was there kind of laughed, and we went on with our conversation. He hasn't done that around me since, and he used to do it a lot! Of course, I am going to start doing that a lot when people I know misuse his name. Hey, if they can openly blaspheme Jesus name, I can openly praise his name! What kind of a world is it when its socially acceptable to use Jesus name like a cuss word, but it's frowned on by most to openly praise his name?

I will use what they say and turn it back on them.
If someone says "Oh my God," I will ask them is that really your God?
If someone says "God damn," I will say God will not damn you, until you stand before Him in judgement.
If someone says "Jesus Christ," I will comment that He is my Lord and Saviour.
    Etc.
You get some funny looks or worse, I don't make many friends, but who cares?
One aspect of taking the Lord's name in vain, could be how we pray, dropping His name after almost every other word. I know I find it somewhat wearisome when people use my name constantly. We can use His name as a linking word, and I don't believe that is honouring.
    However His name is wonderful.
Someone said recently to use Darwin's name when we feel a need to cuss and say, "Oh my Darwin," but I find it better to believe I have no need to cuss, when I drop the hammer on my foot or pinch my skin with pliers. A quick thank you is good enough, at least I can feel pain, or I can thank Him for working in my life that I didn't swear.
A girl spilt some hot coffee on her hand while she was serving at a McDonald's and gasped at the pain. I commended her for not swearing and she replied she was a Christian, and didn't swear, and for a few seconds we enjoyed fellowship.

This is a beautiful response! Especially the example of Jesus at the Pool of Bethesda. I’m just now really learning the concept of following the voice of God through the promptings of His Spirit, instead of just doing what WE think is right. We are His workmanship, and He created those works beforehand that we should walk in them. So it’s not our responsibility to correct every wrong we see, like Pastor Tim stated. It is our responsibility to honor the Lord and He will give us the grace to do that when necessary.

This has been a question I've been refraining from asking Tim, because to be honest I was afraid of what his answer might be. I deal with this all the time in the workplace. And sometimes I say something, sometimes I don't. At one job my coworker/buddy even, used to always says Jesus's name (like in an "oh brother" sort of way). It bothered me so much I found the opportune time to tell her. And I did it very nicely and respectfully and tactfully and it still felt like the most awkward thing ever. And it's not because I'm showing her who I am and what I stand for. It's because I'm telling her she's wrong and calling her out on something... and not just something, but something of that nature. Like I'm saying, "You know that thing you say all the time, that's really bad." It's like I'm embarrassing her. I've found other ways to bring it up to people and it's worked out okay. Like when someone apologizes for swearing, that's a good opportunity to bring it up like, "Yea, I realize it slips sometimes. I'm sort of used to hearing swearwords, I just don't like when God's name is taking in vain.".... then they realize they do that, and that they should try to stop that (at least around you). Other times it just feels like it would be almost inappropriate to say something... like just not a good time. So I personally think it's okay to let it slide provided you try to think of a time and place and way to bring it up at some point.

When people use the name of the Lord in vain, most of the time they use it in the context (in place) of a curse (swear) word. This can only be wrong (cursing is wrong anyway). Sadly, they are unaware of how wrong it is. We need to be discerning about when and where and how we choose to point this out to people. Would people use their mothers name as a curse word? probably not, most would be horrified at the thought.

  • @haroldmcbroom7807
    @haroldmcbroom7807 Před 3 lety +1

I realized that I had a decision to make, and that I would have to make that decision alone. The Bible says that a Light came into the World, but the world preferred the darkness. We are the minority here, until Christ returns to set things straight. There are family members, friends, coworkers, neighbors, and those we meet on the internet, that have not yet reached that point in their lives where they "feel" they need a savior, until they reach rock bottom, with nowhere else to turn. I have to censor my own thoughts, because though I am a Believer, my mind is not erased of all that I once said, nor all that ever watched, and heard others say, and often times my mind recalls images of things stored, to try and drag me back in. God has freed me from the lust of the eyes, and the lust of the flesh, and I know I'm free, because I can lay my head down at night, and go to sleep, but it doesn't stop the tempations, which are always around the corner, and at times they even find us in our dreams when we are most vulnerable to such attacks.
The Bible says the wicked can not sleep at night until they've sinned, and they lose sleep at night, until they've caused others to stumble. The wicked stumble therein the night not knowing what it is that causes them to stumble.
...I surmise, they stumble across the sins of one another, and sin has become so common, that it is considered normal, once considered normal even becomes protected by law as a "freedom", and these are not the inherit freedoms our founding leaders were speaking of when they had the word "Freedom" in mind. They believe that if morality has a right to exist, then immorality has an equal right.
All I can do is contorl my own mouth... So many ordained ministers that in one breath speak some of the most flattering words to God, and about God, but i nthe next breath when anger is in control such profanity comes out of their mouths, because they have been ordained by nothing more than a piece of paper, and not by God.

We cannot moralise unbelievers! Their minds have been blinded - 2 Cor 4:4. I said to a youth that I’d much appreciate it, if he didnt use my Saviour’s name to swear? He apologised straightaway. My point is: it is bad testimony to get offended, easily. Peter doesn’t get offended when the Lord told him: he still can’t get it? It is also bad testimony to preach morals instead of preach Christ. Christians in America can come across at times, as preaching morals to unbelievers instead of preaching Christ? Is that the case? Anyhow, if someone swore ‘JC’ you could consider using that to identify not who you are but who He is! That, He’s your Saviour & ask, hey, have you heard the best ever news? It can be a witnessing opportunity. Let’s all remember that all sin offends God, not us, so, we must be peaceable, patient & kind to reflect Him. It’s not about you.
Preach Christ if the Holy Spirit gives an opportunity. Even if not such an opportunity, pause & think: we are salt & light! Most people will probably look very surprised if you state the point calmly & politely & they will often apologise. Maybe, we Brits are different. I don’t know & am open to correction. But if you patiently & repeatedly make the same point (maybe something to the effect that Jesus heard him using his name in vain even though he loves you & has in fact, suffered & died for your sins) politely, like a BROKEN RECORD when a colleague swear before you, they will weary of your patience with them & with time, they will lessen the swearing, in your presence at least, & you would have been salt to rotten meat in that office. Broken record [method uses the very same old words, with patience] is one way forward, if the swearer is a colleague or client.

  • @truthclipsforhumanity8017

I am likewise inclined; brethren, do not allow wickedness to be spoken to you. My experience follows: If you overhear others speaking offensively then it is because you are doing things you shouldn’t, so satan has the right to taunt you, then it is not your business to intervene, but if someone is speaking and overtly offending you, or speaking to you, you should condemn it. .....But no explanations or going on and on, its peoples right to be wrong, just respond so as to cease the direct incursion to your peace.

@Tow Laro B.C.E. -- Stands for "Before Common Era" -- Fuc*-up... Not anything else. No Jew-- ever had the letter "J" in their name in 30 A.D... The letter "J" is from 1,520 A.D.-- and the English language... Hebrew does not contain vowels-- nor the letter "J"... Historians have no evidence of a historic Jesus dating from the early first century, even though many contemporary writers documented the era in great detail. Philo of Alexandria, for example, wrote in depth about early first-century Palestine, naming other self-proclaimed messiahs, yet never once mentioning a man named Jesus. Many other contemporary writers covered that era, yet there is not a single mention of any existence, deeds, or words of a man named Jesus.

    • @davidh.503
      @davidh.503 Před 3 lety +1

@Tow Laro This paragraph mentions that Jesus was foretold by the divine prophets, but Josephus does not tell us who those prophets were or what they said. This is religious propaganda, not history. If Jesus had truly been the fulfillment of Jewish prophecy, then Josephus would have been the exact person to confirm it.
And this is the "most important" historical evidence for Jesus!
The other phrase from Josephus that Righi and AP cite concerns James, the so-called "brother of Jesus," and is likewise flimsy. It says that a man named James was stoned to death, which is not mentioned in the bible. Many scholars believe the "brother of Jesus" phrase is a later interpolation, and that Josephus was referring to a different James, possibly the same James that Paul mentions in Acts, who led a sect in Jerusalem. Contradicting Josephus, Hegesippus wrote a history of Christianity in 170 C.E. saying that James, the brother of Jesus, was killed in a riot, not by sentence of a court.
Righi also cited Pliny the Younger, who, in the early second century (112), reported that "Christians were singing a hymn to Christ as to a god." Notice how late this reference is; and notice the absence of the name "Jesus." The passage, if accurate, could have referred to any of the other self-proclaimed "Christs" (messiahs) followed by Jews who thought they had found their anointed one. Pliny's account is not history, since he is only relaying what other people believed. No one doubts that Christianity was in existence by this time. Offering this as proof would be the equivalent of quoting modern Mormons about their beliefs in the historical existence of the Angel Moroni or the miracles of Joseph Smith--doubtless useful for documenting the religious beliefs, but not the actual facts.
Tacitus, another second-century Roman writer who alleged that Christ had been executed by sentence of Pontius Pilate, is likewise cited by Righi. Written some time after 117 C.E., Tacitus' claim is more of the same late, second-hand "history." There is no mention of "Jesus," only "the sect known as Christians" living in Rome being persecuted, and "their founder, one Christus." Tacitus claims no first-hand knowledge of Christianity. No historical evidence exists that Nero persecuted Christians--Nero did persecute Jews, so perhaps Tacitus was confused. There was certainly not a "great crowd" of Christians in Rome around 60 C.E., as Tacitus put it, and, most damning, the term "Christian" was not even in use in the first century. No one in the second century ever quoted this passage of Tacitus. In fact, it appears almost word-for-word in the fourth-century writings of Sulpicius Severus, where it is mixed with other obvious myths. Citing Tacitus, therefore, is highly suspect and adds virtually nothing to the evidence for a historical Jesus.
Such are the straws believers must grasp in order to prop up their myth.

I see you use other versions of the Bible other than the true Bible. KJV. Every believer should inform themselves about how we got the Bible. The KJV. Don't judge what I'm saying untill you look up Adullam films and watch the 3 films documentarys about how we got the Bible. The first film documentary is called, A LAMP IN THE DARK. And take it from there. You will never read any of the modern translations again. You will see who brought these modern translations about and see that Westcot and Hort were unbelievers and involved in the occult. Don't take my word for it. Be of the spirit of the Bereans and test all things as God's word teaches. Each of those 3 film documentarys are 3 hours long. But that should not put a true believer off who loves God's word. Tim I hope you will take the time to watch them to. God bless. Jeff.
