Why Is Taking the Lord’s Name in Vain Wrong?

  • There is a beauty in the fact that God shares his very name with us. He gives us his name so that we can call upon him in prayer, hold him in our hearts, and know we are not alone.
Today, Fr. Mike discusses the importance of reverencing this name. While the world throws this holy title around, we are called to have awareness of the power and the goodness of God. Fr. Mike explains that in recognizing the meaning of names like God, Jesus, and Mary, we honor them and all they offer us. As we walk through life as God’s children, his name should never be regarded as an afterthought but instead considered one of the greatest gifts he has granted us.

Whenever we hear the Lord’s name taken in vain, it is good to bow the head and say silently, “Blessed be the name of Jesus”. This way it can become a prayer on our part.

Cherry Wan - One thing we all need to realize is that we are sinners by nature as well as sinners by practice. The hardest thing for us all to do is to admit that we are guilty sinners before a holy God. We try to do our best and to control our tongues. We are wasting our time completely. Even if we could manage it, the Bible is clear that 'All our righteousnesses are like filthy rags in the sight of God'. Also it says in Romans ch. 3 v 23: For there is no difference, for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God'.
That is the bad news. Here is the good news. Jesus said: 'I am come, not call the righteous, but sinners to repentance'. 'The Son of Man is come to seek and to save that which was lost'. The apostle Paul reminds us: 'This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief'.
For by grace (God's unmerited favour) are we saved, through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works lest anyone should boast'.
Ask God to save you, for Christ's sake and glory. (John ch. 6 v 37).

Since have returned to confession on a regular basis, for the most part, I have corrected myself of the very bad "habit" of saying the "Oh my G..." Now when I accidentally say it I immediately notice and am sorry I did say it. Then I go to confession and I accuse myself of taking the Lord's Name in vain. Since I returned to confession I am hyper aware of how grave the sin is and it now bugs me a lot when my wife says it. I used to fear confession. Now, thanks to the Holy Spirit's help returning to confession, I LOVE confession. It a GREAT grace that God has given us to help us become better persons! Knowing you have to confess your sins week after week is a good deterrent from sinning.
My attitude has changed towards confession Today I find it appalling that Catholics almost never go to confession anymore when it truly helped me to become a better person! I now have the inner peace I spent years praying for!!! Had I known how to find this peace, I would have returned to weekly confession years ago. God is SO GOOD to have given us confession!
