I'm an Anglican Priest in the Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island and I get to serve in the Parish of St Margaret of Scotland, in the beautiful city of Halifax, NS, that sits on the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq people.
My pronouns are he/him/his. My theology is primarily Christo-centric - Jesus is at the centre and it is against Him that all values are bounced off. I believe all people are created in the image of God and are children of God and are heirs to the throne of God - no conditions - therefore every single person we meet deserves our love, and respect.

One of my guiding lights in faith is a teaching of Jesus when he said in my Father's house there are many mansions. I have interpreted his words to mean accepting diversity is fundamental tenet of God's plan.

Diversity, yes! Just look at the animal kingdom, and the variety of trees and plants our Creator brought into being. I think He enjoys the artistic process of creating and has a sense of humor as well as beauty! And as for scripture, I like when Jesus said that there was much more He could tell them, but they would not be able to bear it (John 16:12). He knew that the spiritual journey takes time, and that local culture and entrenched beliefs would not be swiftly discarded.

I just looked up the verse in Exodus and I have an older Bible I've had it for close to 50 years now so it does say we should not take the lord's name in vain. I like what you are saying about the translation that you have I think it gives it a deeper view into what maybe God is trying to impart to us. Your talk today is brought me back to a thing that a Roman Catholic priest a wonderful man who was teaching a course on the synoptic gospels that I took. He said that in one of the gospels Jesus said to a demon to shut up not to use his name and I didn't think too much of it at the time as to why Jesus had said that but the priest said the reason is that the name of Jesus or the name of God coming out of the mouth of the demon is like a curse word. It is a good thing if we remember how we are using the name of our Lord we need to be careful and how we use it. Not so much to curse someone but I am reminded of some of the false prophets called upon God to put Donald Trump back into the White House back in the 2020 election. To me that would be using the lord's name in vain and that sort of thing will incur God's judgment.😊

It irks me when people look at that passage in Jeremiah and say "It means that God knew us as soon as we were conceived, " NO! It means that God knew us even *before* we were conceived. He knew what we were going to be for all time because he sees all the possible timelines that could ever be, in the past, the present, and the future. He even knows which of the timelines we're going to choose when we use our free will (and grieves when it's not one that follows him.)
They always forget Genesis 2:7 (Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. The translations all say some variety of this) which says that it's when we breathe that we become a living being.

God's word is mentioned as a " sword" but that is called " the sword of his mouth" and it's meant to " divide the thoughts and intents of the heart"❤️ it's purpose is to lead us to right thinking and right living, not to condemn others. It's also referred to as a " mirror 🪞" and the " perfect law of liberty" . It's not a weapon to use against people who are created in God's own image but to battle the forces of darkness within us.

When people of faith try to enforce what they perceive to be the rules of that faith on others, particularly on people who believe differently, they damage the message of their faith. They may cry "But you are trying to force your beliefs on us!", but as far as I know, no one is trying to make them behave in any way other than to let others follow their conscience. No one is forcing them to have abortions. No one is forcing them to become gay or trans or any of a myriad of other things. All anyone wants is to be left alone to live their lives by their own values and belief systems. If someone's faith is so fragile that they can't live and let live, then is it really faith?

The ivf law prevents every fertilized egg from growing in child that has the opportunity to laugh, to love, to play, to learn.
My belief is that God sees past, present, and all possible futures. In this way, he can see us before we are conceived. He sees all our choices. He sees the ones we make that fall short. He sees the ones that bring Him joy. Yet, He still loves us. He still makes plans for us to be able to choose to join Him in heaven.

Listening to this talk and to others that you have done, certain words come to my mind: respect (both to self and others), honesty, gentleness, compassion and consistency. I am neither a Christian nor religious, but I hope that I aspire to follow most of the moral values you espouse. The selective use of religious teachings to big up oneself and to other, not care for, those who don't share one's views seems to me hypocritical and a direct contradiction of what leading a virtuous religious life should be about. The few truly religious people I know are invariably tolerant and caring, whoever you are. Just my thoughts. Keep well, Louis

Rev Ed, I am so greatful that you spoke about using the Lord's name in vain. I have been criticized for my strong feelings about those particular curse words. I get a physical reaction of tenseness, anxiety and extreme offense when anyone uses those words. I only ask my family and friends to please not use those words. At the very least in my presence. It doesn't matter to me if someone is using it in a comedic way or in anger, I just not only feel emotional upset about it but I do have physical reactions such as nausea, my hands start to tremble and I get very anxious. My son said that I over react and they are just words. He does avoid saying it around me and for all I know, he may not use them at all anymore for years. Am I being irrational?

The message here caused a memory to appear in a dream. It was a scene from the film Chariots of Fire. Eric Liddell chose not to compete at the Paris 1924 Olympics in his best event because the race would happen on a Sunday -- which was against his religious convictions. The scene was where an American runner handed him a note -- which read: "He who honors ME; him I will also honor." (I Samuel 2:30)
A true story, and a message that Liddell treasured for the rest of his life.

With you on that one totally. I have always had a problem with the moral inconsistency of those who are anti-abortion but pro-IVF, so my first thought was at least this court is being consistent. Unfortunately they are being consistently wrong on both issues. Using their own version of religion to enforce at the point of a gun their own version of morality. I say at the point of a gun because that is what the law boils down to. A law without an enforcement mechanism is just a suggestion. Society at large and politicians specifically should always be aware of that fact when they are formulating laws and judgements on what the law means. Every law takes a piece of our freedom away and should not be entered into lightly. Church laws are for their congregation, those who chose to enter into membership willingly. They have no place in society at large unless society largely agrees and even then should be questioned for the need against less strict means. IVF inherently requires the destruction of lots of fertilized eggs. If you believe that life begins at that point, you cannot justify IVF but it is a personal decision and government should not be involved in that. Just saying, you are correct in your viewpoint and I sure wish that more folks got it.

Legislation of morality is what their goal is. My way or the highway.
I watched a TV series last year; had never heard tell of it even. I kept hearing it being described as analogous to this attempted goal: a religious takeover or a country. Curiosity finally got the best of me and... The Handmaid's Tale was pretty eye opening to say the least. They weren't wrong.
A theocracy of any kind will always be based upon someone's narrow "through a glass darkly" interpretation of (insert some religion here). If we let that happen, say, to the US, God will not acquit this nation for that... and will likely liken it to being a goat nation.

I think Luther is wise here and supportive of what Ed is saying. In his Small Catechism he wrote (in translation) "We should fear and love God that we may not curse, swear*, use witchcraft, lie or deceive by His name, but call on it in every trouble, pray, praise, and give thanks."
    * swear as in "so help me God", or "As God is my witness" etc. a more appropriate rendering of "so help me..." is as newer liturgies render it "And I ask God to help me." The original needs a comma after "so," that is "So (since I'm saying this is what I will do, bear witness to etc.) I'm asking God's help, guidance, truth...to do it."
With reference to some of the other stuff from Johnson, the Justice in Alabama etc. I would say they are walking a line dangerously close to what can be understood as "blasphemy."

How many people have believed that taking the lord's name in vain, was swearing? That's what I was taught. As I studied the word, that just didn't make sense to me. It makes a lot more sense, that it's about misrepresenting God. "God hates queers," comes to mind as a perfect example. It doesn't matter what the target is, the real misuse, is "God HATES..."
It's interesting that the Hebrews felt the name of God was so holy, that they weren't allowed to SAY it. It's why we use the name God, instead of his name. One might even argue that we're not using God's name, so whatever we say is fine. I'm not of that belief. I remember when Fonzie referred to "The Man Upstairs," and it wasn't the landlord.
Misusing God's name isn't dependent on the collection of letters and sounds you choose. It's not about swearing--though that is disrespectful. I've come to believe it takes intention, and it's substituting YOUR will for God's will. It replaces God's love with your hatred, your judgment, and your condemnation. I

I just listened to this again and realized that the verse I was talking about above IS the verse in Jeremiah. "I knew you BEFORE I formed you in your mother's womb." Jeremiah 1:5. Ed interprets this as from the moment you were conceived, which usually happens in the fallopian tube. That is not what God is saying here. He is saying before you were even conceived I knew you and sanctified you for this purpose." Sanctified, consecrated, made holy. All these come as translations of the same Hebrew word, qadash, and it simply means set it aside for this specific purpose. This happens in the planning stages, not at conception. I do still believe there is a text that says, or at least indicates, "from the foundation of the world." This text cannot be used to support life begins at conception. It is not even necessarily proof of life at all.
God is not an idiot, and he knows that conception does not necessarily mean a pregnancy will occur. Pregnancy only occurs when the zygote attaches to the uterine wall. Many never attach and are washed out in the menstrual discharge. It may not be impossible to create a statistical model for determining how many conceptions fail in this way, but you would have to be assured you are collecting and examining every bit of fluid for a single zygote that may only be around 8 cells in size. I am not going to believe any statistic, but enough study has occurred that science believes they know a higher number of males do not attach or are later spontaneously aborted (miscarried) at some stage of the pregnancy. If God knew before conception that a certain person would result, he also knew before the conception a particular zygote would end up this way and he did nothing about it.
There goes the entire legal theory, and any lawyer willing to publicly make that argument needs to have his license immediately and summarily revoked, and be sent back to a middle school health class. He is too stupid to hold any position that requires at least a minimal level of critical thinking skills. Those are usually taught in high school level math and philosophy classes. No one should be granted a bachelor degree without those high school level skills.

The only reason issues are referred to authorities is a person/group wants the government to impose their will on another person/group.
The sides believe their cause to be righteous.
The government will impose the will of the successful person/group on the losing person/group.
The person/group who believes their cause to be righteous will claim an injustice has taken place and they are unjustly being imposed on.
You have judged this judge to be unjust and guilty of violating one of the Ten Commandments.
Do you ignore his authority and engage in rebellion?

“Render unto Caesar…” means that Christians have two sets of laws to obey, one for Caesar and one for god. Caesar’s laws aren’t as strict as god’s, because his laws aren’t eternal.

One thing that bothers me about Michael Johnson is he wants to gut social programs like Medicaid and Social Security. I'm Canadian, so technically, it's no skin off my nose, but for the sake of Americans who contributed to those programs their whole lives, that strikes me as being obscene bait and switch.

There were NO petri dishes back then. That technology didn't exist. You can't force your beliefs onto others. God doesn't force us to believe or act a certain way. To be sure, there will be consequences if we don't obey Him on the last day, but He lets us choose freely whether we will serve Him or not.

God doesn't force his will on others and he is the creator of the Universe. If God doesn't force his way on others Christians have no business thinking that we have the right to force our own version of " morality" upon others.

If you take what you think is the "Lord's name" and apply it into the world, and then you find out that it causes pain and suffering, was it really the "Lord's name" in the first place? I would say in the IVF case the Judges believe they are doing the right thing. I don't think they are trying to use God for a devious purpose. Its just that their understanding of the "Lord's name" is misguided, and therefore they aren't really taking the "Lord's name" in vain because they aren't using it all, they are only trying to impose their own ignorant beliefs.

The misuse of authority that you mention is a sin against evangelism. Having the commandment forbid cursing and swearing is appropriate to a superstitious society: "How can his God be great, when he invokes His name so wrongly and is not struck down?" Misuse of the Name of God to do petty human ends, especially to condemn others, is so very much worse - because it turns all who witness it away from God. Seeing hateful work done in God's name sets the unbelievers or doubters against their Saviour, to the peril of their immortal souls.
As far as I can tell from my reading, Scripture does not inform us when a human life _in potentia_ becomes a human life _in re_. That suggests to me that it is a matter of conscience for the woman - not yet a mother, if she has in conscience decided that she bears life only _in potentia_ - and the physician who treats her. The majesty of the civil law is brought wrongfully to bear when it is used to police matters of conscience, when there are so many matters of actual harm to real, rather than potential persons.
The worst of the preachers of hate justify their wrongs by a fear that God will exact retribution against the whole community for tolerating the sins of some of its members. I reply that a God that petty is not worthy of worship.

This 'not taking the Lord's name in vain' always puzzled me. First of all, names are merely symbols. And the name of God is not the all that clear. There are many word symbols for deity. "I AM" is more of a description than a name. "God" is the more or less generic one, but there's Yahweh, Jehovah, Allah, and whole host of others. IMHO which one we use is mostly irrelevant, all prayers end up in the same celestial inbox.
Let's take a specific example of this can be found in the swear "God damn it!" On the one hand, it reminds us that there is a God (which is okay). On the other hand, as God is not in the business of "damning" anything (despite what some might lead us to believe), it's a waste of breath, it's merely a wish uttered.
As God is a person, from a strictly interpersonal relationship point of view, using his name when you're not actually talking to him, as viewed from a human perspective, is like calling someone's name so as though to get their attention, and then turning away from them as tho to ignore them... is kind of insulting. And loving God the way I do, I naturally do not want to insult him. So I use a verbal trick, and pick a different, although sort of similar word: "Dog damn it!" It still sounds like a swear, but consciously does not insult him.

not surprisingly, it is the same in Islam. the way it is put is that it is an unforgivable sin to manipulate or change the teachings of God. sadly, Muslims by enlarge are following these teachings as faithfully as most of the Christians have. the cause of coercion and forcing people to live according to our beliefs is some people's inability to teach the message of God. because they do not have deep knowledge, they cannot teach with reason as you, my dear rev. can. so, they revert to forcing people through laws. as if the laws of men are a match for the laws of God. as if God was impotent to force man to obey. they miss the plan of God because they are ignorant of God.

Despite not being raised by particulary pious people, and despite the fact that I do not belong to this faith, I silently cringe whenever someone utters something like, "Oh My G**," or "G-damn!" in reaction to some petty occurrence.
I think instinctively, it feels wrong to invoke such power for such nonsense. Perhaps it instinctively feels irreverent.
The very phrase, "I declare in the name of..." makes me squirm. It's like a dark and inverted version of Christians stating 'we ask in Jesus' name...'
