  • Could the Mercedes be a better luxury car than a Maserati costing more than 30 times as much? My W220 S Class is renown for being one of Mercedes' worst.. The Quattroporte GTS is a beautiful car but clearly flawed. What will the road test show?

Really the Maserati is a 4 door Ferrari. And if you recognise that you are buying an uncompromising sports car that has space for a couple of dogs in the back . Then it's a great car because on those special days when you can really hear it bark the absolute joy of a sports car will compensate for everything else in spades. The Mercedes will always be boring. Mercedes owners buy Teslas... well some do

Owned a Maserati quattroporte 08 GTS since 2014, it’s a beguiling car to drive, I don’t notice the bumpy ride now, but it cruises on the motorway nicely with the cruise control set to nearly 3 digits, and once you get to a country road, (the highlands of Scotland being a favourite) it is like nothing else, long open roads and great acceleration coupled with smooth quick cornering make for an ideal GT car with loads of room, apart from finicky electrics, it’s been a very good vehicle, and these early ones are more like £15k now which is a bit of a bargain for the right owner

It's really a fast GT coupe ballooned out to a 4-door, which is something the Italians have pretty much always done (I can remember the introduction of the very first Quattroporte). JayEmm has just revisited the Alfa Giulia QV and it seems to be just about the first Italian 4-door express to actually be done the other way around (Alfa, of all the makes you wouldn't expect to nail it).

I’d love to hear a mechanic’s report on the car because surely it must have some expensive repairs due imminently otherwise why the giveaway price? I would take issue with your description of £30k value on the QP. I own a 2007 QP auto and I must say I love it but it’s value will be nearer £10-12k now so the 2020 model featured will be lucky to make £15k. (I bought it 4 years old for £28k) It’s true that the Mazzer is horribly expensive on parts. New front discs and pads £1500 for example. Great fun on long or short trips though. My wife has a more modest Mercedes and everything you say about yours is also true about hers, but hers has a nicer interior. And everything you say about the Maserati sounds about right for my Alfa Giulia. It is just not Mercedes in terms of luxury car...but when you want a sports car, it is all you can ask for and more. It isn't horrible when just poking around, but it doesn't feel special until you really start to drive it. So you've got your tomato and your Ferrari. Any long term thought on either? It's NOT a Ferrari engine, simply a Ferrari based block and it's characteristics are NOTHING like they are in the original version.
It has changed from a flat plane crank to a cross plane and the heads and cams are very different.
    It's been totally re engineered.
Under those circumstances I'm not sure how you feel it's origins as a sports/super car engine have any relevance.
No one decries a Zonda engine because its based on a S class V12

      @@JayEmmOnCars yes it was.
But the cross plane version was developed by Maserati to their spec/needs and is much more a Maserati engine than a Ferrari one.
Internally its very very different to an F430 engine and its sound, delivery, power/torque curves are totally different too.
Alfa also used a variant of the Maserati cross plane version in the 8C Competizione and 8C Spyder. The engine was badged as Alfa Romeo but in this case it was really was just a tweaked Maserati engine.
      8C/MCS variants sound amazing

Love the Maser, all the pity that the follow up wasn't as good though do like the look of the smaller Ghibli. Given how good Ferrari are at sports cars, pity Maserati can't do the same with their range as alternative to the Germans.

No excuse for poor ride.. it’s not firm, it’s crap. Try an M5. That is form but works properly, on the Maser it is jiggly and just feels wrong and oversprung. But I get your point about one being a spa Orta saloon and the other not. It’s a silly test, I’m aware of that but it’s a bit of fun and interesting to see how such a cheap Merc compares to a car costing so much more.

My ex-wife knew somebody who had a Maserati. Probably the worst car I have ever been for a ride in. I'm sure it's fine on a track day on perfect tarmac, but otherwise, it is only about as comfortable as a Caterham 7, but with no grin on your face. I just didn't see the point of it. It's good looking, and it has a pedigree Italian badge, but it has the ride comfort of an Atco lawnmower with a trailing-seat. I figure it appeals to estate agents who think they've made it.

The QP may well have a split personality and unexpected strengths and weaknesses, but it's nothing like this actual comparison, for being pointless and silly.
    • The frame of reference changes by the minute. (Family car? GT? Luxury car? Value for money?)
    • The hyperbole is as highly babbled as that in any 27 video I've seen.
    • A few points of difference are highlighted, but most are briefly referred to, or ignored completely. (Surely, boot and other storage space is a relevant feature to assess the success of a luxury car - no mention. Where and how is the QP less roomy?)
    • How many km had each car done?
    • Even more significant, did they either car have new, or even decent quality tyres fitted? These heavily influence ride comfort, steering feel, cornering grip - even interior noise
(Jack never _ever_ mentions tyres, in these very random car features.)
    🤷🏼‍♂️
