  • Was the negative reaction to the facelift of the Ferrari 550 justified and is the Mercedes SL65 AMG a better choice? It's certainly much quicker!

    I may be be biased....but why does everyone seem to forget the 456GT? Definitely a Grand Tourer with the added bonus of 2 reasonably sized rear seats. Glorious V12, admittedly with 'only' 442BHP (!). I had a manual F355 Berlinetta for just over 10 years but saw a lovely blue TDF 456GTM back in April with only 21000 miles and a virtually unmarked crema interior. Never having had a 'proper' Ferrari before and not being quite as young as I was I thought 'why not?' Added bonus: I even think my wife likes it, although she hasn't actually said those exact words...You get the odd hint like 'ooh, nice colour' or 'seats are quite comfy'. She liked everything about the 355, except the ride, the colour, the noise, the getting and out, need I go on? Been up to the Peak District recently and the old girl can still pick up her skirts and get on own the road if necessary (the car, not the wife...). Obviously a totally different animal to the 355 , but sometimes 'plus la change' as they say somewhere...Keep up the good work Number 27 (ever been a Bond villain?). I salute your seemingly endless patience and persistence with the InfluEnzo.

    As the old Pirelli adverts used to say:
    “Power is nothing without control”
    Driving Ferraris are about poise and balance whilst listening to a glorious soundtrack. Mercedes are about comfort and style, elegance with a bit of performance and rock solid build quality to boot. The two might be similarly priced but their characters are completely different. The Merc might win the numbers war but that doesn’t tell you the full story, it’s a very heavy car with a chassis that was developed for cruising along the boulevards of Southern Europe or California, not crossing vast swathes of a continent in a day.
    That AMG v12 was originally built for Pagani if I’m not mistaken and then retrofitted to the SL chassis. It’s power and torque are so immense that AMG had to build so many systems to keep the car in check that it ruins the driving experience. The traction control system is so obtrusive that it spoils the fun. Think of it like a gobshite DJ who insists on talking over your favourite song on the radio and you get the picture.
    The Ferrari is a more resolved coherent car, having enough power to have the experience without the need to reign it all back in. With the upgrade from the 550 they had a choice in which way to go. Can’t do the same so it’s either got to be a more comfy relaxed cruiser or a more sporty/racier version. Remember these were the halcyon days of Schumacher winning everything in sight for the scuderia, so they probably wanted to capitalise in that sentiment and improve the heritage. Correct choice IMHO as you can always change the ride to softer springs/tyres/dampers if it’s really an issue.

    The suspension problem on early 575’s was cured with the Fiorano Handling Pack. However there were a number of updates to the suspension and steering ECU’s along with the gearbox software to a degree that a later cars without FHP but with ECU upgrades behaved very similar to an early car with FHP. There is a lot of misinformation on line about this. There are also specific assembly numbers at which the updates take place. You’re driving quite a late car here a 2004 which is going to have all the early suspension problems cured, it’s why it felt so good to drive. I have driven a manual one of these, (I’m also an SL owner) and it’s a different experience altogether, it is simply a beautiful experience and feels like a different car. I adore the Maranellos, both 550 and 575. I’m actively looking for one. Currently 4 on collecting cars, one just went live, 3 pending.

    Odd title to this review! Having owned a 550 and 575, I'll take the 575 any day. In fact, after 14 years I still have the 575. Not a proper GT??? Its the embodiment of a GT. It's taken us to Monaco, Prague, Spa, and Croatia in perfect comfort, and the wife will agree....which, I'm sure you can appreciate is important! The 575 interior is a marked improvement over the 550.
    As far as handling goes, all but a handful had the Fiorano handling pack as standard, and most of the early cars have had it retro fitted, which is not difficult. I've never seen a car without it.

  • @timgosling6189
    @timgosling6189 Před 3 lety +1

    it was actually only 23 years from the end of Daytona production to when the 550 came out, but that was still a long time! You say you wonder why someone would buy a 575 compared to the SL, and answer your own question within 10 seconds of turning the key; love it!
    The 575 first came out the way it did precisely for the reasons you discuss. The American market in particular had been asking for their big Ferraris to be a bit more comfy, a bit more like the SL. The result was a boulevardier that was actually neither as soft as the Merc nor as fun as the 550, and few people were happy. Hence the backlash and the HGTC pack and then the Modificata you have there.
    If you don't mind me saying, the racing driver in me says you should jack the backrest up a bit; you'll get better control on the wheel with a bit more of a bend in the arms.

  • @AB-80X
    @AB-80X Před rokem +1

    The reason why we as Ferrari owners do not want our Ferrari V12 GT to feel like a very soft GT is simple. It's boring. We don't want a car that could be mistaken for a Mercedes. We want a Ferrari that inherently feels like a Ferrari with its motorsports pedigree. Even way back when, a 250 GTE was sporty for its time. There's a difference between just being compromised and being focused. An 812 Superfast is not very compromised, but it is somewhat focused. That is what makes it special and that's what the 575 lacked. The day when you might as well just go ahead and buy a Mercedes, that's the day Ferrari has lost the plot.
    I would also like to stress that you have to consider what was the equivalent V8 Ferrari at the time. Those cars were totally different, and thus there was a space for the sporty V12. It was still far from the V8 355, 360 and F430.
    At the end of the day you will want your Ferrari V12 to feel like a Supercar, not the SL which has a rather "beige" demographic. The SL is a nice car in the same way the Wickers wife is nice. Dependable, polite and reliable, but utterly dull and dreary to spend time with.

    I agree with you re: the 575M. My brother, who lives in the US southwest, has one and I’ve driven it a couple of times. Around town and on most inter-city interstate highways it’s not much fun, ride is way stiff and it becomes tiresome. But get it out on an open, back country road and it’s transformed to a beautiful drivers car. Problem is there aren’t that many places where you can find those roads without traffic or other (legal) limitations. Great 2 part series though. Thanks!

    Having owned a Maserati GranSport (MC Victory version) I can say that the handling/control issue was sorted by upgrading the anti-sway/roll bar. The gearbox is as you say better in the 575 (a friend's 575 SuperAmerica proved that for me). But the difference in acquisition price is eye watering. Also the clutch replacement cost is pretty hefty on the F1 gearboxes, and needs to be budgeted for, far more frequently than the air suspension issues and roof hydraulics for the SL65, or the SL55, which itself is really far more than adequate, and has better handling.

  • @jasonjcr_cars819

    Interesting perspective. Good to watch!
    I live with the 550 on roads that one could say are best suited to a pure sports car, and yet the 550 handles it amazingly well. I also have a 328 too and we both know they’re not a barn burner in terms of performance, but both cars are very well at home on our tight twisty Mtn roads. You definitely appreciate the ride position and comfort of the 550 on any longer drive vs the 328 with its typically old school Italian driving position..
    I think you can totally be happy with the 550 as both..
    I can’t imagine having a harder ride here from the 575 M however. I think that would be overkill here..
    Bottom line, I think the 550 makes a lot of sense as GT or GT Sports car of sorts. Wouldn’t change anything..
    Cheers

    There's not just looks and design (my other posting) which are drawing me towards older cars (let's say late 1950s to early 1980s). I personally would miss the clutch pedal dreadfully. Plus/minus knobs? No way! What about my double-clutch/intermediate throttle technique which I took to perfection and which I am using about half the time?! It's so much fun to apply the right amount of intermediate throttle and the lower gear engaging like butter without any synchromesh needed. And I like the purely mechanical stuff. You can feel the torque on the shift lever. And the sound of the gearbox (the sound of the rotating gears and shafts). I think you could easily guess my opinion towards electric cars. And I am not ignorant towards the needs of countering the warming up of the atmosphere. But a drive in an electric car could never be a joyride for me (A drive in that Ferrari could be but a lot less than in a Ferrari with a classic manual gear shift.) So if my historic car is phased out be law or if I should decide to not emit any more carbondioxide into the air I will simply stop driving cars and will just use bicycles or trains. A lot of people really need cars to travel from A to B (like in rural areas). I don't and I drive for pleasure and the fun of it. So I chose the car that pleases me most when making a trip.

    The 575 GTC was insane. People moaned about the revision but then they offered this super expensive handling pack (I think it was like £20k) and it was really impressive. You either had the 575 or you had the Vanquish and the Vanquish had a terrible dimwitted robot gearbox. So you bought the Ferrari. Now I think I would have a Vanquish S, but with the (also expensive) manual conversion you can get now. The body of a supermodel and 20 years later the Ian Callum styled looks are proving to age like fine wine. Whereas the 575 looks kinda....ehhhh. Alright I guess.

    The yellow bits on the 575M ruin it for me. On a mostly sedate car the yellow calipers, yellow tach, and yellow seatbelts are like zits on a pretty face. The pops and burbles from the exhaust on decel and downshifts also seem out of place for a modern GT - such nonsense is fun when your 18-22 years old, but as you mature you find such stuff irritating.

    Why did you not like the Gransport as much? The gear shift seems equally slow, and while the steering perhaps has more feedback here, is that it? Perhaps you should try driving the Gransport again, it might be that as you say, you just don't quite see the point of this type of car and at the time you had the Gransport, might have been more focussed on sports cars (911). You might find you like it more now

    If it comes to looks there's always a lot of subjectivity to it. (But not entirely. There are cars with designs which are horrendously ugly.) I guess Ferrari was always comfortably in the "pretty looking" region. No wonder, Italians have a tremendous taste and feeling for beauty. What's up to me I like the older designs much more. Jack's InfluEnzo is one of just a handful of cars with eternal beauty for me. The other Ferrari being Its direct predecessor, the Dino 246 GT/GTS, which was famously driven by Toni Curtis in "The Persuaders" alongside Sir Roger Moore's Aston Martin DBS. Aldo Brovarone did an amazing job on the drawboard.

    The 550 was a very boring looking GT car, reminiscent of something that (shudder) GM would produce in that era. It lacked distinction. The 575 facelift was definitely a step toward exaggerated Italian styling. The only thing that really takes away from its looks are the odd extraneous detail lines in the wheels, and the fact that they left the rear end still without much detail. A cleaner multispoke Hockenheim BBS or HRE 540 design makes it look proper for a product of its time period. It does look dated though. The Mercedes AMG in comparison is timeless in its execution; it could be a modern 2021 model.

    The comparison between the Ferrari 550 and a Mercedes SL65 (AMG or not) is no real one for me. The Ferrari looks way better and prettier than any Mercedes currently sold. As I mentioned in another postig I highly prefer 1960s to early 1980s cars over nowadays cars. Even with Ferrari but Ferrari is still on solid beautiful design ground. Especially compared to other cars. The comparison between nowadays Ferraris and older ones still produces relatively gentle results. With other brands the comparison between their current cars and the older ones produces catastrophic results. Take a 1975-1978 Jaguar XJ 2nd Series Coupé (XJ-C) in its eternal beauty and a current XE or XF on the other hand. Not to even mention a Jag Pace. Or the Aston Martins of the 60s and 70s (DB-4 to DB-6, DBS, V8) besides a current AM. Just horrifying. The Italians are even more ahead with their design than they were 40 years ago.
