- My work to restore the Citroen BX 16V back to health continues. It gets all new belts and the rust is now fixed.. BUT an unexpected problem comes up which causes a headache. We also see it rise on the suspension for the first time!
Please do Check out Rich’s channel, too fella and interesting work and cars:

Glad to see it up and running, and still scratching my head with that tensioner! Happy to come and help out on The Tomato, though!
Subscribed to your channel. I have loved reading your build threads on Pistonheads... 👍😎
Now subscribed. Look forward to seeing your work: love the SM...who couldn't?
This channel is proper petrol head stuff. How refreshing to see this than a car being wrapped or noisy exhaust. A channel for real world enthusiasts. Keep it up jack excellent stuff.
Thanks Neil!!
Very brave purchase, Citroens are getting a lot of love in the classic car circle right now. This is a good buy.
One wiper cars never disappoint
Headlamps,as you already know, are glass! From bitter experience,I can inform you that a relatively low speed collision with a pigeon is sufficient to destroy one,and even back in the day when parts were easily available, they weren’t cheap! (My model was the 8 valve 1.9 GTI,but the lamps are identical).Used to love being able to cruise through really deep floodwater,(slowly),with the suspension cranked up to “wheel change”setting.🤣👍 Re:the suspension. If the spheres are cast iron(as most were in those model years),I would suggest replacing them all with steel units,as the cast ones are porous, and gradually bleed pressure out of the hydraulic system. Never had any issues with pressure loss after I replaced mine. Result!
A good trick with the coolant is to pop a dishwasher tablet in the expansion tank, then run the car for about 20 minutes. That will give the water ways a good clean, it may bring up the expansion tank as well.
That... sounds like a really clever idea. I'd make sure it was then flushed out very well, but yeah, I may do that next time
Citric acid is another excellent thing to use as it dissolves calcium but is harmless to rad, pump etc. Costs pennies too!
Coke will be much better and safer and really does the trick.
@@bombakdik do not put anything with sticky suger any where near a car. Coke is only slightly acidic, the rest of what it contains would be very detrimental
@@bombakdik There’s nothing unsafe about citric acid. It’s used in home brew kits and the like. Can also descale your kettle!
Rich is the man. Good bloke. Good to hear the BX running.
Yep nice fella!!
Great to have these guys who are specialists, top bloke
Woho the pj's are back!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Sounds like the after market water pump needs a caress with the grinder. Just a few mm before fitting should do the trick. A good tip for BX owners if that is the case.
Aftermarket parts, just from good name brands we know, otherwise just use genuine parts. Don't ask how I know.
"A very interference engine"....well described that man!
Liked the content, great progress being made! I couldn't help but laugh at 6:20 after you shook Russ' greasy hands! 🤣
In my experience, it's always cheaper and more effective to replace the radiator outright, rather than trying to fix an old cooling system. That's assuming you can find one that fits of course.
Loved my BX, BUT, it was a sheep in wolf's clothing. 1.7 Diesel, no turbo, no power steering, had a nice factory spoiler fitted though! Written off 1/4 mile from my house, by a Frenchman driving on the wrong side of the road!
You’re a braver man than me taking that on as a daily.
Working for no older cars can be such a pain in the arse (I’m sulking today after my 130 fought me all the way yesterday fitting M3 LCA’s…bloody thing 😂).
Enjoying watching you bring a car with character and panache back to live ready to be used and driven as it should be.
Thank you fella!!
Your a brave man taking on one of those..... Will make the ferrari look like child's play! Lol
You definitely need a UK Weather Spec pop-up gazebo of some sort 😄
Joy to see it lifting. I am on my third Citroen, I have had one BX and my dad have had two and my sister two as well...
Please get a blow torch on the bumpers, so they go red again instead of oxidised white! My first car was a C Reg BX 1.6RS. Even back then the drivers door hinge pin was a twig, the air suspension didn't work, the synchromesh failed, but it was such a cool car. It was also beige!
A friend of mine had a CX in the 1980s a more luxurious larger predecessor more like an SM. That was super smooth and refined with a similar suspension system and surprisingly quick.
Its Douglas Reynholm ... FATHER !!!!!!
I get that a lot!
He's like a sexy Hitler.
@@jasperdemann5936 I don't get that a lot.
@@UPnDOWN damn these electric sex pants
I thought you said you were from *Iran*?
Good to see her coming on. Thank you. Be well and stay safe.
Great fan of your channel and car choices, I do however hope to see some more footage of the actual work. Can't wait for first drive! ;-) I myself had a couple BX'en, even an GTi 8V in black! Love those!
I call the suspension lifting "the camel process". Looking forward to seeing the old beast finished ☺️
Great progress Jack! Those seats look very comfy, so nice to revive an old car like this
Well done both of you....bless ya Rich! A Star indeed 😁🌈 cheers Andrew
Really enjoying your resto of the BX, Jack. Will also be following Rich's channel. Can never get enough of good quality CZcams uploads on classic cars.
Another great video Jack, keep working on the tomato, its just something different.
Almost there, can't wait to see you driving it. :)
Love the tomato I had aubergine valver back in the day
"All the rust has been fixed " . . .
If you keep your foot firmly on the brakes after you start the engine, the front will come up as normal and when you remove your foot from the brake the rear will shoot up. On the Citroen system the brakes always have priority over the suspension and steering
Love the way these rise, like a predator about to pounce
Good to see the progress, MOT getting nearer, good luck!
Thank you!!
Great to see the Tomato coming together! You’re a brave man Jack, but it’s great to see!
I never cease being amazed at how guys from the "perfide Albion" ,are trying to save what we ,frogs ,are considering like the ugliest car ever built in France...
You Brits ,are without contest ,out of this world.
Without any sarcasm,congrats!
Monseuier Sebfrench, mon amis. Familiarity breeds contempt.
I think that holds true for all nations.
Mais non!
Elle n'est pas moche, cette bagnole! Merci pour le compliment!
@@mikedavis6884 Nice reply. But seen from our perspective: yes ,elle est super-moche,héhéhé....
@@MrSebfrench76 J'aimerais bien etre super moche de la meme maniere que la Tomate!!
Well done Jack , Richard & Anton really good going in such a short space of time 🚒👍
Great work guys 👍
A 10x10 folding canopy would be helpful in terrible British weather. Nothing worse than being wet
Great progress 😎
Good going Jack! 👍🏻
That engine sounds brilliant!!!...well done
We had one sane colour. I actually like the look of these
Tom The Tomato is alive . I’ll be honest I thought he was ready for Le Scrapheap but I’m glad to see I was wrong. I do love this channel 😄🍅
Thank you chap!!!
I've been bitten before, so I always run any tensioner/idle by hand, after replacing it, before installing the belt. Great progress though. The medieval door adjustment was very interesting. :)
Problem was it was spinning fine initially..! Only on the very last bit of tensioning did it seize..
@@Number27 In this case nothing you could do, but take it apart and possibly gridding time. Cheers!
There’s something about such cars, keep up the good work 👍
A Citroën doesn't break down, she shows character!
Impressive work getting Jack Black down to help you out. Maybe should rename his band “Tenacious BX”
😄😄😄😁 I’ll tell him, it’s spot on!!
Makes a change from Matt Berry...
@@UPnDOWN 😂
Glad you figured out the tomato. As far as the squid, this car era may require a specialized Citroen tester, to tell if the airbag system is happy. That's the downside with these. Some are OBD1 and they inform you what is going on with a system via numbers of blinks of a LED, some require a specialized tester to tell you if a system works. That was strong design performance for that engine to put out that horsepower number, non force fed, for its day.
citroen used to have a door hinge tool for adjusting the hinges. it looked like a pipewrench but for door hinges and thats how they adjusted the gap
Good video, lucky that you know the experts. Good luck for the mot
How fortunate was that, being able to reverse the tensioner so it didn’t catch the water pump. I never knew…. Great repair to the “A” post , by the way jack, the door seems to sit better for it. Here’s awaiting the next instalment of the soon to be flying tomato 👍🏻.
Love the Bx. My dad had two. Last one F reg 1989. White 1.4 RE? Was a nice motor in its day
Those seats look good!!
old skool cool, love it. now can i get a BX
389 likes, not a single dislike! Well done!
Loving this series 🇳🇿
I have seen in an actual uk car plant them aligning the door by pulling and pushing on them. They chose big people for this job.
I know you’re a bit behind, which isn’t really anyones fault, but you look like you’ve transformed the car. I love it (and that’s me never owning or driving a Citroen). It’s almost begging you to get cut and polish done and the sealed… I recently applied a ceramic polish my old Golf ($28 per litre from the local parts store) and it came up a million bucks!
Bonjour du nord de la France. Bel exemplaire de BX 16V. Bon courage pour sa remise en état.
Merci!! A big wave 👋 to 🇫🇷!
Pug 1 off know their onions. I have a 205 with a Xantia XUD9T motor, the parts number search was fun 😛
Great content, even though I don't love the car, I still enjoy watching your progress with it!
That’s great thanks for sticking with me Duncan!
A friend of mine had a black BX GTI back in the day (1.9 8v??), brilliant combination of comfort, looks and performance. Brilliant car
When I was 19 I had a Peugeot 405 sri with the same engine. It was amazing to drive, the french really did have it right at this era.
Tennessee is a great place. Especially if you ride.
Great work you two a little adaptability with parts and away we go if you can’t find it for one model there’s another that will do the job 👍👨🏻🏭
I've been keeping an eye on your channel for a while, as it seems we share a sizable portion of our audience :)
But saving and fixing up a BX 16v sealed the deal: you got a new subscriber! It's an insanely cool car I've always loved, well done!
That’s great thanks!!
First! 🤩 . I’m loving your content Jack, it’s superb buddy!
Ah nice to see you jump in straight away buddy!!
@@Number27 ha ha! Cheers Jack 😁
Now for a real challenge you could convert it into a classic racing car (I think from memory the CSCC has a series for 80/90's cars)...
Love it, will be watching with interest. I have a 405 which is based on the same platform I believe. Mine has a 306 GTI engine conversion with ITBs. Matt at Pug1off has done a lot of hand holding along the way. It gets a crazy amount of attention wherever I take it, I'm sure this will be the same.
This car is a miracle...get it up and running in two weeks was very ambitious...but you are still making great progress. Listening to your little French music convinces me that this car is a lover and not a fighter. It will teach you the romance language of quirky older cars. Do you speak French? If not, you should learn so you can talk to it in its own language. Great fun video.
Love this! My father had a metallic grey BX19 GTi, and I have loved them ever since. Good work Jack!
I had a nice silver BX1.9 GTi was quick car for its size it suprized a lot of 309gtis etc..
Had it about 2 days and took a wrong turn..went to do the quick turn in the road... didnt do that again
Niiiiiice, great car.
Good to see the pyjamas made the video.
Best of luck! The Tomato is starting to grow on me.
Ha!! Wait till I make it look a bit better.. then you’ll be amazed!
@@Number27 I'll have to retract my suggestion of " bloody stool" for a name!
You need help.
I know Rick from up n down well I don't know him personally, I'm subscribed to his channel. He's certainly a Citroen specialist, he owns a few of them. I would consider a classic Citroen BX GTi, but a modern car with its safety features and solid build wins it for me.
Phd on the number plate surely it has to be Dr Tomato rather than just 'the'?!
Great to see the progress Jack, hope you get it all done soon!
Any news on Fred?, have you been giving him a run out when weather was good?
Brilliant progress Jack, and good problem solving there. Really good to see it coming together. I had a F plate Fiesta 1.4 Sport in the day, but never had an XR2. Your channel has got me me thinking……🤔
Thank Paul.. 80s cars are cool!
I had an E reg XR2 in 99 in blue.
Loved the simplicity of it.
no power steering, ~100hp pre catalytic converter in a light weight shell.
@@stuartd9741 actually, my 1.4S was E181 LRE. Probably long gone in the scrap heap by now as they were before galvanisation and mine started to rust by the bottom of the wheel arches at the back. The 1.4S was rapid enough, so I guess the XR2 was a rocket? Was it a 1.6 engine? I was in my early 20’s though so couldn’t afford the insurance of the XR2. Really loved that car though. 😌
@@paulrowley71 yes 1.6.
Yeah they were probably a bit high on insurance for young drivers in the late 90s.
Think mine was 600 a year.
Yes 1.6.
it did go but recollect you had to wind the engine up to the higher Rpms to get the most out of it.
13 inch wheels who'd of thought.
Handled so we'll being so close to the ground..
@@stuartd9741 I paid my uncle £1,750 for it in total so £600 a year would have been way over my budget. I think I paid about £350 or something like for insurance and that was 3rd party only too! My uncle was the only other owner and had no family so it was mint. Very low mileage. Yes I recall having to rev the 1.4 a bit too but it did fly when it was warm (manual choke). I was very envious of the 13 inch alloys as mine only had narrower steel wheels with snazzy trims. They got nicked once too but I replaced them with genuine ones and used ratchet ties in an attempt to stop them falling off and a weaker attempt to deter thieves. Ah, those were the days. 😌
Rich is The BXpert :p
Get the PJ’s on Guy Fawkes, they are not lucky!! 😊
Really growing on me Tomato, no pun intended, this could potentially turn into a great car
You were lucky to get away with that, the belt coult have broken and trashed the engine, I guess that's why it did not spin on the starter very well. The brakes won't free off by themselves, you will need to strip and clean them up. Very cool car though.
put a 1 kilo sodasalt into the radiator and let the car run will clean the inside really good and wont damage anything
than flush it than blow all the flush water out with a air gun and than refill it with some coolant
Someone started a rumour and it set off panic buying, that's the only reason there's any problem getting fuel, like at the start of the pandemic and everyone bought all the loo roll!
Rich, Matt Berry's less known brother.
Great progress Jack! Be great to see it back on the road, so fingers crossed for the MOT! So it seems plausible that the Flipping Bangers boys did do the belts/pump then despite it not being shown on camera?
No they didn’t but the guy who bought it did.. will do a vid on all that soon
Anyone starting partway through this video will quickly figure out who's been doing the work - one pair of hands are dirty.... And the other pair are clean! You need to develop the habit of rubbing dirty grease into your hands during filming before too many call you out as a fake!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 to be fair he’s a professional mechanic and his hands are permanently black.. also I try and wear gloves. But .. I will make sure I take note for future vids!!
Cool! I just communicated with him.
Ah. Top work but I think you should probably change the cam belt again or put the spare one back on as that one may have been damaged on the stuck tensioner.
And on the fifth day, he rose again! I'm pretty sure the original text said it was on the third day...... 😉
I always change the belt and all the components when I get a new car, it's just not worth the grief if the belt snaps or a pulley lets go etc.
Shakes the mans hand then realises his hand is covered in grease 😂😂😂😂
Best seats in the world
‘Blow it up, blow it up, blow it up’
Jack gets a rise from the Rotten Tomato 🍅
What I can't understand is having all these cars that need work, instead of diverting some of that cash towards somewhere warm and dry to work on them. Good luck with the restos.
Jack the "Rotten Tomato" would look better back where you first found it, in a paddock surrounded by weeds, helping contribute to soil enrichment by oxidising away.
It will be a good car when finished jack a good everyday classic
Indeed, CARownerVIRUS can be extremely infectious and nasty 😬
I bet the spheres are rock hard
