Why Brad Stevens Is A Coaching Genius

- The Celtics swept the Sixers in round 1, and Brad Stevens certainly played a strong role in that due to his coaching and adjustments. I breakdown the adjustments he made on offense and defense to put Kemba Walker and Jayson Tatum in the best spots to succeed, and how he attacked Joel Embiid. In the next round of the NBA playoffs, the Celtics will face the Raptors and Nick Nurse.

Raptors vs Celtics is what James Naismith envisioned when he created basketball.
Thank you for everything you do Skip
Holy shit
nah! Spurs 2014 is what JN envisioned when he created basketball
That’s so true
Ok I realize this is metaphorical but when Naismith created basketball he was very anti coach
Man Nurse VS Stevens will be a sick matchup
4-0 too easy for us
WhiteBoy123 “cELtIcS iN 4!!”
WhiteBoy123 Your comment did age well.
Raps in 7
mastyer0fReality helll no
Daniel thanks for teaching us so much about basketball. You’re the best
No problem
Check out halfcourt hoops, you might really like his channel
Are you thanking yourself? Thanks, Daniel.
future hofer ok
Fifa 101 😂
im about to point out why they're not calling the defensive 3 on embiid, then you explained why. wow.
Brad Stevens should have been coach of the year after losing Kyrie, Baynes, Mook Morris ,Al Horford, Terry Rozier and the Celtics are still at the top of the Heap
Some of those players leaving benefitted the Celtics more then hurt them
They did a sign in trade with terry for Kemba away how is that losing
They also gained Kemba Walker and they essentially gained a fully healthy Gordon Hayward. Additionally, Tatum & Brown have taken big steps this year. They are probably a more talented team overall this year than last year, and Kemba fits better than Kyrie.
Wow yeah. when you put it like that, it's pretty impressive that Brad was able to morph the team into yet another solid squad (regardless of the fair points other commenters are making)
I am so happy he signed an extension
Awesome analysis. Love the content! Stevens vs. Nurse is gonna be a Chess battle on the hardwood for sure.
Chess not checkers?
This is your best video yet. I love how you call out the amazing minds of these top coaches while subtly giving hints to individual players ability how to use these coach changes to your advantage.
i love how daniel shows that every team has pros and cons and that he shows that some teams are better than this but some some teams are better than that.
I believe it'll be more of a Nick Nurse vs Brad Stevens, more than it's Celtics Vs Raptors.
Hope it gets to 7 games.
@Kai Webster Boston in 6. Bucks in 5-6 or Boston in 5(if the Heat advance).
@Kai Webster Ibaka and Gasol will be better utilized than Embiid and Horford were against Celtics "bigs". But better to have Gasol and Ibaka beat you than Lowry, Vanvleet, and Pascal.
@@UncleJrueForTue I think the heat would be harder for the Celtics to beat the heat then the Buck
@Kai Webster This didn't age well
Kai Webster this didn’t age well did it buddy?
Coaching battle between Nurse and Stevens will be epic
Yeah and much better than the rap battle 😂
WRONG title. This should've been: Why Brett Brown was fired as Sixers coach?😅
Little bit of both will do 😂
This is great stuff Daniel. Keep the content coming, I’ll keep watching
Wow, you've opened up a whole world to me! Thanks for teaching so well ... I would never have seen these things on my own. Makes the game even more enjoyable, to see the thought and prep behind the amazing acrobatics.
Can't wait to see how these two coaches (Stevens and Nurse) play chess with each other ... and how their super-smart players execute and react in the moment!
Been watching basketball for 19 years. Never seen my sixers so embarrassed in a playoff series
only person who can save the sixers at this point is the ANSWER himself
In all my years as a Celtics fan I’ve never seen such an easy series win. Simmons not being there isn’t even an excuse. Y’all need a good coach and then you’ll be back in contention right away. That roster is good, there’s no excuse for getting swept in the first round even without Ben Simmons.
Tristan Radeka the roster is not good, look at tobia Harris and al horford making all that money can’t even put up some points
This is so insightful Daniel...we are watching
Great content! I feel like the more I watch your channel, the more I truly understand how the NBA works. Keep it up!
Best basketball content out there, bar none! Nurse vs Stevens seems to be both great at the X's and O's. Can't wait for your video on that series!
Cracking analysis as always, Coach Daniel
Another very good video. Clear, precise, efficient.
Brett Brown: Wait, you can make adjustments game to game?
LOL
Lue 2018 : I know, right ?
great work like always
Stan Van Gundy is great when he doesn't have his own team.
Holy shit, this vid is sooo loaded with info. I mean, all of them are, but this one in particular is wow. Keep up the great work, man, love from Ukraine.
As a Celtics fan
I love brad
Great explanation!
You know how many times I’ve got a 3 secs guarding the ball in 2k?
🤣🤣🤣 you know 2k is not a basketball video game 😌
Jacopo Notarberardino ?
@@jacoponotarberardino755 Hey you sometimes play Basketball in that casino, Knicks rebuild challenge simulator. It's a common mistake.
Uncle Jrue 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Well done coach, great video
Great insights
This was a really good video! Fascinating shit!
I'm so hype for the Raptors vs Celtics 🔥🔥
This is excellent. Good luck Brad!
Bruh, I thought this was basketball,
when in reality it's chess.
Dayum.
Brad is now 8-1 against Brett in the playoffs. Straight cooking that man 🔥
This channel is great and I want to request more Celtics vids please. This channel is like Jomboy Media but for basketball which I love
Thanks bro! You should do a vid comparing the Celtics defense or offense to the Raptors since they seem to be so similar and are colliding next
Great video
All this information almost feel illegal 😂🔥
You should make a video about Rick Carlisle. Mavericks coach. Number 1 offense of all time, even when Luka is off of the floor their offense is still very elite
They play no defence that's why they are n7
@@jackblack704 Its hard to play defense when you dont have any defenders, so they take offense even more seriously lmao
Me Myself And I it’s easy to have a good a offense when you have an elite playmaker and a bunch of great shooters including stretch 5s
@@Jakey44CC11 Finney-smith is their best defender. haha
People need to stop they narrative, #1 offensive rating doesn't make it the best offense ever lol look at this Era and how close teams are. You are on crack if you think the mavs offense is better then the 2017 warriors, 2014 spurs or the damn showtime Lakers.
From a former coach, you know what's up. Great job
This makes me feel happy as a celtics fan.
5:03 this is the bread and butter play of the celtics
What a time to be alive. We live in a day and age where we are not only just matching up players but coaches as well. Raps vs Celtics is gonna be a crazy good series
8:17 Daniel man you're cold for doing Brett Brown like that
Bret got out coached so hard
It's not just coaching. The 76ers execution, espcially on defense, was lacklustre.
Hector Andem definitely, I’m expecting a change this summer. Idk how, idk who, idk when. But I want them to change their roster up a bit. If they can get out of horford’s contract then it would help too.
@@gnoix1462 I suggest trading Horford for a deal just as bad but 1 year shorter(Blake Griffin kinda deal) along with a 1st round pick and sone 2nds as incentive to a rebuilding team.
@@gnoix1462 Another suggestion would be taking Julius Randle and running him as a small ball 5 when you face teams like my celtics, rockets, clippers, etc.
@@hectorandem2944 i don't know if you noticed, but Sixers always defended 1on1s and isos very well (unless it was a mismatch), its just every time a play was run its like the Sixers didn't know what to do defensively, a.k.a very bad coaching
And now C’s fans want him out 😔it’s true that his rotation is piss poor but his attention to detail and ability to adapt to opposition defences are second to none in the league
Great breakdown coach! I can't sniff Kyrie Irvings shoes in regards to his talent, but this vid helps me better understand how the offense struggled w/him.
It's kinda fortunate that Celtics avoid Bucks early on second round because when it comes Bucks-Celtics match-up... Bucks would just overpower them... And, its gonna be an exciting first-time playoff series of Raptors-Celtics...
.
I'm looking forward on whose bench will provide more and whose key players will step-up on both teams coz they're both quality defensive teams all-season long... I'm really excited on this!!!
Bucks are a tough matchup for the Celtics, Giannis is hard to guard for any team and Middleton cannot miss when he plays us. Celtics are one of the scrappiest teams though, and can grind down any team to a close series with their defense. I hope the Celtics make it to a good ECF this year.
@Kai Webster Doubt it. L.
XGlamdringX glad I’m not the only one that wonders why Middleton turns into MJ whenever he plays us
You mean it’s unfortunate that the Celtics played a 76ers team missing their best playmaker and defender in Ben Simmons
Benjamin Franklin as if the sixers would have won even with simmons. The Celtics are the better team
This second round is going to be a battle of the coaches... it’s going to be a great series Boston and Toronto
Please please please make a head-to-head coaching video of Nurse vs Stevens during their series.
you are a Geniuos..i know every setplays from you.. Greetings from Indonesia
Brad Stevens playing 5D chess.
epic how you see it all!
lol why didn't you include the play from the thumbnail? I thought that was such a simple way of taking advantage of the sixers confusion but brad recognized it immediately
Matchups and potential matches by switches is fundamental stuff, but easy to overlook or to do wrong.
I'm not even excited for the Raptors and Celtics Playoffs matchup because it's two fun teams to watch but it's gonna be a nerd off with two genius coaches! Lol can't wait
Particularly in Game 2, so many of Embiid’s drops vs PnR involved him standing straight up and making minimum effort. I feel like drop didn’t have to be as ineffective as it was.
This man's about to have a field day with the exceptional coaching of both the Celtics and the Raptors
Wtf I thought I was watching 2k because of the camera angle and resolution... nice video btw
In ONE game it took the opponent out of their rhythm. A great strategy should work longer than that, but having a one-time thing can be good. Just don't over-use the one-time thing. One of the neatest ideas I've seen is a team playing some zone, but when the shot clock is running down they switch to man coverage. It was very slick and effective.
stan on the spot
kanter would be an allstar if he plays in 80/90s
his weakness is unfortunately on pickNroll defense which is super important for modern big
while he actually had a solid post defense which is the most important defense in 80&90s
He would easily be a 20/10 guy, possibly better.
I think he'd be better but not sure about all star. Pnr or not, as the 5 he'd be the final line of defense and I think he'd still struggle protecting the rim on drives by the likes of all the good ball handlers back then
So this video has already taught me more than I ever thought I needed to know about about NBA 3 second rules, but mostly that I don't know.
So, @1:13, Embiid's considered to be defending the Celtics player in the black circle specifically why?
Because Kanter was holding the ball
1:24 how come i didn't know this.
but wait, how do they even determine who his man is, what if they have a defensive scheme like as if embiid is just guarding whoever comes in the paint
it really doesnt make much sense, im also completely confused... im really starting to believe 3 sec rule in general is very dumb...
matchups bro... If Embiid is at C and Theis is at C then automatically matchup, and if you have different players guarding different positions then the matchup is changed off that.
Valid questions. I'm assuming, as long as everyone else is clearly guarding someone else (as you can see in the clip), they will not call it.
Usually these decisions are up to the refs.
(Note that there's e.g. also a rule, that you cannot call 3 seconds on someone "leaving the zone", which is also something the refs have to decide)
MY BOYS OUT HERE KILLING THE LEAGUE

非常优秀的讲解 comment from Chinamainland
Excellent breakdown. The 76ers really didn't have a good game plan (getting exposed) to counter act this action and that is probably why the coach was fired.
sometimes he talk too much but stan van gundys commentary is usually very smart and welcomed
Any Celtics fans here remembers when Gerald Wallace was always the guy to inbound the ball after timeouts?
Sorry , i'm a too young one to remember that but i will be enjoyed if you could explain it to me because i'm curious 💪 I mean , an OG of ATO will certainly amazed me
@@noahlandkaioken1192 It was Brad's first year. His ATOs were awesome and he brought out the best of that squad.
i hope brad stevens stays the celtics coach for 30 years and retires a hall of famer. he's clearly on another level compared to the other coaches in the league. imagine if the Cs got a legit superstar big man to get easy buckets while kemba and JT rain 3s. it'd be over for the league.
The ref not gonna call that double dribble at 5:23? 😂
The picture of Van Gundy 😂
I like how you used 5:21 as an example, when the celtics' center double dribbles the ball lmao
One nitpick with this I have is that the Sixers drop coverage did free Kemba for pulls up in the midrange. But those are shots you absolutely want Boston taking if you’re the defense. In the regular season, a Kemba pull up (non 3) is good for .79 points per. That’s an awesome outcome if you’re the defense! Even letting him dribble into a 3 there is a passable decision: 1.09 points per. Not awesome, but likely better than letting him footrace Embiid to the hoop.
I mean he coached Butler with Gordon Hayward so yea he's smart!
Brad is gonna make it tough for the Raps to score, I don't think the Raps personel can really shut us down
look at the thumbnail green arrow for 10 seconds and then look at the video u will see something in the same spot
?
Celtics counter Sixers defensive scheme of top-locking with Brad Stevens making great adjustments on both the offensive (cutting, pick and rolling, running their offense above the three point line) and the defensive (mixing it up with zone).
Who else is high af and mesmerized watching this?
Haha yuuuup!😎
Who do you think is the better coach?
Like: Nick Nurse
Reply: Brad Stevens
Daniel Dilawri brad Stevens as a coach, nick nurse for developing players
Plugga nurse is a better coach overall, since both the raps and the C’s have developing players
Why Do I Exist Stevens is better at X’s and O’s then nurse but nurse is better at making players like Terence Davis and Chris Boucher better
Plugga imagine if they were coaching the same team lol
Why Do I Exist then I would take stevens
Does the No defensive 3 seconds rule apply in FIBA rules too?
Not sure.
I’ve slowed this down and I don’t see anything. Someone please tell me where the foul is. 5:25
In today’s NBA everything is a foul. When brown shot he kick his leg up to draw contact. That’s when the foul is called. Curry uses to move almost every time he shoots.
Yessir
This is much more complex than my play style in 2k
Brad stevens playing some chess out there
Man, Brad Stevens Vs Nick Nurse was like the Chess world cup finals.
Basically my defensive strategy playing 2k with the opponents center not being able to shoot the 3.
Coach can you please do one on Nick?
You forgot to mention the part that Brett Brown can never adjust to other coaches changes. That’s why the Sixers normally throw games late in the 4th & suck 2nd quarter too.
We got him for 6 more years 🍀
The media spends no time praising Boston’s excellent play, all they do is blame philly. They have issues but it isn’t just them playing bad. We are basically the Eastern Conference Clippers without the bench depth and we get no credit.
I want to see them try this on the Raptors , they will not have it this easy vs Raptors , they better bring their A+ game
horford be like, man tf have i done? should have never left....
Brad Stevens is a genius
Stevens did exactly what I do when playing against Philly in 2k Lmao
Who do you have winning between the raptors and celtics?
Or rockets v celtics?
Someone tell the 2k devs about that three second rule!
Everyone remembers the Butler v Duke title game where Gordon Hayward nearly won it with the half court shot. That was impressive coaching by Stevens, but making the national championship again the year after proved to me he’d have staying power in the NBA. With no Hayward, Stevens got the most out of their talent and had the team be greater than the sum of its parts.
This video singlehandedly got Brett brown canned
