  • In this video, I take another jab at H1000 powder and 153gr A-Tips. I loaded it exactly the same EXCEPT for the seating depth. In my previous videos on this series, I was trying to go off of how far from the lands would give me the best groups. I never did get anything that was spectacular.
    This time around, I went off of the seating depth listed in the reloading manual.
    Check out my results. Thanks for watching!

    A couple of folks mentioned losing the bipod and I tend to agree. My suspicion is that the bipod, akin to a lead sled, produces a micro jump on the rifle enough to affect accuracy. Hard to say if it’s significant or just a suspicion. I have both lead sled and bags and have switched to the bags to eliminate that issue…just in case.

      I have gotten rid of the bipod. I have a new setup that I have been practicing with and getting used to. There will be a video coming out on that soon!

    Well done. I'm just starting to load with my new PRC but have been handloading for many years now. I have always found my best accuracy (.25 to .50 MOA) at between .015 and .020 off the lands with many of my other standard cartridges (22-250, .243, .308, 6.5 CRDM, 25-06, etc.). I can also see where a long "jump" can also provide good results in cases where I have a long throated rifle (Tikka or Wby.) or in cases where I am limited to mag length. I'm going to start my PRC at .020 off and see what happens, loading check charges down low and focus on the mid-high range of the published charge weights. I plan on testing with a 130 grain Sierra Tipped Gamechanger and a 143 ELD-X. I have H1000, H4350 and IMR 4350 to work with and I'll see how it goes. If my new Tikka shoots anything like the other T3X I have, it won't take me long to get the PRC driving tacks! Cheers!

      Also, StaBALL HD is a double base powder ball powder. Hodgdon claims that it is temperature "INSENSITIVE" and I would have to agree. I developed my loads in 30 to 50 degree climates and shot the mile in 90 degrees and there was almost no change in muzzle velocities and I was very impressed!

  • @jimtaylor5640
    @jimtaylor5640 Před rokem +4

    I'm a long time reloader but new to your channel. I have had much better luck varying seating depth to improve groups than powder charges. Finding a 'sweet spot' that would give good groups has meant altering depths as little as .010" per trial load. Wider spreads have meant possibly skipping over the best depth. I was really intrigued by your listing of the bullet jump for many factory loads and the fact they were all over the map. Do the factories test for best depths on their loads? I'm skeptical of accepting their retail loadings unless they do.

    • @mattsreloadingbench
      @mattsreloadingbench  Před rokem

      To be honest, I have no idea. But, factory loads are optimized so that they can be used in most magazines and not have feeding issues even in semi automatic action rifles too. Almost every hand loader that shoots for long distance does not care if it fits in a magazine because they drop the round in to the action and rack the bolt forward. Factory rounds stay away from hot loads too due to liability.
      There are more factors involved, but I do not know what the guidelines are that they follow to keep everything "safe".
      And thanks for watching!

    • @willo7734
      @willo7734 Před rokem

      Yep, almost all factory ammo is set to a safe depth to accommodate the shortest chambers , not an optimal depth.

    • @mattsreloadingbench
      @mattsreloadingbench  Před 3 měsíci

      Yes, you are correct. Every barrel and every action can be different. I cant stress enough that everyone should do their own load development. Now, that being said, my content can give you a guideline of how to go about it and in the end, your results may be similar or they may be completely different.
      Different rifles/actions/barrels might like different powders or powder charges. I always start my development by looking at published data, then backing off of the max charge by about 2 grains of powder and I will work my way up to find which powder charge will give me the best ES and SD. Then I go from there to seating depth testing.

      This rifle is no more. I have a new 6.5 prc. There will be videos in the future. The MPR was just not comfortable for me. There were alot of issues that I could not overcome. It pounded the piss out of my brass. The bolt was so frigging hard to cam up after firing. There were EXCESSIVE pressure signs in the brass and zero consistency. The group sizes became more eratic the more I fired the rifle. I got rid of it and now I am getting very excited to showcase my new Seekins Precision Havak HIT. This thing is a tack driver like I had hoped for with the Christensen Arms. I am sad to say the the Christensen Arms was nothing more than a pig with lipstick.
