  • Peter and Roughie are joined by Tam Cowan and special guest Ian Durrant as the Rangers hero reveals a run-in with Graeme Souness over his England allegiance, he opens up on whether he's forgiven Neil Simpson over THAT knee injury and he names the Celtic legend he grew up idolising.
The Rangers icon also talks Davie Cooper, the 1987 Cup Final against Aberdeen, the Gers star who couldn't handle the Ibrox dressing room banter and the World Cup winner he is still desperate to meet.

I watched Durrant dominate the midfield at Elland Rd, he was absolutely amazing that night for Rangers in the European Cup. I’m 59 now and those days following Leeds were the best of my life. From a boy of 5 years old I’ve been going to watch Leeds, the tackle that injured Ian was horrific and deserved prison time, no place for it on a football pitch, none. An amazing player and to recover from that injury then was near on a miracle. mot⚽️

As a Celtic fan I wasn't mad for Ian, for obvious reasons, but as a box-to-box midfielder, he was as good as anyone. Also have to say, his injury gave me zero pleasure ...terrible thing to happen to any young player.

In a sad way it kind of kept him at Rangers as if he had kept on going he’d probably have been away. In saying that Rangers had enough cash to keep him back then. He’s still crippled by it and I can’t imagine Neil Simpson looks back on it with any happiness. Was a tasty game. Some hard challenges that one just went badly badly wrong

We were at our local club and Ian was at a footballer's wedding next door, and the players kept coming in to watch the Liverpool Champions League Final. Ian (and everyone else) were great, but Ian in particular was great and kept coming back for a pint and a chat at the bar. Unfortunately I asked him about the injury but he was nice about it, I kind of regretted mentioning it but it was such a big deal at the time.

First time I ever saw Ian Durrant was when his brother brought him down to the Bellahouston sports centre five a sides. This 18 year old skinny kid with a mop of curly hair wearing a scotland under 18 tracksuit. Even there you could see the class ( his brother wasn’t too shabby a player either). Coincidentally I ended up rupturing my ACL playing at the Bella and ended up in Rosshall at the same time as Ian and got operated on by Peter Scott who was first to operate on Ian after his injury. After his recovery he was still a great player.

That was a brilliant podcast with one of my heroes as a fan of the Gers. I grew up in Aberdeenshire as the only Rangers fan for miles around and my hatred for the Dons increased greatly after that tackle. I was glad Ian rebuilt his career at Rangers and Kilmarnock. When you talked of the greatest game the 4 each draw at Ibrox I had purchased 4 tickets to celebrate my late Dad's 50th Birthday as he was raised in Ibrox as a baby before moving to Eaglesham and was a life long Rangers fan. My sister did the eulogy at my Dad's funeral and referenced that game when my Dad stood up and clapped when Murdo thundered that ball into the net and broke my heart and a big guy next to him questioned!! why he was clapping and he replied it was a great goal and the guy replied aye it was and sat down. My Dad had that kind of aura about him that could diffuse any situation but he appreciated football even if it was a rival team. I met Murdo a few years back at a dinner but didn't tell him the story or the fact he had ruined Dad's 50th Birthday for me.

Simmo is a Dons legend because of what he achieved with the club, for being a 100% committed player, not because of one tackle. Those 'fans' who sing these songs weren't even around when the incident happened, and that's worrying, that it's obviously been passed down, from Father to Son.

How about this even worse assault by Johnston on McMaster…deliberately stamping on his throat. McMaster had to be revived on the pitch as he stopped breathing. Simpson as bad as that tackle was has been vilified & demonised by Rangers fans & the media when Johnston’s diabolical behaviour is largely forgotten about
