Ian Durrant talks to Scott Paterson about the horrific injury sustained against Aberdeen in 1988, which would take away three years of his career. Ian discusses the tackle itself, the aftermath and his road to recovery including his first game back at Ibrox in a reserves match against Hibernian, where the fans turned out in their numbers just to watch Durrant.

Celtic fan here. Durrant was a tremendous player. He also speaks so well any time I’ve seen or heard him talk about the game. I remember watching that tackle on tv when I was young. Horrendous. I also feel that not only was a wonderful football talent for rangers crushed in his prime… Scotland also lost an international player that was destined to become world class. Enjoyed hearing you speak Ian.

Am Celtic fan and to do that to a player was shocking Ian was brilliant player and came back but Old Firm games I dont think you'd see any player deliberately doing this to fellow great players.

I was one of the 18.000 against Hibs reserves that day, every time a opposition player went near him the place held it's breath, feel privileged to have been there.

I don’t think the barbarian (in my opinion) got sent off for the vicious assault.
I bet he meant to end his career.

Tackle...that was an assault strange as never thought of Simpson as a dirty player but the pic of him and his face when he did it is shocking. i also think it robbed Scotland of a great international IF that had been 10 years earlier his career would have been over i still remember the photo in the Rangers News when he returned for that reserve game against Hibs Durranty Rangers legend

I remember being at Elland Rd for the Battle of Britain. I was 28 years old and what a night it was. My Father took me to see my first Leeds Utd match in 1969 and the rest is history. Mr Durant ran riot in the midfield that night and I was in awe of his performance. Mainly because I’d snapped my ACL the year before and my footballing days were over. At the time it was a career ending injury, the surgery so intrusive and recovery time 12 to 18 months. I came away that night sick as a parrot but will never forget Mr Durrants performance that night. Amazing player! mot⚽️

I'm a Celtic supporter but when ye see that picture of Simpson and that tackle it's disgusting. Not even going for the ball ,just fully intending to injure him. Lucky he could walk again properly never mind play fitba.

@@cousinleigh1470 souness was an actual thug who tried to end the careers of numerous opponents, yet you laud him for that….then in same breath say Simmie should have been banned for life. Durrant is a low life scum bag and the physio giving him a piggy back off the pitch leaving his leg dangling made the injury worse, but that never gets mentioned. Just like John McMaster needed the kiss of life after drug cheat Willie Johnstone stamped on his neck, then laughed after saying he thought it was Willie Miller

He was a good player after the assault but before it ? He was going to be world class , not just saying that out of love of the guy , if i could have a magic wand I'd take durrant before assault over gazza at italia 90 .scottish football lost out aswell down to that thug Simpson. Paul mcstay at celtic was absolute class but durrant had more attacking style to his game & imo would've been world class.
