KPI are fine in private, first owner or employee owned companies. It's when a company is sold/goes public when what Richard is talking about really applies ime
It's very interesting to hear all the stories and bts from Eleague. I would like to see a show where you tell more of what happened. I remember watching both Eleague seasons and being amazed by the production and professionalism. Btw, I didn't even notice your fake accent :D
It will never stop amazing me that we went from having PPV and paid subscriptions (and we were happy to pay for them) and way to make our beloved esports sustainable in 2010 to being back to where we started in 2001...
Richard, I'm unsure if you've ever seen what the PGA app through Apple provides, but I think the direction that app has would be very interesting for eSports to go. As a quick breakdown, it essentially provides real time feeds to every channel broadcast, live feeds of every hole, following player perspectives, viewing certain groups playing, etc. I think eSports always will want that lower barrier of entry with free mainstage games, but I would love to see for the larger tournaments to go in a similar direction with a much larger and dedicated bit of background tech for the very involved fans for a price. I don't think true pay-per-view events are really going to take off, but I think something listed above with the appropriate level of polish would be really welcome in the industry, especially if it was usable for more than one event (ie; not just ESL or some other event name I can't think of to use as an example). Some games like Dota already have stuff like this baked into the client itself, so I'm doubtful something like this would take off there, but you could always adjust what exactly a package like this could provide on a game per game basis. I think there is potential for eSports to do something like this.
Great video, loved the ELEAGUE story. Can't wait for the book! And as someone who works doing content on linkedin, please, do come in and save this godforsaken platform.
Esports is plagued by zoomer culture. Which is horrible btw. Zoomer culture is all about the players, and not about the orgs. Orgs will die if players are saited. Because every player needs to be a super star and have a zillion sponsors and shit. Its not even about playing the games or being good anymore. Its about personalities. No personalities, no esports. I hate it. I miss sweety, smelly, tryhard esports where it was all about the game and fans
i remember five years ago when everyone was saying that the traditional sports model - centralised broadcast revenues, ticketing, sponsorship - was going to be funding all these orgs. not a fucking penny coming from broadcast other than the twitch/youtube rev shares, and youtube gaming are looking like geniuses for that overwatch/cod deal. maybe the last big media rights guarantee we will ever see in esports, if anyone has any sense.
47:00 really kinda baffling how FGC doesn't realize you can have the scrub tournaments and events parallel to the proper pro scene stuff, similar to say finnish Assembly, which is primarily a huge LAN-gaming event (that started as 3D demo event), but also has Esports tournaments within it. You don't have to convolute the pro tournament in your attempt to advertise a new game in the genre or bring in more casual audience. Just litter EVO with hundreds of consoles with the new exciting thing, give players gamepads and plenty of hand sanitizer, maybe hold a scrubs-only tournament with some promotional plushie or something as a prize.
I know there's probably not as much people listening there, but I really like the spotify podcast style of your stuff. Esports gospel is always fun and relaxing to listen to. kinda sounds like Dan Carlin.
What I Expected: a nuanced and elaborate discussion which both criticizes major Esports organizations and looks toward a possible future What I Got: roleplaying a "middle-class" British office worker in the living hell that is a call center
PabloGz uploaded a video of Williams Esports (of the f1 team) using multiple cars to basically cheat, and cutting the track on stream but only showing the facecam while doing it.
Think "solid drama" is overblown considering 1) How few people actually play racing sims 2) How many sims are actually out there 3) How few games actually have players outside of community run leagues and maintain a 0.00% market share of the sim racing market. RFactor 2 is pretty much a non-player who owns a license to run an event most people wouldn't know was going on unless you follow someone racing in it. Remember iRacing during the lockdown had a 2hr delay of the premier time slot because their MM server just DNF'd the whole calculation? Think it was like 4000 teams in which everyone playing was like "oh $#!T, thats like 10-15k drivers for the D24"
Damn what a noob am I for never listening esports gospel despite watching basically every video on youtube last year :D got me 17 hours of content now at least
Paused to go listen to the new Gospel n amazing "Emperor's Got No Clothes/Digital Locusts" shit with a sober Rich purely powered by piss and vinegar. KPI sounds akin to testing that engineers use to fuckin stress test parts by pushing ever increasing thresholds it meets until it breaks except its human beings + heart share and it's definition is one of the greatest examples of American corporate grifting terms I've ever heard Long live Esports Jesus, big ups Esports Gospel and may Esports' woes be many, and their days few
The FGC is a lost cause, and pro players will be playing for scraps and Nissan Cup Noodle sponsorships for decades to come. Thanks for trying, Richard.
That Gospel Episode was amazing. I really liked how you dropped the truth on how CZcams famous only represents how pandering and COPPA violating you are these days
Don't you think FGC Pros are happy about Project L because they want to get paid. But as you note the fanbase is rabid so they want Riot to enforce the banishing of scrubs so they don't have to be the bad guys?
Regarding the fgc and esports. 1. Your strawman for the average fgc player is pathetic. The fgc statrted out without orgs or seeded tourneys (not that they can't have a place in the scene). If you're good you rise to the top if you suck you drown in pools "pro" player or not. I have a sneaking suspicion you'd be the type to ask for 'simplified" inputs. Newsflash Street Fighter is not CSGO or League. Fighting games are mostly an individual endevour so teams aren't really that important aside from sponsorships, travel, etc. No one cares if pros make money. They should if they're good. People want to compete to prove their skills there are likely some who just want to meet pro players, but so what? Are pros gods that should never mix with the "unwashed" masses? 2. Esports has kind of sanitized commentary outside of locals. At the beginning of the esports era we had commentators who knew next to nothing about the game and weren't even all that entertaining. I'll take a Yipes over a Vicious anyday. 3. It brought twitter weirdos that want to cancel people for the smallest of things or outright lie (The banning of Infiltration). 4. Ultradavid is a snake and was trying to force a vague code of conduct that would have everyone walking on eggshells in order to appease aforementioned twitter weirdos. If anyone wants their asshole licked it's David and I'm not doing it. In conclusion the hype is gone and we're left with corny control freaks. We don't have an ego we just want to have fun. Also SMASH IS NOT A FIGHTING GAME.
I've heard all this dumb shit a million times from FGC fans. You're too stupid to even realise garbage like point 1 totally proves exactly what I said in the first place.
> Are pros gods that should never mix with the "unwashed" masses? That sentence literally proves everything I said. It's so embarrassing that the average scrub thinks they should be rubbing shoulders with established pros and yet here you are parroting exactly what I said and thinking you're saying the opposite because you're educationally subnormal. Classic FGC.
@@RLewisReports Pleases explain to me why pros shouldn't interact with average players. Bro if you pros so much you should go blow Daigo at Evo.lol. I'm not big enough and never will be, Joe isn't interested in competitive gaming and he's also on record as being super annoyed when people spam him to book a guest. So yeah, I'm happy being a 1k Andy.
Me: There is something strange about the new Esports Gospel Episode
Richard: I was sober and clean
Me: Oh thats it.
LOL
The KPI part is great and so true. Always have to think about the big picture and how the managers manager thinks! Happens in all warehouse jobs.
Your rant about KPIs hit way too close to home…. Quality content as always!
Good video Richard , As an American vet that’s 24 your takes have seem to me always aligned in truth whether politics or esports . You’re the man
The content that came out the last months was incredible. Thanks!
I've spent last 8 years working in a 'contact' centre, rant about KPIs reminded me how much I wish to escape. I hope to follow your example.
The most recent episode of The Esports Gospel was excellent, can't wait for more
what is it on?

The whole call center bit is too real. Algo gods bless this man
Rich, before it was you in the FGC as the harbinger of esports doom, it was me trying to report on the scene like it was any other esports title.
Great to see you're still hanging in there brother. Hope you're well.
I work in a call center. Fuck me Rich, far too accurate haha. Great video as always man

Fantastic episode! Thanks Richard
Glad to hear more context on spinny desk. Talking Counter really didn't give it enough time in the light
thanks for the upload mate
Always love the irl story from RIchard.
Always true and insightful.

You're correct about the FGC. It's a bit charming but it certainly makes the space uninvestible (but let's not kid ourselves, what esport title is?).
