Vanguard was a major contributing factor for quitting TFT, a game that has minimal utility to cheating and no major cheating issues. I have hundreds, possibly thousands, of games played but I cannot accept using the Riot Clients with Vanguard because I use my computer for work.
You can always use your phone for TFT if you want to play. Zero vanguard
I used to play hyper-roll a lot on mobile but in Diamond/Master lobbies for ranked games it became a bit much to keep up with the rolling, scouting, and buying units.
What is TFT

Really wish tft had it's own client...
Actually insane that they are making jokes about the very real concerns that people have about their spyware bullshit.

the riot dev thinks he's hilarious
Genuinely outrageous and if their target audience were adults and not children this would likely be far more scrutinised

That's a welcome blast from the past!
I hope after all these years you’ve finally passed Genie school
Vanguard came out 2 or 3 years ago and the people being skeptical of Vanguard were made fun of by Riot fanboys for being paranoids. Now they are having their PCs bricked by a anti-cheat? All I can say is I told you so.
played league for 14 years and this was the final straw richard. took your advice and switched to dota2. its been fantastically enjoyable learning a new moba. it gives me a feeling i havent felt in a long time of being a new player and getting a chance to learn something new but familiar.
I played since launch but dota 2 as well i just did that after 2 years away from dota 2 i launched LoL vanguard update, i delete it and came back to dota 2. BEST DECISION EVER
@@Zero-di9mz I’m 400 hours in already, been playing cause I knew vanguard was coming. I have friends who are dota veterans and never played league so it’s super fun for me trying to translate my knowledge. I’m having an absolute blast. I’m loving doom, centaur, troll warlord, brewmaster (very fun to practice my micro of multiple units which is just flat out NOT a thing in LoL)

Its honestly wild that Vanguard prevents your PC from booting entirely if certain requirements aren't met (Like UEFI and TPM 2.0 not being enabled). You'd think that properly written anti-cheat would just allow the PC to boot but not allow you to play anything instead of just preventing the entire pc from booting. But its made by Riot so of course its dogshit
Its not really that wild (I AM NOT MAKING EXCUSES FOR THEM, I DESPISE VANGUARD) once you understand how it works, it quite litterly boots BEFORE your operating system.
@@vyyrThat doesn't make sense. There's still no reason for Vanguard to prevent your PC from booting.
@@zettour. 1. it loads up before almost every single driver on your computer, meaning it can mess with them ( many cases of that happening) which could result in bricking your hardware (in some cases permamently, some people had their cpus and gpus fried by it)
2. If tpm or virtualisation are off, it may go into some sort of a boot spiral or just straight up error never going to system boot step.
@@vyyr I know, but that's not a "reason" for Vanguard to do something. Like, you're looking at it from a root cause analysis standpoint. We're talking about how it's wild that Vanguard would even tamper with your system in such a way.
@@vyyr As in, there's no justification for why Vanguard operates like this.
I quit when vanguard was announced
Made a few comments about how even if you trust the Spyware part there's still the hardware issues
Got told I'm insane
5 months later R/riotgames is filled with vanguard issues
Who could have seen this coming
Rito: "Vanguard isn't chinese spyware."
My pc: "Whoa, shen-zai, whoa-yo bing-chilling. Whoa han shee whem bing-chilling."
Spyware is a severe understatment of the potential danger here and focusing solely on that part has been the grift of many league content creators ever since vanguard for lol was announced. If CCP gave the orders to turn every single pc with vanguard into a botnet they could, they could go further and spread the infection through home networks into devices without vanguard as well. And that is only focusing on the "giving china unrestricted access to your hardware" problem, the other problem is vanguard becoming being installed on hundreds of millions of devices makes it an incredibly enticing target for hackers, and riot has less than stellar history with getting hacked.
Bing chilling

I've played Lol for 7 years, only saw one cheater that had unreal movement and it was in an ARAM. I don't see why we need an anti-cheat that needs to run 24/7

I played valorant for some time few years back but to my defense I was severely mentally ill at the time.
Glad you're out of the asylum brother. Pray for me. I can't break out because of the boobas. Help
Can’t have cheaters if nobody can play the game 😂
lmaoo.
At least 30% of players quitted due to Vanguard. That's how bad it is. You can check by number of games played in lolalytics by champions that have a stable number of games and extrapolating. You can really pick any champion. Also from Riot own article cheating ramp up way before the leak and the leak barely affect(if it did at all) the number of cheats and that's accord to their own data. They were already planning to run something like this and the leak(if not intentional) was just an excuse.
I dont know if its coincidence or not, but i uninstalled vanguard and all my riot games. But then the internet was noticeable slower, having issues loading pages. I went and saw that a couple of windows updates had erred since i did have it installed. Those windows updates all went through cleanly after the vanguard was gone and that fixed my internet connection.
So careful, vanguard may or may not cause corruption of your windows updates. I dont know why uninstalling it seemed to open the dam for the issues.
There's also a chance it leaves residuals that still run on your PC after the uninstall. Need to do a deep search.
Seeing Riot employees try to gaslight users on Reddit is pathetic. Intentionally using vague tech terms like "Ring -2/SMM" without elaborating to further confuse 99% of their audience that isn't technical to try to deny accountability. I'd be more willing to give them the benefit of the doubt if my friend's Fanatec racing wheel didn't get bricked by Vanguard and my own Corsair liquid cooler and its respective software didn't start malfunctioning. Granted these two situations happened a few weeks after the launch of Valorant but given it's happened in the past, I wouldn't be surprised if it's happening again.
Especially a term as technically vague as Ring-n. The rings are plenty porous up or down, after all, that's how they interact...
I don't need to be a cybersecurity expert to know that giving kernel access to a China owned company that already had few major breaches might not be a good idea
But hey some of my friends finally managed to get off the digital drug that is League because of how terrible Vanguard is so silver linings
Vanguard was the final straw for me. I finally uninstalled league after years of consistent play. I don't think I was encountering many (if any) cheaters in my league games. Sure, I played against a ton of smurfs who were simply better than me. But little to no cheaters. Something so incredibly invasive from a CHINESE company is not needed for a game like league which does NOT have the cheating problem many FPS games have.
The best part about this is the people defending china and riot like they don't have an extensive history of lying, cover-ups, spying, and doing shady shit. "b-b-b-but they SAID they wouldn't send your data to china so they would never" - I can't even imagine being this naïve.
Arch user btw. Why anyone would install software that has kernel access is insane to me. I haven't touched Vanguard since it first came out and tried it out in a VM using Hypervisor but I take it that's no longer possible? Not that I really care cause I wouldn't touch anything Riot with 15 layers of gloves on my hands.
I remember seeing this live on stream and the Dicky Lewis hedonites (including me) spamming

We all love mentally ill reddit mods.
One thing I have noticed, when it comes to the absurd claims of 1 in 5 or 1in 6 games of League having at least 1 scripter in them is a bit much now-a-days. My last game was earlier this year before they implementation of Vanguard in League, but I have not seen Scripters in games like that in league for years, the last time I saw it like that was about season 5, roughly 9 years ago, right before a massive ban wave hit.
In the last few years, prior to Vanguard that is, there has been more Botting then anything, amongst other Styles of cheating, which do not involve third party programs,( Win Trading, Intentional Throwing because you don't like something someone said, ETC.) which for the last couple of years, (2021-2023) was a massive problem.
But these are just my experiences with what has happened Prior to Vanguard being implemented.
I also want to note, the issues that have been arising with Vanguard, I did mention to them directly, I gave them all those possibilities, yet they could not be bothered to do more extensive testing. So I wasn't going to continue playing anything from them at all because of an anti-cheat raising too many red flags with me.
I stopped playing around the time Vanguard hit PBE, so the test server.
Before then I played since beta and legitimately can't remember a single game I can point at for having scripters.
The only exception was when a friend went through a phase about 5 years ago where he'd just buy new accounts to script on because they would always get banned not long after playing.
I don't get the point to Vanguard. The only place you have a real cheating epidemic is in Asia but that has more to do with being able to get a new lvl 30 account so easily by going to internet cafes. Why would people care if they get banned when they can just get another account within seconds by asking the front desk?
No kernel anticheat will beat that either because those anticheats are flawed to begin with. There are still scripters around in other games that have kernel anticheats and League of Legends will be no different.
I’ve played probably thousands of games of league over 11 years, low ranks and high ranks and I could count the number of scripters I’ve experienced on one hand. Totally a non-factor. If there were such a strong case for implementing it riot wouldn’t have to outright lie about it
@@SuperAwesomeRoboSpy If you think about it, It may be server wide, because like I said, Season 5 was the worst for Scripters, at least on NA from what I remember, but after that the Scripters dwindled off.
@@homiga1 Exactly, Asian countries seem to be at large with cheating, however, in the Case of Korea and China, I assume that is handled pretty quickly.
But again, Ill say it, It might be more server dependent too. But yeah, I can clearly remember a time in Season 5 when there were Scripters, and Ban Waves once ever 2 months since season 3, which is when I started playing, but that was years ago on the NA Server, Botting has been more of an issue then Scripting recently.
Just look at last Season, every game practically had 2 bots on average per game on 1 team and made it unplayable. But that is a different issue all together.
Uuuh, I think I'll have my games without the chinese malware side, thanks.
UM actually I’m in 3k Elo premier cs and all my games are 1v9 closet walls and low fov aim bots I need kernel ac also I am being gangstalked and my parents neglected me
I'm amazed how simple of an issue this is. I know how my motherboard is configured and it would cause exactly the same issue.

Last patch of the ranked split had -15% ranked matches than the previous (to clarify it's -15% than the patch before vanguard became mandatory)

I wanted to say "we had good run" but I'd be lying, we're talking about League here. I only enjoyed tft but even that only on occasion.
I'm just glad I thought "hmmmmmm I don't think I will. Welp that's over." after seeing install vanguard with the update. I could have had a broken laptop by the sounds of this.
The sum total of the information that many give away on their computers is absolutely staggering. Remember on your computer you have your health information, your familys information, locations, interests, jobs, hobbies, financial information, the businesses you use, sometimes your thoughts and emotions are on there. In a very real way everything that can be totaled up and listed that makes you who you are as a unique person is on that computer. So in a very real way when these companies YOU pay say they have a right to own all of that they are saying they have a right to own you. Most of the world came to the conclusion a long time ago for the good of man that one person cant own another but this is a lot closer than people want to acknowledge. I cant believe we arent standing up for this more. It should be something we never accepted and I have no Idea how we got to this point where everyone just says everyone is doing it.
Most league of legends players are aware of the facebook integrations, which are optional and used to populate your friends lists in game with people from your facebook friendslist whom also opted in.
From my understanding the numbers they used to say 1 in 5 included bots. Easy mode l co-op vs ai is all bots, there were also bots in the ARAM gamemode. I haven't played since vanguard so no clue if there are still bots. My guess is they would just bot on mac since they don't need vanguard but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Its essentially a UEFI BIOS virus that runs like Lojax. Uninstall and delete registries then update your BIOS..
Wrong about Faceit AC mate. If you click Disable on it's tray icon after you are done playing, it explicitly says that to play / activate it again you would need to restart your PC.

Richard, Faceit even says they use a kernel level driver now. Similar to riot, the client is required for communication but it is ALWAYS running. It isn't just sitting there doing nothing, it's logging data about the system, every connected device driver, etc. When the client is connected they can retrieve whatever stored information is necessary once suspicion is raised.
I obviously can't say exactly how Faceit's differs from Riot's but I have no doubt they can both do this because they have to. With the increasing use of DMA (direct memory access) devices and spoofed drivers, the only hope they'd have at detecting it is by painstakingly going through these logs. That's not always going to work if nothing is collected until the client is open.
That's an extreme cheat example but there are plenty of other reasons they'd want the ability to log information about the system at any time. I believe Faceit has similar secureboot requirements now but I couldn't say how it's enforced.

I've heard rumors about vanguard screwing up with ssd's. I thought that it was a joke, but it happened to me today, i had to format my m2 again cause it fucked up the boot of it, it wasn't iven recognizing on bios.
Very informative👍🏼
If it was just "sitting there (menacingly)", how could it verify that nothing happened between windows loading and the game starting? It MUST be monitoring everything that happens. Maybe it does not send any information out yet, but it is definately not doing nothing.
I was blue screening constantly for a week until a mysterious critical vanguard update....was getting different error codes each time. Great work riot, as usual

Damn ... I wanted to sell my LoL account just to recoup a bit (only double digit life-time spending but still) but now I'll probably have to fire up a virtual machine to log back in or something.
virtual machines are locked out unless its a mac.
if ranked play is down by 10% during one of the busiest end of split time, it's just a small indicator.
Valorant didn't have a pre-established playerbase. League on the other hand, had built up the base for over 13 years. This is waiting massive class action and exodus.
Haven't watched a single second of ESL since they were bought by you-know-who, never installed Valorant and will never reinstall League now for the occasional half-sloshed ARAMs with friends. There were so many other ways to attack this problem short of fucking over their playerbase yet again, but this is Riot Games we're talking about. Like your guest on 4H said, their logo is them punching you in the face. Why expect anything less?
I quit league after 13 years after watching your initial video on Vanguard, you would truly have to be delusional to be okay with it being on your PC.
Or maybe you just dont want to play with cheaters
@@karis2591 If we're talking league, you do not face cheaters anyway, not that it's a sane justification for installing this crap.
@@emptywhy valorant
@@karis2591 Yeah, I still think you're absolutely insane for thinking that's a reasonable trade-off, especially when you consider Vanguard doesn't rid the game of cheaters, it's your choice to make, but I think it's a moronic choice.
Vanguard literally stops my inbuilt laptop keyboard from functioning at all when launching LOL or Valorant, its still not fixed...
Not up to riot for that one though, it's most likely an old driver that has vulnerabilities, so you vanguard blocks that driver when their games are open. It'll be up to your manufacturer to update the driver (unlikely). I had the same issue with MSI afterburner back in the day, then they patched their driver to be secure. I hate vanguard but in this case, it's not really up to riot

If you want to write to an american politician, maybe include AOC as well, because she actually plays/played League.

tbh i thought it was shit from the beginning because we know about the programming history of riot games.
Opening a backdoor only to play a game seems super shitty.
They went the lazy way by going with kernel level instead of doing it the good way with statistics and logic.

to be clear, here is a workcase for me. I work for the australian government in security. I can work from home. Vanguard would compromise my system to the chinese state. This is stupid. It runs all the time, its beholdent to the ccp. I cant have it on my devices. I can play CS because it does not do this.

@RichardLewis Id like to see a vid on how many players riot has lost over vanguard in league. I played since 2009 alpha until vanguard went live, uninstalled.
i had hard drive problems for the longest time until I uninstalled valorant/vanguard completely from my pc. go figure 🤷
Vanguard literally has false positives anyway (aka: it doesn't work properly). I never cared about valorant in any serious capacity so I smurfed in iron lobbies purely for the fun of trolling valorant players. Eventually got hit with a "third-party software" HWID ban (NOT a griefing ban) despite never having used or even installed anything of the sort. Crazy how they market this intrusive kernel-level software as THE anti-cheat solution and it can't even do the job properly lol.
What a scary company. There is a reason why shouldn't trust trainers. Its the same reason why you shouldn't trust anti-cheat.
obviously this is beside the point, and its obvious that Richard is (once again) correct about the things in this video, but, riot not negotiating the ransom is the correct decision, annoying to see people fighting this part and not the rest
Here's proof Richard Lewis is spreading misinformation:
"Can I delete Tencent?" 🤣🤣
I swear we are living in a simulation.
God i wish
ok so for context, I think the "1 in 5 games there is a scripter" is actually more like "there is 1 bot for every 5 players, but most of them are in AI games leveling an account with no players involved" . As much as I enjoy LoL I have to admit that riot are prone to using statistics out of context to sell a point, in Riots eyes the mythic system was great addition to the game for "diversity" yet in reality they was using stats from aram like "kraken slayer braum" which would never be played in a normal game to back up there point
Don't get me wrong there ARE cheaters in LoL, when you played for years you recognise some behaviours that are only explainable by scripts with movement (like flashing to dodge a skill on the same 0.01 second it was used before the animation starts, or side stepping a skill shot they had no vision of the moment it was used) however I really don't see it being near 1 in 5 games ... maybe one in every 10-15 at most although it probably is a bit worse in higher elo than i have (emerald )
Valve could definitely hire a few more people tho I know its fix the problem but it definitely could help the issues
They have done, it takes time to train people
Yes every program is a potential backdoor. But should we just not use programs then? This is also why my dad have 2 pc’s, one for work and one for Home/games.

This company is getting worse by the day as is league of legends.
I thought it was requirement to have uefi and tpm enabled so you could have windows 11, or at least install it. Odd
It is.
Cheaters suck. But my computer is my property. It's enough I have a phone picking up on my conversations, it's just on principle at this point. I won't use any riot game even though I've been playing Dota since the early 2000s and LoL since the early 2010s. Valve has my business for the time being, but maybe not for long with how toxic the Dota community is. I swear getting past 11k behavior score has brought the worst cretins the game has to offer. End of rant. Fuck riot.
