I've always found the idea of an eSports league associated with cities to be farcical, especially for Overwatch. OWL Season 1 was won by the great London Spitfire, a born and bred English team owned by an American with an all Korean roster. There's no grassroots UK backbone to it. It's just a name. Blizzard actually thought they could make it look like real sports but put absolutely no effort to create a "London" or "Paris" esports scene for OW that would cultivate a community and fanbase to support their "local" (actually LA based) team.
It was always a stupid idea and anyone who genuinely thought that it would work was delusional.
eSports simply isnt big enough for that yet, especially overwatch. I dont think that the nationality of the owner and the players matter much, its not like football players exclusively play for the clubs in the cities they live in. the scale for esports just doesnt add up. if you wanna have a league system, then you have to settle for one small studio for a major region like in the LoL scene.
having teams be associated with cities/regions can work but it cant be forced. an org has to figure out themselves how to do it organically. For example in the european lol 2nd tier leagues, the french team KCorp manages to sell thousands of tickets despite not even being a LEC team. Just as a fun fact, the french LFL which is one of the tier 2 leagues in european league of legends, has had a higher peak viewership in the summer split than the LCS, same goes for the spanish LVP and other minor leagues such as brazilians CBLoL or the vietnamese VCS.
as developer you can create a system that gives orgs the opportunity to be creative, give them a lot of freedom in which they can move around but you cannot enforce it. and of course as developer giving orgs more freedom means not getting everything you might want, im sure riot doesnt necessarily like IWD and the boys calling themselves the nutsack and there obviously are certain lines that cannot be crossed but if you take away too much freedom, things end up feeling dull and lifeless.
the american LCS still has better average viewership than the other minor region leagues i mentioned but a lesser peak. that just tells us that no org really sticks out, no org is particularly loved or hated and if youre riot and create such an environment, youve done something massively wrong. people didnt stop watching lcs because they fail internationally, people stop watching lcs because its not a good product in itself anymore and that used to be different.
its no coincidence that the LCS is the one league riot has most power over. the european league has become a lot more independent when it rebranded itself from EU LCS to LEC and changed many things up and granted the league a huge boost in the quality of the product which resulted in a big boost of viewership. you go back to 2016/2017 summer splits and they had no more than 100k average viewership which is far less than todays numbers.
I like watching the overwatch league - the city-based franchises didn't really change much about my viewer experience compared to watching any other esport, though this was obviously impacted by when I started to watch (2021).
(It's a little funny that you mention the "grassroots UK backbone" in London Spitfire now that the Backbone is playing 😛)

The only multiple minute clip where someone was as prescient as Rich was about Overwatch, that I know of, is a video of Eric Clapton from the 1960s, hours after meeting Hendrix for the first time.

I honestly just came to leave a like for that awesome thumbnail, not gonna lie.
Been watching since the "%" and dankula fundraising days.
It was really interesting getting to watch you make these predictions, stand by as football teams signed million dollar contracts for slots.
You even gave measured and consistent predictions. When the public opinion swung and people were predicting that it wouldn't last another year, you said it would last 2-3.
That was about 3 years ago haha.

i was following OW during the golden days of Seagull, Taimou, the early days where everything was "organic". You had 3rd party tournaments with teams like Rogue, Luminosity, EnvyUs etc. You had star players with a huge twitch following and actual fans, you had story lines in the tournaments, we discovered players like Dafran and Sinatra, their breakout game vs Rogue. Everyone hated Kephrii for some reason, Seagull was the undisputed king of OW just due to the sheer number of people following his every game.
It was all "organic", monthyl melee by Alienware etc. OW was on a roll honestly, then Blizz came and shut it all down for 1 year while OWL wasnt even ready. Such a dumb move, they really thought they were good at doing eSports just because Starcraft took off. Starcraft took off because of Korea, Blizz did jack all for them. WoW arena? Never popular in the first place, Starcraft 2 came and Blizz thought they were Gods at eSports so they decided to run it alone, look where that ended up.
Blizz are trash at eSports, but they keep thinking they're some mythical prodigies at running that shit it's just hilarious at this point. Hearthstone was a stroke of luck, but even then it was more due to the twitch personalities like Trump, hafu, reynad etc. the "scandals", the love triangles/rectangles whatever. You had fans following the players, so they followed them when they entered tournaments as well. Blizz got lucky, and they thought that luck was their genius at work, pathetic.
Now it's all about that MTX, that sweet sweet MTX. How far they've fallen.

This is great. The OWL has always felt so fake to me - mainly the fans. Probably because, as you say, the typical audience for Overwatch does not have much overlap with other kinds of esports.
But, hey, I got some money out of it. I watched enough OWL S1 (by watch, I mean I had it open on my second monitor and barely paid attention) to qualify to take an Amazon survey about it. The survey was basically just asking different ways of "will you spend money on OWL related things?" to which my answer was hell no. Got 20 bucks Amazon credit for filling the survey out. Works for me.

After playing it near launch, i thought it was gonna fail but for a totally different reason. I thought the in game swapping of team comps wasn't gonna lend itself to deep analysis and coaching due to always being able to just x>y the enemy. Didn't knew about the impossible format as i haven't watched a single minute of owl. The game itself was kinda iffy and it should've been free to play to mimick lols success of just having an enormous playerbase.
